Chapter Thirteen

Thomas and I leaped down from the lookout and helped the rest of the Gladers search for the missing girl. She couldn't have gone far, unless she saw the maze and tried to make a run for it. Gladers everywhere sprawled out across the Glade searching for the missing girl. Some split up and looked around the Deadheads and Bloodhouse while I met up with Gally and looked through the Homestead.

"I never liked her." Gally grumbled as we looked around the inside of the Homestead.

I'm sure he was still upset from earlier, as was I, but it always takes him longer to cool down, "We'll you seemed to like me when I came up in the box."

Gally's eyes shot up and met with mine, "No I didn't." he sputtered, "Not before we interrogated you then I showed you around."

I laughed at his sharp reaction, "Geez, you're easy to peeve." I joked.

Gally took a step towards me and smirked. He walked towards me with a smug look across his face. I stumbled backwards until my back met one of the walls. Gally pressed himself closer to me and placed both hands on either side of me against the wall, enclosing me in his presence. I let out a small breath before he leaned closer to my ear, "And you're easy to tease," he whispered, his words brushing against my sensitive skin.

I scoffed before shoving him off of me, "Oh, you wish."

Just as he got off of me, Frypan bursted through the door, "We- am I interrupting something?"

"No!" we both gawked. Although he didn't look too convinced.

"Hm. Anyway, we found the girl, but you two seem more interested in each other." Fry teased. Gally jokingly rolled up both his sleeves and lumbered over to Fry, "Shit!" he yelled before running back outside. Gally and I both laughed at his face, he looked like he'd just klunked his pants.

We collected ourselves, then joined the rest of the boys outside. We watched as most of them ran towards a slender figure with long black hair, it must've been the girl. A group of boys chased after her as she swiftly climbed up the ladder of the lookout where Thomas and I were seated earlier. She seemed to be carrying something across her arm, but I couldn't tell what it was. Gally and I ran over to the group, meeting Newt who came across the other side of the Glade. The closer we got, I saw something rain down on the Gladers below her. She seemed to be dropping rocks onto them like little bombs; that's probably what she was carrying.

One rock landed right beside Gally's foot once we met up with Newt at the front of the group. He jumped back and swore up at the girl.

"C'mon down!" New shouted, before one of the rocks fell right in front of him, "Hey!"

Behind us, Zart and some other boys had brought shields of giant pot lids and square wood planks, "Zart! Pass one!" when Zart tossed one of the pot covers to me, one of the girl's ammo skimmed past my head. I shielded the top of my head, then went back to join Gally who unfortunately had no protection.

"Leave me alone!" the girl's high voice demanded.

His hands covered his head, "Hey throw one more of those thing I'm-OW!" one of the girl's rocks had struck him right on his noggin.

I couldn't help but laugh at the situation, "I'm liking her!" I chuckled. Gally shot me another one of his infamous death glares but it only made me laugh harder. Suddenly, I remembered how when she first came up in the box, the only thing she said was Thomas. I sharply looked across the Glade for Jeff and Clint, who'd been watching her more closely, "Clint, Jeff!" I called out when the two of them caught my eye, "Go find Thomas! He's probably with Minho." The two of them nodded and adhered to my instructions.

After a few more minutes of being rained on by heavy stones, Thomas and Minho joined the commotion, "What's going on?" Thomas asked frantically. It didn't take long for him to notice the source of where the stones were falling from.

"I don't think she likes us very much!" Newt pointed out, ducking under a shield Frypan was holding over them.

"I think she wants you." I told Thomas.

"Go away!" she demanded from above.

Thomas took in a deep breath before calling out to the girl, "Hey! It's me Thomas, I just want to talk." The flying stones halted all at once and the girl popped her head over the edge of the Look out, "I'm gonna come up, okay?" She tucked her head back behind the floor of the platform and the rest of us relaxed, lowering our protection. Gally looked ready to run up there and beat the klunk out of her, "Just me." Thomas reassured him before climbing up the ladder himself.

