CHAPTER SEVENTEEN:
THE DREAD DOCTORS
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Elena follows the banshee and the werecoyote into school as Lydia held up a book that Malia had found in Tracy Stewart's bedroom yesterday. "The Dread Doctors by T.R McCammon," The strawberry blonde reads, handing the huntress the book which had the three men in all metal on the cover.
"So that's what they are called," Elena mumbles, staring down at the book before giving it back to the banshee. Lydia takes it, staring down at the cover before cocking her head to the side. "What?" The huntress questions, noticing the Martin girl's sudden face change.
Lydia shakes her head, "I don't know. There's something about it. Has anyone actually read it yet?" She questions, looking back at her friends as they continue to walk down the school's hallway.
"Just me, and I didn't understand any of it," Malia informs the two, causing Elena to laugh slightly at her response.
"We should probably all read it," The strawberry blonde tells the two, leading them to her locker, so she can grab her books for her next class.
Malia nods, "Kira's working on that." The three girls finally make it to the banshee's locker, Elena leans her back against the locker next to them while the werecoyote stands beside her. "Stiles says he can't find anything on the author. He thinks it's a pen name," The Tate girl adds, earning a nod from her friends in agreement with the Stilinski boy.
The huntress looks down at the book, flipping it over to see the summary on the back,"In a small New England town, teenagers are taken in the night and buried alive. Days later they emerge transformed, wreaking havoc and spreading terror commanded by an ancient order of parascientist known only as the Dread Doctors."
"Sounds vaguely familiar," Lydia mumbles after hearing the Calavera girl read the description.
The banshee turns her head to look at the werecoyote, "How does it end?"
"It doesn't," Malia answers, shrugging her shoulders as she spoke. "This is supposed to be volume one," She tells them, earning an eye roll from the Calavera girl.
"Oh, let me guess, there is no volume two?" Elena says, her tone filled with annoyance that the author didn't continue the story.
Malia steps forward, her eyes looking between her two friends before speaking, "I think we're living volume two."
"Then maybe the real question is, is this a novel or someone's prediction?" Lydia mumbles, making an uneasy feeling appear in Elena's stomach.
Scott grabs Elena to talk to Theo with him / type
Just as the girls fell into a comfortable silence, the McCall boy rushes over, his attention on the huntress, "Can you come talk to Theo with me?" He asks, causing the two other girls look at one another knowingly while Elena furrows her eyebrows.
"Why me?" She questions back, making eye contact with the alpha as she spoke.
Scott looks between Lydia and Malia before responding to the Calavera girl, "I thought you guys were getting closer." He tells her, noticing how the Raeken boy and Calavera girl had been hanging out and talking during and after school.
Elena shrugs, "I mean, I guess. I don't know, we've only hung out a couple times." She informs them, causing the alpha to nod in response.
"Well, that's more than any of us," He mumbles, pointing at himself as the two other girls nod in agreement. "Come on, he's waiting for us in the locker room," He says, grabbing her hand and pulling her towards their destination.
As soon as the two enter the room, they are met with Theo who was leaning against a locker. A smile appears on the Raeken boy's lips as he notices the huntress walking in alongside the alpha. Scott hands him one of the paper copies of the Dread Doctors book, "Have you ever heard of them?" He asks while Theo flips and skims through the pages.
Theo slowly shakes his head, "Sorry, but I'd never even heard of the Kanima until a few days ago. You want me to read this?"
"Well, not yet. I'm still only on chapter one," Scott tells him, making Elena speak up after him.
"And I haven't even started," She adds, shrugging her shoulders as she spoke. The words cause Theo to pick up his head and look at the Calavera girl, the two hold eye contact for a moment, and Elena felt as though she had seen them before. Scott notices the interaction between the two teenagers, but chooses to stay quiet amongst the group.
Theo finally looks back towards the alpha, making a breath escape from the huntress's lips, one that she didn't even know she was holding, "You guys do this a lot, huh?
"Do what?" Scott asks, unsure of what the Raeken boy meant when he said that.
Theo motions to the pages he was holding, looking the McCall boy in the eyes, "Get involved."
