CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO:
FIGHT TILL THE END
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
After the incident with the Beast and the Dread Doctors, Elena had gotten a text from Brett, telling her to meet them at her apartment. She quickly parks her car and heads upstairs, opening the door to reveal her siblings, Brett, Lori, and ... "Mom?" The huntress asks, frozen in the doorway as her breath catches in the back of her throat.
Rosanna places her coffee onto the table as she slowly stands from her seat on the couch, "Elena." She says softly, her voice lacing with a mix of relief and caution, "It's good to see you again." Her words instantly cause Elena's gaze to shift from her mother towards her siblings.
Adriana steps forward from her spot next to Rosanna, "She's here to tell us the truth." The alpha explains, earning a slow nod from her sister which causes the oldest Calavera sibling to turn her attention back towards their mom, "And give us a strategy on how to defeat the Beast and save Mason."
Elena takes a deep breath, knowing this could be her only shot to get some answers. She glances between her siblings and Brett, all three of them giving her a nod of reassurance. The huntress then closes her eyes before reopening them to look at Rosanna, "Okay, let's hear it."
The group settles down in the living room, listening intensely and carefully to the Calavera woman's every word. Brett and Elena sit on one couch while Adriana, Marcos, and Lori sat across from them on another. Rosanna pulls up a chair and sets it in the front of the group.
As she tells her story, Elena realizes it's the same as the theory she came up with in the woods with Theo, "Like I said before in Eichen House." Rosanna begins, snapping the huntress back into reality as her mother continues speaking, "Everything I have done is to protect you, Elena."
Rosanna pauses, glancing around at all of the teenagers in the room before she continues, "I did this so you had the ability to protect your home, your friends...your family." She corrects, her gaze softening when she turns back to Elena. Even though the huntress understood why her mother did what she did, it didn't make it hurt any less.
A sigh escapes from the Calavera woman's lips when Elena breaks eye contact, "I know it doesn't change or fix anything, and I'm not asking for forgiveness." She says softly, taking a deep breath before she continues speaking, "But I'm asking for you to trust me, just long enough until we defeat the Beast and save your friend."
Elena glances around the room, connecting eyes with her friends as they give her a nod in reassurance. The huntress takes a deep breath before bringing her attention back to her mother, "Okay."
Rosanna rubs the palms of her hands on her jeans before standing up and slowly pacing back and forth. All eyes fell on the older woman as she thinks of how to begin, "Elena, your powers are truly remarkable, and you have a deeper connection to the supernatural than you even realize."
After feeling everyone's eyes divert to the huntress she shifts uncomfortably, fiddling with her rings while her mouth parts open slightly to speak. However, her mother raises her hand to stop her, "There are things you probably still didn't even know you could do."
"Like what?" Brett asks, leaning forward slightly, his elbows resting on his knees, his tone cautious but curious.
Rosanna takes a deep breath as she stops her pacing and focuses all of her attention towards her daughter, "She can use her magic not just as a weapon, but as a guide to find Mason's lost soul." The room falls silent, everyone on the edge of their seats as they listen to the Calavera woman continue speaking.
"The Beast of Gévaudan is bound by rage, pain, and the remnants of the soul it once consumed. This means there's still a part of Mason left inside the Beast, and there's still hope in saving him," She explains, causing everyone to slowly nod their heads.
Brett places a comforting hand on Elena's knee, letting her know that he was here for her while the group watches Rosanna pull up a chair and sit in front of them, "Elena will need to tap into the Beast's soul and mind in order to separate Mason and bring him back."
The huntress furrows her eyebrows, "How am I supposed to do that?" She questions, concern and confusion lacing in her voice as she makes eye contact with her mom.
Rosanna leans forward, resting her elbows onto her knees as she meets her daughter's gaze head-on, "It won't be easy." She begins, taking a deep breath before continuing, "The Beast's mind is like a nightmare realm — a place of torment and shadows. You'll need to stay strong, resist its attempts to break you, and break the hold the Beast has over Mason."
"Easier said than done," Marcos mumbles, running a hand through his hair as everyone listens to the rest of Rosanna's words.
The Calavera woman sends her son a sympathetic smile at his attempt to lighten the mood before speaking, "Elena will need to enter a meditative state — clear her mind of any distractions and focus on her connection to the Beast."
