Languages

Hello! You should be enjoying the sunshine, but thanks anyway for reading another chapter.

Today, we're going to be looking at creating languages, as well as looking briefly at accents, dialects, local words and creating names from the language.

First, building the actual language. You don't need to go as deep as Elvish does, but you might just want the language to enhance the culture. That's Ok!

To build the basics, create some sort of sound system, spelling, a few common words and grammar/spelling rules. There are lots of online resources to help you, so Google is your best friend.

Now, creating names from the language. Does your language have any words that are commonly used in names? What does those words mean in names? This will make more sense once you start creating the language.

Now, local words. You can have a universal language for your world, and each village/region might have it's own dialect and slang. That's normal. How do words for different things vary from place to place.

Finally, 6 condensed tips about accents and dialects from Now Novel. I found this resource on Pinterest, and this mostly applies to writing real accents and dialects, but it could apply to your fictional world as well.

1. Use accents and dialects for the right reasons, try not to offend anybody.

2. Make a list of regional slang terms.

3. Use non-standard dialect carefully. This is dropping g's, etc. Don't overuse that sort of thing, it could lead to ridicule.

4. Use word choice and placement to write accents differently. You can use transliteration, which is directly translating grammar rules from one language to another, even if the second language has completely different grammar rules. Look this up if you want.

5. Learn and use common language errors consistently but sparingly.

6. Create speech variation with local idioms and sayings. This breathes life into the writing.

Look up the resource for yourself, it goes into a lot more detail. Also, there's no stopping you creating two or more languages. Here are some classic underlined questions:

How many languages are there?

Does each species/region have its own language?

What are some local sayings?

Are people taught multiple languages in school? Which ones?

Are there bi/tri/multilingual people?

Do people commonly speak two or more languages?

What about the alphabet system for the language?

Are there tribal languages, or something similar?

Are there dead languages?

Have I missed anything? Please tell me if I have!
