CHAPTER TWO:
THE NEWS REPORTERS

NIGHT HAD FINALLY came to the people of Woodsboro as they stayed warm in their homes, parents scared for their families after the recent murders that had happened just the night before. The crickets chirping could be heard, adding to the many other sounds that echoed throughout the neighborhood where the Prescott household stood.
Police and emergency vehicles could be seen in front of the Prescott house, sirens echoing throughout the night as they still arrived or were leaving with the suspect in the back seat as he called out his girlfriend's name in a pleading tone, handcuffs on his wrists behind his back. Sheriff Burke had arrived when he was being dragged into a car.
As Dwight Riley, who was called Dewey by everyone, and Sheriff Burke reached Sidney, who sat with a blanket around her shoulders in the back of an emergency vehicle, a car could be seen pulling up to the driveway, stopping at the end. The doors to the car were almost pushed open as Y/n and Tatum rushed out, concern expressions etched on their faces.
Just earlier, Tatum had been at practice before she was going to pick up both girls so they could sleep over at her place, especially since Sidney's father was out of town. She had gone to pick up Y/n first, who was at the video store to get them a movie for the night, before they would come and get Sidney. Though they were surprised to see the police there.
"You gonna be able to come down to the station and answer a few questions, Sid?" Dewey questions, getting a nod.
"Oh, shit! Sidney!" Y/n calls out, rushing over.
"God, Sid, I'm so sorry we were late." Tatum tells her. "Are you alright?"
Dewey grabs his sister's arm. "Tatum, you guys can't be here. This is an official crime scene."
"It's okay." Sidney reassures.
Tatum sighs, looking at her older brother. "Her dad's out of town. She's staying with us tonight. And so is Y/n."
"Does mom know?" Dewey asks.
Tatum rolls her eyes. "Yes, doofus."
Sheriff Burke finally spoke up as he ushered for the girl to get out of here and down to the station. Tatum and Y/n wrapped their arms around Sidney as they moved to Dewey's police car, opening the door for them before they went inside as Dewey showed the sheriff the ghostface mask he had found.
Just as Dewey was starting the car, a van pulled up before Gale Weathers was rushing out of it, curses leaving her. She moved close to Dewey's vehicle when he pressed on the gas, touching the car a bit as she tried to get a peak into the window, calling out Sidney's name. Inside of the car, Sidney hid her face as Dewey drove off.
"Excuse me." Gale begins as she moves to Y/n and Tatum, who were moving to Tatum's car. "Was that Sidney Prescott they took away?"
"We're not talking to you." Y/n informs.
"What happened to her?" Gale questions.
"None of your damn business." Y/n snaps, hopping into Tatum's vehicle.
"I heard something about a costume. Is that true?" Gale continues as she taps on the window once they were inside. "Can either of you tell me anything?"
"Yeah, you're a real pain in the ass." Tatum replies, pressing on the gas. "Leave Sid alone."
And with that, she drove off, leaving Gale and her cameraman to watch her leave, annoyance and shock written on the reporter's face as she turned to the Kenny, who was ready and holding up the camera.
It didn't take all that long for them to reach the police station, finding a parking spot before getting past all the news reporters, insisting they knew Sidney. Moving down the hall of the police station, they caught sight of two officers holding Billy by the arms as they escorted him down the hall while he called out to his girlfriend.
Turning the corner, they caught sight of Sidney sitting at Dewey's desk as she refused to look at her boyfriend while he continued to call out to her in a pleading tone. Y/n was the first to move to the brunette, a concerned frown on her face as she crouched down beside Sidney, gently rubbing her arms. Tatum was right behind her, whispering reassuring words.
"Hey, Dewey, can we go now?" Tatum calls out to her brother after a minute.
Dewey holds up his finger. "Hold on a second."
"Goddamn it, Dewey!" Tatum snaps, receiving 'oh' sounds from the office.
"What did mama tell you? When I wear this badge, you treat me like a man of the law!" Dewey reminds in a weak voice.
Tatum rolls her eyes. "I'm sorry, Deputy Dewey boy, but we're ready to go. Now, okay?"