Rosanna pauses as she pulls a small, intricately carved amulet from her pocket and hands it to Elena, "This will help keep you grounded. You'll need to hold it tightly when you enter the Beast's mind. It's infused with protective wards designed to shield your spirit from the Beast. However, it only works from a certain distance. You'll need to be nearby in order to use it."
"What about the rest of us? What do we do while Elena is in there?" Brett asks, concern and worry lacing in his voice as he glances down to the amulet in Elena's hands.
Rosanna looks at them with a steady gaze before answering, "We keep the physical world safe. The Beast will sense when its hold is threatened. It may try to break free or lash out. We have to be ready to protect Elena from anything the Beast tries to do to her while she's in there."
Before anyone can say anything else, the huntress's phone begins to buzz in her jacket pocket. She quickly pulls it out, causing Marcos to instantly notice the worry in her eyes as she reads the message, "Who is it?"
"It's Stiles," She begins, a rush of fear consuming her when she reads what the Stilinski boy had sent her, "The Beast went to the police station, attacking everyone in sight." She pauses, placing her phone back into her jacket and grabbing her car keys before opening the front door, "Including Sheriff Stilinski and Lydia."
As soon as those words left Elena's mouth, the teenagers grab their things and race outside and head towards the car. Just as the huntress was about to shut her apartment door, her mother places her hand to prevent her from closing it, "There is something I didn't want to mention in front of the others about the plan."
The huntress freezes, her fingers still gripping the edge of the door. Her gaze sharpens on her mother, who now stands with one hand pressed gently against the door, eyes clouding with the weight of something unspoken, "What is it?" She asks, her voice calm but lacing with a sense of urgency.
Rosanna brings her hand down and takes a step closer towards her daughter, "There is a chance you can get stuck in the Beast's mind alongside Mason forever."
Elena doesn't flinch, but her breath still catches in the back of her throat, "Forever?" She repeats, her voice barely above a whisper, the weight of the word anchoring in her chest.
Her mother slowly nods her head, "If you lose your sense of self in there, if the Beast overwhelms your mind before you can reach Mason... you might not find your way out. Your spirit would be trapped — just like his." She explains, causing Elena's grip on the doorknob to tighten.
She's always known the risks of being a huntress, of facing creatures that blurred the line between myth and nightmare. But this — this was more than a hunt. This was stepping into a realm where her soul was on the line, "If you feel the Beast growing too strong while you're in there, you'll need someone to help bring you back. Someone with a strong connection to you — kind of like an emotional tether."
Elena's mind instantly thinks about a certain werewolf who could fulfill that role which her mother can immediately notice. Rosanna smiles softly looking behind her daughter and noticing Brett standing by the stairs as he waits for the huntress to finish, "It's him, isn't it?" The huntress turns around, her eyes connecting with Brett's as her mother continues speaking, "That's the one."
The Calavera girl's heart pounds in her chest as the weight of her mother's words settles into her bones. She swallows hard and glances back at Rosanna. Her mother places a gentle hand on her daughter's shoulder before continuing, "You'll need to hold onto that. Because when you're inside the Beast's mind, when everything starts to feel like it's slipping away...you'll need to remember what anchors you."
Elena glances down at the amulet in her hand before pocketing it and stepping back towards Brett, "Thank you." She tells her, causing Rosanna to slowly nod her head as a mixture of pride and sorrow fill her eyes. She missed not being able to be there for her children as they grew up.
She knew the consequences of betraying the Dread Doctors would be extreme, but never in a million years did Rosanna think it would be spending half her life in an insane asylum while her children thought she had just abandoned them. A small smile forms on the Calavera woman's face as she looks into her daughter's eyes, thankful at the second chance she got to be here now.
Rosanna wraps her arms tightly around Elena, holding her as if trying to pass every ounce of strength she has into her daughter. The embrace is firm, filled with unspoken forgiveness and a love that had endured through silence and distance. Elena clings to her mother just a second longer, drawing in a deep breath to steady herself before slowly pulling away.
Before Rosanna can say anything else, Elena gives her one final look before heading off towards Brett. As soon as the huntress meets the werewolf, he places a comforting hand on her shoulder, "You okay?" He asks, his eyes full of concern as he looks into hers.
