CHAPTER 𝐈
camp's girl's girl meets her dream boy
LOOK, SCARLETT HART didn't want to be a half-blood. She would love to travel in time, back to her past life, and see what horrible thing she did that deemed her this fate.
Ever since she was a child, she knew she was different. Anger and resentment coursed through her veins more than an average person should. It started in kindergarten, some kid she hated stole her favorite pencil. She remembered feeling really upset. Like, way more than you should over some pencil. Scarlett still remembered how her classmate screamed, as she jabbed the pencil straight through his skin. She'll admit now that it was a little too far.
The school expelled her, of course, so her father her a private school to attend. It went well for a while, and she even had people she called friends. However, that changed at the end of fourth grade. They excluded her from their hangouts, and basically pretended she never existed.
In Scarlett's defense, the girl she fought was Regina George wannabe, making fun of other kids. Also, Scarlett didn't even start the fight. The girl pulled her hair, so she shoved her against a locker, and punched her in retaliation. A little more than once.
After that incident, her father finally realized that he couldn't keep pretending she was normal. So that summer, he dropped nine-year old Scarlett at Camp Half-Blood.
Scarlett became a resident member of cabin eleven. Not because she was a daughter of Hermes, but because she was the daughter of the minor goddess, Nemesis—though she wasn't officially claimed yet. Even if she did, the cabins were for the twelve Olympian Gods, so there wouldn't be any place for her anyway.
In her three years of camp, Scarlett was able to make a few friends. She preferred being alone most of the time, and many tended to avoid her unless they needed something.
Kids were scared of the Ares cabin because they could pulverize you. But, Scarlett? She would make sure your life is miserable for however long she decided. Her power to cause misfortune, as well as creative schemes, caused many to stay clear of her. Everyone was so caught up with the bad, not a lot of people remember she can grant good fortune as well.
It's not like Scarlett has done anything to do damage control for her reputation; all those terrible rumors about her were most likely true.
If campers were super desperate, they came to her so she could solve disputes. All her opinions were fair and based off appropriate evidence. Since she didn't really care about anyone, she didn't care about hurting their feelings.
She was on good terms with other unclaimed kids, since they all had some mutual understanding. Scarlett clicked with this older boy named Ethan her first year, but he disappeared. She became good friends with Oliver Sawyer, who was an unclaimed son of Tysche, goddess of fortune. He arrived to camp the same year as her. They fought over things, but also respected each other. There were also some Hermes kids who she got along with, like Luke Castellan, who was everyone's big brother at camp.
Then there was Annabeth Chase. Scarlett didn't know how exactly they became best friends. In all honesty, she didn't even like her at first. Annabeth's hubris annoyed her, but over time, Scarlett found herself enjoying her company. Maybe it was also because she was one of the first people, who genuinely wanted to talk to her and help her get settled. Scarlett returned that favor by getting revenge on Connor Stoll for putting spiders in her cabin. From there, their friendship grew on.
Lately, Annabeth has been going on and on about this boy who was going to grant her a quest. It's been her dream since forever.
As much as Scarlett didn't want to admit it, a part of her longed for a quest as well. She wanted to be recognized, give the gods no choice but to acknowledge her. Force her mother remember she existed, and eventually claim her.
"I'm telling you, Scar!" Annabeth told her excitedly, as they headed to the Dining Pavilion for dinner. "It's going to be soon. I know it."
"Annabeth, you say this like every week." Scarlett scoffed. "calm down."
"I'm sure about it this time! I can feel it."
"That's what you said the last time. And the time before that. And before that. And—"
"Okay, okay, fine," she huffed exasperated, knowing she was right. "But I swear it's different this time. Truly different."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night," Scarlett rolled her eyes, leaving to go sit at her table with the rest of her cabin.
She took her usual seat next to Oliver, who was glaring at her. His black curly hair slightly covering his eyes.
"Um...can I help you?"
"Any idea on why Johnny's hair caught on fire?" Oliver raised an eyebrow.
"Johnny...?" Scarlett blinked, feigning confusion.
"Johnny Harper from the Hephaestus cabin?" Oliver folded his arms, blowing the curls out his face. "Ring any bells?"
"Well since he's the son of Hephaestus, god of fire, then shouldn't he be like...immune to it or something?" Scarlett shrugged. "Also why are you immediately pointing fingers at me?"
Oliver gave her a look. "I know you, Scar. You and your schemes. They rival the Stolls."
"Hey, I take offense to that," Scarlett scoffed. "I'm much better than them, and shouldn't even be compared, thank you very much." she took a bite of her bread. "Also, karma got him, not me. He was also long overdue for a haircut."
"Well you're not wrong about him needing that haircut," Oliver sighed. "Look, can you tone it down? It's not like he deserves all the luck in the world but..."
In her opinion, Oliver was too nice—which was both a good and bad trait. While he did have the power to spread good luck, if a person didn't deserve it, he could decrease it. He rarely wanted to do that, so that's where Scarlett came in.
"Ollie look," Scarlett interrupted. "He got what he deserved, okay? He's got an ego bigger than the sun itself. Even Beckendorf was fed up with him. Have you heard the things he said about the Aphrodite girls? He's disgusting."
"What did he say exactly?"
Scarlett told him the nasty things she heard, and Oliver's eyes widen.
"You're right. He deserved it, and I will eat my words." he instantly agreed.
Scarlett grinned. "I always am."
She looked over to the Hesphaestus table. Johnny had a bald head, seeming ashamed. Charles Beckendorf, caught her eye, and gave her a look that Scarlett interpreted as: It may have been too far, but he also deserved it. Scarlet just nodded, and turned back to Oliver with a satisfied smirk.
"You're scary, you know." Oliver chuckled.
