𝟎𝟎𝟗. fire meets gasoline

CHAPTER NINE:
FIRE MEETS GASOLINE
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

Scott McCall leads Elena into Derek Hale's loft, telling her about the incident Jordan Parrish had just gone through. The brunette spots the deputy alongside Derek and Lydia as they both inspect his hands, "He covered you in gasoline?" The Hale questions, allowing him to put his arms down once he was finished.

Lydia glances toward the older werewolf, "It's the hair and nails, isn't it? The parts of the body that are essentially dead." She states with confidence, looking from Parrish to Derek as she talks.

"Well, they should be gone," He replies, making eye contact with the banshee.

Parrish quirks a brow, "I was set on fire. All of me should be gone." He comments, causing Elena to nod in agreement like she was saying fair point.

"Not if you're like us," The alpha tells him as the Calavera girl's eyebrows raise while looking towards Scott.

The deputy glances back at the McCall boy with confusion on his face, "Like you?"

"I don't think he's like us," Derek answers, shaking his head from left to right while eyeing Parrish up and down.

Lydia looks at Parrish with curiosity in her eyes and a slight smile on her face, "Then what is he?" The huntress shrugs, unaware of how many other supernatural beings there were other than werewolves, banshees, were coyotes, and kitsunes.

"Sorry, but I have no idea," The Hale adds.

Scott steps forward before stating the facts to the older werewolf, "But you knew about Jackson and Kira."

"This is a little out of my experience," Derek replies while shaking his head. "There might be something in the bestiary. Did you try Argent?"

The alpha shrugs sheepishly, "I don't know where he is." He admits this causes Elena to turn her head in his direction with a look of confusion. However, the alpha chooses to ignore her since Parrish was the main priority.

"Okay, hold on. What's a bestiary?" The Deputy questions before shaking his head, "Actually, that's not even my first question. Just... Just tell me one thing. Are all of you like Lydia?" He pauses, looking at each of them, "Are you all psychic?"

The huntress bites her lip, holding in a laugh as Scott and Lydia share a look while the Hale questions Parrish's question, "Psychic?"

"Yeah," He confidently answers.

The alpha shakes his head, "Not exactly."

Parrish quirks a brow while glancing back at Scott, "Okay. Then what are you?" The Deputy stands in awe as the McCall boy opens his eyes, revealing an unfamiliar color of glowing red.

As Parrish was about to continue speaking, Elena's phone goes off, causing all eyes to fall on her as she reaches into her back pocket to see who was calling. Her eyes scan over the name, causing her to excuse herself from the group to take the call. "Hey Marcos, how's Stiles's dad doing?" She questions, remembering how he had left for the hospital to comfort the human after his father got shot while she went to the loft to figure out why Parrish is not a pile of ashes.

"They're talking with the doctor right now about the procedure for tomorrow," He replies while standing outside of the Stilinski's hospital's room, his eyes watching as an anxious Stiles bites his bottom lip while the doctor speaks.

The huntress lets out a sigh of relief, "That's good."

"Yeah," He starts, making the two fall into a comfortable silence before he continues. "Any luck on figuring out what Deputy Hothead is?"

Elena laughs at the nickname her brother had given him, "Not a single clue, but my guess is he's gonna have a hell of a time figuring it out."

"Yeah, listen I called to let you know that I'll swing by the loft as soon as I'm done here," He tells her, causing his sister to nod.

"Alright, see you soon," She tells him, hanging up her phone and making her way to the pack.

Once she arrives back in the living room, Jordan looks at Scott with furrowed brows, "What's a Kanima?" He asks, causing the huntress to look over at the alpha with some knowledge of the creature he had just asked about.

The McCall boy raises a brow, "We'll get back to that. Just know that everyone like us, everyone with some kind of supernatural ability is on the dead pool."

Parrish slowly shakes his head from left to right as his brows begin to furrow, "But I don't even know what I am."

"I'm pretty sure they don't care," Derek replies, earning a nod from the huntress who was thinking the same thing.

The deputy looks toward the older werewolf with a hint of fear in his eyes, "How many professional assassins are we talking about?"

"We're starting to lose count," Lydia answers while moving closer to the huntress which causes her to smile softly at the banshee's actions.

Elena crosses her arms, moving her sight towards the alpha, "But is it still just professionals?"

Parrish begins to shake his head, "I don't think Haigh's ever tried anything like this. I think he was taking a chance."

"That means anyone with the dead pool could take a chance," Derek bluntly announces, making goosebumps grow onto the brunettes arms.

