Chapter 14
Sitara's POV
"Tara, relax. You're not giving some deadly tests we gave in schools," Myra said, judging the delicious food Kavita, our maid cooked for tonight. "It's just a dinner."
"Firstly, why the hell you didn't tell me you're planning a dinner night with Kabir and Kartik?" I asked nervously as I kept checking myself and the house numerous times.
"Oh, come on, Tara," Myra mumbled, tasting the starters. "Kartik and I are getting well together. We even discuss and chat about our favorites and now that Kabir has already asked you out once, I don't see any reason why you're mad."
I smiled as she mentioned Kabir asking me out. We had a good time that day. After that, it's been a week I guess, we haven't met. Just some casual chatting that's it. Nothing much happened after that.
And today this girl called them over for a dinner. Who won't be nervous?
*Ding Dong*
"Go and invite your dear date." Myra teased, pushing me towards the door.
I shoot her my best death glare yet Myra being Myra rolled her eyes and stood behind me while I go for the doorknob.
You can do this Tara! It's just Kabir.
I calmed my heart down a little but as soon as I opened the door, it raced even more seeing Kabir in a black shirt. First few buttons open for his chest to have a glimpse at. His jeans were tightly fitted.
As I recovered from his breathtaking appearance, I met his dark brown eyes, smiling at me. Lips carrying a soft smile.
Why is he looking this handsome today? Maybe he does look every day, it's me noticing for the first time.
Kartik cleared his throat, making me realize how everyone is staring at me staring at Kabir. Shit!
As the atmosphere got a little light, Myra and Kartik happily embraced each other like it's so obvious. While Kabir and I stayed the same.
"I'm glad that you're here. Please come." I moved aside for them to enter.
"Of course we will," Kartik said, coming near me. "But only if you will stop being so formal."
I understood what he said, still I waited for him to complete.
"I know we're working together and all but it's not like you have a dinner at your home with all the professionals you work with, right Kabir?"
We both looked at Kabir nodding, still acting like a stranger.
"Yeah, we don't even go on a date with a professional." Myra mocked standing behind me. It was a good thing that only I heard it. Myra's gonna die after this!
I know that I wasn't sitting next to an alien but nervousness is still there when you are having your dinner next to the man who is affecting you so much nowadays. In my case, Kabir.
Myra and Kartik are having a really good time talking about stuff in which I and Kabir have no interest.
In the dining room, only their chattering voice is roaming whereas Kabir and I are enjoying our delicious food. Not really though, only Kabir is enjoying the dinner and listening to their talk. I, on the other hand, am having a really hard time handling my instincts to talk to Kabir. To have a conversation with him like that day we had on our surprise date.
"I know, right?" Myra's sudden high pitch sound startled me. "It's my all-time favorite movie."
To cover up my silence for so long, I barged in the conversation. "Which movie?" I asked casually. Also, Myra's 'all-time favorite' movie changes every day, literally, so I was just curious what it would be for today.
Myra turned her attention from Kartik to me, grinning like a child. "Titanic! Isn't it just the greatest movie of all time?"
I was about to react when Kabir spoke. "I don't think so."
His simple line made all our heads turn in his direction. "Why?" Myra asked innocently pouting after someone argued on her favorites.
"I don't know," Kabir said. "Maybe because I just don't believe in such tragic, true love tales."
Myra was a little confused after his answer whereas Kartik rolled his eyes, ignoring Kabir completely as if he knew what Kabir would've said.
"And you don't believe in it because...?" I asked, intently staring at Kabir.
He shifted his eyes at me and passed a beautiful smile before speaking. "Why should one trust somebody, whom they barely know, with their life?" he said.
I placed my spoon down and completely turned myself to him. "But that's the whole point of love, right? To trust someone with your everything?" I said.
Kabir was kind of silent for few seconds like he was thinking about the answer.
"But why do you need someone to trust anyway?" he said, his voice calm yet competitive. "Why do you have to be dependent on someone? What is it that your family, your friends can't give you that you have to find some other person to fill that void?"
I shook my head. I don't know why but even if I somewhat agree with him, I want him to know that he's wrong.
"It's the love," I whispered, raising my eyebrows. "The love, the care, the security, the comfort that family and friends can't give you."
Kabir laughed, staring at me in disbelief. We both know that we aren't talking about the movie anymore but still, we want to prove our point.
"Don't even get started on love." he said, surprising me. What does he mean by that?
"So you are saying you don't believe in love?" I asked. I was really surprised. The person who is known for being arrogant and rude, after fighting with me, came to me, asked me out, and apologized?
This is unbelievable even for me.
He stayed like that for a while, staring at his plate. He slowly turned his gaze on me.
Just his stare told me that he has some reason behind it. He has some reasons which he can't tell me. And now, I want to know that reason.
Myra and Kartik started laughing horrifically all of a sudden, startling me. I looked at them dumbfounded. What's so funny?
"What's wrong?" Kabir asked on my behalf.
They both shared a look and then, controlling their laughs, Myra spoke.
"You guys are arguing like a married couple."
And then they again resumed their laughter session. My mouth which was wide opened in the surprise of their laugh shuts after hearing their comment on us.
I shifted in my seat and glanced at Kabir. He shook his head, smirking. I looked away from the three of them.
"You both need to shut up right now." I said, still looking everywhere else but them, hiding a smiling forming on my lips.
"Alright, alright," Kartik said, taking a sip from the glass of water. "But let me ask you guys something."
Kabir and I looked at each other and then towards Kartik.
"Are you sure you're not married?"
The next I knew, was Kartik running for his life in the dining room and Kabir behind him, cursing.
I laughed and covered my face. These two are the definition of crazy friendship.