Elena gives him a reassuring nod as a small smile appears on her lips, "Yeah." She mumbles, diverting her gaze back towards her mother who was watching them from across the hall. "Let's go save Mason," She says, bringing her attention back towards the werewolf as slowly nods to her statement before the two of them rush towards her car.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Stiles exits the banshee's hospital room which catches the group's attention and causes everyone to gather around, "How is she?" Elena asks, making the Stilinski boy run a hand through his hair before responding.
"She can barely speak with the amount of pain she's in. I doubt she'll be able to scream in order to bring Mason back," He begins, a sigh escaping his lips as he continues speaking, "Alright. So what do we do now that Lydia's hurt?"
Stiles furrows his eyebrows as he notices Marcos, Elena, Adriana, Lori, and Brett share looks with each other, "Why does it feel like we're missing something?" The human questions again, motioning towards himself, Scott, and Liam.
The huntress inhales sharply which earns a look from Stiles as if he was emphasizing for her to speak up. A sigh escapes the brunette's mouth before speaking, "We might have a way to defeat the Beast and save Mason." She announces, causing the Dunbar boy to instantly step forward after hearing his best friend's name.
"How?" He questions back, hope lacing in his voice as he stares at the huntress in front of him.
Elena's eyes flicker to Liam, his raw hope tightening the knot in her chest. The huntress quickly explains to the three boy's what her mother had told them she needed to do in order to save Mason and defeat the Beast, "What do you guys think?" The Calavera girl asks, noticing the trio slowly nods their heads to her words.
Stiles and Liam turn their attention towards Scott as the alpha takes a deep breath. He places a hand on the huntress's shoulder, looking directly in her eyes before responding, "I think it's our best shot at saving Mason." He announces, causing everyone to nod their heads as they head towards the elevator.
"So what's the plan?" Marcos asks, the group waiting for the elevator to arrive on their floor level.
Scott retracts his hand from the button and turns back around to face his pack, "We find Parrish. He'll lead us to the Beast and he will also be able to help us keep Elena safe." He announces and at the same time, the elevator dings as the door slides open for them to enter.
Once the group was inside, they instantly press the button to head down to the first floor. Brett takes Elena's hand as the elevator doors opens which causes Stiles to quickly rush out of the machine, "Okay. I'll get Malia. Text me when you find Parrish."
"Hold on," The McCall boy says, digging into his pocket and pulling out a jar that was covered with a brown wrapping paper.
He hands it towards his best friend, causing everyone to furrow their eyebrows as they watch the interaction, "What is this?" The Stilinski boy asks, taking the mystery item which causes a faint smile to fall on the alpha's lips.
"Something I've been working on for a while. Just make sure Malia gets it," Scott tells him, making the human boy raise one of his eyebrows.
"Is it plan B?"
Scott simply shrugs his shoulders before replying, "It was plan A."
Stiles slowly shakes his head, skepticism in his voice as he spoke, "Plan A never works."
The alpha simply nods his head, confidence lingering in his actions and words as he looks his best friend in the eye, "This one will." He tells him, causing the pack to quickly part ways and begin their journey to find the Hellhound and werecoyote.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Elena, Scott, Brett, Liam, Marcos, and Adriana run through the tunnels in search of Parrish and Sebastien. The huntress could feel the weight of everything closing in — the damp air pressing against her lungs, the thundering sound of footsteps echoing off the concrete walls, and Lydia's warning replaying over and over in her mind like a haunting whisper.
It had almost slipped the Calavera girl's mind until the harsh reality of it clawed its way back to the forefront of her thoughts: Someone's going to die tonight. Elena's chest tightens, her strides faltering for a moment as the words echo louder in her head. Tonight would be someone's final night alive because Lydia had sensed it. And when a banshee feels death approaching, it was never a guess. It was a certainty.
A chill runs down her spine as she realizes that any one of her friends could be the one the banshee felt slipping away. It could be Mason if she failed to bring him back. It could be herself if she isn't strong enough to fight the Beast's hold. It could be Scott if he sacrifices himself in battle. It could be anyone. And that's what terrified Elena the most.