Scott takes a deep breath which Elena can tell means he's thinking about Allison, probably thinking back to when all they had to worry about was werewolf hunters and Peter. "Yeah, I guess," He mumbles, glancing at the Calavera girl who offers him a small smile, telling him he was doing the right thing.
The Raeken boy shakes his head, an idea popping into his head as he looks back at Elena, "What about the author? If he knew all about these guys, shouldn't we be talking to him?"
"We thought about that, but it's pretty much a dead end," The huntress answers, earning a nod from Theo as he looks back down towards the paper.
He begins flipping through the pages, but comes to a stop which catches Elena's attention, "What about this guy?" Theo questions, showing the two the name Dr. Gabriel Valack on the acknowledgements page. "Do you know him?" The Raeken boy asks, making the Calavera girl look to the alpha who had a look of realization on his face.
"Yeah, and I know where to find him," The McCall boy answers as the bell rings, signaling that class was about to start. Scott quickly puts on his backpack, looking at the huntress while he does so, "We're gonna pay him a visit tonight." He informs the Calavera girl who nods in response.
Just as Elena was about to follow after the alpha, a hand pulls her back. She slowly looks down, seeing the Raeken boy's hand holding hers. He laughs before letting go, "Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you, I just wanted to say be careful going to Eichen House."
A small smile appears on the girl's lips, "Thanks." She mumbles, moving to exit the room. However, she stops in her tracks, turning around to look ay the Raeken boy before adding, "You know, Stiles is so obsessed with the idea that you're a horrible person, but he's wrong about you, we all are." She softly tells him, earning a faint smile from the boy.
The moment those words left Elena's mouth, she notices a sudden change in Theo's demeanor, almost as if he was caught off guard by the Calavera girl's statement. It almost looks as if he feels guilty.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Lydia presses the intercom to Eichen House, leaning into it as she shouts, "Hello, anyone there?" She says while Kira stands to her left and the twins, Scott, and Stiles stand behind them. The huntress's phone buzzes in her pocket, making her reach for it to read the name of a certain werewolf texting her.
A sigh escapes from the girl's lips which catches her brother's attention, "Brett?" Elena nods, reading the messages that were popping up on her lock screen of her and her siblings.
Brett 🐺
Can we please talk about last night?
Brett 🐺
If you don't respond, I'm going to go to your house to make sure you're alive
Brett 🐺
Please Elena
"You can't ignore him forever," Marcos tells her, reading the messages from her phone which immediately makes the girl stuff the phone back into her pocket.
The two haven't spoken since last night due to the incident involving Lucas and the Dread Doctors. Elena never found out who the girl Brett was dancing with is, and quite frankly she didn't want to know anymore. Because after thinking long and hard about it, she didn't want to acknowledge her existence.
Snapping the twins out of their conversation is Scott, "Are you going to be okay in there?" The alpha questions, turning back around to face his best friend and looking directly at him.
"Yeah, why?" The Stilinski boy questions, a hint of annoyance lacing in his voice.
Scott shakes his head, "You just seem a little off." He mentions, making Elena furrow her eyebrows since she didn't noticing anything wrong with the human boy.
"I think we're all a little off," Stiles says, looking down at the ground as he spoke.
The McCall boy nods before glancing behind him and towards his girlfriend, "Maybe some of us more than others." He mumbles, making Elena look at her brother, begging him to keep quiet about the girl's recent behavior. After witnessing Lucas and Tracy's deaths, Elena has been having the same nightmares she used to have when she was younger.
However, this time they affected her even when she was awake. Her normal and calm demeanor has changed to being tense and antsy. Her hands being incredibly shaky when holding a weapon, or even when she's writing her notes for school. The girl's different, and it all started when the Dread Doctors came to Beacon Hills.
"Wait, what happened?" Stiles asks, snapping the Calavera girl out of her thoughts and back into the conversation.
Scott takes a deep breath before replying, "When the other Chimera, Lucas, when he came after us, I heard Kira say something in Japanese."
Marcos shrugs, joining in on the conversation with the two friends, "That doesn't sound too bad."
"She doesn't know any Japanese," Scott tells them, causing Elena to glance over the alpha's shoulder and towards the kitsune.
"Still not terrible," Stiles adds, gaining the Calavera girl's attention and making her look back at the alpha.
