CHAPTER THREE

Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit.”

In just a few minutes, the cafeteria is now engulfed by screaming, shouting, and crying of several students. Other students are still in shock, and that includes Hyunjae and Suhyeon. As the glass began to crack down, Hyunjae stands from his seat and grabs Suhyeon’s wrists while the young lady was still in shock away from the entrance.

On her peripheral vision, she saw Cheongsan, staring, while students were bumping into him until his body crashes into a table then some other students knocked On-jo resulting in her being slammed to the ground.

After being ambushed by other zombies and successfully evading from them without being bit, with the help of other students: Cheongsan, Hyunjae, On-jo, and Suhyeon were able to escape from the chaos that is happening in the cafeteria and made their way back to their classroom.

Upon entering, Gyeongsu inquires them if they were alright while I-sak ran towards her best friend after they got into the room.

“How’s the campus? Are we dead or what?” Gyeongsu raises a question.

Hey, Gyeongsu, we’re still breathing like? Of course, we are still alive!” Hyunjae responded. “Can’t say the same for the others, though.” He whispered underneath his breath.

“Wujin, did you know where did Suhyeok go?” Suhyeon asks her friend, wondering where her brother went.

Gyeongsu, Joonyeong, I-sak, Nayeon, Jimin, Hyoryung, and Minji was also inside the room.

Wujin shook his head, “I’m sorry, Suhyeon, but I don’t know where Suhyeok went.” He stated, his arms fully tightening, preventing the door to open.

“I heard he’s playing basketball, after lunch?” On-jo stated, receiving an astounding look from Cheongsan.

“Oh,” Is the only reply that came out of her mouth, still in shock, asking herself how did On-jo knew about her brother’s whereabouts.

Then suddenly, a loud banging came from the other side of the door. It reveals Daesu with his face covered in white.

Turns out, he was sprayed by a fire extinguisher. While Suhyeon’s head turns automatically to On-jo, the latter only avoided her stares.

“What is happening?” Daesu asked, catching his breath.

Suhyeon, on her original seat, watched the others talking and wondering about what was happening on their campus. She gets up from her seat and stands next to the window, watching bunch of her schoolmates turning into zombies while the others are already one and some were running away from those who have already turned.

Then she looks away, after hearing muffled voices screaming all over the place. It was too much for her. Suhyeon wasn’t expecting for what she thought of earlier to actually happen.

Like, how did this happen? Who was the patient zero? Was is Hyeonju? Or maybe Haesu? The most important question, who in their right mind could make virus that would jeopardize the safety of their country–if not the whole world’s country?

Little did Suhyeon know, while she was lost in her thoughts, her brother was one of those people yelling, specifically calling out her name.

Cheongsan urged Wujin and Daesu to look outside, the two obeyed.

Bare-su? Hey, it’s Bare-su! Help him up!”

“Quick! Quick! Quick!”

Turns out, Suhyeok was with Namra, their class president. It was a shock for everyone but they pushed the topic aside to aid their friend.

After Suhyeok successfully climbed into the room by the window, Suhyeok calls Namra to climb using the folded ladder below before the incoming zombie can get into her.

She successfully did as she was quick enough to climb to the top, then Suhyeok pulled her into the room.

The moment Namra was out of Suhyeok’s arms, he crashes his body into the floor, panting. Out of breath and his fear piling up for his sister.

“Suhyeok?”

The older twin turns his head where the voice came from, it was his sister. He sat as Suhyeon ran into her brother’s arms. “Hey, didn’t I tell you to call me older brother?” He pokes fun at her, making Suhyeon groan in annoyance. He is now in solace, knowing his younger twin sister is safe and is now with him.

Suhyeok sends a glance towards Hyunjae, expressing his gratitude as Hyunjae only nodded his head, beaming.

Of course, just like Suhyeon, Suhyeok is not dense either. He realizes the feelings Hyunjae was trying to suppress towards his sister. He does not approve nor disapprove it, that is Suhyeon’s problem to think about.

As long as the younger twin is happy, the older twin will reciprocate.

“I am so glad that you are safe. I am sorry for worrying you.” Suhyeok spoke, pulling away as his hand strokes his fingers on his sister’s back.

“It’s that, isn’t it? Zombies?”

Her heart beats faster than normal, at the same moment Suhyeon nodded her head, verifying her brother’s question. The words that came out of her mouth while she was talking to Hyunjae after Hyeonju arrived and Ms. Park brought her to the infirmary, about the zombies are now happening. Suhyeon somehow found a reason to blame it to herself. Thinking that maybe she jinxed it. Or maybe, it is bound to happen.