Snapping the huntress out of her thoughts is Liam as a sound of electricity fills the groups ears, "Scott, can you hear that?" He asks, causing everyone to hear the exact same sound yet again.
"I heard that," Elena mumbles, causing the four werewolves to protectively step in front of the huntress and her brother.
Liam looks down to his feet, noticing that the group had all been standing in water which instantly registers in his head, "Elena! Marcos! Get out of the water!" He shouts, pushing the Calavera twins against the wall before an agonizing pain shot up through him and the three other werewolves.
The four of them yell in pain as they fall to the ground after being electrocuted. After Elena registers what had just happened, she quickly makes her way over to help Brett to his feet. However, Theo Raeken suddenly emerges from around the corner and grabs a hold of the huntress.
He stares into the brunette's eyes, guilt and sorrow lingering in his gaze, "I'm sorry it had to come to this, Elena." He begins, causing the Calavera girl's eyes to widen as he looks over her face one last time. "But I can't have you interfering with my plan," He finishes, tossing the huntress down a hole in the ground.
A quick scream escapes her lips as she closes her eyes to brace for impact, but Scott manages to catch her hand before she fell all the way down. Theo kneels beside the alpha, stabbing him in his side with his venom laced claws, "You feel that, Scott?" The Raeken boy asks, realization painting on the McCall boy's face as he feels what it is.
"Kanima venom. Just let it happen, let it go. Let everything go," He instructs, causing the huntress to scream as she feels Scott's grasp start to loosen.
After a few minutes, the alpha lets go of Elena's hand which causes the huntress to fall into the abyss of darkness. Her eyes quickly shut as she braces for impact against the floor below. However, what she didn't expect was for there to be a mattress that was lying there — almost as if it was waiting for her.
Once the initial shock of everything wears off, she instantly rises to her feet and begins looking for an exit. Her eyes immediately land on the door that was keeping her in, causing her to quickly rush over to open it. A groan escapes her lips when she realizes it was locked from the outside.
She runs a hand through her hair, biting the inside of her cheek as she thinks of ways to escape without using any of her magic since she didn't want to tire herself out before entering the Beast's mind. After coming up empty, she slowly slides her back against one of the walls, her thoughts consuming her mind as time passes by.
She didn't know how long it's been since she's been down here. She didn't know if her friends were save from the Beast, or if Theo had managed to steal its powers. She didn't even know if it was too late to save Mason. Elena sits in the dark, cold room — the silence deafening, broken only by the dull thud of her heartbeat and the occasional clang of metal pipes above.
Her knees are pulled up tightly to her chest, she tried to steady her breath, to push back the creeping panic that was beginning to settle into her bones. However, she quickly pushes those negative thoughts away and attempts to calm herself down. She needed to stay strong and get herself out of here.
She slowly stands back up, beginning to muster up all her strength and try to open the door in front of her. As she continues pulling on the handle, a sword slices through the door which instantly causes her to step back. It wasn't long after the door falls down, revealing none other than Kira Yukimura and Rosanna Calavera.
She slowly brings her weapon back towards her side before speaking, "Sorry I'm late. I brought a guest." She announces, earning a small smile from the huntress as she quickly embraces both of them in a quick hug to say thank you for saving her. Bringing the girls back into reality is the Beast as it roars loudly throughout the tunnels.
Elena immediately grabs a hold of her friend's hand and rushes off towards the noise with her mother not too far behind. It wasn't long after they found the Beast fighting against her friends, all of them covered in blood and bruises. The huntress takes a deep breath before focusing on her mother's instructions from earlier.
She begins clearing her mind and focuses on saving Mason. And with one final exhale, Elena's spirit slips from her body — her mind diving deep into the void tethered to the Beast's soul. As soon as the huntress opens her eyes again, she sees nothing but darkness.
It surrounds her like a living thing. Oppressive. Suffocating. Echoes of growls and screams ripple through the shadows, not just heard — but felt. Every step Elena takes feels like walking through wet concrete, the world around her bending and shifting like a nightmare come to life.
She walks forward cautiously, gripping the amulet in her hand as a faint light glimmers in the distance, "Mason!" She calls out, her voice echoing back to her being the only thing she can hear as she continues traveling forward. All of a sudden, the realm begins to show memories of every painful thing Mason has endured.
