CHAPTER ONE:
THE MCCALL PACK
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Elena Calavera fiddles one of her daggers between her fingers as she waits patiently for her father to bring in the two American teenagers who supposedly want to talk to them, "Do we have any ideas on who these kids are?" Elena asks, mainly towards the leader of the group her grandmother, Araya Calavera.
Araya turns to face her, "I'm assuming it is Scott McCall and his pack, but the alpha should know better than to enter a hunter's home."
"Wait, why does that name sound familiar?" Elena's brother, Marcos, asks as he joins in on their conversation.
Elena swallows hard before looking down at her feet, "He was Allison's boyfriend." She answers. Marcos looks towards his sister with sorrow in his eyes as he gives her a comforting smile. The two had been best friends for what felt like forever. Allison was like a sister to her, so when Elena overheard that she had died, she was heartbroken and determined to make her proud.
Breaking the silence in the room were the doors as they flung open to reveal her father with the two American teenagers behind him. Elena examines them thoroughly, one boy and one girl. The girl had beautiful strawberry blonde hair pinned up into a braided crown. She wore a jean jacket with a dark blue undershirt and a floral skirt. The boy, on the other hand, had his hair spiked up while wearing a black denim jacket and a red undershirt with black pants to match.
Snapping Elena out of her thoughts was her brother as he sat down beside her, "Is it just me, or is he really hot?" Marcos whispers, causing Elena to laugh in which caught everyone's attention.
Taking the attention away from the Calavera girl, Araya speaks up, "Severo hates this music. Me? I've always loved the music of youth. This kind, especially. It has a savage energy."
"We're here for Derek Hale." The strawberry blonde replies, getting straight to the point.
"Is that so?" Araya questions, as she looks towards her granddaughter, making sure she was paying attention since she would someday have to take over the family business since her older sister was no longer here.
"We know you have him." The girl starts, "We've heard you can be bought." She finishes in which makes her partner in crime finally chime in and start to place money out onto the table.
"It's 50,000 for Derek."
"Now, where does a teenage boy get money like this? Japanese mafia?" As if on cue, everyone cocks their guns while Elena throws her dagger at a target behind the teenager's heads, hitting the middle perfectly. "Not smart to come alone." Araya finishes, with a proud smile on her face from her granddaughter's performance.
"What makes you think we came alone?" The boy shot back, causing Araya's smile to slowly fade away, and also making Elena grow a deep dreadful ache in her stomach.
"You brought a wolf into my home?" The irritated hunter questions as the anger boils inside her, on the edge about to explode.
"We brought an Alpha." As soon as those four words left his mouth, Araya sent them all, except Elena, to go find Scott McCall.
As Marcos was about to leave, Elena grabs his hand, "Please be careful."
Marcos softly smiles towards his sister, "You can't get rid of me that easily." And with that, her brother was off.
Elena completely zoned out as she tries to push back all her negative thoughts of what could happen to her brother just like what had happened to Allison. It felt like hell to live without Allison, she couldn't lose her brother too.
Pulling Elena back into reality was her grandmother's voice, "Grief and loss, Mija. I wonder why, when you and your friends have suffered so much loss, you would risk it again for someone like Derek Hale."
"Cause we don't like to lose." The boy spoke up again, causing Elena to make eye contact with the strawberry blonde. Elena's gaze fell from resentment to realization as she finally realizes who she was, Lydia Martin. She remembered all the times Allison had talked about her, saying she was the light of her life in Beacon Hills. Elena could've sworn by the way Allison talked about her it was like she was secretly in love.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
"Front door clear."
"South clear."
"North?" Elena asked through the radio, checking in on the status of their intruders.
But to her surprise, it wasn't the North guard who answered. Instead, an unknown voice, who Elena assumed was their leader, also known as Scott McCall, responds to her, "Stiles. Take 10 off the table." Elena's head turns slowly in which she looks towards Stiles, tears brimming in her eyes as she realizes this was the kid who was possessed by the Japanese fox. The kid who had taken her best friend's life. Stiles looks at her with confusion, making Elena quickly look down as she notices her clenched fist which she didn't even know she was holding.
"Maybe you should just take the deal." The strawberry blonde advises them as Elena looks up from her wrist and over to her grandmother.
"While I'm keen to follow the warning of a Banshee, I'm going to have to decline," Araya responds as she leans onto the table.
