CHAPTER TEN:

"TO MAKE HER FEEL IT."

Outside of the camp walls, Y/n found herself kneeling beside a grave. A grave of hers and Clarke's best friend.

Wells' grave.

They didn't know how it happened. They didn't know how he died. But they knew someone had murdered him while he was on watch during the night, as there had been a stab wound on the side of his neck.

A grounder had gotten to him.

Both Clarke and Y/n grieved for their best friend. The older Griffin sister had visited the grave earlier, which is why Y/n was by herself at Wells' grave. The sound of footsteps rings through her ears, causing her to turn around, bringing out a knife, ready to attack if it was a grounder. However, it was only Finn.

"You shouldn't be out here alone." Finn states. "What if I was a grounder? They got Wells just outside the wall."

"Says the guy who just spent another night exploring the woods all by himself." Y/n fires back.

"But I'm reckless. And irresponsible. I got you something." Finn informs.

Pursing her lips, Y/n watches as Finn holds out his hands before snapping his fingers and moving his hands, bringing out a harmonica. After seeing the girl tap against the floor, humming songs to herself, he knew she liked music.

Y/n's eyes widen as she grabs it. "Where did you get this?"

"The music store." Finn replies with a little smile.

Y/n smiles at him slightly as she stares at the harmonica in her hands. Just then, her smile slowly turns into a frown while lowering her hands, still holding the instrument.

"You know when we were kids... Wells was always giving me ukuleles, drumsticks, just anything I could play music with, really. He always gave Clarke ink and charcoal. We found out later that he was trading his own stuff to give it to us. He didn't want us to know that, either. He let us hate him so that we wouldn't hate our mother." Y/n explains, feeling tears come to her eyes.

Finn nods a little. "I know."

"My mother killed my father." Y/n tells him, twisting the harmonica in her hands. "Just wish there was something I could do. To tell her that Clarke and I know. Make her feel what I'm..."

The girl stops herself short as she blinks the tears back. Finn watches as Y/n's face becomes blank slightly while she walks past him.

"Where are you going?" Finn asks.

"To make her feel it." Y/n replies.

Finn quickly follows after her, following her into camp and into the dropship, where she goes to Monty. The Spacewalker watches as both Y/n and Monty crouched in front of each other, the boy working on getting her wristband off. Once it was fully off, he tries his best for the wristband to stay on, which it successfully does.

"Yes! I did it. It's still operational." Monty informs.

Y/n smiles at him as they both stand up from their crouched positions, the Griffin girl walking away and stopping in front of Finn, who had been staring at her with an unsure expression the whole time.

"What? Monty needed a working wristband." Y/n states.

"And you needed to punish your mother." Finn reminds.

"Look, they're running out of air, and we need their help. My mother thinking I'm dead is only temporary." Y/n argues. "Besides, Clarke still has hers on."

"Not if I can't patch it through the dropship mainframe." Monty cuts in, glancing back at them. "I can do it. We'll be talking to the Ark by nightfall."

In response, Y/n nods at him before glancing back at Finn and walking past him and out the dropship in search for her sister.

Later in the day, Y/n was able to find Clarke as both sisters now stood in Bellamy's tent with Bellamy, Octavia and Jasper. Octavia and Jasper had shown them the fingers of Wells they had found outside the wall, including the knife as well.

Clarke picks up the knife. "This knife was made of metal from the dropship."

"What do you mean?" Jasper questions.

"Who else knows about this?" Bellamy asks.

"No one. We brought it straight here." Octavia replies.

Jasper looks to the sisters, watching as they stared at the knife in Clarke's hands.

"Y/n? Clarke?" Jasper mumbles.

"It means the grounders didn't kill Wells. It was one of us." Y/n informs.

"So, there's a murderer in the camp?" Jasper questions in fear.

"There's more than one murderer in this camp. This isn't news. We need to keep it quiet." Bellamy states.

Ignoring the oldest Blake siblings words, Clarke walks past her sister, starting to walk past Bellamy, but he stops her.

"Get out of my way, Bellamy." Clarke sneers.

"Be smart about this. Look at what we've achieved-- the wall, the patrols. Like it or not, thinking the grounders killed Wells is good for us." Bellamy tries.

"Oh, good for you, you mean." Clarke corrects. "What-- keep people afraid and they'll work for you? Is that it?"

Bellamy nods. "Yeah, that's it. But it's good for all of us. Fear of the grounders is building that wall. And besides, what are you gonna do? Just walk out there and ask the killer to step forward? You don't even know whose knife that is."