Scott sighs, "I also think I might have stopped her from killing Lucas." He tells them honestly, contemplating on what to do about the situation he was currently in with the Yukimura girl.
"Okay, but wasn't he trying to kill you though? I mean, that just sounds like self-defense," Stiles asks, earning a nod from the twins in agreement with the Stilinski boy's statement.
The alpha steps closer, not wanting Kira to over hear, "It was more than that. I mean, she nearly took off his head."
"Maybe she had no choice," Stiles begins before taking a deep breath, "There's gotta be a point where self-defense is justified. Tracy killed her own father, and Lucas would've killed you." He finishes, making Elena slightly wince as she thinks back to both Lucas and Tracy being killed right in front of her.
"They're not the bad guys. They're the victims. We shouldn't be killing the people we're supposed to save," Scott tells him, making Elena look at the ground, understanding both sides. However, before the Stilinski boy can say anything, the gate buzzes before opening
"Let's get this over with," Marcos mumbles, following after Scott as he leads the group inside. The group looks back at the same time after they hear the gates close behind them, "Well, that's just great." He announces, earning eye rolls from some and laughs from others.
As soon as the pack enters the building, they are met with a older man wearing gray scrubs, standing behind a wooden desk, he places a clear container down onto it, "Please empty your pockets into the container."
"We're here to see-." Scott begins but is quickly cut off by the guard.
"Please empty your pockets into the container," He repeats, causing the alpha to glance at the pack. Stiles gives his best friend a nod, signaling to do what they are told. Elena pulls out her phone and keys to place into the container as everyone does the same with their belongings. "Please remove your belt and place it into the container," He says, specifically towards the kitsune as he looks her in the eyes.
"I kind of need the belt. I mean, it's crucial to the outfit," Kira tells him, looking down at her accessory before back at the guard.
The man sighs, "Please remove your belt which patients will attempt to take from you and use to strangle either themselves or others." He sternly says, making the Yukimura girl nod in response.
"Right, got it," She mumbles, quickly taking the belt off and placing it into the container. Elena watches the kitsune before feeling a pair of eyes on her. She lifts her head to see the guard creepily stare her up and down.
The gate to there left loudly slams shut, catching the pack's attention and causing them to turn their heads to see who was there. An older man stood with a long white coat and a badge clipped onto his pocket. The group follows the man down a flight of stairs, Elena and Marcos occasionally sharing looks as they walk. "I'll remind you that I'm only doing this as a favor to Deaton, and I'm doing it against my better judgment." The older man tells them, leading them to Valack's room.
"Hey, what's the etiquette for talking to this guy? I mean, do you ever look at the other eye?" Stiles questions, using his hands to motion where Valack's third eye is.
The older man slowly shakes his head, "I wouldn't. In fact, while you're down here try not to make eye contact with anyone or anything." He sternly instructs, stopping and looking back at the teenagers for a moment before continuing their journey.
The group makes it to the end of the hall where another locked door awaits, Elena, Marcos, Stiles, and Lydia pause, turning around to see Scott and Kira stopping. The both of them trying to step forward, but quickly realizing there was a barrier. "You didn't think you were all going, did you?" The man questions, raising a brow as he looks at the alpha and kitsune.
"It's mountain ash, isn't it?" Scott asks, making the man nod before responding.
"Everywhere, but heavily concentrated down here," He tells the McCall boy, sliding his keycard once he was done speaking. "Valack's cell is the last one at the end of the hall," He informs the four, causing Lydia to turn around once more.
Scott offers the banshee a small smile, "We'll be right here." He reassures her, making the huntress take the Martin girl's hand in her's. Lydia looks at the Calavera girl, smiling at the brunette before the both of them walk through the door, Stiles and Marcos following quickly behind them.
The four teenagers slowly make their way to the end of the hall, inspecting each room they came across before finally making it to Valack's. He slowly lifts his head, looking between the group before speaking, "Tell me what you just saw."
"Me?" Stiles questions, pointing at himself and glancing at the rest of his friends before he looks back towards Valack.
"The creature in the previous cell. The Sluagh. The myth is that they can take on the appearance of the lost souls that have become inextricably bound to it. Happen to see any lost souls, Mr.Stilinski?" Valack asks, causing all eyes to fall on the human boy.
