CHAPTER FOUR
Kim Hyunjae lead the group to the upper floor, searching for a place or even a room that the group could stay. As he reached the last step of the stairs, a growling zombie welcomed him as it was about to attack them.
Hyunjae kicks the male zombie away, “Hyunjae, Suhyeok wanted us to go to the science lab!” He heard Cheongsan talking behind him, together with the others.
“Then what the hell are you doing here? Go!”
The others was perplexed by his yelling, still they followed what Suhyeok and Hyunjae commended.
“Hey, Kim Hyunjae! There are more!”
Suhyeok climbs on the stairs to attack the zombie that is coming close to his sister’s lover as did Hyunjae kicks off the zombie that followed Suhyeok from below and the duo dashed upstairs to get to their friends.
Easy to say, but it was definitely difficult to execute.
The duo are inside the art classroom, trapped. They got into the room while the zombies were preoccupied by the noise from the speakers when Ms. Park gave a heartfelt speech.
Suhyeok hid behind an easel that is covered in a red cloth while Hyunjae were underneath of a teacher’s desk.
Peeping at Suhyeok’s situation, an undead is on the verge of finding Suhyeok’s hiding spot while the other one is crawling on the floor. Then, Hyunjae saw the other man in the room looking at him. The former mouthed to stay still and be quiet.
As the zombie started to walk backwards, Hyunjae gave the man an okay signal. Then, that is when Suhyeok pointed at the opened window, that is their way out.
Back to their friends.
Back to Suhyeon.
“You lead, go!”
Suhyeok strongly shook his head as his eyes dilated after he comprehends the words that came out of Hyunjae’s mouth.
Hyunjae wanted Suhyeok to leave him.
“Just do it, man!”
Hyunjae mouthed back, as Suhyeok grumpily agreed with his plan. Hyunjae turned his head away, peeking, if there ever was a zombie looking at their way. When no one was, he sprinted to where Suhyeok was.
However, Hyunjae stepped over an empty plastic bottle of water, receiving the attention of the zombies inside the room. Then he shoved Suhyeok to the window as Hyunjae fights of the zombies coming on their way.
Unfortunately, they lost a classmate, a friend, and also a member of their group.
I-sak, On-jo’s best friend is dead.
She was thrown out of the window after getting bit when they were barricading the hallway to get into the science lab earlier.
While Suhyeok and Hyunjae is nowhere to be found. The group are trapped in the science lab, carefully holding on to the tables and chairs they blocked at the broken glass that the zombies were trying to get into.
Suhyeon were pushing the table as the zombies do the opposite. And Namra was with her. A deafening silence between the two of them.
And it was awkward. Both of them is feeling uncomfortable yet wanted to start a conversation but doesn’t know how or when to start.
“Your brother helped me earlier.”
Astonished look were seen in Suhyeon’s face after Namra’s revelation. “What—what do you mean he helped you? I mean, how?” She asked, wanting more specific information.
“The last moments before all of this, we were together. I would have been dead earlier today if it wasn’t him pulling me away from the zombie that was going to attack me. I, uh, was too preoccupied with the book that I am reading and the earphones clogged in my ears.” Namra elaborated, an all too familiar smile appeared on her face.
Oh, shit, another one has swooned by my brother’s charm. Suhyeon thought.
“I owe it all to him.” Namra added, but still, Suhyeon did not even bother to open her mouth. Unsure what she is going to respond.
“Lee Suhyeon, I want to apologize for they way I treated you in the past. I know you wanted us to be friends back then but, I pushed you away. I thought you were just like the others.”
Suhyeon’s face expression softened, “No, no, you don’t need to. I was too pushy at that time, I was annoying and it is remarkably too immature for me. I keep on trying hard—too hard even. Looking back, I’d be pissed with me too if I were you, so I don’t really blame you. It’s just you were so cool in my eyes, you know? I just remembered myself looking up to you even if we were in the same class and level.” A smile appeared on her face as she reminisce about her younger self.
Suhyeon remembered when she first saw Namra. She was very fascinated by her, she was pretty, smart, and makes her mother proud. Something she was very envious of. As a shy little girl, it was a hard time for her to approach the smartest girl in class but she did anyways.
