chapter twelve; Final Fights Of Fifth Year
" Reading between the lines, I'd say she thinks your a bit conceited mate. "
FIFTH YEAR WAS wrapping up quickly. Madeline had her routine down, Mondays and Wednesdays were quidditch practice, games were on the weekends. Tuesdays and Thursdays were reserved for studying in the library, as it was far easier to focus there, and every waking moment was spent divided between Bluebelle, Kai, and Nico.
Nico. Things were different with Nico. It was as if he'd been a strongly shaped person before Madeline Potter, able to shove her into the shape of a perfect girlfriend, but when her fire sparked up it melted not only the mold but him as well. Living as a sort of deformed version of what he once was.
The boy was still easily jealous, but he'd learned to bottle it up. Madeline could spend time with her friends and there would be no fight, though Nico still insisted on walking her to classes, eating dinner with her, and being present for every single study session.
Madeline wasn't sure if she'd tricked herself into believing she was happy, or if she was genuinely happy, but either way, fifth year was ending with minimal fallout and that was all that really mattered.
"So, how do you think you did?" Bluebelle questioned as the girls took a lazy walk around the castle after their final O.W.L., the weather was nice and Madeline swore even the sight of a book would be enough to make her throw up.
"Good. . ?"
"Yeah, I think I failed too."
"I don't think I failed," Madeline scoffed at Bluebelle's half-smile. "But. . . I dunno, my head hurts and I don't want to talk about school for six more months."
"We'll be back here in three."
"No!"
"Maddie, don't mean to startle you, but I think your brother's holding Severus Snape in the air."
Madeline's eyes blew to the size of dinner plates when she turned to where Bluebelle was pointing. And it was, in fact, Severus who was in the air, his pants on show for everyone to see, and James Potter holding him there with his oak wand and a sinister smile.
The girls tried to make their way over and arrived just in time to see Lily Evans yell at James. Madeline was proud, but it was rather short-lived.
"I don't need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her!"
The crowd that was once cheering fell silent.
"Fine," Lily spoke coolly, "Then I won't bother in the future, and I'd wash my pants if I were you, Snivellus."
"Apologize to Evans!"
"I don't want you to make him apologize," Lily yelled before James could do any more damage to Severus, it was only then Madeline notice the gash on her brother's cheek. "You're as bad as he is. . ."
"What? I'd never call you a you-know-what!"
"Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to look like you've just got off your broomstick, showing off with that stupid snitch, walking down corridors and hexing anyone who annoys you just because you can— I'm surprised your broomstick can get off the ground with your fat head on it. You make me sick!"
"Evans, hey, Evans!" James tried to call the redhead back, but Lily paused for no one. "What is with her?"
"Reading between the lines, I'd say she thinks your a bit conceited mate."
"Right," James nodded angrily, "Right—"
James lifted Severus back into the air, and before he could go through with taking off the Slytherin boy's pants, Madeline grabbed the back of he and Sirius' robes while Bluebelle grabbed Remus and Peter.
"Hey—!"
"Shut it!" Madeline shouted, dragging the boys away from the crowd that was now surrounding Severus, who was only trying to pull his trousers up.
Peter looked ready to wet himself due to Bluebelle's death grip on him, and poor Remus was nearly bent in half due to the drastic height difference between him and the blonde.
The six only stopped when the girls decided they'd walked a good distance, both Ravenclaws letting the boys go with light shoves. Once catching their footing, the Marauders turned to the fuming girls.
"Looking lovely today, Mads," Sirius rubbed the back of his neck with a sheepish smile, "Blue, did you do something different with your hair?"
"No," Bluebelle deadpanned, a single lock of her blonde hair escaping the ratty bun it'd been thrown up in. "Stop trying."
"What's your problem?" Madeline finally exploded, "I mean, you're a bunch of bullies and that's not news, but this is a new level for you idiots!"
"Hey—"
"No, you were a part of this," Madeline pointed to Remus in the way an angry mother would, "Ruddy thought if anyone were to be the voice of reason, it'd be you."
"Knock it off," James straightened his posture in an attempt to tower over Madeline, "You can't ignore us for months and come yell at us like you're Mum—"
"Merlin, you're an idiot," Madeline grumbled.
She took a step towards the boy, the other three Marauders taking a step back in slight fear, but Madeline simply grabbed her brother's chin, turning his head a bit too forcefully.
"You're hurting me more than it is."
"Shut up."
Madeline pulled out her wand, briskly fixing the gash with a glare on her face. Sirius was in slight shock, he wouldn't deny that much. A part of him had expected Madeline to blatantly hex him, but she didn't.
"Stop being a major arsehole and maybe Lily won't hate you."
"He called her a—"
"I know!" Madeline shoved his shoulder, "But you're suffocating, James! And there was no reason for you to do that to Snape—"
"Now you're standing up for Snivellus—?!"
"No, I'm not standing up for anyone," Madeline settled back, "But no one else would knock any sense into you so. . ."
Madeline's hand made a loud thump as she smacked James on the top of the head, he let out a cry of protest before cupping the area he was sure would still ache the following day.
"Stop being a git."
Madeline nodded as if satisfied with herself, starting to walk away with Bluebelle before turning back. "That goes for all of you."
She gave them a glare, for good measure, before Bluebelle linked arms with her and the two made their way back inside.
"Your sister's scary," Peter squeaked in shock after the Ravenclaws were a safe distance away.
"No she's not," James grumbled, rubbing his head, "She didn't hurt me, either."
Remus couldn't help but laugh shaking his head at his friend.
"She didn't!"
"Padfoot?" Remus questioned, eyeing the boy, "You here?"
"Mhm."
Remus raised a brow, Sirius was in the same trance he was the day Madeline had reconciled with her friends. And only after he realized Sirius' gaze was still following the Potter girl did it hit Remus Lupin.
Sirius fancied his best friend's little sister.
