Cuisine

Warning - This chapter may contain content that will make you extremely hungry. Proceed with caution and a full stomach.

Food glorious food! Your characters need to eat something at some point. You could just make them eat pizza all day, every day, but there is so much opportunity to showcase culture, so why miss it?

You could base your cuisine off real food, such as a savoury ice cream eaten as a main meal at a traditional festival, or invent completely new meals using local ingredients.

Have a good think about local produce, such as herbs, crops, mushrooms, spices, as well as ingredients collected from certain places that are used to make meals, such as parts of a flower, tree sap etc.

What is classified as 'fast food' and 'street food'? Ordinary, everyday meals? Expensive food eaten at restaurants? Food eaten only at certain times of the day/week/month/year? Traditional food for a certain celebration?

If I haven't given you enough to think about already, here are some questions.

Foods that everyone knows how to make?

Dishes that originated in your setting?

Imported/exported foodstuffs?

What are some common cooking methods?

Unique cooking utensils?

Are there any popular diets/foods not to eat?

What food can be home grown?

Sweet treats/snacks?

Are people taught how to cook?

Passed down recipes?

Do cookbooks exist?

As always, if you think I've missed something, tell me in the comments.

Next time, on Your Wonderful Guide to World Building - Professions! Start a business, work at a fast food place, or tame giraffes, everything to do with jobs is covered in the next chapter.
