Chapter 31: Please, Not Violet
Lizzy ran over and held out her hand. "I did my job."
Cath pulled five dollars out of her pocket and handed it to her daughter. "Thank you."
"I have money!" Lizzy grinned, running to her room.
Charlotte chuckled. "She's adorable."
"She is, isn't she?" Catherine smiled.
"So...what do you think Matt will say?"
"I don't know."
"I mean, four kids is a lot," Charlotte shrugged.
"Why would he care?" Catherine scoffed. "I do most of the work, anyway. I got zero sleep when the twins were born. That's the problem with two. One starts crying and then other follows suit."
"Lizzy was quieter, though?"
Cath nodded. "Much."
"Well," Charlotte frowned in thought, "then you have hope of this one being quiet too."
"Hopefully," Catherine sighed.
"So, if it's a girl, you could name her Evangeline," Charlotte said thoughtfully.
"Oh! And Erik for a boy!"
"Yes!"
"Okay. We have that figured out," Catherine nodded. "Coffee time?"
"Coffee time."
—————
"And don't get me started on Charlotte," Matt sighed, putting a hand to his head.
"She's a sweet girl," Josh laughed.
"She is. But the two of them together...it's like I don't exist anymore."
"Come on, man. Cath just got her sister back after thinking she was dead for sixteen years. She went through a lot of heartbreak. Just let her be happy."
Matt frowned and grabbed a Coke from the fridge. "You thinking about JJ again?"
"No. I was actually talking about Cath, though I do miss JJ."
"Hows Vi doing?"
"She's good," Josh nodded. "She's got a boyfriend."
"Who?!" Matt exclaimed. "Little Violet?"
"She's sixteen now," Josh chuckled. "Not so little anymore."
"Still too young to be liking people," Matt laughed.
"Mel and I were sixteen," Josh shrugged.
"That's crazy," Matt frowned, taking another sip.
Josh chuckled. "So...when are you going to face the music?"
"When Cath comes in here and drags me out."
"You'll be kicked out before that."
"I suppose...How's Amy?"
"Great. She really loves her brother."
"I hope Cath's having a boy."
"Aren't you supposed to not care?" Josh chuckled.
Matt gave a teasing smile. "If it's a girl, there's a chance of your William chasing after her."
"You wish," Josh scoffed.
"He looks just like you, ya know," Matt laughed. "Funny in the nose, bit too close in the eyes-"
"Shut up," Josh said, tossing him an apple.
—————
"I hope it's a girl."
"Aren't you supposed to not care?" Charlotte chuckled.
"I'm happy with whatever...but a girl would be nice," Catherine shrugged.
"I'll run off, if it's a girl," Logan signed to Amy.
"You won't run off," Catherine smirked. "I can still understand you."
Logan began to stutter something out, but stopped.
"Come on, Logan," Amy sighed. "Let's go to my house."
"That's not happening," Catherine said firmly. "You aren't going out by yourselves. Besides, dinner's almost ready."
"He's not a baby anymore," Amy said simply. "It's just down the street. I walked here from school about two hours ago."
"It's a ten minute walk. You're not going."
Amy took Logan's hand and led him out of the kitchen. "What's our plan?"
"F-for w-w-what?"
"For getting out of here," Amy laughed.
"My m-mom said n-n-no," Logan said firmly.
"Logan, how old are you? Two?"
"Five," he shrugged. "And I'm n-n-not l-leaving."
"There are kids who are working for their families at four, walking twenty miles to the nearest doctor's office. You can walk around the corner."
"If y-you want to, g-go ahead. I'm n-n-not going."
"Come on, Logan," Amy whined. "I don't want to go home by myself."
"You c-can stay here or g-g-g-go alone," Logan frowned. "Th-that's your ch-choice."
Amy shoved him angrily. "Lot of good you are."
"If you disappeared, wouldn't your mommy be scared?" Logan asked frustratedly in perfect English. "Yes, she would. I'm not gonna do that. My mommy can't worry. It's bad."
"I'm not going to disappear, so don't worry," Amy said in agony. "I'm just going to do the same as I've done all week."
"I'm j-just trying t-to make a p-p-point," Logan sighed. "I th-thought we were f-friends, Amy."
