Chapter 58: The Dream

Dobby had been paid for his service for helping Harry, as he had provided the young Potter with Gillyweed, with socks the trio had bought for the House-Elf. Food was being sent out to Sirius every chance they were able to. Hermione and Rubi had one day received letter upon letter full of hate, Hermione more than Rubi, courtesy of Rita Skeeter's false articles, where she had written that Hermione was playing around with Harry's heart. Rubi wanted to punch Skeeter the next time she saw her, especially when one envelope had a certain pus that ended up with Hermione's hands erupting with large yellow boils. The hate mail only continued to arrive for the next while, and now Hermione was dying to find out how Rita Skeeter was listening in on private conversation, and even started her own little investigation.

The Easter Holidays rolled by, a good thing as Rubi was exhausted from the amount of work the teachers were piling on the students. Percy's reply had not come either.

Hedwig didn't return until the end of the Easter holidays. Percy's letter was enclosed in a package of Easter eggs that Molly Weasley had sent.

Harry's, Rubi's, Fred and George's and Ron's were the size of dragon eggs and full of homemade toffee. Hermione's, however, was smaller than a chicken egg. Her face fell when she saw it.

"Your mum doesn't read Witch Weekly, by any chance, does she, Ron?" she asked quietly.

"Yeah," said Ron, whose mouth was full of toffee. "Gets it for the recipes."

Hermione looked sadly at her tiny egg.

Fred and Rubi exchanged a glance before the girl squeezed Hermione's shoulder comfortingly. The bushy haired shot her a tiny smile of gratitude.

"Don't you want to see what Percy's written?" Harry asked hastily, before peering at Fred and George with uncertainty.

The twins got the hint and stood up, leaving the quartet. After all, if Fred and George could have their secrets, so could their brother and his friends.

Percy's letter was short and irritated.

As I am constantly telling the Daily Prophet, Mr. Crouch is taking a well-deserved break. He is sending in regular owls with instructions. No, I haven't actually seen him, but I think I can be trusted to know my own superior's handwriting. I have quite enough to do at the moment without trying to quash these ridiculous rumors. Please don't bother me again unless it's something important.

Happy Easter.

"Git." Rubi mumbled, while Ron shook his head in exasperation.

The start of the summer term would normally have meant that Rubi was training hard for the last Quidditch match of the season. This year, however, it was the third and final task in the Triwizard Tournament for which she needed to help Harry prepare for, but they still didn't know what Harry would have to do.

However they found out soon enough as one evening Harry was required to be down at where the Quidditch Pitch is. The champions had to get through a maze in the final task. A maze that would harbour mysterious dangers. That same evening, Harry mentioned running into Barty Crouch, who had seemed dazed but by the time Harry returned with Dumbledore, Crouch was long gone, leaving an unconscious Krum he had attacked from behind.

Fred and George had been on Ludo Bagman's tail, attempting to get their money back that he still owed them from the bet both parties had made regarding the outcome of the Quidditch World Cup.

Sirius and Fiona both had been informed about the Crouch incident. Both their letters first reprimanded Harry for being out so late at night, after all someone was clearly targeting him if Harry's name coming out of the goblet of fire wasn't proof enough. Then they both recommended what he could do to prepare for the final task and strictly told him to stay safe, Fiona practically begging him as the young Potter seemed to always attract trouble.

As the days passed on the weather got warmer and Rubi was fanning herself with her hands as she sat in the stifling hot classroom of Sybill Trelawney one afternoon. She watched Harry open the window slightly when the Professor wasn't looking, settling back into his chintz armchair as a soft breeze blew across his face.

"Lucky git." Rubi muttered to him, who only grinned at her with a mocking attitude. Rubi's orbs flitted to Trelawney who began to talk about Mars and its effects due to the planet's angle. Rubi placed her elbow on the table, cradling her chin in the palm of her hand as she let out a long yawn, the Professor's voice merely making her more sleepy as the girl's eyelids began to droop shut

Rubi felt herself sink into pitch darkness. Several minutes passed before she began to see something. There was little light as the scenery was at night but she could make out her surroundings now. The girl glanced around, gasping sharply as she realized with horror where she was standing. She was in a dark and overgrown graveyard; the black outline of a small church was visible beyond a large yew tree to her right. A hill rose above her to her left. Rubi could just make out the outline of a fine old house on the hillside.

