CHAPTER NINETEEN:
"YOU ARE STRONG AND SMART."
Camp Jaha was as normal as it always has been, full of people from the sky in space as they did whatever they were doing. The sun was still hiding behind the grey-ish-white clouds as it seemed to be doing quite lately, the bright light that was always seen not shining down on the civilians of the Ark and the grounders.
Only a day or so had gone by since the incident at Tondc with Raven being accused of trying to kill the commander and then Gustus dying by the hands of Lexa after finding out it was actually him and not Raven. Lincoln decided to lead Bellamy to Mount Weather through the caves, considering he knew where to go and more about them than the Blake boy did.
Inside the Ark that was a bit full of some sky people as the grounders could be seen walking inside, Y/n was leaning against the wall beside Octavia as they watched the grounders walk inside. Murphy could be seen in the room as well, also leaning against the wall as he held a cup in his hand.
Following the grounders inside, Jaha and Kane were quietly speaking to each other. The grounders all stood around the room, Indra being one of the grounders as Octavia and Y/n took notice she didn't look happy to be there, and she wasn't.
"I know we don't have a lot in common, but we do have a common enemy and a common goal. For us to reach it, to get our people out of Mount Weather, we need to work together... Together. Sky people... and Tree people." Kane announces, speaking in grounder language that he had learned.
As the man continued speaking, Y/n glanced around, meeting Indra's eyes to see her eyes were a bit narrowed on her before she saw the woman's eyes cast around her face, no doubt looking at the cut she left there.
All of a sudden, a loud clink filled the air, catching everyone's attention as their heads snapped over, seeing Murphy was now standing in front of a grounder, the two males glaring at one another while the cup the blue eyed boy held before was now laying on the floor beside them.
"Mr. Murphy, apologize to that man." Kane demands.
"For what?" Murphy asks. "He was the one who came at me."
"Two days work detail." Kane tells him.
"Work detail? I just told you, I didn't do--" Murphy starts.
"Care to make it three?" Kane interrupts.
Not bothering to answer as he clenches his jaw, the blue eyed boy turns around and begins to walk up, but the next thing they all knew, he was spinning around as his fist met the grounder's face.
The grounder was quick to reciprocate his actions as they began to fight one another while everyone else was rushing forward, shouts escaping them. Y/n found herself pushing through the crowd and pushing the people away, shouting at them as well to get them to stop, all while Indra watched her with narrowed, curious eyes.
The sun was still hiding behind the grey-ish-white clouds high in the sky as a crowd had been formed outside of the Ark in Camp Jaha, the sky people watching as Indra ordered her people around as the grounders fought against one another for training.
Octavia and Y/n found themselves walking side by side and towards the circle that had been made as they stopped beside Kane, who had been watching the entire thing with crossed arms, not bothering to intervene as he wanted to get on the grounders good side so the alliance would work out better. Eventually, the man noticed the teenage girls beside him and glanced between them.
"Impressive, aren't they?" Kane comments. "What doesn't kill them makes them stronger."
"Good, Fio. Who's next?" Indra calls out.
Octavia steps forward. "I am."
Kane and Y/n couldn't help but share a slight confused look as she stops beside Indra, speaking to her that it was only loud enough for them to hear and no one else. They watched as Indra stepped away from her, calling out to someone else to get in the ring they had made while Octavia clenches her jaw, walking off.
As more continued to fight, Y/n soon found herself sitting with Octavia as they quietly spoke to one another, both sitting right near the guards where they were pulling the trigger on their guns, the bullets hitting logs as they trained. It surprised Y/n that the girl was actually talking to her, even after what happened at Lincoln's village.
While Octavia was cleaning the blade of her sword, she watched as Y/n declined when one of the guards offered her to shoot at the logs, declining it almost immediately. The Blake girl stared at the Griffin girl, seeing her look down at her hands. In all honesty, Y/n didn't trust herself with a gun or anything after what happened.
She felt her hands shake whenever she'd touch one. Soon enough, Kane was walking up while instructing the guards to take deep breaths as the bullet would miss the logs they had up. Behind them, three grounders were walking up, the one in the middle being the one who had gotten into a fight with Murphy.
