Festivals

Hello! It's almost summer, and that means festival weather! Hopefully. Festivals can seem difficult to create, but the points below, taken from an online post on this topic, should give you a good start.

1. When is the holiday and what is celebrated? Is it a religious festival, or a historical event? How long does it last?

2. What food and drinks are traditional? Are they reserved for the celebration? Are foods only eaten at certain points in the festival? (Communion was given as an example.)

3. What traditions are associated with the festival? Do they differ by region, or even city, family or individual? Are there controversial traditions used by a minority that people frown upon?

4. How many people usually celebrate? A whole city, or only a few families?

5. What are some common decorations? Are there even any at all? How do they tie in with the holiday? How did it become tradition?

6. What are common activities associated with the festival? Giving gifts or speeches? How do they tie in with the holiday? Who does these activities?

The author also says at the end not to base them too heavily on existing holidays.

There aren't any underlined questions this time, as I think I've given you enough to think about. However, if you can think of any, tell me in the comments.

Next time, on Your Wonderful Guide to World Building - The Arts! Literature, arts and crafts, dances, music and more will be covered next time, possibly in two parts!