Each memory affecting Elena as if she was the one who went through it, "Mason!" The huntress shouts out again, pushing past the pain and agonizing feeling she was going through to locate the Hewitt boy's whereabouts in this realm. The darkness tightens, as though the nightmare itself resents her intrusion. The shadows swirl violently, pulling her into visions she can't control.
However, Elena freezes in place when she hears a faint sob amongst all of the chaos. Her breath hitches in the back of her throat as she zeroes in on the sound, "Mason!" She calls again, more urgently this time, her voice cracking as the realm tries to drown her out with shrieking echoes and whispered lies.
She desperately pushes forward, the light from the amulet wildly flickering as it reacts to the torrent of emotion — Mason's pain, his fear, and somewhere buried beneath it, his will to survive. Elena brings the amulet to her chest and tightly closes her eyes, trying her best to focus on which direction the amulet was telling her to go.
The Calavera girl takes a deep breath before opening her eyes and continuing forward with the amulet glowing brighter as she moves. Elena's eyes widen when the shadows slowly disappear which allows her to finally see him. He was sitting with his legs crossed over one another on the ground — his eyes glowing the same icy blue as the Beast.
"Mason!" She shouts out again, immediately sprinting over towards him, but the moment her foot touches the area surrounding him, she is instantly flung backwards. A groan escapes the Calavera girl's lips as she picks her head up to see a force field gleaming around him.
Elena stands back onto her feet and heads over towards the barrier, a look of determination forming on her face as she closes her eyes to let her powers flow through her. On the outside world, the Calavera girl's body begins to float into the air as the group continues battling the Beast.
Sebastien takes notice of the brunette as her hands flicker a familiar red. His eyes widen as he tosses Scott to the side, "La Sorcière." He mumbles, causing all eyes to fall on the huntress as her hands continue to glow.
The Valet man begins to push through the pack, sending all of them into the wall and heading straight for Elena. His eyes change into its icy blue as he raises his claws in the air, getting ready to puncture the Calavera girl's stomach. Just as he was about to do so, Rosanna Calavera quickly stands in front of her daughter which causes his claws to be lunged into her abdomen instead.
Sebastien twists his claws out of frustration when he sees it wasn't the huntress he had stabbed. A small smile forms on Rosanna's lips, thankful she was able to give Elena the time she needed to save her friends. The Valet man roars loudly before tossing Rosanna to the side and allowing the Beast to take over.
Meanwhile, Elena had finally gathered enough strength to use her powers to get through to the Hewitt boy, "MASON!" The huntress shouts out, her eyes shooting back open to the real world to reveal the same red her hands were glowing. The Beast lets out a high pitched scream, exploding into a black mist and not long after, Mason Hewitt, steps out from the smoke before landing in Corey's arms.
The spirit of the Beast begins to travel throughout the air of the tunnel until it was stopped by Parrish who was already on fire, "Scott!" He calls out, making the McCall boy quickly pick up the pike and throw it directly into the creature's chest which causes it to erupt into nothingness.
During this moment, Elena returns back to her normal self which causes Brett to instantly run over to her side, "You did it." He tells her, bringing her into a tight embrace when he sees that she was okay.
A small smile forms on the huntress's face before closing her eyes to enjoy the moment with the werewolf, "So, that's it?" Scott asks, catching both Elena and Brett's attention which causes them to pull away from each other. "Is everyone okay?" The alpha continues, making the Calavera glance around to all of her friends as they all happily nod when they realized it was finally over.
Elena furrows her eyebrows when she doesn't see her mother amongst the crowd. However, before she can ask about it, a voice shouts out from the bottom of the tunnel, "Not everyone!" The Calavera girl's eyes widen when she sees Theo Raeken standing there, electricity running through his veins as he approaches the group.
Brett instantly stands in front of Elena while Theo sends a wave of electricity towards them. Luckily for them, Kira catches his attempt of attack with her sword. Her eyes glow their familiar orange as she stares at the Raeken boy in front of them, "The Skinwalkers have a message for you, Theo. Your sister wants to see you."