The deputy looks over towards Scott with worry in his eyes, "But if Haigh had it, then who else does? How easy is it to get this thing now?"

"That is the million dollar question," Elena mutters, mainly towards herself as she wonders about how the group can find some way to stop it once and for all.

Snapping everyone's attention away from the huntress was Derek's alarm, blaring throughout the entire room which made everyone's eyes fall to the front. After the Hale manages to shut it off, the door slides open, revealing Elena's brother whose face was completely red, "Sorry." He whispers, before awkwardly walking over to stand next to his sister.

"You know how to make an entrance," She says while leaning into his side, desperately trying not to let a laugh escape from her lips.

Marcos crosses his arms with a hint of annoyance in his voice, "Shut up."

Once everyone was finally comfortable, Lydia began explaining everything she and Stiles had discovered earlier that day, "Meredith was only at my grandmother's lakehouse once, but I think once was enough."

Derek looks down at the strawberry blonde, "How did your grandmother know her?"

"She didn't. She found her," She answers after sitting on the Hale's bed next to Elena. "Because of another woman named Maddy. The woman she loved." The strawberry blonde slowly stands, handing the alpha a picture of her grandmother, Lorraine, and the woman she spoke of. "I never met her, but I saw her name everywhere. She used to be part of a yacht racing team. There were plaques and trophies in the lake house from all the regattas she'd won."

"How did she die?" The deputy asks, catching the twins' attention.

The banshee takes a deep breath before softly speaking, "How's not the story. It's what happened right before. My grandmother, Lorraine, used to work in San Francisco for IBM." Lydia turns away from Jordan and calmly walks over to the windows in the back. "She was there on a weekend, catching up on work. She started hearing this sound, like rain. But when she looked out the windows, all she saw was blue sky."

"But she kept hearing the rain?" Scott questions while slightly tilting his head to the side.

"And it just kept getting louder. Rain and thunder cracking like gunshots in her head," Lydia explains, walking over towards Scott, "So loud. She finally just screamed."

"Like a Banshee," Derek comments, causing chills to run down Elena's spine.

The Martin girl nods before continuing, "She called Maddy who was planning on taking one of the boats out on the lake. But Maddy said that the sun was shining there too, so Lorraine didn't say anything."

Parrish furrows his brows, "There was an accident?" He says as if he remembers hearing this story before which causes the huntress to swallow a lump in the back of her throat.

"It took them four days to find Maddy's body. And then it took decades to figure out how Lorraine knew," Lydia began as all eyes were still on her. "She started with parapsychologists, like the Ph.D. in their name made it more scientific. They built the study in the lake house according to every pseudoscientific theory they could find.

Elena shakes her head, "But none of it worked."

The banshee nods, "So then she started going to more extreme occult. Things like mediums and psychics All of them were failures. Until she found Meredith. They found her in Eichen House. This fragile girl who didn't understand the things she heard. They brought her to the study. And they almost killed her. She was hospitalized for over a year. She never really recovered. My grandmother drove her insane I drove her to suicide. And all she ever wanted to do was help." The Calavera's frown, the two of them feeling empathy for both of the Martin banshee's.

After Lydia's speech, the pack gathers around one of Derek's table while the strawberry blonde places a piece of paper down, "My grandmother created the code for the dead pool. They think she's the Banshee who put the names out in the first place." Elena glances down to look at the note, inspecting over the different letters and numbers. The Calavera girl picks her head back up as Lydia speaks again, "She left me this message in the same code."

"But she didn't leave a cipher key, did she?" The alpha asks which causes the Martin girl to slowly shake her head from left to right, causing the pack to look amongst each other, knowing they all had a lot of work cut out for them to stop this from killing anybody else.

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

Elena waves off her brother as she makes her way towards her next class with a certain werewolf running through her mind. It had been a few days since the incident at the school, and Brett still wasn't returning any of her calls or messages. Deep down, the huntress knew it was for the best, but it still didn't hurt any less. Even if she had just met him, he made her feel a sort of comfort she hadn't felt with anyone else, almost like he made her feel safe in a world full of disaster.

Snapping the Calavera girl out of her thoughts was a body colliding into her. Her eyes scan over the person she had run into, recognizing him almost immediately, "Liam?" The boy jumps slightly as he looks around the crowded halls in fear, causing Elena to grow concern towards his actions, "Are you alright?"

"Y-yeah, I- I'm fine," He stutters, not making eye contact with the brunette as he tries walking past her. Elena gently grabs ahold of the Dunbar boy, pulling him back by his arm to face her since she didn't believe that was the truth.