Tatum grabs Sidney's hand, then grabbing Y/n's before she pulled them towards her brother. Sheriff Burke was quick to suggest them going through the back to avoid the news reporters. They reached the back door as Dewey rushed to his car, instructing the girls to stay in the alley as he jogged off.
There was a moment of silence as the three stood in the alley together just when the sound of a voice calling out Sidney's name could be heard. Y/n rolled her eyes as Gale Weathers rushed towards them with her cameraman right behind her, followed by many other news reporters rushing down when they heard Gale call out her name.
"Hi, that's some night. What happened? Are you alright?" Gale asks, shoving the microphone in her face.
Y/n pushes her hand away. "She's not answering any questions. Just leave us alone."
Sidney steps forward. "No, Y/n, it's okay. She's just doing her job, right, Gale?"
Gale nods. "Yes, that's right."
"So, how's the book?" Sidney questions just as Dewey pulls into the alley.
"Well, it'll be out later this year." Gale replies.
Sidney hums. "I'll look for it."
"I'll send you a copy." Gale assures.
All of a sudden, Sidney was spinning back around to face the woman and swinging her fist, punching the news reporter right in the face. Gale fell backwards and into her cameraman's arms before staring up at Sidney in shock, seeing the teenager glaring down at her with a clenched jaw.
Dewey rushed out of his vehicle, moving towards them. Y/n felt her jaw slacked open as she glanced between her best friend and Gale as Dewey reached them, gently grabbing Sidney's arms while moving her to the car. Letting out a laugh, Y/n trailed behind them as she moved to the back of the vehicle.
* * *
It was later on in the evening, the Riley household quiet as the people in the home got themselves ready for bed. The news was all over as they spoke about the new recent attack that had occurred and the victim that survived the murderer, then talking about the rough punch Gale Weathers had received.
Inside of Tatum's bedroom in her home, the three girls could be seen in their pajamas, laying on each of the three beds that could be seen, same blanket and pillows. The door was wide open as Tatum's mother or Dewey occasionally walked by. With an oversized t-shirt on, Y/n leaned against the back of the bed as she and Sidney listened to Tatum rant.
"God, I loved it. 'I'll send you a copy'. Bam! Bitch went down." Tatum rambles as she sends a punch to her stuffed animal as if to recreate the moment, sitting up. "'I'll send you a copy'. Bam! Sid -- super bitch! You are so cool."
Dewey walks in, holding an ice pack. "Thought you might want some ice for that right hook."
Sidney holds her hand out as he tosses the ice pack over his sister's head. The brunette catches it with ease, softly placing the ice against her fist as she mumbles a quiet 'thanks' to the older man.
"I'll be right next door. Try to get some sleep." Dewey instructs.
Tatum only waves her brother away before he leaves the room, closing the door behind him. For a moment, it's silent as Sidney shifts in her spot on the bed, turning her back towards the other two girls and placing the ice pack down. Y/n stretches as she glances to the blonde on the other bed.
"Do you really think Billy did it?" Y/n asks, adding curiosity in her tone.
Sidney frowns. "He was there, Y/n."
"He was destined to have a flaw." Tatum states. "I knew he was too perfect."
Just then, a knock could be heard on the door before Tatum's mother stepped inside, claiming someone was calling for Sidney. Hopeful it was her dad, the brunette moved off the bed and out of the room, venturing towards the phone.
Sidney grabs the phone, holding it to her ear. "Hello?"
"Hello, Sidney." That same voice greets, causing her entire body to freeze.
"No!" Sidney exclaims, to which the others rush out of the room.
"Poor Billy boyfriend. An innocent guy doesn't stand a chance with you." The voice comments.
Sidney clenches her jaw. "Leave me alone!"
"Looks like you fingered the wrong guy..." The voice continues. "...again."
Sidney rubs the back of her neck. "Who are you?"
"Don't worry. You'll find out soon enough. I promise." The voice replies.
And with that, the phone disconnects as Sidney shakily places the phone back down. As they were talking, Mrs. Riley had rushed to her son's room and Dewey was rushing out just as the phone disconnected. Sidney moves back in Tatum's room with the other two and Tatum's mom right behind her, leaving Dewey in the hall, holding his gun.