With nothing else to see, Newt started to usher us away from the situtaion. Before we all left, Frypan threw in another witty comment, "Is this what all girls are like?" I took a double take and turned to him, confused by his question but quickly laughed it off with a few other boys.

The other Med-Jacks had already ran off, probably to go check on Alby. Just as I was about to walk into the direction of the Med-hut, Newt pulled me aside. He wore a concerned face; I felt bad for him. All of a sudden he'd been thrown into being in charge after Alby's sting. He didn't look like it, but he was probably the strongest of all of us. He really didn't deserve me shunning him, but a small piece of me couldn't help but feel slightly betrayed. I needed to let that piece go.

Newt took a quick glance around us to make sure no one else was too close by, especially Gally, "Did you know about Terea?" I stared at him confused, "Well you remembered Tommy. Anything about her?" I shook my head. If I'd known something I would've told him immediately, "Alright. I trust you Marty." I relaxed a little, like he had pulled me out from deep under the pressure of the ocean. I didn't enjoy blaming him for my misery that night. I hated myself for it, but I couldn't control myself. What he did wasn't right, but it wasn't like him to do something like that. So many Gladers lives had been lost, I knew of the weight that put on him, so it doesn't add up why he'd risk Gally's life.

I don't think he understood how scared I was when I first came. I only told him now because I was positive what I remembered wasn't just some random dream I had. Besides, I was more comfortable with the boys than I was back then. They were my brothers, the only family I would likely ever had. I know there's someone-a family-beyond those walls waiting for me, but I don't think my bond with them will ever be as strong as the one I built with the boys here.

Just as Newt started to walk away, Thomas' voice came from behind me, "Marty!" He shouted from halfway down the ladder. He waved something in his hand, but it was too far too see, "I think Teresa's got the serum!"

* * *

Six of us hovered over Alby who grunted out of conscious. The stripes of blue that travelled up from the hole in his side were more prominent than the day before. His hands were still strapped together, his wrists grew irritated from his attempts to break free. He breathed in through his gritted teeth and continued to struggle in his cot. Newt paced across the room, his face resting in his palm.

Thomas handed over one of the tubes of serum, "Where'd you even get this." I asked the girl, who we now knew as Teresa.

She simply shrugged, "I found them in my pocket when I came up." I turned back at Newt, I could tell we were both wondering why the creators had sent up the serum with her, and not along with the usual supplies.

"Alright, no point in waiting. Clint, Jeff, on stand by." I instructed, "Thomas, help us out incase he freaks."

As I took of the cap and prepared to use the serum, Thomas leaned towards Alby in curiosity. Just before I could stick the needle into the patient's arms, Alby had shot up awake. His eyes were an abyss of black and beads of sweat rolled down his forehead. His arms lunged out for Thomas and gripped him by his shirt, pulling him closer. Clint, Jeff and Newt tried to pull Alby's arms away from Thomas, but something wasn't right. Alby wasn't himself at all.

"You shouldn't be here!" Alby screamed at Thomas, thrashing the both of them back and forth. He repeated his words once again then continued shouting nonsense. Teresa jumped back and I stepped in, jabbing the syringe into Alby's arm. Almost instantly, he let go of Thomas and fell back into his cot, slipping into unconsciousness.

All of us panted as we recovered from the situation. Newt was the first one to speak up, "Okay from now on, someone watches him around the clock."

The Med-Jacks and I all looked around at one another. One of us would have to spend the night alone with him, "I'll watch him tonight." I volunteered. I knew I'd be exhausted in the morning, so Clint and Jeff better enjoy their sleeps tonight.

"Hey." someone snuck into the back of the hut without any of us noticing. Slightly frightened, we all turned back to see who had joined us, "Sundown greenie, time to go." The crickets sung in the background as Gally stood in the doorway ready to escort Thomas away. So much had happened that I completely forgotten we were to punish him. Thomas walked away, Gally following behind.

Newt focused his attention on me, "Marty, pit in for the night. You three, off to bed. I'll show you to your hammock, Teresa." The four of them left the dark room, leaving me alone with Alby. At least he was calm down and he'd taken the serum. Hopefully it would all be smooth sailing from here.

