𝐢𝐱. Improving vampire mates in fanfiction

I think vampire mates don't need much improvement. Refining? Yes, but just bits and pieces of it.

I think we all already know in fanon knowledge that Blood Singer and True Mates have a vast difference. Let us use Edward Cullen and Isabella Swan as the prime example. Bella is Edward's blood singer, and her blood is ten times more tempting than any human blood, which is only meant for Edward. The Cullens have encountered their fair share of blood singers, mostly from

Emmett, who met his blood singer twice and killed both, so they had to move-that's canon information, by the way. He met them when he was already mated to Rosalie. See? Disposable, LOL.

I also think that Blood Singers are not destined to have romantic interests because they're meant to be sucked dry, LOL. But Edward and Bella are the exceptions. Obviously, they always are the exceptions.

Blood singers are meant to be consumed. It's like vampire easter egg hunts; it's rare and a delicacy. Blood singer's blood is meant to be enjoyed by a vampire. I like to think that blood singers are created so that vampires can have fun occasionally, something they can look forward to when it comes to vampirism. A vampire is not meant to resist their blood singer. But you know, Edward is a little shit anyway and decided to prove to himself that his restraint is better than anyone.

In fanon, true mates for a vampire and human, the human's blood is not meant to be tempting at all. The vampire is meant to feel more human when they're with their true mate as if they cannot be tempted by their blood at all. The vampire are so at peace with them because they're not tempted to drink their human lover dry.

In my fanfiction, I treated vampire mating a bit differently. I added my own take to it; it was the opposite of imprinting when I already explained that the shifter has no choice but to fit into their imprintee's needs. This is much like soulmates, BUT both vampires can be mated forever, and making that choice solidifies the bond's permanency. So, for my fics, mating is a choice. Because they didn't even have an option to be vampires in the first place, the least I could do was choose who they wanted to be fated with forever.

The only thing I want to refine regarding vampire mates is the bond; most of the earlier fics here are about instant love. I even admit to doing that to my first Twilight fic, Redamancy, and I will tell you right now, I can't even read that fic without feeling cringe, LOL. Look, I get it; what's the point of having a slow-burn romance when they both know they're already meant to be together for eternity? Like, that's my point for the slow burn; they are going to be together forever, so you don't need them to be instantly in love because they have their whole eternity to be in love.

Slow burn is so good. Like it's my favorite trope, the longing, yearning, angst, and waiting, GIVE IT TO ME. This is not for your character's sake. It's for your reader's sake. Everyone wants to read both characters who are yearning to be with each other, and they both feel like they can't, y'know? Either because of their past or because of their self-loathing. Like the inner battle within them to be, "Fuck it, I love you," or "I can't be with you,"

That's delicious to read. It's so satisfying when they finally get to hold hands or when they kiss for the first time like that's the pay of reading a slow burn. Reading the character's chemistry with each other.

That's what I would like to see more refined when it comes to vampire mating. The connection, chemistry, and bond. It's like usually when I read a fanfic here, then it's instant love; the minute they get together, it's just bland and boring-and the story is just beginning; I'M SORRY; I'm just being honest.

Overall, I do prefer vampire mating over imprinting. Because Smeyer just made imprinting weird, with imprinting on toddlers, tbh. But yeah, there's not much to improve over.

I think new fanfic Twilight writers need to be more into the fandom, like digging deeper into the fanon and canon lore to differentiate between true mates and blood singers. My advice is just to read a lot of fanfiction that dates back to 2019 or during the pandemic cause that's where all the OG fanfic Twilight writers who got busy in life go back to WP because of the lockdown, like they know their lore. Trust that they-we know what we're writing about.