Before she could say or ask anything else, Mason Hewitt enthusiastically calls out to the both of them, "Hey, Liam, Elena! Am I gonna see you guys at the bonfire tonight?"

The huntress nods while the Dunbar boy keeps his head down as he answers the question, "I'm thinking about skipping it."

"You're not skipping," His best friend protest while shaking his head from left to right.

Liam finally picks his back up and makes eye contact with the human, "Why not?"

"Because you're on the lacrosse team. Don't you have to go?" Mason tells him, furrowing his brows at his friends unusualness.

"I don't, uh-," He begins, however, something else must've caught his attention since his gaze was lingering down the hallway with nothing but fear in his eyes. Elena notices his odd behavior and looks over to see what he was looking at, though she spots nothing, "I don't think I can make it."

"You're coming! And we're gonna find you a nice girl that you can embarrass yourself in front of and find me a lacrosse player. Because statistically speaking, someone on your team has gotta be on my team. All right?" The Hewitt boys states, earning a small laugh from the huntress.

"Liam?" Elena questions, noticing how his eyes were still focusing down the hallway.

The Dunbar boy moves his attention back to his friends while nodding, "Okay. I'll be there." He answers before turning around and abruptly walks away.

"What's up with him?" Mason asks towards the huntress while the both of them watch as he disappears into the crowd of students.

The Calavera girl shakes her head slowly, her eyes remaining on where the beta was just standing, "I'm not sure."

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

Elena scans over a magazine while laying flat on her stomach, flipping through the pages as she patiently waits for a certain were coyote to finish getting ready, "Have you talked to Stiles?" She asks, causing Malia to stick her head out from the bathroom.

"Have you talked to Brett?" Malia restates, making the brunette give a look of saying fair point. A smirk appears on the blonde's face as she moves back into the bathroom, "Maybe you'll see him tonight." She adds, sounding like she was aware of something that the huntress wasn't.

The Calavera slowly shakes her head with a sad smile, "I doubt it."

The were coyote notices the girl's sudden mood change which causes her to walk out from the bathroom and towards her closet to look for something to wear to the bonfire, "Okay, enough talking about the boys. What else is going on?"

Once those words left Malia's mouth, the huntress began to remember her unusual conversation with the Dunbar boy earlier that day, "Have you noticed how strange Liam's been acting?" She ask, causing the blonde to furrow her brows.

"No, not really," The were coyote says honestly before adding, "But Scott did mention something about the deadpool changing last night."

"What did it change?" The Calavera girl questions back, her eyes looking intensely at the dirty blonde in front of her.

Malia sighs, "It took Derek off and made Liam worth eighteen million instead of three." The blonde could tell the news was upsetting the brunette due to her furrowed eyebrows, but before she got a chance to say anything else, Elena's phone beeps.

The huntress runs a hand through her hair, reading over the text, "It's Liam and Mason, they're here." The werecoyote nods and quickly grabs her things.

Once she gets to the door, she turns back to see the brunette in the same spot, "You coming?"

"I'll be there in a second," She replies, causing Malia to nod and exit the apartment. Elena gets off from her place on the bed and walks over to her desk to grab her army green jacket. She slips it on as she slowly scans over the picture sitting up.

A black picture frame catches her attention and a sigh escapes her mouth once she realizes which picture it was. The brunette slowly picks it up and sits back down on the bed, "I wish you were here, Allison." A tear slowly fell down Elena's cheek which she immediately wiped away. She set the picture back on the desk and hurriedly exited the apartment towards her brother and Malia.

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

The huntress tilts Malia's flask up towards her mouth, pouring some of the remaining vodka down her throat. Her nose scrunches up in disgust from the horrific taste and burning, though it quickly goes away due to the familiarity of the certain beverage since she was practically raised in a club back home in Mexico.

After dancing for quite sometime, a familiar voice spoke out to the two girls, "Hey. What are you guys doing here?" Scott questions, a smile appearing on his face.

"Getting drunk," Malia bluntly answers, holding up her flask as Elena stops dancing to focus her attention on the conversation.

"What are you doing?" The huntress questions back with a small smile on her face.

Scott looks over to the other brunette before continuing, "Trying to make sure no one gets hurt."

The Tate girl keeps on dancing while nodding her head, "That sounds fun too."

Scott's smile slowly fades away as a look of realization falls onto his face, "I don't want to ruin your night or anything, but we kind of can't get drunk."

