CAROLINE LOCKABY was used to being called 'sweet' - of course the 1969 Neil Diamond song was partly to blame - but she had been called it long before that pop culture reference. And while it was only one of the words that could be used to describe her, but she was certainly that. A girl with a cheery disposition, rosy cheeks and desire to see good in everything; someone who enjoyed the simpler things in life.

She loved the way the sunlight streamed into the Hufflepuff common room, the smell of freshly ground coffee beans and the way her heart fluttered upon receiving letters from her anonymous penpal, who had dubbed himself 'Padfoot'. But nothing could beat her love for literature and the worlds that could be found within the worn pages of old books - well, maybe Padfoot could.

Perhaps that love of literature was part of the reason why she was able to secure herself her part time job at 'The Shop Around the Corner', a quaint independent coffee shop and bookstore just off the Hogsmeade high street - it was only part of the reason as the shop's owner Birdie was rather particular about the type of people her staff were.

The older woman rather took a shine to Caroline and her tendency to steal away into an armchair with a old book and a strong coffee, rather than cause havoc over in Zonko's Joke Shop - that sat next door to the shop - like the rest of the school.

SIRIUS BLACK, on the other hand, loved the more exciting parts of life. He love the kick he'd get from riding his motorcycle at full speed down an empty street in the middle of the night; of being an Animagus and evading detection. He even loved the thrill that came with his correspondence with his mystery girl within the walls of Hogwarts. But, of course, the excitement following the success of pranks he would pull with his best friend, James Potter, superseded it all - well, all but 'Mystery Girl.'

Sirius was one of many students who would have chosen a visit to Zonko's over a trip to that 'musty old café' as he so lovingly called it. In fact, one might go so far to say that he was Zonko's favourite customer. Perhaps, that was why the shop owner so gladly gave him a job there - after all, Sirius knew exactly what the customers wanted.

However, when Zonko wishes to buy out 'The Shop Around the Corner' in order to expand, Sirius finds himself at loggerheads with a certain blonde - who would sooner see her older brother, Allan, be sat on by an erumpent than her precious coffee shop fall into corporate hands and be forced to shut down.

Now, Sirius Black isn't one to back down in the face of adversity and the same can be said for Caroline Lockaby - especially when her favourite shop is involved - and very quickly an intense rivalry forms between the two.

What could complicate it further? Only the fact that their so called anonymous correspondence is with one another ... well, not that either of them know that.

thank you for taking the time to read this book, which is a prequel to my oliver wood fanfic, booksmarts and broomsticks, so you might see a few familiar faces ( but by no means do you have to read it to understand the plot of this story! ) i have honestly wanted to write a sirius fic for so long now and i rewatched you've got mail the other day and just could not resist the inspiration that came with it, anyway i hope you enjoy because i am very excited.