"Aaaa ... Come on. Just give us Derek. You don't want him anyway. Haven't you noticed what a downer he is? No sense of humor, poor conversationalist. Just come on, take the money." Stiles tells them, causing Elena to scoff at his smart remarks.
Araya looks over to her granddaughter and picks up the radio, "Elena? Severo? Show them how the Calaveras negotiate."
Elena slightly smirks, finally being able to get some action, she picks up her daggers, stuffing them all over her body, except one, and walks past the two teenagers who had a look of worry all over their faces as she casually twirls the dagger in between her fingers.
She cautiously walked out of the room and walked through the halls as wolfsbane filled them in which made Elena's sight begin to blur. Blindly guiding her way, she stopped at a corner as she heard coughing. She clenched her fist tightly and launched herself at the stranger, her hand coming in contact with their face.
"Son of a bitch!" The unknown subject yelled as they grabbed their nose before the blood could get onto their clothes.
As the smoke cleared out Elena finally made out who the stranger was, "Marcos! What the hell are you doing?"
"What am I doing? You're the one who punched me. I thought you didn't want me to get hurt." The Calavera boy remarks as he threw his right hand in the air while his left held his nose.
"Sorry about that." She apologized. "How was my form?" Elena asked as she shook her wrist, trying not to smile.
"Terrible." Marcos bluntly replied, causing Elena to left out a slight laugh.
She pulled out a cloth from her jacket and handed it to her brother, "Come on, let's go clean you up."
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
As Elena gently scrubbed the blood off of her brother's face, the lights kept flickering on and off, "What do you think they're doing to them?" Her brother asked.
"Something they deserve." She answered harshly with an unfazed expression on her face.
Marcos stopped his sister from cleaning the dried-up blood below his nose, "You can't blame them for what happened to Allison. It wasn't their fault." With no response from his sister, Marcos continued, "Sometimes the universe has a plan for all of us, and it must have had a plan for Allison, even if we don't understand it."
Elena took a deep breath knowing he was right, "I miss her."
Before Marcos responded he immediately wrapped his arms tightly around his sister, "I know, but we'll see her again someday."
Interrupting their heartfelt sibling moment was their father who stood in the door frame, "Your grandmother wants you both downstairs.
The two siblings pulled apart and followed behind him who led them outside to be faced with Scott McCall and his infamous pack.
"So, you're just letting us go?" Scott asked timidly.
"I sent four men out to where Kate was rumored to have been seen. None of them came back. Let's see if you and my granddaughter can do better." Araya replied causing Elena to look towards the alpha standing in front of her.
Scott worriedly smiled at the young Calavera girl, "You could have just told me she was alive."
"You wouldn't have believed her." Elena jumped in as she remembered when her grandmother had told her that Allison's sociopathic aunt came back from the dead.
The older Calavera looked at the teenage boy standing in front of her and said, "Now I know what kind of Alpha you are. And where your next step lies."
Scott furrowed his brows, "What next step?"
"When you take the bite of an innocent when you make a wolf of your own? When you do that, then I will cross your border and come knocking at your door." She threatened as she walked away from the alpha and back towards her granddaughter. "You bring the she-wolf back here. Dead or alive, I don't care. Do you understand me?" She told her causing Elena to nod.
As Elena was about to make her way back to her newfound 'friends' her brother grabbed her arm, "Remember our talk from earlier alright? I don't wanna hear that you killed their whole pack even though we both know you could."
Elena laughed at her brother's joke and made her way towards the McCall Pack, "So, what now?" Stiles asked.
"She thinks she knows where we can find Derek." The alpha answered.
"Is she gonna tell us where?" A girl who Elena hadn't recognized questioned back.
"Uh, actually, she's giving us a guide." The alpha told them, remembering his conversation with the older hunter. As he finished his sentence, a motorcycle rolled upright in front of the group. The person controlling it quickly comes to a halt as she takes off her helmet to reveal a beautiful dark skin girl with an obvious werewolf scar across her neck, Braeden.
"You know her?" Stiles urged the suspiciously new member.
Elena rolled her eyes at the boy's lame attempt to make her feel uncomfortable, "Braeden." She mocked back.
"Who's Braeden?" The unknown blonde asked looking at her friends around her.
"She's a mercenary," Lydia informed her and everyone else who didn't know.
"Right now, I'm the only one who's gonna take you to La Iglesia." Braeden confidently told them.
"The Church?" Lydia questioned causing Elena to slightly smile at her intelligence in Spanish.
"What's The Church?" Stiles queried with a puzzled look on his face making the huntress want to punch him right in the face.