Stiles inhales sharply before replying, "Everyone down here."
"Don't give up on us yet. We're all works in progress," Valack tells him, causing the banshee to raise an eyebrow as the twins look at one another.
"Where did you hear that from?" Lydia asks, remembering Peter Hale saying those exact same words.
A soft chuckle escapes from Valack's lips, "Wise words from a former cellmate." He answers, standing up and moving closer towards the glass that separates him from the teenagers. "Did you bring the book?" He questions, making everyone look towards the huntress. Elena shows Valack the book, making him smile slightly. "Very nice, first edition. Of course, there was only one printed."
"There is no T.R McCammon, is there?" The Calavera girl asks, making Valack smile at the girl's cleverness as he shook his head.
"No," He tells her, making Lydia speak up this time, understanding what was going on.
"You wrote the book," The banshee adds, causing the boy's eyes to widen, finally comprehending what was happening.
Valack nods, staring at both teenage girls, "That's right Lydia and Elena. Maybe you've already guessed that it's not just a book."
"What is it?" The huntress questions, wanting to know what these men from her nightmares were doing and how to stop them from killing anyone else.
Valack smiles at the Calavera girl, liking her sense of curiosity, "A tool, designed to open your eyes."
"To what?" Stiles questions, making Valack snap his attention towards the Stilinski boy.
"To them," Valack pauses, his voice lacing with intensity as his eyes scan the group before continuing, "The Dread Doctors."
Lydia steps closer to the glass, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion before she asks, "Why did you use a pseudonym?"
"I had a professional reputation once. I wasn't interested in ruining it by putting my name on a second-rate piece of trash," Valack explains, making the two boy's raise an eyebrow.
"Then why write the book in the first place?" Marcos asks, causing Valack to roll his eyes as he looks at the Calavera boy.
"You haven't even read it yet, have you? I wrote it because no one believed me. Because no one listened," He says, instantly making Elena's stomach become uneasy as she remembers when her father and grandmother didn't believe her."They're here, aren't they? In Beacon Hills?" Valack questions, snapping the huntress back into the conversation.
The Calavera girl steps forward to stand next to the strawberry blonde, her eyes looking directly at Valack before asking, "What are they?"
"Not entirely human. At least, not anymore. They were scientists once. Scientists who worshipped the supernatural. Tesla said, 'If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.' They found their secrets in electromagnetic forces. Ways to prolong their lives, give them power, and most importantly, making you forget you ever saw them." He explains, creating an even worse feeling in her stomach as images of the Dread Doctors play in her mind.
"What do they want?" Elena asks, growing impatient and just wanting to know how they can defeat them.
A smile appears on Valack's face, "Good question, Elena. Everybody wants something, don't they?"
Stiles notices the tone in Valack's voice, he raises an eyebrow, "Okay, so what do you want?"
Valack holds up a tape recorder before putting it into the box, "Hit record." He instructs, looking directly at the banshee as he spoke.
"What do you want me to say?" Lydia asks while Stiles and Marcos stood protectively behind her.
Valack chuckles softly, "I don't want you to say anything. I want you to scream." He tells her, causing all eyes to fall on the Martin girl.
Lydia takes the recorder out of the box, holding it in her hands until Stiles snatches it right out, "No way. Not happening. Sorry." He says towards Valack, making the banshee step away from the glass, so they could all talk in private.
"He's the only one that knows anything," The strawberry blonde whispers, earning an eye roll from Stiles and a nod from the twins who understand Lydia's point.
The Stilinski boy shrugs, "The guy is a nut-job who drilled a hole into his head. He's probably lying his ass off."
However, before anyone can say anything else Valack speaks up, causing all four of them to turn back around to face him, "How many have died so far? All of them teenagers, am I right? Want to know how many died the first time they came here? I wonder how many will die if they succeed." He tells them as the lights of Eichen House begin to flicker on and off.
"What the hell," Elena mumbles, glancing up at the ceiling lights.
Gaining the Calavera girl's attention is the banshee who was starting to put the pieces together, "This did happen before."
"And now they're back. All because of a few teenagers who never even considered the consequences decided to reignite a supernatural force they barely understand," Valack shouts, looking between Stiles and Lydia while he spoke.
