Chapter 57: Acting Different
Guys, I now have a second account under the username InTheClosetWithMike and have published a collection of stories on there. Go check it out if you like! :)
June 12, 1993
Well, it's me and Michael's two year anniversary in two days, but he's said nothing about it to me. It's a little strange, to be honest.
I've been sorting out his present – granted, it won't be as good as last year's present, announcing I was pregnant, but it'll make him smile, I hope.
"Michael?" I call from the living room.
I hear his footsteps approaching, and he peeps his head around the door, "You rang, sweetheart?"
"Yeah," I chuckle. "I was wondering, like... cos it's our anniversary in a couple days, are we gonna do anything special for it?"
He goes to speak, but then I interrupt him quickly.
"Like, last year, we couldn't do anything cos I was pregnant, but this year I'm free, so... maybe we could do something?"
He gives me a guilty look, before walking fully over to me and taking my hands in his.
"Listen, babe. I-I don't want you to hate me for this, but... I'm not getting you anything to signify our anniversary this year."
I lick my lips, feeling them dry up. A sense of disappointment drowns my heart – not because he isn't getting me anything – but because it almost seems as if he forgot about our anniversary.
"Um," I clear my throat, feeling it start to congest. "That's okay."
"You're not mad, right?" he asks.
"N-No! Of course not. Don't worry," I smile falsely. "But we're gonna be together on our anniversary, aren't we?"
"Of course! See, I figured that having each another would be enough, right?" he smiles.
I swallow, "Uh, yes. Of course, Michael."
"Great," he grins. "You didn't already buy me something, did you?"
I fight my eyes not to widen, as I shake my head slowly. He gives a closed-mouth smile, and ruffles my hair as if I'm some sort of dog.
"I'll go make tea then, okay?" he suggests.
I simply nod, feeling a little down, "Okay."
He leaves the room without saying another word. Normally, he would say "I love you" or kiss me before he left me anywhere, but not this time.
He's been acting different lately. Like, he almost seems to be going off me. A couple days ago, he was just fine, but now he seems to be trying to avoid me or disappoint me as much as he can.
I don't mind as much that we aren't exchanging presents for our anniversary – it's more the fact that he didn't say it sooner, before I got him something.
"Michael," I call. "I'm just going upstairs; I'll be back in a minute."
"Okay," he calls from the kitchen.
I head upstairs, to the bedroom, and once I'm there, I sit on the bed. I place my hand under my shirt, fishing for something, until I bring out the necklace Michael got me for our first anniversary.
The writing is still there, but the pendant is a little tarnished, because I've never taken this necklace off, apart from bed time and when I shower.
It's all for L.O.V.E.
That's what it says on it. The picture of me and Michael, and the little family picture are still in there. Such happy memories and happy times – and hopefully more will come soon.
I already got Michael a present, and I know he would love it if he saw it. But... seeing as we aren't giving presents, it's pretty much useless now.
I head over to my private drawer, and find the little box my present for him is kept in. I take it out, and go back to the bed. I open the box, finding the matching necklaces I got for us.
His is a men's necklace, of course, but mine is a women's. Mine says "Together" on it, and his says "Forever". When you place them side-by-side, they fit together like jigsaw pieces, and form a heart shape.
I take the necklaces out, grazing my fingers over the word "Forever". The way Michael has been recently, I'm asking myself whether that'll be true. Of course, I hope it is, but he's acting different, which is strange for him.
Yesterday, he kept Miracle to himself all day, as if it were the last day he would ever see her. I mean, I got to spend time with her too, but Michael wouldn't let us be alone.
My eyes fixated on the words "Together Forever", I sing Michael's little song to myself.
"And maybe the walls will tumble...
And the sun may refuse to shine...
But, when I say—"
I cut myself off, hoping that Michael is secretly watching, so he can say the words "I love you" in time. But no... he's not there.
"I love you," I sing, feeling disappointed. "Baby you gotta know... that's For All Time..."
I hear Miracle cry downstairs, but before I can even get up from the bed, I hear Michael tend to her. I might as well let him do it; he seems to want to spend more time with Miracle than me.
Don't get me wrong, I know she's his daughter, and that I'm being unfair when I get jealous, but... it's been almost two months since me and Michael had an intimate time together. It's like he doesn't care for it any more.
"Miracle, don't cry sweetie! Here, let's feed you honey," I hear Michael coo downstairs.
I just sit on the bed, my eyes staring at the necklaces. What should I even do with them? I don't need to give them to Michael now. Maybe Jasper and Charlie could have them, instead.
I take the necklaces back into my hand, exhaling loudly, like a sigh. I bite the inside of my cheek, before starting to place the necklaces back in their box.
"What's that you got there?"
I turn around to see Michael at the doorway, a confused look on his face.
"Nothing, nothing," I reply quickly.
I try to get the necklaces back in their box without him seeing, but he walks over to the bed and tries to force the box out my hand.
"Let me see... please?" he practically begs.
I fight him not to get it, but he fights too.
"No, please respect my privacy," I request.
"Please respect my interest," he retorts playfully.
He manages to prise the box from my hands, and opens it to reveal the necklaces.
"You got matching necklaces?" he asks, averting his eyes to me.