Kane soon noticed them when one of the guards told him they had an audience, seeing the slight disbelief expressions on their faces. Holding his hand out to one of the guards, the guard handed the gun to Kane before he rose it up, aiming it at the logs before pulling the trigger, the bullets hitting both logs when he moved the direction to both of them. After lowering the gun, he turns to the grounders who had been watching the entire thing.
"Would you like to try?" Kane questions as he walks over, holding the gun out. "I could teach you. Your enemy has guns. So should you."
"Penn! Stand down!" Indra's voice shouts when the grounder went to grab the gun slowly, all of them seeing her stomp over. "You know better."
"It's alright. I offered." Kane assures.
"We don't need your weapons. Back to training, all of you." Indra demands.
With that, she stomps off and back to where her own people were training with two of the grounders following behind her. The grounder, now known as Penn, looked between Kane and the gun before he followed his people, being the last one to leave.
"Guns could keep them alive. It's like they're afraid of them." Kane points out.
"They are." Octavia speaks up, making them look at her. "Legend has it, if a grounder picks up a gun, even to shoot another grounder, Mount Weather will wipe out their entire village. Can't have your blood supply defending themselves, right?"
"If we don't arm them, we can't win." Kane states.
"Like hell, we can't." Octavia replies.
They watch as the Blake girl shoots up to her feet, sheathing her sword into it's holster before stomping up, leaving Kane, Y/n and the guard beside Kane to watch her stomp off and in a different direction, glancing at the fighting going on beside her.
"We don't know enough about these people." Kane mumbles.
Y/n sighs, standing up. "Octavia sure does. Lincoln must've told her stuff."
The night sky was now up on the planet earth as rain was pouring down from the sky and onto the ground, turning the dry dirt on the ground that blended into grass into mud as the raindrops slammed against the ground. Inside the Ark, Y/n could be seen standing in the medical part of the Ark as she helped the doctors clean around as she had nothing else to do.
Hearing the sound of grunting, followed by Kane's voice, the girl looks over to see the man had Octavia's arm around his shoulders as the Blake girl was all beaten up, blood on her face from the cuts that laid there. Placing the stuff she had down, the Griffin girl was quick to walk over, wrapping Octavia's other arm around her shoulders as she led her to one of the beds in the room as Kane explained what happened. Octavia had gotten her fight against the grounder, but was beaten badly instead of what she hoped.
Instead of the doctors, the e/c eyed girl helped her friend with her cuts as Kane walked back out. At the sound of footsteps, the girls look over to see Indra walking in, glancing between them. Gulping, Y/n steps away and goes to the other side of the room, facing her back to them.
Octavia sighs. "What do you want?"
"You fought like a child today-- all aggression, no thought, no defense, always leaving yourself exposed, revealing your next move before each strike." Indra lists off.
"Okay. I know. I got my ass kicked. That should make you happy." Octavia states.
Indra nods. "It does... because you did not give up. Strength of spirit like that is rare. It must be guided. Do you know what a warrior's second is?"
"An apprentice." Octavia recalls in response.
"I can make you a great warrior, Octavia of the sky people, if you're willing to do what it takes to become my second." Indra informs.
"What's in it for you?" Octavia asks.
"First lesson-- never question me." Indra instructs.
"Okay. I'm in." Octavia tells her.
"Good." Indra replies, looking to the only other person in the room. "Now you."
Feeling her body tense up, Y/n stops what she was doing with the supplies as she had been putting them away, slowly glancing over her shoulder to see Indra staring at her while Octavia looked at the grounder with furrowed brows. The e/c eyed girl furrowed her brows, placing the stuff she was holding down before turning to face the woman who stood up, keeping her eyes on her.
"I may not like you much for what you did to my people, but I will admit, you are strong and smart. You proved that back at Tondc. You're fast and from what I saw that night, you can take the pain that you're given. I can make you, as well, a great warrior, Y/n of the sky people, if you accept." Indra explains.
At her words, the Griffin girl's eyes widen as she glances at Octavia, seeing the brunette glancing between them with a slight smile. Y/n watched as the Blake girl nods at her a bit, silently encouraging her to say yes, but only if she actually wanted to.
Y/n nods. "I'm, uh... I'm in."
"Good." Indra repeats her previous words, beginning to walk out of the room. "We'll start tomorrow."
