CHAPTER FIVE:

RESCUED FROM HYDRA

NIGHTTIME HAD FINALLY come to the soldiers throughout some of the countries as they fought for their country in hopes of winning the war. The sun had gone down and the moon was out, yet it was currently hiding behind the clouds that were blending in with the night sky, the wind blowing everywhere throughout the air.

It was loud, in Steve's opinion, from how high up the airplane currently was. He had never been on an airplane before, so he couldn't help but feel a bit nervous, though he distracted himself as he got his gear ready. The word 'STARK' could be seen printed on the side of the airplane, making it known to many people on who was flying the machine.

In the back of the plane, Y/n and Peggy could be seen sitting side by side with Steve right across from them, getting all his gear on. He had a helmet that belonged to the dancers of his shows and since he didn't have a good one of his own, he had stolen it. Howard was occasionally glancing back at them as he flew the plane, listening in on the conversation.

"The Hydra camp is in Krausberg, tucked between these two mountain ranges. It's a factory of some kind." Peggy explains, her fingers pointing at the map in her hands.

"We should be able to drop you right on the doorstep." Howard calls back to them.

"Just get me as close as you can." Steve replies, making his voice loud so he could hear before looking back at the women. "You know, you three are gonna be in a lot of trouble when you land."

Y/n raises a brow. "And you won't?"

"Where I'm going, if anybody yells at me, I can just shoot them." Steve states with a nod.

"They will undoubtedly shoot back." Y/n argues with a concerned gaze.

Steve knocks on his metal shield. "Well, let's hope it's good for something."

"Y/n?" Howard intervenes, catching their attention. "If we're not in too much of a hurry, I thought we could stop off in Lucerne for a late night fondue."

There's an awkward silence as Y/n looks away when Steve looked at her, curiosity in his gaze. It wasn't too weird when Howard Stark would use a flirty tone when he spoke, though Steve still couldn't help but wonder if something was going on between the rich man and the girl he had secretly been pining over ever since he watched her first performance.

Peggy rose a brow when she noticed the blonde's gaze lingering on her sister. Not too many people knew about it, but the younger agent and the Stark man had a little thing a while back, though because they both had different interests and wanted different things, Y/n had decided they'd be best to stay friends, which is what they are now.

"Stark is the best civilian pilot I've ever seen." Peggy speaks up, hoping to break the awkward silence. "He's mad enough to brave this airspace. We're lucky to have him."

"So, are you two... Do you..." Steve begins to question as he stares at Y/n, to which she gives him a questioning look when he trailed off. "...fondue?"

Y/n gulps nervously, holding out a small object. "This is your transponder. Activate it when you're ready and the signal will lead us straight to you."

"Are you sure this thing works?" Steve questions.

"It's been tested more than you, pal." Howard assures.

All of a sudden, the entire plane shook from an impact that came from soldiers down below that had begun shooting at them. Stumbling forward from the impact, Y/n's hand grabbed the closest thing to her, which was Steve's knee and the blonde had quickly grabbed her arm before she could fall face forward.

As the feeling of this, both of them looked up and met eyes, both their eyes wide from being shot at. The female quickly leans back, gripping the seat just when Steve reached over and grabbed his shield after making sure she was okay. The women watch as he rises up from his seat and stumbles his way to the door.

"Steve, get back here!" Y/n shouts to him.

"We're taking you all the way in!" Peggy adds.

Steve opens the door, ignoring them. "As soon as I'm clear, you turn this thing around and get the hell out of here!"

"You can't give us orders!" Y/n protests.

"The hell I can't! I'm a captain!" Steve argues.

He moves his blue eyes to look up at her, a small smile twitching on his lips as they stare at one another for a moment before he grabbed his goggles and placed them over his eyes. Next thing they knew, he was hopping out of the plane and Y/n leaned closer as she watched him fall till he was out of her sight.

* * *

A DAY HAD gone by since the three had brought Captain America to the Hydra base where his best friend and the rest of his unit had been captured by Johann Schmidt. It had been raining out not too long ago, the ground now all wet as the soldiers in this unit were walking around, training in their usual clothing they had been given.

Underneath a tent, a man could be seen typing into a typewriter as he typed out everything that Colonel Phillips had been saying for him to write. Somewhere on the base, a worried Y/n could be seen chewing on her thumb as she waited to hear back from the super soldier they had dropped off the night before, considering there had been no signal from him.