"Y-Yeah, but... no, it's nothing," I stutter.
I try to release the box from his grasp, but he tenses his hand up, which gives him a firm grip. I sigh in frustration, and he looks back down at the necklaces.
"Together Forever," he reads the pendants.
"Give it back," I demand.
"These weren't meant to be for our anniversary, were they?" he frowns.
"Uh, n-no, not at all, of course not," I stumble on my own words a little.
He smirks a little, and takes the "Forever" necklace out of the box. "Something tells me they were."
I sit back on the bed, accepting defeat, and then he joins me. His gaze shifts to me, and before I can say or do anything, he gives me a concerned look.
Then, he literally just dives in and kisses me. Doesn't say a word – just kisses me. He rests his hand on my cheek as he intensifies the kiss by adding more pressure with his lips, to my own.
Is this a guilt kiss? A thank-you kiss? A kiss to simply remind me he loves me? I can't tell.
But then, he pulls away, grazing his hand over my cheek. I don't say a single word, and he picks up on my quietness, planting a soft kiss on my forehead.
"You don't seem like yourself, sweetheart."
"I am," I lie.
"Have I done something to upset you?"
"No, not at all. I'm fine."
"Now, see, I'm a doctor, and you forget that. I may not be a psychologist or a psychiatrist, but I know that when a female says "I'm fine", they're quite-clearly lying."
His assumption causes me to chuckle quietly, which brings a smile to his face.
"I've not seen that smile in ages, you know. Why hasn't my Queen been showing me that smile?"
"I didn't realise I was meant to," I reply, my smile melting into a casual one, now.
"Tell me the truth," he starts. "Did you get those necklaces for our anniversary?"
I sigh, giving up. "Yes..."
He exhales through his nose, almost triumphantly. "I knew you did."
"But it's okay; I can just... I dunno, keep them a while until the time is right. It's cool."
"No," he disagrees.
"Then what?" I frown.
"I guess... it's only fair I return the favour."
"Wha—how?"
He laughs a little, before heading over to his private drawer, and taking out an envelope.
"I wanted to wait until tomorrow, but seeing as you've given me a present, I guess I'll just give you one, too."
He hands me the envelope, and I open it slowly, curious as to what's inside. I find a letter, and read it aloud.
Becky,
I know I've been acting different lately, and it's all for a good cause. Our anniversary is going to be special, I promise. We're going to spend time together as a couple, without Miracle or Jasper or Charlie or anyone else. Just you and me, sweetheart. For, on our anniversary, I'm taking you to the city, and we'll spend the day exploring, and the night watching the city life. I hope you aren't mad at me for any way I've acted lately.
Always remember... I love you.
Michael xxxxxxx
I glance up at him, exhaling with a small laugh, "You got me something after all?"
"I know. I can be a good liar when I want to be..." he smiles.
"You can," I agree with him. "Thank you."
"That's okay."
He opens his arms, inviting me in for a hug. I gladly accept the invitation, falling into his arms. He strokes my hair, and I inhale deeply, never wanting the hug to end.
Sadly, my wish isn't granted, and Michael pulls away. "And thank you for the necklace, too. It's perfect."
He takes the box, and removes my necklace from it.
"Wanna put them on?" I ask.
He nods, "Of course. Me first!"
I snicker, before turning him around, and reaching on my tiptoes to tie the necklace around his neck. Once I've done it, he takes the pendant in his hand, and admires it.
"Me now," I say.
He takes my necklace, "Turn around for me sweetheart."
I oblige, and turn around. He secures it around my neck, before untucking my hair from the back. He spins me around slowly, so we're face to face, and a seductive grin forms on his face.
"Now we match," I point out.
"That we do," he replies.
A silence takes place between us – not an awkward one, just a peaceful one. That is, until Michael decides to speak again.
"Miss Summers," he whispers seductively, locking his eyes onto mine. "Have I told you that I love you today?"
It's been forever since he's asked me that question, so much so that I can't help but beam.
"No, I don't think you have," I reply playfully.
He wraps his arms around me, forcing us to make eye contact and not to look away.
"Well... I do. I love you."
"Love you too," I reply.
"If you love me, you'll do as I say right now," he tells me.
"Uh... what?" I ask.
"Kiss me."
"I take great pleasure in saying "Yes", Mister Jackson," I reply.
He bites his lip, before tilting his head down and capturing my lips with his own in a sweet kiss. He kisses better than anyone I've ever known, there's no two ways about it.
But then, we hear Miracle cry downstairs – of course – and we pull away quickly, both of us sighing, half annoyed, half humoured.
"I guess our daughter wants us," Michael chuckles.
"Our daughter," I repeat, a little overwhelmed.
He takes my hand, and we walk downstairs to Miracle. Michael lifts her out of her cot, and cradles her gently.
"You wanna go to mommy?" he asks her.
He passes her to me, careful not to drop her, and I rock her in my arms gently.
"My little precious is growing up so fast," I say. "Already three months old."
"She is growing up fast," he agrees.
We all sit on the sofa, spending the rest of the night as a family.
I couldn't think of a decent ending. Sorry. Hope you liked this chapter anyway. :)