Suhyeon would sit on the chair next to Namra everyday. And when Namra arrived she would try to start a conversation. At most times, she failed. But that did not stop Suhyeon. She only has to gain her trust, that was on her mind. So, whenever Namra needs anything, of course the girl wouldn't tell her but being seatmates she was able to know. She would lend her a pencil, eraser, and almost everything in her bag.
For some reasons that she was unaware of, Namra did not accept any of it, not even once.
With every rejections, Suhyeon was a little bit discouraged but she still carried on.
Never in Namra’s school years had ever heard someone adored her. She had always assumed that everyone in their class had some hidden agenda against her, so she never believed anyone about befriending her. And that includes Suhyeon.
Namra never fell on that shy and innocent façade of Suhyeon’s.
Suhyeon was ignored. Namra was cold towards her, and it went on for years. When they both reached middle school, still, Suhyeon was still perseverance, but it wasn’t like how she was in grade school.
At first, her friends told her to give Namra a little more time, maybe she’ll give in. But as times goes by, their advices became the opposite. They have witnessed each and every rejections and it was upsetting them, obviously. Suhyeon has gone out of her comfort zone, but they were worried that she might push herself back in with every rejections she faced.
Especially Suhyeok. He was the most afraid out of the group since he is the sibling.
And in high school, Suhyeon has finally given up. She has finally listened to what her friends has told her. She still talks to Namra but it is strictly school related. At least, she knew to herself that she had tried her very best and still, nothing changed.
At some point, Namra find herself missing how coy Suhyeon was, but of course, she will not admit that.
Now, she wonders why did Suhyeok saved her from the zombies earlier after everything she has done to his younger sister.
“And I was extremely rude to you,”
“Well, I wouldn’t disagree with that.”
They both chuckle in response, “Me too. No, but, seriously, I thought you were one of those backstabbing bitch, claiming and boasting that you are one-of-the-boys kind of chic.” She muttered, regretful of how the way she treated Suhyeon.
“Eh, those boys are too damn lucky to have me on their clique, not the other way round.” Suhyeon playfully scoffs, while Namra agreed as she nodded her head, smile creeping on her face.
Wujin and Daesu shared a look after they heard what the two ladies were talking about.
“Hey, what did you say, Suhyeon?”
“Yeah, we heard that!”
“It’s not like I’m not telling the truth.” Suhyeon stated, smirking. Then receiving a few groans and agreements from her guy friends, then they laughs in unison.
Suhyeon will always be a younger sister for them, including Cheongsan, even if he still finds it weird sometimes. Especially when Suhyeon gets affectionate towards him. He’s used to it, but he is still getting weirded out.
He is not used to ladies getting affectionate towards him. His mother is an exemption, obviously.
“Your brother will be safe. And so will Hyunjae.” Namra uttered with full confidence, caressing Suhyeon's back as she releases a sigh.
She has seen how strong the two men are, mostly physically since she doesn’t know them yet personally. Not to mention they are smart too—not on her level kind of smart, but, still.
“So, friends?”
“It is about damn time,” Suhyeon responded, wearing a smirk on her face.
“Oh, remember that nickname? I will never forget about the nickname they associated with the two of us,” She rekindled. Besides, it was only linked to her because some wanted to see a reaction from Namra when someone associated her nickname to other people.
Namra nodded and the duo started talking about the non-existent rivalry that has been on everyone’s mind between the two of them. It is so pathetic for them to assume that these two wonderful ladies were competitive with each other just because they are not friends.
Suhyeon is frightened with the thought of having a lot of people surrounding her only because of her blood relationship with her brother.
Little did she know, her brother would be the reason why she has formed a new friendship with Namra.
Hyunjae threw the metal steel rack to the female zombie. Just as he was about to be devoured by a whole ‘nother zombie, Suhyeok pulled the collar or his friend, then Hyunjae to climb up to the window and left the room.
“Hey! You scared the shit out of me in there!”
Suhyeok screamed his lungs out as Hyunjae looks over the window, while they are standing at the ledge, very carefully. One wrong move, they will die. “It still did work, didn’t it? That’s what more important.” He muttered, as his eyes wandered around the campus. Almost everybody has turned.
“We’re going to die here, aren’t we?” Hyunjae grimaced, “Just don’t die on my watch. Suhyeon will be furious at me if you did.” He joked at the taller young man with him.
