The heir and the spare. Margaret Stuart has played the role of spare her whole life - the spare to Mary Queen of Scots.  While she never wanted to be the heir, her childhood was affected greatly by people trying to kill her sister.  And even kill her.  For most of their lives, Mary and Margaret were separated, for the sake of the crown.  If Mary should die, Margaret would be able to succeed her. It wasn't a very ideal way to grow up.

Bash has lived his life as the King's bastard.  He has been treated well and cared for, but never legitimized as the King's son. He's quite unsure where his place is in the world. But hopes that one day, he will find it.

When Mary and Margaret arrive in France for the nuptials of Mary and Francis, the King of France's legitimate son, plots and schemes are well underway. The Queen does not approve of Mary for her son's bride, having been told of great misfortune by Nostradamus, should the marriage take place. Instead, she plots to kill Mary and marry her son off to Margaret, where his future appears to be much brighter.

But Margaret gets wind of the scheme and with Bash's help, she is determined to save her sister's life.