Rubi took a few steps forward, looking around as she tried to figure out where this place may be. However a twig snapped and Rubi sharply turned around, raising her hands out in a protective stance.

She noticed a figure drawing nearer, walking steadily toward her between the graves. Rubi couldn't make out a face, but from the way it was walking and holding its arms, she could tell that it was carrying something. Whoever it was, he was short, and wearing a hooded cloak pulled up over his head to obscure his face. And- several paces nearer, the gap between them closing all the time- Rubi saw that the thing in the person's arms looked like a baby... or was it merely a bundle of robes?

Rubi inched forward, trying to see the figure's face. She walked closer and closer and-

"Harry!"

Rubi awoke startled, her chest heaving up and down at the voice. Her eyes roamed around the room as she attempted to slow down the pounding in her chest. Rubi with a start realized her cousin was on the ground, clutching his forehead as his face was scrunched up with pain, Ron bent down beside him, shaking Harry as the class watched on.

"Harry! Harry!"

Harry finally opened his eyes.

"You all right?" Ron said, his expression horrified.

"Of course he isn't!" said Professor Trelawney, looking thoroughly excited much to the annoyance of Rubi as she grit her teeth. "What was it, Potter? A premonition? An apparition? What did you see?"

"Nothing," Harry said.

He sat up, his body shaking.

"You were clutching your scar!" said Professor Trelawney. "You were rolling on the floor, clutching your scar! Come now, Potter, I have experience in these matters!"

Harry looked up at her.

"I need to go to the hospital wing, I think," he said. "Bad headache."

"My dear, you were undoubtedly stimulated by the extraordinary clairvoyant vibrations of my room!" said Professor Trelawney

"If you leave now, you may lose the opportunity to see further than you have ever-"

"I don't want to see anything except a headache cure," said Harry. He stood up. The class looked away. They all looked unnerved.

"See you later," Harry muttered to Ron and Rubi, and he picked up his bag and headed for the trapdoor, ignoring Professor Trelawney, who was wearing an expression of great frustration, as though she had just been denied a real treat.

As Rubi watched Harry disappear, she sank back into her armchair as she released a long breath, a hand resting over her thumping heart, her stomach twisting in nerves.

What is happening?

***

On a Saturday evening, Rubi, the twins and Lee, were all gathered by the fireplace, poring over the potential inventions Fred and George would have in their dream joke shop.

George had just joked about making Percy the test subject, causing them all to burst into laughter.

All except one.

Fred slowly quieted down, brown eyes peering at the girl beside him, who was staring blankly into the fireplace as she chewed on her bottom lip. Fred frowned, reached forth and untucked her lip, causing Rubi to snap out of her trance as she whipped her head to the boy beside her.

Fred offered a warm smile before standing up as he held his hand out to her. Rubi looked from his hand to his face quizzically, placing her hand in his when Fred nodded with encouragement. The two walked over to the boys' staircase.

"Oi! Where do you think you're going?"

The pair turned around to see George and Lee staring at them in confusion.

"Well?" The ginger haired demanded, cocking an eyebrow.

Rubi cocked her head to the side, gazing at Fred for an answer.

However, he didn't speak.

It was as if the pair of brothers spoke merely with their eyes because a moment later, George nodded with a solemn expression and returned to engage in a conversation with Lee.

Up in the dormitory, Fred had settled against the headboard, his arms wrapped around Rubi, who had her head placed against his chest, listening to the calming sound of his heartbeat.

"What's wrong, love?"

"Hmm?" Rubi said in question, tracing patterns on his chest with her finger.

Fred sighed, caressing her hair.

"You've been quiet lately. I just wanted to make sure you're alright, Rubi."

The metamorphmagus took in a shuddering breath.

"I just... I just had an unusual dream in Divination and when I woke, Harry was on the ground clutching his scar. The dream itself was weird, and with Harry's scar paining right after, it just startled me that's all."

Fred sighed in sympathy, rubbing comforting circles into Rubi's back.

"I'm always here for you, got that, love?"

Rubi gently nodded, which Fred felt against his chest and he softly placed a kiss on her hair, tightening his arms around the girl.

Although Rubi hadn't been completely truthful, being in Fred's embrace whilst knowing she would always have him to lean on, provided some relief and comfort to the young Black. She could deal with the dream incidents later, right now, she just wanted to absorb the calamity of the quiet atmosphere the two were absorbed in.