"The Nemeton," The Martin girl mumbles, bringing up past memories for the Stilinski boy and her.
Stiles steps forward, standing next to the strawberry blonde, "How do you even know about that?"
"I know because I saw it," Valack answers, removing his bandage from his forehead to reveal the spot he had drilled in his head. Elena winces at the sight quickly looking away after seeing an eye open in his head. Valack looks around the hallway, noticing the lights flickering on and off the same way they did a few minutes ago. "Who did you come with?"
"Our friends," Elena answers, unsure of what he was trying to get at.
"What are they?" Valack questions, making Stiles step next to the huntress.
"Don't answer," He whispers as the lights turn completely off for a minute before turning back on.
Valack sighs, "You bought a Kitsune." He announces, the same time one of the ceiling lights explodes, making Elena and Marcos grab a hold of one another while Stiles and Lydia do the same.
"What's happening?" The huntress asks, confused on why the lights were flickering on and off.
"She's disrupting the building's defenses," Valack answers, making the four teenagers furrow their eyebrows.
Marcos shakes his head before asking, "What do you mean? How?"
Valack takes a deep breath, "It's not just the mountain ash that keeps this building secure. It's the electromagnetic energy. Eichen is built on the convergence of Telluric currents, ley lines. It's what allows it to keep certain supernatural creatures in and certain others out. They knew you were coming. They're here, and you unlocked the door for them." He tells them, causing Elena's eyes to widen in fear and shock.
She grabs ahold of Lydia and Marcos, pulling them away from Valack, "We need to go." She tells them, earning nods from everyone.
The four teenagers were about to leave until Valack pounded on the glass, "We had a deal! Hit record, do it now. It costs you nothing." He shouts, directing his words towards the banshe.
"But it's worth something to you, so you're not getting it for free," Stiles says, stepping closer towards the glass as everyone slowly walks back to their spot. Elena growing anxious as everyone second passes.
Valack looks at the Stilinski boy, annoyance in his stare as Lydia spoke up, "What does the book do?"
Valack stays quiet, not answering the Martin girl's question, "Tell us!" Marcos shouts, wanting to get the answer so they can get the hell out of there.
"I told you. It opens your eyes," Valack explains, rolling his eyes before he spoke.
"How?" Elena asks, wanting to know if she would be able to figure out whether or not her nightmares were just nightmares.
Valack slams his hands down onto the glass door, getting irritated with the teenagers, "It triggers the memory centers of the brain, clearing the fog and bringing the images of the Dread Doctors into focus. I wrote the book in an effort to find out if anyone else like me had ever seen them before. I thought I could circulate it, an effort to trigger someone, anyone else's memory. They'd see the cover, a hint of memory. They pick up the book, read it. The suppressed memory surface, and they'd find their way to me to discover more. Just like you did." He explains, noticing Elena's odd behavior as he did.
Truth be told while Valack was explaining the process, images of the Dread Doctors began to flash in the huntress's mind, especially the ones from her nightmares.
"Did it work with anyone else?" Marcos questions, stepping forward and looking Valack in the eyes.
Valack chuckles softly, "You didn't see it on The New York Times Best Seller list, did you?"
"So all we have to do is read the book?" Elena asks, making sure this was all she needed to get the answer she so desperately desired.
"If you've seen them, if they've done something to you then the book will help you remember," Valack tells the Calavera girl, looking her in the eyes with a look on his face like he knows something. But before Elena can ask about it, he turns his attention to the banshee, "Now give me what I want."
Lydia glances at the Stilinski boy, holding her hand out for the recorder. He rolls his eyes before unwillingly giving in. After the banshee did what he wanted, she quickly put it in the drawer to give it back to Valack, "Tell us what they want."
An alarm begins to blare throughout Eichen, making Marcos tug on the strawberry blonde, "Lydia, I think we need to seriously get out of here."
The Martin girl shakes her head, her main focus on trying to get more answers from Valack, "What are they trying to do?"
"Read the book. Anyone who's come into contact with them," Valack urges, making the group nod their head and look at each other as the alarm grew louder.
"Lydia, we got to go now," Stiles says, the four of them rushing off and down the hallway to try and get out of there before the Dread Doctors found them.