As much as it sucks to watch people turning to zombies, she’d forcefully much prefer to believe the latter rather than blaming herself.

Suhyeon finds it intriguing whenever she watches a movie or a television series that is about a zombie apocalypse, and look where she, her brother, and her friends are right now. They are in the middle of a potential zombie apocalypse. And they cannot do anything about it.

No one can help them. Their teachers were infected too, so who’s to say their principal isn’t? Or someone with authority hasn’t turned into zombies yet. And judging by how the dispatcher reacted with what Cheongsan reported, he wasn’t buying it. That it was some kind of a prank.

Adults.

She does not have a clue if the virus has gone out of their school, or was it already spreading around Korea? Or maybe around the world? She just hopes her parents are safe.

Gyeongsu opens the backdoor to check the outside after the zombies in front of their room run to wherever the screaming girl was.

Suhyeok ran towards the man guarding the door, “What are you doing, moron? Close it.” He retorted.

Suhyeon sighed, her head bending on the table, opposite to Hyunjae’s face. Their lips were only a few inches away from each other. “So, judging how the zombies’ reaction after hearing a girl scream. Am I right to assume that they are attracted to noise?” Hyunjae muttered, staring at her mesmerising deep brown eyes.

“Yeah. Just like the zombies in a lot of fiction materials.” A weak smile showed on Suhyeon’s face. “Have you ever thought about your family?” She raises a question immediately.

“Yeah. But they are not in Korea right now, last time I heard they both are in Singapore. Doing God knows what.” Hyunjae snickered. His parents rarely communicated with him, not until he messaged them first. It is already the 21st century, yet his parents acts like they live in the ‘80s with horrible means of communication.

“Well, then try again! And tell them to hurry up!” They heard Nayeon screamed again.

“Gosh, this bitch is starting to get on my nerves,” Suhyeon complains, rolling her eyes, preventing herself to pick a fight with the other girl.

Fight was never Suhyeon’s thing. But for Nayeon, she would gladly take Suhyeok’s ability to fight just so she could give a good fight with the annoying lady.

Surprisingly, Jimin scolded the mean girl, stating the obvious that the zombies could come back if they heard her.

“Aren’t we going to help them?”

Hyunjae gazes at her worried face, “Yeah, we will.” He answered, “When they ask us to.” He coyly added, making Suhyeon lets out a burst of soft laughter. The frown on Suhyeon’s face gradually disappeared.

The duo has decided to stand up from their seats and watch over the window to look if there ever was rescuers are coming to get them. But then, just like earlier, all they can see is their schoolmates who turned into a zombie and a few students who were caught in the middle, with nowhere to go.

But now, it is much worse.

Suhyeon turned around after hearing Nayeon speak. Wanting to witness what she is about to say.

Nayeon walks closer to Namra’s seat, “Hey. Do something. Tell Ms. Park to come and help.” She said, giving commands to their president who she never really treats as one before the current incident.

The class president just looked at the girl with the pink sweater sternly.

“Do something!”

“Do what exactly?” Suhyeok chimed in.

Nayeon looks at the man who recently talked, “I don’t know. Anything!” Then back to Namra, “What have you done as class president?” She added.

“As if you treat her as one,” Suhyeon scoffed, resting her head on Hyunjae’s shoulder.

“Shut up, Suhyeon, you’re no help either! I wonder how you were voted as the vice president.” Nayeon whined.

Suhyeon gave her a dirty look, as she crosses her arms. “Well, it’s not my fault that you weren’t elected! I wonder how you weren’t nominated.” She playfully grinned. It is known to everyone in their class that Nayeon was expected to be elected as the class vice president.

It was expected for Namra since there were rumours about her mother donating a huge money to the school while Suhyeon was elected because she is just liked by everybody.

But, seriously, her male friends, including her brother nominated her just for fun. Obviously, Suhyeon will win. Half of the class is friends with her.

Or want to be friends with her.

Or better yet, they like Suhyeon more than Nayeon.

Yes, that’s more likely.

Nayeon did not bother to answer back with what Suhyeon said, hence she goes back to antagonising the class president to the point where Namra stood from her seat. Every action she does is kind of a big deal to almost everybody. The class president is known for being too quiet, so standing up for herself is least expected, because she has never done that.

There are one or two people defending her behind her back. Namra doesn’t know anything about that and it will most likely stay like as is.

“Teacher’s office? So you just want me to leave now?” Namra questioned, her eyes showing no emotion even if there is a tiny smile on her lips.

“Well, if you’re offering.”

“You told me to do something. Do you want me to leave?”