"Of course we are," Amy sighed, peeking round the corner. "But I have to live a little Logan, or I'll go mad."
"I c-can't scare M-Mommy like that," Logan frowned, "b-but we could f-f-figured something out."
Amy gave a sly smirk. "Later, Collins." She seized her opportunity and bolted out the front door.
Logan gave a shrug and returned to the kitchen. "W-when does Daddy get b-b-back?"
"I don't know," Catherine shrugged. "Call him."
Logan picked up his mother's phone and dialed Matt's number.
"Heyo," Matt answered.
"Mommy w-wants you home," Logan sighed.
"Is she making you do stuff on your own again?" Matt frowned.
"N-no," Logan frowned. "Come home."
"Listen, bud...why don't you have Mom drop you at the school, and you can wait with Amy for Josh to pick you up?"
"Mommy says c-come home," Logan repeated. "She threatened t-t-to cry."
"Alright, sport, alright," Matt mumbled.
"See you soon," Logan grinned.
—————
Amy kicked the pebbles along the sidewalk.
"You shouldn't be walking alone, Amelia Taylor," a young boy called, jogging up to her. "Not in this part of town."
"Get lost, Ethan."
"Amy, I mean it! Does your father know you're here?"
"No," Amy shrugged.
"Home's the other way, Amy."
"I'm going to the park."
"Not on my watch." The older boy picked her up with ease and began to carry her home.
"Put me down!" Amy shrieked, kicking as hard as she could.
"I'm deaf in that ear," Ethan smirked. "Screaming will get you no where."
"Just because you taught me how to sign you, think you know me, but guess what, Ethan Tyler? You don't! So let me go!"
"Nope," Ethan grinned, popping the p. "Violet," he called with a laugh, "look what I caught."
"Ah, the rug rat," Violet smirked.
Amy's eyes widened. "Not Violet. Please, not Violet."
"Come here," Violet smiled. "Bet Uncle Josh never knew he was getting a mini me as a daughter."
"Go away," Amy sighed.
Violet sent Ethan an exasperated glance. "What's wrong? You lying about school again? The last time you ran off like this was weeks ago. I thought this was over."
"I'm not lying about school. I wanted to go to the park. I finished school hours ago. I just left my friend," Amy shrugged.
"Come on, Ethan. Let's take her home," Violet sighed.
"Alright."
—————
"Well, that explains a lot," Charlotte chuckled.
"He got so mad," Catherine laughed.
"I'm home," Matt said from the foyer.
"I'll alert the media," Charlotte chuckled, coming out of the kitchen to grab her phone. "Hi, Matt. Cath's in the kitchen."
"Not anymore," Catherine chuckled, following her sister. "Hi, Babe."
"Hello," Matt smiled, kissing her cheek. "I love you. Congratulations."
"Thanks," Catherine chuckled. "And I love you too. You're the best husband ever."
"I think Josh has that title."
"No way," Catherine scoffed. "You're ten times better. And hotter too."
"Lies. He's aging better," Matt chuckled.
"That is so not true. You look just as young as the day I met you."
"Lies," Matt laughed, wrapping his arms around her waist.
"I love you," Catherine chuckled, kissing his cheek.
—————
"Put me down!" Amy screamed.
Ethan knocked on the apartment door, ignoring the girl.
"Amy?" Josh frowned, opening the door.
"We caught her on her way to the park," Violet sighed. "Alone."
"What?" Josh said, the friendliness disappearing from his voice. "Amy, is that true?"
"Yeah," Amy grumbled.
"We don't speak a word of this to your mother," Josh said, low and firm. You understand?" His eyes turned to Violet. "Thank you."
"No problem," Violet chuckled.
"Sorry, Daddy," Amy mumbled once the door was shut.
"Amy," Josh said, kneeling to her level and putting a hand on her shoulder, "I can't lose you again."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"I know you think your all grown up, and I'm proud of that, but Honey, you're still little."
"Okay," Amy frowned.
"Logan wouldn't come, huh?" Josh chuckled.
"Aunt Cath told him no. He didn't want to go against her."
"Good kid. Always liked him."
Amy shrugged. "I guess."
"How was everyone?
"Aunt Cath is going to have another baby. Logan wants a brother. All is normal."