"I've heard that before."
As they continued eating their meals, they can hear whispers of campers around them.
"I heard she caused Johnny to lose his hair."
"She's crazy!"
"Why did she even do it? Poor Johnny!"
"Ew, he looks so ugly!"
Scarlett rolled her eyes. Oliver gave her a sympathetic look. "Can't you try to tell them why you did it?"
"The only kind of girl they see is a girl who obsesses over making people miserable. Which honestly? Isn't so far fetched," She shrugged carelessly.
"You don't obsess over making people miserable. You did it for a reason," Oliver pointed out. "You spread good fortune too. You gave that little Demeter girl good luck during sword-fighting practice because everyone kept making fun of her!" he recalled.
"It's not my fault they're too dumb to notice." Scarlett told him. "also I barely had to help her. She wowed everyone all on her own."
"You know, you're actually kind of nice when you want to be."
"Why thank you." Scarlett's eyes trailed over to the Ares table across from them.
"Okay, do you see that guy, Jacob, over there?" she pointed, at the ginger haired boy who just called her crazy. "The Ares boy?"
"Yes, and also don't point," Oliver put her hand down. "it's ill-mannered."
"That's beside the point."
"He's going to know you're on to him."
Jacob glanced in their direction, noticing he caught Scarlett's attention. His eyes widen in panic as Scarlett continued to stare him down. Then he quickly looked away.
"Good, let him squirm." she smirked, looking back at Oliver. "Because apparently Rose started suspecting he was cheating on her..."
"No," Oliver gasped. "That scumbag!"
"Mhm," Scarlett took a sip of her drink, looking back at the Ares boy. "she asked me to set him straight."
Jacob looked at her again, his eyes pleading to let whatever she knew go.
Scarlett gave him a wink to mess with him. He instantly looked down to the floor.
She turned her attention back to Oliver. "Obviously, I still need to investigate. But the signs aren't looking good for him."
Her view of Jacob gets blocked, when Luke Castellan decided to sit in front of them.
"Alright, what are you plotting now?" Luke narrowed his eyes at her, but she could see he's slightly amused.
"I have no idea what you're talking about." Scarlett feigned innocence.
"I've been hearing some complaints."
"Oh?"
"Beckendorf told me what you did to Johnny."
Scarlett just nodded, not even denying it.
"You know, what?" Luke glanced around for dramatics, then leaned in to whisper. "I never liked that kid anyway." he said with a wry smile.
"Thank you!" Scarlett grinned, feeling even more validated. "it fits him much more!"
"So care to tell me why it looks like Jacob looks like your next victim?"
"Rose thinks he's cheating on her with Lia."
Luke's brows knit in confusion. "Wait, I thought he was dating Lia?"
"No, he's dating Rose."
"He was totally flirting with Lia at sword fighting practice today," Luke recalled with a frown. "I had to call them out today because they were being too touchy."
Scarlett and Oliver exchange knowing looks.
"How long have they been doing that?"
"For the past two months, maybe?"
"That rotten toad!" Oliver said with disgust. "and to think I gave him extra luck during archery practice because I felt bad he kept missing!"
"Thank you for being useful." Scarlett told Luke, in a diplomatic tone. "It's very much appreciated."
Luke rolled his eyes, letting out a laugh. "As long as you keep my name out this, knock yourself out with that information, kid." he stood up, reaching over to ruffle Scarlett's hair.
He looked over at Oliver, then ruffled his hair as well. "Make sure she doesn't kill anyone."
"Will do." Oliver nodded solemnly, as Luke walked away.
"So what plans do you have in mind, troublemaker?" Oliver asked amusedly.
"Just you wait." Scarlett smirked mischievously, feeling in her element.
Because there was nothing in this world that Scarlett Hart did better than revenge.
THAT NIGHT, Scarlett dreamed of a strange of blonde haired boy. For the past few months, this weird boy kept popping up in her dreams. He looked about her age, had blonde hair, and ocean blue eyes.
He was at a boarding school, which Scarlett recognized as Yancy Academy. The same one she got kicked out of years ago. It looked like he was playing a card game with his friend — who she soon realized was a satyr named Grover Underwood. Scarlett knew that Grover was at some private school with a Chiron, scouting a demigod there.
Then, the scene shifted. It was dark and rainy. The boy had a sword, and was fighting a Minotaur. Somehow, he ended up defeating it.
The scene changed again. This time, she was in it. They were sitting on a dock by the water. There was a blue cupcake on the side. The boy was smiling at her. A soft smile. Looking at her like he was in love or something. Ew.
He leaned in closer to her, as if he was going to...
"Scar!" Oliver shook her shoulder, waking her up.
"What?" Scarlett groaned.
"Something's going on, outside," He quickly exclaimed. "Come on!"
Scarlett sat up, and noticed everyone else in their cabin going out the door. She stood up and walked over to Luke, "What happened?"
He shrugged. They all made their way to where all the commotion was: the camp entrance.
"Is he okay?"
"Alone?"
"How is that possible?"
"Yeah, he's okay."
Scarlett shoved her way through the crowd, making her way to Annabeth. With a flashlight shining, she was able to see exactly who everyone was looking at: a blonde boy barely conscious on the ground.
Scarlett froze in place.
Wait a minute.
She knew this kid.
His blonde curls.
Blue eyes fighting to stay open.
"Look, Scar!" Annabeth exclaimed. "He must be the one."
"Hush, Annabeth," Chiron told her. "He's waking. Everyone, give him some space, please."
Everyone began to back up.
"Percy Jackson, welcome to Camp Half-Blood." Chiron announced.
Percy Jackson.
The boy from her dreams.
Right in front of her.
Holy shit.
Maybe there was something about him after all.