Nayeon was stunned to speak, never did she think that Namra would speak up. Suhyeon doesn’t know how their math works because, usually, being quiet equates to being weak.

“Stop it, you three. She’s only saying that because you’re the class president.” On-jo mediated through them as Wujin and Daesu supported On-jo’s claim.

Their mouths shut after Namra gave them a death glare.

“So stupid. Typical.”

“What’s typical?”

“Now that we are in this mess, I’m your class president?” The smile on Namra’s face faded after turning her attention to On-jo.

“We called the police, so I’m sure we’ll be fine soon.” Suhyeok jerked his head towards everyone in the room, trying to diffuse the tension.

Nayeon lets out a groan, “But no one is coming!”

Jimin rises from her seat to walk over Nayeon. “Enough already. We are all scared too!”

“That is why I’m telling them to call!”

“Why don’t you do it then?” Hyunjae broke his silence, making everyone turn their head in his direction. “You’ve been complaining and shit but you yourself are not doing anything.” He added, receiving a secret fist bump from Suhyeon, who’s standing next to him.

Nayeon only glared at him as if it would make anything better or worse. She will just hurt her eyebrows and put wrinkles on her forehead.

“Why don’t you do it, then?” Jimin reiterated Hyunjae’s question while Hyoryung was holding her arms, stopping Jimin to attack Nayeon.

“Ladies, ladies, can you just stop the whining?” Gyeongsu pleaded as he is getting tired of their small fight.

“Oh, so, now you’re butting in, shithead?”

Fucking hell,”

Suhyeon and Hyunjae whispered in unison. Being called shithead triggered Gyeongsu to left his position on the door, approaching where Nayeon stands.

“What? Did you just call me a shithead?” Gyeongsu snaps, his teeth were gritted. “Call me a shithead, you shithead?” His brows knit together.

Hyunjae swiftly walks towards his friend, to help Daesu and Joonyeong to restrain their friend. While Suhyeon stands closer to Cheongsan.

Hey! Could you lower your voices? There will be no point of fighting if we’re just going to die because of your loud ass voices!” Suhyeon warned them, still, Gyeongsu and Nayeon continued arguing and shouting while Suhyeok chimed in, telling them to stop.

“Someone, hold the door. I said hold the door!” Suhyeon heard Suhyeok, asking or demanding someone to guard the door.

While no one was guarding the back door, Suhyeon has expected someone to barge into their room. She was only waiting when that person is gonna come in. Unfortunately, someone did enter their room.

It was Coach Kang.

The man started instructing his students to block the doors, so it would prevent the zombies to enter.

I-sak stopped her movements after seeing something strange on their teacher’s arm and approaches her best friend, On-jo.

After hearing what I-sak has discovered, Suhyeon looks at Coach Kang’s arm right away.

A bite mark.

“Coach Kang.”

On-jo called out the teacher’s attention, but he just ignored her and told her to help with the blocking.

“You have a bite mark in your arm!” On-jo declared openly. Making everyone stop doing what they were doing to look at the older man’s arm.

Hyunjae turned around to look at the coach’s arm, and there was in fact a bite mark. It has a little bit of blood too. He walks toward Suhyeon and dragged her away from the bitten man.

Holy shit,” He cursed.

Everyone in the room is now even more scared. And Coach Kang denying his bite didn’t help. I-sak demanded the teacher to leave the room. But the teacher was too stubborn and too damn selfish not to listen to the protests of his students.

Hyunjae and Suhyeon just stood there behind I-sak and On-jo, readying themselves to a possible attack from the teacher after I-sak yelled at the man’s face and the same man did not take it lightly. But just before Coach Kang could attack the student, he turned away from them. And that was when I-sak hit her teacher with a bag on the back of his head.

You fucking bitch.” Coach Kang said to I-sak as he was approaching her. But before he could have I-sak on his grasps, he suddenly fell, surprising everyone in the room.

The students surround their teacher who is now lying on the ground as Hyunjae and Suhyeon were holding each other’s hands.

Hey, hey. He’s turning.”

“We should get him out of here now.”

Coach Kang’s bones were cracking. His eyes turned crimson red. And blood, dripping from his nose down to his mouth, then to his chin. Just like in a movie Suhyeon and Hyunjae enjoyed watching, his lower part of the body started to rise before the upper. And instead of talking, growling was the only thing that can come out of the teacher’s mouth.

And the zombified Coach Kang attacked Minji and pushed her to the ground. Daesu, like a knight in shining armour, helped Minji by lifting the zombie away from Minji. But unfortunately, it had already bitten Minji on her lips.

Shit.