Braeden took a deep breath before responding, "It's not a place you'll find God."
The hunter squished uncomfortably into the backseat with the three other girls while they followed the mercenary as she led them to their destination. Silence filled the car until the blonde girl, who Elena learned to be named Malia leaned over to the two boys in the front, "Okay, I'll ask. Who's Kate Argent?"
"Uh, I'd like to know, too." The other girl named Kira stated while raising her hand.
"Well, we were at her funeral," Stiles said as he turned to Scott, "So I'd like to know how she got out of a casket that was buried six feet underground."
"She was never in it," Scott responded, causing Elena to grow a nervous pit in her stomach.
Lydia sighed not wanting to continue this conversation, "She was Allison's aunt."
"And a total sociopath," Elena adds, jumping into their conversation and making all eyes fall on her.
Kira turned her head to look at the McCall boy, "You don't have to talk about it now if you don't want to."
"Um, yes, he does." Malia urged as she gave them a look to continue.
Scott sighed and nodded, "Yeah, she's right. You guys should know. You need to know."
"Alright, Kate was the one who set the fire that killed most of Derek's family," Stiles said taking the attention away from his best friend.
"Some of them survived, like Cora and Peter," Scott said, staring into the road ahead of him.
"A very angry Peter," Lydia added.
"Yeah, he's the one who bit and turned me," Scott told them, making a weird feeling form in the pit of Elena's stomach, empathy.
"And the one who finally caught up to Kate and killed her." The strawberry banshee commented.
"Yeah, and we saw her buried," Stiles recalled.
"No, we saw a casket, remember? She wasn't in it." Scott said as he looked to the hunter who sat quietly in the back, "The Calaveras heard that Kate had been killed by an Alpha's claws. They wanted to make sure she was dead."
"But her body was healing, more and more, as she got closer to the full moon." Elena explained as she looks to the alpha who was putting the whole story together, "She was coming back."
"So, you switched the bodies," Scott stated making everyone turn their heads to the young Calavera girl.
"If a Hunter is bit, they have to take their own life before they change. Us Calaveras treat the Code like law. We make it our responsibility to enforce it." Elena declared to the teens in front of her who looked at her like she had three heads.
"Well good for her! I wouldn't do it, either." Malia related.
"Would you kill a half-dozen people to get out?" Elena argued, remembering her people Kate had brutally murdered some of her family-friends.
"Because that's what she did," Scott interjected.
"So, Kate's a Werewolf now?" Kira questioned, changing the subject as she notices Elena shift uncomfortably.
"I don't know. You know, there's a saying, sometimes the shape you take reflects the person you are." Scott replied with.
"What kind of shape is sociopathic bitch?" Lydia asked, causing Elena smile at her remark.
Out of nowhere, Elena feels the jeep jolt forward making Stiles slam down onto the breaks, pulling over to the side. "I thought you knew how to drive," Elena said while rubbing the back of her neck as she got out of the car.
Stiles rolled his eyes at her comment, and he got out of the car along with everyone else to check it out as Braeden made her way over to them.
"What happened?" She asked looking around at the pack.
Stiles huffed in frustration, scanning every part of his jeep, "I don't know. It felt like we hit something."
"Scott, we need to get there by night. It's too dangerous otherwise." The mercenary explained causing Scott to look over at his best friend.
"Go," Stiles told him, pointing his hand towards Braeden.
"Not without you," The McCall boy responded.
"Dude, someone needs to find Derek. We'll figure something out. We always do. Just go." Stiles urged.
Everyone's eyes fell on the alpha as he sighed, "Okay," He responded while making his way over to Braeden.
"Well this should be fun," Elena joked as she walked over to Stiles who was struggling to open the hood of his jeep. She rolled her eyes at the boys' attempt, pushing him to the side as she does it with no care in the world.
Stiles looked at the hunter with annoyance in his eyes as he stuttered out, "I- I have a bad shoulder."
Elena laughed at the boys' lame excuse, "Whatever helps you sleep at night."
He then started to look all over his jeep trying to figure what caused them to stop, "Stiles," Malia said as she reached her hand into an area of his jeep, "I don't think we hit something," She told him as she pulled out what looks to be a gigantic shard of a tusk, "I think something hit us," She finished as she held up the tusk.
"Maybe we should just walk," The banshee told the brunette-headed boy as he worked on the jeep.
"Hey, I will never abandon this jeep." He replied as he pointed at her with a tool in his hand, "You understand me? Ever. Ever. Ever," He told her as he made his way back to fixing his jeep.