“Oh yeah? Then don’t die on my watch too or turn into one of the zombies either. She would kill me also.” Suhyeok asserted, his breathing sharpens a little. He just have to find a solid evidence that Suhyeon liked her best friend.
“And if the two of us dies?”
Hyunjae gulps, “Then I guess she will kill us both. I don’t know how to kill a dead person but she’ll figure it out, yeah?” He had never been open about talking about death.
If it comes, he will accept his fate. It’s not like Hyunjae could object and the grim reaper would spare him.
Suhyeok bobs his head, “Of course she will, my sister’s a genius.” He boasted. Unlike the twin’s parents, Suhyeok has never not been proud of what his younger sister has achieved.
Suhyeon wasn’t the type of person to get angry easily but if she did, she either lashes out on you or just ignore you to the point that you would question your whole existence. Hyunjae, Suhyeok and her close friends extremely preferred the former. But, the latter usually happens. A lot. A whole damn lot.
Suhyeok can vividly remember the day he forgotten that he was supposed to accompany his younger twin sister to a BTS concert. He didn’t run to any errands and such. To put it more simple, he literally had no reasons to forgot it. He just simply did. After that incident, Suhyeon did not talk to him for a whole month.
She would text him, or leave a note or two but never did she communicate with him verbally.
Imagine, you are so damn close to see those seven people who made you feel that you are loved, that you are not alone, and valid. But in just a blink of an eye, your dreams were shattered because of your brother forgot about the most important day of your life and went to an internet cafe and played a freaking online game tournament. You will be pissed too, or much even worse.
Joonyeong and Gyeongsu used to joke around that Suhyeon should have disown Suhyeok as her brother. It was a tempting idea for Suhyeon, but she loved her brother too much. That is why she ignored him for a month.
Hell, did she enjoyed that entire month of November 2019.
“Remember the BTS concert? Suhyeon was—”
Suhyeok stopped him from talking much more, “Can you just forget about that and don’t remind me about it. I almost shit my pants when Suhyeon raised her voice at me, even my father got scared at that time, can you imagine that? Suhyeon was so little back then but she was really scary—up until now.” He mentioned. Their father was scared as hell that day, “You know what, I think she is still holding grudges up until now.” He whispered, guilt still rushing through his veins. His sister saved up for that concert and he ruined it all.
“Well, I don’t blame her though. I’d do worse than what Suhyeon did to you, if I was in her shoes.” Hyunjae teases, receiving a daggering looks from Suhyeok.
“That’s fucking BTS, man, I don’t know what went on your mind and decided to ditch it.” Hyunjae continued. He was bitter about it because if it weren’t for his father asked him to accompany himself in a business seminar in Japan, it could be him enjoying the BTS concert with the girl he fancies.
“I did not ditch it. It just slipped out of my mind.”
“Yeah, whatever, your excuse is lame and stupid.”
Their silly banter was put on hold when the two young men heard the sound of broken glass from the upper floor, where the science lab is supposed to be. Later on, they saw someone hanging from a fire hose.
“Cheongsan?”
“Look down. Down, down, down.”
“Suhyeokie, I think he’s aware,” Hyunjae mumbled, which was ignored by Cheongsan and Suhyeok anyway.
The zombie continued growling as Cheongsan was trying to kick the undead’s hand off him. Suhyeok continued saying what Cheongsan should do to the zombie.
However, the zombie wouldn't budge, its hand still clasped on his foot.
“I’m going down.”
“On me?” Hyunjae looked at him, while Suhyeok was about to attack but he restrained himself knowing his friend was just messing around.
Hyunjae just laughed at the shocked expression on Suhyeok’s face.
Suhyeok mocks Hyunjae’s laugh before talking, “Hey, I’m going down.” He announced for Cheongsan to hear.
And going down, he did. Even if Cheongsan stopped him to do it, Suhyeok jumped to the hose, while the zombie is now off Cheongsan’s foot. Hyunjae lets out a chuckle at his friend's situation, Suhyeok is now hugging Cheongsan’s torso as if his life depends on it-it kind of is.
“So, that was what you were saying about going down.” Hyunjae teases his friends, while his brows automatically wiggles.
“Clean your dirty mind, crazy bastard.”
“Asshole,”
Hyunjae restraint himself from laughing too hard as he heard his friends cursing him numerous times in only a matter of sixty seconds.