As I folded up a blanket and laid it across one of the other cots, murmurs from outside made it's way through the hut's walls. Carefully, I peeked outside and observed as Gally led Thomas towards the pit. The cool breeze nipped at my arms. It was still as humid as it was this afternoon, but the air itself had a coolness to it, like a drink with ice in it mixed with the warm air, creating a dew on the side of the glass. It were memories like this that confused me. The creators hadn't wiped away small things like that, but they took anything associated with the cold glass. If I had remembered my mother bringing out a glass of ice water on a hot day, I'd remember the glass, but not where I was or who had given it to me.

I saw Gally speak to Thomas, supposedly irritated by him. He led Thomas into the pit and shut the cage door on him. He walked back to me, the torch in his hand illuminated his aggravated face. The wind blew in my direction and nipped at my bare arms. As he came closer I could feel the warmth of the flame against my skin. It soothed me and I took a seat, leaning against the wall of the Med Hut and patted the ground beside me suggesting Gally take a seat. He stuck the torch into the ground then sat close to me, leaving very little space between us.

"What'd you say to Thomas." I questioned.

Gally didn't look at me. His eyes focused on the flames flickering in front of him, "That shank knows something. Everything started changing when he showed up." I stayed silent and allowed him to continue, "I recognize him. I don't know where or how but his face...I swear I saw him during..."

"The changing," I added, "do you know what you saw exactly?"

He shook his head, "Nah, just his shucking face. But if anyone does remember anything about him or Teresa, they should speak up."

I hoped he didn't notice my gulp. I'm glad I only told Newt about Thomas and didn't make a big ordeal out of it. Normally, I would trust Gally with anything. But, Newt handled my situation much better than I imagined Gally would have. It was silent for a moment, he was waiting for an answer, "Yeah." I mumbled. The wind brushed past us once again, it stroked my arms and made me shiver. Gally snuck his arm around me and pulled me closer to him, his warmth curing the goosebumps on me instantly. I curled up in his arms and nuzzled the side of my face into his chest.

His chin rested on the top of my head, "What happens if we don't get out of here?" He asked with a sense of fear in his voice. I could feel his jaw move when he spoke.

"We will." I answered softly.

Gally took a moment to respond, "I don't think I want to. To be honest I don't think I can." I understood his pain, not fully, but just enough. As much as I felt safe here in the Glade surrounded by the people I trust, I know we can't stay here. I've known that the minute I came up in the box all dazed and sweaty. I sat up a little bit, his arm didn't let go of me. My stomach felt that familiar boiling tickle. Before I allowed myself to think too hard, I slowly leaned closer to him, my lips begged for his touch.

Without warning, a little red light flashed across his face. His eyes fluttered a little before grabbing a rock from his side and chucking it in the direction where the bright beam came from. I let out a little yelp, not expecting his speedy reflexed. I heard the rock thud against a nearby tree, followed by a faint crunch.

"God damn beetle blade." Gally grumbled.

"Nice aim." I puffed, still taken aback by the little intruder, "I probably could've hit that though." I jeered at him.

His eyes sharply examined me up and down, "Yeah right," he scoffed, "You could barely pick up a plank!"

Unfortunately, there was some truth to his mockery, "Yeah well, I could shoot it with my eyes closed." I laughed but my face immediately dropped.

"What?"

"Nothing." I stammered.

Gally's eyes squinted and his brows furrowed, "Marty." he scolded.

I breathed, "I um, sometimes...take one of the bows from the Map Room and...borrow it." I gave him an awkward smile, praying he wouldn't be too upset.

His face didn't change, but for a second it looked like a little lightbulb went of in his head, "Ben's leg...," he said under his breath, "Weren't you in the Deadheads that morning?"

"...yeah."

His face relaxed. I was expecting another lecture, but all he did was snicker then let out a deep sigh, "You are one slinthead, Martha." I gave him a quick sock to the arm, "Ow! Sorry! Fine I won't call you that." I lightly snorted, appreciating the consideration.

Gally's arm found it's place back around me and I relaxed in his embrace. The stars above were clearer now as they tucked me away into a deep sleep.