Elena noticed Malia walking forward as Kira followed shortly behind her, "Work faster, Stiles," Malia said causing Elena to walk forward to the kitsune and were coyote, "There's something out here with us," She finished.
This made Elena grab her daggers from her boots, twirling them in her hands, impressing the four teenagers around her, "Then let's make sure we're ready."
Malia smiled at the hunters' statement, "I like her."
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Kira grabbed her katana from the back of the jeep while Stiles and Lydia tried working on his jeep, "Lydia, could you please hold the light still for a second? It's really hard to see anything if you keep shaking it like that," Stiles said as Kira made her way back to the front where Malia and Elena stood.
The strawberry blonde scoffed as she replied, "I'm shaking it like this because we're in the middle of nowhere with your broken down jeep and we're being attacked by yet another razor-clawed monster. And I'm terrified."
"Well, just be slightly less terrified. And hold this," Stiles told the shaking girl as he handed her a piece of his jeep.
"What's this?" She questioned while looking it over.
"I don't know. I'm hoping it's not important," He said her making Elena let out a small laugh while Lydia rolled her eyes.
"Anything?" Kira asked, taking the attention off of the two who were bickering.
"It's too hard to see," Elena answered as she tried her best to see what was out there.
"We should've brought another flashlight," Malia added.
Kira began to grow an idea, she walked to the jeep headlights and held her katana over it to make the lights shine brighter, "Did you see that?"
Elena looked harder into the distance as she saw something move, "What the hell?" She questioned as Malia ran towards the creature, "Malia!" Elena shouted as she started chasing after the blonde.
"Guys, wait!" Kira called out.
Elena turned around for a second, "Screw it." She mumbled and ran after Malia. She panted and pulled her hair up into a messy ponytail, "Did you find anything?" She asked in between breaths.
"Nothing," Malia answered and was about to continue until she saw a large figure running towards them, swinging at whatever it could hit in its reach, "Elena look out!" Malia pushed her to the ground as the figure made a gash in her stomach.
Elena stood up from the ground and put Malia's arm over her shoulder, "Come on let's go find Kira before that thing kills one of us."
Shortly after they found Kira who had almost sliced them open with her katana, "It's us! It's us, it's us," Elena told her.
Kira put down her katana and immediately took notice of the bleeding were coyote, "What happened? What's out there?"
"I don't know, but it is big and fast," Elena stated while Kira put Malia's other arm over her shoulder.
"And it cuts deep," Malia finished as the girls heard the jeep's engine.
"Finally," Elena sighed as they carried Malia back towards the others.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
"You, you please don't do that ever again!" Stiles shouted to the bleeding girl in the passenger seat, the group back on the road.
"Do what?" Malia asked, genuinely confused about what she did wrong.
"I- I thought you just took off. I thought you were running." Stiles stuttered out, not explaining the problem well.
"I was running." She stated bluntly.
"No, I mean, like, I thought you were leaving," He told her as he looked from the road over to her to see her reaction.
"I wouldn't leave without you," The were coyote answers back.
Stiles looks at the girl, "Really?"
"I would never leave without you," Malia replies, causing Elena to slightly smile at how much the two cared for each other, "Them I would leave," She adds.
"Yeah. Uh, it's progress," Stiles defends as he looks back to the three girls in the back.
"That doesn't look good," Lydia says, glancing at Malia's open wound.
Malia looks down towards the open gash on her stomach, "It's okay."
"Are you sure?" Kira questions.
"It looks deep," Elena adds, noticing the intense wound on the blonde.
Malia took a deep breath before responding, "I can feel it healing."
"You didn't see anything?" The banshee asks, trying to get an image of what they had just encountered.
"Barely. It had a strong scent, though." Malia told her, making Elena look at the were coyote in front of her.
"Like what?" Stiles questions.
Malia looks out the window before answering, "Like death."
The group continues driving, silence filling the car as Elena keeps her eye on Malia's wound, amazement washing over her when she notices it start to heal. Finally, reaching there destination, they roll up to an old abandoned church, hopping out to see Scott and Braeden, carrying out a young teenager.
"Is that him? Is that Derek?" The were coyote asks glancing over towards Stiles.
"Uh, sort of," He responds as the young boy looks up.
"Great, time-traveling is now a thing. What's next, evil doctors who take away your soul?" She jokes, throwing her hands up in the air, bringing up her past nightmares to joke around with the pack.