"What?" The were coyote questions, her dancing slowing down as she furrows her eyebrows.

The McCall boy shrugs, "I think it has something to do with our healing. But, trust me, I've tried. You're not gonna feel anything."

"Maybe you should tell him that," The blonde states pointing over towards Liam as he begins chugging what looks to be like yet another beer.

As Elena glances over towards the freshman, she notices a familiar person standing farther behind her. The blonde follows the huntress's gaze, seeing none other than, Brett Talbot. Without saying anything to her friends, the brunette begins to move forward, trying to avoid any collisions with her classmates, "What are you doing here?" She asks once she reaches him, the few sips from earlier quickly wearing off.

"Can we talk?" Brett asks, causing the huntress to slowly nod her head and follow him to a secluded and quiet area in the school. The two stood in an awkward silence before the werewolf finally spoke up, "You looked like you were having fun."

A small smile slowly appears on Elena's face, "Yeah, with everything going on I felt like we could all use a night to still be teenagers." Brett smirks proudly at the brunette's statement with the look of pure admiration in his eyes.

The huntress is the first one to break eye contact as she smiles down to her feet, running a hand through her hair, but before she can say anything Brett speaks out, "You're probably wondering why I am here," He says, making the huntress nod for him to continue, "I just wanted you to know that I was an idiot for walking away without talking to you."

"What took you so long to realize?" Elena jokes, causing a laugh to escape from both of there lips.

The werewolf sighs, "It wasn't easy at first because all I could think about was the fact you lied to me. But when I was talking with my sister, Lori, she made me remember that even when you knew what I was, you didn't show any disgust or hatred towards me and it's not fair for me to do the same."

The huntress begins to shake her head from left to right with furrowed eyebrows, "How'd you know I was here?" She asks since the two hadn't spoken in a while.

"Malia. She called me earlier today basically threatening me to show up," He tells her as a laugh escapes from both of their mouths. However, the huntress stops laughing when she notices Brett's mood change. His eyebrows begin to furrow as he looks like he's listening to some conversation. Before Elena could ask what's wrong, he quickly grabs ahold of her and pulls her against him with his back against the lockers while his right hand gently rests onto her mouth.

Instead of making any noise, the brunette simply listens, "It's gasoline. Haigh says we gotta burn you." A unfamiliar voice speaks, but the huntress quickly remembers the deputy's name, the one who tried killing Jordan Parrish.

As the two were hiding, Brett began to feel dizzy which shortly lead him to accidentally slam his head against the lockers, his eyes shutting while his back slowly slides down. Elena quickly turns around to face him, placing one of her hands onto the back of head and the other lightly hitting his cheek, "Brett?" The girl whispers, trying to not gain anymore attention then they probably have.

Just as that though crossed her mind a security guard stood behind them, "We got two more over here!" He shouts out, causing two more men to walk towards them. One harshly grabs the huntress by her arm, pulling her away from the weaken werewolf as the other two guards pick him up by his arms.

Once they reached where everyone else was, they threw Brett down onto the floor next and began pouring gasoline on him just like Scott, Liam, and Malia. However, during this the McCall boy was still somewhat awake and noticed what was happening as he saw one of the security guards held the brunette tightly in his grasp.

He desperately tried getting up to help, but he was knocked back down as the guard who kicked him leaned towards him with an evil grin and a lighter flashing in his face. Elena stands there with fear on her face, any hope she had left was now coming crashing down. As the huntress took a deep breath, Scott's eyes opened with those all to familiar red orbs.

The McCall boy reaches out and twist the guards hand that was holding the lighter, causing him to let out a loud groan. Elena stomps on the man who was holding her foot, and elbows him directly in the face as Braeden and Derek come out of nowhere, the three of them taking the rest down with no help whatsoever from any supernatural being.

After the short fight, Scott and the others sit up on there knee's, looking thankful at the three in front of them for saving them, "What happened to the gun?" The McCall boy asks the Hale.

"You're covered in gasoline," He replies in a duh sort of tone.

The true alpha nods, "Oh yeah." He states as Derek helps him up while Elena makes her way towards the other three.

The brunette quickly hugs Liam and Malia before  tightly wrapping her arms around the Talbot boy's neck, his eyes going wide at the girl's actions but once he realizes what was happening he returns it by wrapping his arms around her waist as the two were still sitting.

Scott's phone dings, causing the werewolf and the huntress to pull apart and look at him as he reads over the message, "What's going on?" Derek questions while the McCall boy's eyes light up with a hint of hope.

"We know who the benefactor is."