"Oh, really?" Clarke begins, holding up the knife, revealing initials. "J.M. John Murphy. The people have a right to know."

With that, she stomps out, Y/n immediately following after her, the others trailing behind the sisters. As they got closer and closer to everyone else, they could see Murphy shouting at kids and teenagers.

Clarke roughly shoves him. "You son of a bitch!"

Murphy chuckles. "What's your problem?"

"Recognize this?" Clarke asks as she holds up his knife.

"It's my knife. Where'd you find it?" Murphy questions, reaching for it but the blonde held it back.

"Where you dropped it after you killed Wells." Clarke states.

"Where I what?" Murphy asks. "The grounders killed Wells, not me."

"I know what you did, and you're gonna pay for it." Clarke tells him.

"Really? Bellamy, you really believe this crap?" Murphy questions as he looks over Clarke's shoulder.

Bellamy, however, doesn't respond to his question as he crosses his arms.

"You threatened to kill him. We all heard you. You hated Wells." Y/n reminds, intervening as she stops beside her sister.

"Plenty of people hated Wells. His father was the Chancellor that locked us up." Murphy argues.

"Yeah, but you're the only one who got in a knife fight with him." Y/n recalls.

"Yeah, I didn't kill him then, either." Murphy states.

"Tried to kill Jasper, too." Octavia adds out loud.

Hearing the chatter of the crowd, Murphy glances between everyone. "Come on. This is ridiculous. I don't have to answer to you. I don't have to answer to anyone."

"Come again?" Bellamy suddenly speaks.

Murphy looks to him. "Bellamy, look, I'm telling you, man. I didn't do this."

"They found his fingers on the ground with your knife." Bellamy replies.

"Is this the kind of society that we want? You say there should be no rules. Does that mean we can kill each other without punishment?" Clarke asks the crowd of teenagers.

"I already told you. I didn't kill anyone." Murphy repeats.

"I say we float him." The same boy Murphy had peed on intervenes, getting agreements from the crowd.

"That's not what she's saying." Y/n states, motioning to her sister.

"Why not? He deserves to float. It's justice." The boy argues.

"Revenge isn't justice." Clarke corrects.

"It's justice. Float him!" The boy yells out.

His words encourage the crowd as they start chanting those exact two words. Murphy wastes no time and runs for it, but he doesn't get far when the crowd surrounds him, using their feet to trip him to the ground. The boy lands with a grunt, where punches and kicks are sent his way. Clarke and Y/n are quick to protest as they try to push their way through the crowd, but many teenagers hold them back, ignoring their shouts.

As they struggled against peoples grips, they watch as some prisoners tie Murphy's hands behind his back, then placing part of a seat belt around his head, covering his mouth so he couldn't speak as they tie it behind his head.

Suddenly, a rope was being thrown over the branch of a tree, the other end going around Murphy's neck. As Clarke and Y/n continue to protest, a few teenagers pull the rope up, causing Murphy to rise as well before they place a stand beneath the boy's feet to keep him steady at the moment.

Clarke shoves Bellamy. "You can stop this! They'll listen to you!"

"Bellamy!" The boy from earlier calls out. "You should do it."

Following his lead, everyone starts chanting their leader's name. Bellamy glances between all of them, seeming to think whether he should take this decision or not. Murphy shakes his head from side to side, pushing the older boy's name out of his mouth.

"I saw you in the woods with Atom. I know you're not a killer." Y/n tries as she looks to Bellamy. "Bellamy, don't do this."

The boy, however, ignores her and Clarke as he walks past them, the sisters immediately following after him. They watch as the oldest Blake sibling pushes the stand from under Murphy's feet, the boy now hanging in mid-air as the air from his lungs slowly fades away. Clarke and Y/n let out loud cries at the sight.

"This is on you, princess." Bellamy accuses, looking to Clarke. "You should've kept your mouth shut."

Just then, Finn comes into view. "What the hell are you doing? Cut him down! Charlotte, get out of here now! Cut him down!"

Stomping forward, Finn goes towards Murphy, only to be pushed back by the same boy who had suggested floating Murphy in the first place.

"Stop! Okay? Murphy didn't kill Wells!" A high-pitched voice yells out, making everyone look over as they quiet down, all of them seeing Charlotte standing there. "I did!"

After her words, Clarke instantly grabbed Bellamy's hatchet, cutting down the rope, watching as Murphy falls to the ground, where Y/n and Finn were kneeling in front of him in a second, concern written on their faces.