As they were running off, Valack desperately shouts after them, one last attempt to make it known at what they needed to do in order to stop them, "Read the book!"
The twins lead the group, coming across an empty room in which they immediately decide to hide in, "Hurry, in here." Elena tells them, making everyone lean their backs up against a wall as they hear the mechanical sounds from the Dread Doctors.
The group stood there for a moment, waiting for the right time to finally leave. Once the lights of Eichen House came back on, Lydia begins to speak up, "I think we're okay, Stiles?" She asks, noticing the boy's sudden mood change.
"No, it's not okay. All of this, it's on us. Everything that's happened, everything that's gonna happen. It's our fault," He tells the banshee, making the twins look at one another before looking back at their friends.
The first time Elena had met Stiles, she held a grudge for him killing Allison. However, as time went on, she got to know the truth about her dear friend's death, and how at the time, the Stilinski boy wasn't himself. From there on out, Elena knew Stiles was a good person. She knew that everything he did was because he had to.
Elena steps forward, putting a hand on the human boy's arm in an attempt to comfort him, "No, it's our responsibility." She corrects, letting him know that she doesn't blame him for anything that has happened. "Now, let's get the hell out of here." She tells them, earning a few laughs and smiles from the three other teenagers.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
As soon as the Calavera's made it back home, they were met with a certain werewolf who stood at their front door. "What are you doing here?" Elena asks, making the Talbot boy pick up his head and look at the Calavera girl, his eyes softening as he stares at her.
"You never answered my text," He tells her, walking closer towards the girl which causes Marcos to shift awkwardly as he takes the apartment keys from his sister.
He uses it on the front door, opening it and turning back around to face the two teenagers, "I'll leave you two be." He announces before shutting the door and leaving the two alone.
The two fall into an awkward silence, neither of them knowing what to say or do. The huntress finally decides to speak up, "How long have you been waiting here?"
Brett shrugs his shoulders, "About an hour. I didn't see your car, so I thought I could catch you before you went inside." He answers, earning a slight laugh from the Calavera girl. She found it oddly sweet that he waited that long just to speak with her. "I'm sorry about last night," He apologizes, looking at the huntress as he spoke.
"You don't have to apologize," She begins, shaking her head from left to right. "I didn't have any right to ask about her when you and I are just friends."
The Talbot boy slowly shakes his head before stepping closer to the Calavera girl, "Don't do that."
"Don't do what?" She asks, lifting her head to make eye contact with the werewolf. Her heartbeat rising as he inches closer towards her.
"Don't pretend like nothing is going on between us," He says, taking the girl's hands in his which causes Elena to look down at their hands. "We aren't just friends, Elena. And you know that."
A feeling begins to cloud the huntress's mind, fear. Deep down, the Calavera girl was always scared of letting people all the way in. She didn't know how, so when they got too close, she would just push them away. It was the only trait she inherited from her mother, and now she was doing it to Brett. Elena takes her hands back from the werewolf and steps back, "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Are you serious?" The Talbot boy questions, his eyebrows furrowing as a hint of anger lingers in his voice.
The huntress shakes her head, "I don't know what you want me to say, okay?" She tells him, making the boy scoff at her response.
"Tell me we weren't just friends. Tell me that I didn't make any of this up in my head. Tell me that you have feelings for me, Elena." He shouts, his vulnerability showing in his face as he makes eye contact with the huntress.
Elena's eyes soften before looking away from the werewolf and towards the ground, "It's just too complicated, okay? You and I, we're from two different worlds, this would never work." She tells him, pointing between the two of them as she spoke.
Brett's lips fall into a thin line, rolling his eyes at the girls statement. A whole bunch of responses appeared in the Talbot boy's heads. Things like that's not true or I don't care about that sort of thing. But the only thing he was able to mumble out was a simple, "Yeah." The two fall in yet another awkward silence, the tension between them defining, "Well, I guess I'll let you go to sleep." He tells her, earning a nod from the huntress. "I'll see you tomorrow," He finishes, offering the Calavera girl a small smile before leaving.
Elena runs a hand through her hair, frustration and annoyance fuming through her body. Of course the huntress had feelings for the werewolf, why else would she have been upset at him dancing with another girl. But she couldn't go against her fears and tell him that, instead, she had decided to let him go.