"Senator Brandt, I regret to report that Captain Steven G. Rogers went missing behind enemy lines on the third. Aerial reconnaissance has proven unfruitful. As a result, I must declare Captain Rogers killed in action. Period." Colonel Phillips reads off his paper.

Just as he was finishing up, Peggy was walking underneath the tent with some papers in her hand. She stopped a bit at the sound of his words, not ready to tell the news to her sister, who had been worrying the entire time. Hearing her footsteps, the colonel turns around and his strict face comes back.

"The last surveillance flight is back." Peggy tells him, placing the papers down. "No sign of activity."

"Go get a cup of coffee, corporal." Colonel Phillips demands to the man in the tent, to which he agrees and leaves. "I can't touch Stark. He's rich and he's the army's number one weapons contractor. You and your sister are neither one."

"With respect, sir, I don't regret my actions. And I know my sister doesn't. And I don't think Captain Rogers did, either." Peggy admits.

Colonel Phillips raises a brow. "What makes you think I give a damn about your opinions? I took a chance with you and her, Agent Carter. And now America's golden boy and a lot of other good men are dead cause your sister had a crush."

Peggy shakes her head. "It could've been, but my sister had faith. And so did I."

"Well, I hope that's a big comfort to you when they shut this division down." Colonel Phillips comments.

Meanwhile, not too far from the tent, Y/n could be seen sitting on a little seat with her guitar in her arms as she let her fingers gently strum to the strings of the instrument. She ignored everyone around her as her voice quietly mumbled the lyrics of the song she had showed to Steve just the day before.

A frown was etched on her face while she stared down at her hands. She couldn't help but wish Steve was right beside her again, listening to her quietly sing to just him. When she had first seen him, she remembered examining him, wondering if he was like every other man. But throughout training, she realized his heart was much bigger than everyone else's.

While many fall for men's looks, she fell for Steve Rogers' big heart.

The sound of lots of footsteps speeding by had the young female looking up from her hand, seeing lots of soldiers rushing by her as they yelled out to one another. She glanced over her shoulder to look and see where they were running, though she couldn't see anything. Placing her guitar down, Y/n gets up to her feet and moves in the direction.

She could see Peggy trailing behind Colonel Phillips as they followed everyone else. The soldiers were standing near the entrance of the base, all of them moving to the side as they watch a group of many soldiers walking towards them with a familiar face at the front. Stopping just beside her sister, Y/n felt her heart skip a beat at the sight of him.

A well and alive Steve Rogers kept his gaze straight forward with his shield on his back as he moved his large frame towards the base he had been training at for quite a while now before he turned into the super soldier he now as. The soldiers followed right behind him with guns in their hand and none of them said a word.

Not too far behind, some soldiers were sitting on top of a tank as some men inside drove it into the base. More vehicles were behind and as they walked by the men already at the base, they could see just how many soldiers there were. As they began walking by the other men who had moved to the side, the crowd started clapping and cheering for the super soldier at the front.

Noticing his best friend glancing at him in the corner of his eye, James Buchanan Barnes also looked over and met his childhood best friend's gaze and Steve gave him a small smile before reaching over and patting his back. He could tell that the brunette was still trying to get used to the fact that the blonde was much different than the last he had seen him.

As they got further into the camp, Steve couldn't help but glance around in search of the woman he had hoped to see near the front with everyone else. And when he saw Colonel Phillips stomping his way towards him, he came to a stop as his eyes glanced over the older man's shoulders, seeing her standing behind him.

Steve gives a salute to the colonel when he stopped in front of him. "Some of these men need medical attention. I'd like to surrender myself for disciplinary action."

"That won't be necessary." Colonel Phillips reassures.

Steve nods, happiness in his eyes. "Yes, sir."

Turning around, the colonel looks to the sisters and as he walks by Peggy, he quietly comments about the faith comment she had made before glancing at Y/n. The younger sister didn't pay them any mind as she kept her eyes on Steve, who had turned to look at her while she stepped towards him till they were right in front of one another.

"You're late." Y/n tells him with a small gulp. "And you had me worried."

Steve smiles softly, digging out his transponder to reveal it had broke. "Couldn't call my ride."

"Hey!" Bucky yells out, catching everyone's attention. "Let's hear it for Captain America!"

Almost right after, the entire crowd of soldiers and men were cheering as they all looked at the very man who had saved many of them in the crowd. Y/n didn't join in as she and Steve were too busy staring at one another with little smiles etched on their faces.
