Chapter 21

Keefe was not ready for this.

He didn't know if this was going to go as planned.

He wasn't even sure if Sophie would even like his song.

He didn't know if this was a good idea.

What bothered him the most was the fact that there were so many 'what if's'. So many things that could go wrong.

"Don't worry too much, Keefe. You'll do fine." Fitz reassured him.

"And how are you so sure, 'Mr. Perfect'?" Keefe sighed.

Fitz raised an eyebrow. "Okay one, never call me that again. Two, because I believe in you."

"That sounds sappy." Keefe deadpanned.

"Will you ever take some credit for yourself?"

"I dunno. I mean, it's not like I deserve it. I'm a horrible person, I can't even come up with a decent apology." he grumbled.

"Not everyone is perfect Keefe, not even me." Fitz said, shrugging.

"That really helps Fitz."

"You know what I mean!"

Keefe suppressed a small grin. He knew Fitz was only trying to lift his spirits. He also knew that it wasn't helping that much.

Currently, the boys were waiting in an empty room by the gym, away from the main dance. The plan was to perform the song in front of everyone, but Keefe was having second thoughts about that.

"I still don't think this is a solid plan." he said, letting out a frustrated groan.

Fitz pointed at Keefe. "Well then do you have a better idea?"

Keefe faltered for a split second, but quickly recovered. He knew what he was doing, right?
"Maybe I could sing her the song, but only to her. You said it yourself, I'm not here for autographs, I'm here to show Sophie how I really feel." he pointed out.

"I see you're starting to quote from the Fitzer," Fitz said, smirking. "And you probably came up with your first decent idea on your own." he joked.

Keefe rolled his eyes. "I can come up with my own plans."

"Keep telling yourself that."

"Gladly."

Keefe hoped this would work. Because if it didn't, he would keep beating himself up for it. For losing one of the only people he cared for.

Too bad I already am.

"Marella, isn't this a little too much blush?" Sophie questioned, clearly unsure about the makeover.

"Soph, relax! Sometimes it's okay to look extra beautiful." Biana nudged Sophie.

Sophie sighed. She wasn't getting out of this one, but she could make sure they didn't go over the top. In the span of ten minutes, Marella had already curled her blonde hair, and Biana had redone her eyeshadow.

Marella was about to reach for eyeliner, but Sophie stopped her.

"Can we cut back on the makeup? I kind of like the 'natural' look better." Sophie said, giving both girls puppy eyes.

Marella scoffed. "'Natural'? I think you've gone mad Soph."

"What's so bad about a natural look?" Sophie whined.

Biana rolled her eyes playfully, and grabbed the eyeliner from Sophie's hands. "It's okay to have some makeup on sometimes Sophie. I promise it won't kill you."

Marella failed to hold back her laugh, while Sophie remained seated, arms folded. She knew this would happen.

But it's not like she minded. Part of her liked her friends' company, and their efforts to make her look 'better'. Another part of her wanted to jump out off the bathroom counter, and run far, far away.

Yet, she was still sitting there, so it was obvious which part of her she listened to.

"Are you both done yet? We're missing homecoming for this." Sophie asked, not bothering to hide her impatience.

Marella faked a gasp. "The Sophie Foster wants to actually spend time at homecoming?!"

Biana joined in, simultaneously applying eyeliner to Sophie's eye. Yeah, I thought The Sophie Foster wanted to stay home?"

"That's not what I meant, and you know it." Sophie grumbled.

The duo had a giggling fit, while Sophie rolled her eyes, attempting to stifle her own laugh. Although she did not want to be at homecoming, it meant she was with her friends, which really mattered.

"Okay, now we are done! Didn't think Sophie would be this patient though." Biana announced to them.

Sophie sighed in relief, and hopped of the counter. Spinning around, her eyes met the mirror. Sophie didn't recognize herself for a split second.

Her hair, which was previously left straight down, was now curled, half of it in a ponytail, the other left down. Her face was covered in a pink blush, almost covering the actual blush creeping on her cheeks. Her brown eyes stood out with the light gold eyeshadow, and simple black eyeliner.

In conclusion, Sophie was impressed.

"So...? How is it? You've been staring at yourself for a good minute now Soph." Marella smirked.

"Well, I definitely did not expect this." Sophie confessed, giving both girls a small smile.

Biana flipped her hair. "That's why we're here Soph. I don't know what you would do without us!" she shrugged.

Sophie rolled her eyes. "I don't know either Biana." she said, sarcastically.

"We should head out now. Poor Dex is waiting out there all alone. Marella reminded them.

"That's what I've been telling you this whole time!" Sophie said, her jaw dropping.

Biana and Marella laughed, not bothering to hide it, walking out of the bathroom with Sophie in tow.

Once the girls were out of the bathroom and into the empty hallway, Marella abruptly left for the gym, mentioning muffins. Biana followed her, also mentioning her hunger.

But Sophie had a feeling that it was more than that. That they knew something she didn't.

What happened after that answered her question.

Sophie heard a voice behind her. An achingly familiar one.

"Hey Sophie..."