Of all places their former teacher could bite his former student, he bit her on the lips.

After being thrown to the ground, it attacked Suhyeok and Wujin. Luckily, they quickly avoided the attack, but, the former becomes the zombified teacher’s first target.

Suhyeok landed a punch on the zombie’s face but it did not stop from growling and attempting to attack him. That is when Hyunjae came into the picture by smacking their former teacher into the ground, but just a second, it got up again. And Cheongsan cornered the zombified teacher by a table.

Hearing Cheongsan’s grunting, as he struggled, Gyeongsu helped him by pushing the table onto the wall with the zombie on its edge.

“I don’t want to die. Help me,” said Minji, as she was sobbing.

Suhyeon looks away from the scene and started pacing, her hands found their way to her hair. There is one post-zombie and one pre-zombie in their room. Her brother was so close to being bit. Her heart beats fast. She pities Minji, but she doesn’t know how she can help her. Unless they kill her before she could turn.

Although, she cannot do that. They all can’t. They are only high school students for fuck’s sake! They weren’t supposed to worry about killing off a friend who is going to be a flesh-eating zombie in just a matter of time. They were supposed to worry about their upcoming exams like how a high school student normally does.

Nayeon who was sitting in a corner since earlier rushes to the door and starts removing the desks and chairs they used to block the door to unblock it. So, when she saw Minji stand and walked closer to her, she kicked the poor girl to the ground out of her. Suhyeok helped Nayeon from pushing and pulling the desks away from the door as Daesu holds on to Minji after she turned.

“I’m so sorry, Minji.” Suhyeon muttered.

Hyunjae holds Suhyeon’s hand then left the room, along with the others. “We’re waiting for Suhyeok, don’t worry.” He stated.

“I know.” Suhyeon lets out a chuckle as they waited outside just beside the door.

A few moments later, Suhyeok walks out of the room and closes the door. After seeing his sister waiting for him, he held on to her free hand, and the three of them run together.

Ah, fuck it,”

Suhyeon heard her brother curse underneath his breath and ran towards the zombie that made Nayeon scream. Soon after, Suhyeon saw that his older brother had helped fight the zombies. She was stupid enough not to notice that Hyunjae has already let go of her hand to help her brother.

The two young men continued throwing kicks and punches at the zombies while their companion is just watching from a distance. Just before a man zombie could approach the group Suhyeok had a glance at him and threw it to the ground. As another zombie was about to attack Suhyeok, Hyunjae has already pushed it away.

Cheongsan, Joonyeong, and Gyeongsu took the sliding windows off its frames and uses it as a weapon to keep the zombies away as they helped Suhyeok and Hyunjae from being devoured by the undead.

Daesu left an impression on Suhyeon when he lifted the one side of the sliding door to use it as a shield from the zombies, while the other guys who are holding up a window went to the other side as a flock of zombies were heading on their way.

Suhyeon helped Daesu from pushing the door, as did the other ladies, down to the stairs. She pauses for a second then she took a step backwards while the others proceeded to push then tied her hair into a low ponytail.

While Suhyeon was being preoccupied, she notices how Nayeon isn’t helping the group to push the zombies away. She was just in the back and pretending she was helping while shouting and complaining at those people in front of her.

Hey, Lee Nayeon! Shut your fucking loud mouth and start pushing! You screaming out your lungs would only get us in more trouble!” Suhyeon gives an order to her, but instead of doing what she said, Nayeon just rolled her eyes and continued what she was doing earlier.

Suhyeon’s jaw clenched, then she took a deep breath and grabbed Nayeon’s right wrist with her right hand.

“Get off me!”

“You wanted me to act like a vice president, right? Now, do what I fucking said.” Nayeon looked at Suhyeon wickedly as she struggled to let her wrist go from Suhyeon’s grasps.

Hey, you two, what the hell are you doing? Fucking help us here!”

Suhyeon looks over at Wujin after hearing him yell. Then, she removed her hold on Nayeon’s as she flashes her sweetest smile and went back to help her friends to push the zombies off to the staircase.

Nayeon rubbed her reddened wrist as her evil glance follows Suhyeon. Later on, she followed Suhyeon’s words, truthfully, she was afraid that the quiet young lady would do something worse to her. She couldn't have imagined that Suhyeok’s introverted younger sister was so deadly.

Knowing Suhyeok had a past hanging out with bullies Nayeon thought that he was the wicked one out of the set of twins, but now, gradually, her opinion started to shift.

Maybe Suhyeon was the wicked one, she wasn’t entire sure. Surely, Suhyeon’s climbing the top of her list of people she abhor in this place they called school.