The Kitsune spoke before stabbing her sword into the ground, creating electric blue cracks all across the floor until it had reached the Chimera. A hole forms in the ground, and a monstrous, zombie-like girl begins to crawl out of it. She grips onto his leg, pulling him down into the hole with her as he grips the edges of the ground.
"No, no! Scott, help me! Scott! Elena! Elena, please — help me! Please, help me!!!" Theo pleads, causing the huntress to shut her eyes after feeling the tears start to brim in her eyes. Brett interlocks their hands in an attempt to comfort the brunette as the sound of Theo's screams slowly fade away.
The Calavera girl opens her eyes, biting the inside of her cheek when she sees the Raeken boy was gone. Just as Elena thought that was it, she hears her brother's voice beside her, "Elena! Adriana!" He calls out, causing both Calavera girls to rush over, their eyes widening when they see their brother crouched down next to their bleeding out mother.
"Mom?" Elena whispers, squatting down next to her brother as Adriana stands behind them with the pack gathering around. The huntress quickly looks over Rosanna's injuries — but one glance was enough to know. There's too much blood. The wound is too deep. And there was nothing she can do.
A tear falls from Elena's eyes, realization hitting her as she stares at her mother. Rosanna lifts her hand, weakly brushing her fingers along Elena's cheek to wipe her tears away, "Mi hija..." She begins, her voice weak and soft but still filled with love and warmth, "You did what I knew you could. You saved your friends...you saved your family."
Elena smiles softly at her mother's words, more tears spilling from her eyes as she continues listening to Rosanna, "I am so proud of you." She pauses, glancing towards Marcos and Adriana before adding, "I'm proud of all three of you." She says, using her other hand to grab onto Marcos's hand while Adriana crouches down behind her siblings to place an arm around both of them.
"My beautiful children," Rosanna mumbles, her lips curl into a faint smile while her eyes flutter back and forth between open and closed. Her chest rises in one final, shallow breath. And with that, her eyes close for good. The warmth fades from her body, leaving only silence in her place.
The air hangs heavy around them — the quiet broken only by Elena's soft cries, the occasional sniffle from Marcos, and the deep, grieving silence of the pack. Even the wind seems to hold its breath because Rosanna Calavera was dead. Elena's mother was gone and this time, she wasn't coming back.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
After Rosanna's funeral, Elena found herself sitting in front of her best friend's headstone. A sad smile rests on her lips as she inhales sharply while picking at the grass beneath her, "It's been two weeks since everything that happened." Elena begins, biting the inside of her cheek as she thinks back to everything she had endured these past months.
"Life is slowly but surely getting better," She pauses, turning her head slightly to see the Talbot boy standing with her brother and sister as they wait for the huntress, "Brett's been by my side through all of it...You would've really liked him, Ally. He's way better than that last guy I talked to." Elena says, a soft smile resting on her lips as she thinks back to the numerous times Allison had told the Calavera girl to leave her old fling back in Mexico.
Elena takes a deep breath, thinking back to the reason on why she is here today, "I still can't believe my mother's actually gone...Like even though she wasn't there for a time, I at least still knew she was alive." She pauses again, slowly shaking her head before adding.
"It felt like I just got her back, you know? And now it just feels like I've lost her all over again but this time for good..." Elena's voice cracks slightly at the end, her fingers curling tighter into the blades of grass as if grounding herself in the only reality that hasn't changed beneath her, "I keep thinking maybe I could've done something —anything — differently to prevent it."
"But I still don't think it would've made a difference...because I think she knew it was her time," A tear slips down her cheek, but she brushes it away quickly, not wanting her siblings or Brett to see, "She died saving me. That's just who she was, even after everything. She was a fighter."
Elena swallows hard, her gaze falling to the small bouquet she brought — wildflowers, her best friend's favorite flower and along with the ones her mother put behind her ear when traveling through the woods. Gently, she lays them at the base of Allison's headstone, "I love you, Ally...and I hope you give my mother the grand tour up there."
The huntress jokes, glancing towards the sky as she takes a deep breath as she lets the summer breeze wrap around her like a silent goodbye, before finally turning to rejoin her siblings and Brett — each step forward heavier than the last, but also more certain. Because no matter how much she had lost, Elena Calavera was still standing. And she owed it all to her mother and best friend, Rosanna Calavera and Allison Argent.
