( FAYE )
as the car steers into an unfamiliar town, our eyes scan the streets for a potential place to stay.
i watch the quaint buildings with intrigue, spotting a vintage motel, its neon retro sign beckoning like a siren of nostalgia.
i direct sadies attention towards it. "that looks nice"
with that, and a shared glance and a shrug, we pull into the motel's parking lot.
the two of us step through the wooden doors, glancing around the crowded lobby as we head towards the reception.
a friendly clerk who seems to have stepped right out of the '60s welcomes us with a warm grin.
"hello! how can i help you today?"
"we're looking for a room for the weekend" sadie states.
the clerk nods, handing us a set of keys attached to a wooden fob with a number etched into it.
"room 7, right at the end of the corridor. enjoy your stay!" she chirps.
"thank you" i smile back at her as we head to our room.
"she was way too sweet, that's scary" sadie murmurs, narrowing her eyes as we walk.
we step through the rooms door and find ourselves transported to a different time.
"holy shit" the redhead gasps, taking everything in. "this is the coolest motel i've ever seen"
the air carries a faint scent of nostalgia, as if past decades still linger here. the room is cozy and compact, yet it carries an aura that only years of history can cultivate.
an evening glow sneaks itself past the slightly worn but laced curtains, casting patterns on the wooden floor.
the centerpiece of the room is a massive, cushioned queen-size bed, with a golden-yellow bedspread draping over it.
a rotary dial phone rests on the wooden nightstand, its holes a reminder of when reaching out to someone required patience and wristwork.
i pull out my phone upon seeing the retro and abstract paintings that adorn the walls, immediately snapping a picture.
"faye, look"
sadie directs my attention towards a small record player that sits on an antique table, surrounded by vinyl records of former tunes.
i gasp. "we have to listen to these!" i almost squeal, causing her to burst into laughter.
"i'm staying here forever" i grin, dropping on the warm hued bedsheets.
the redhead joins me. the two of us lie side to side as we gaze up towards the unadorned ceiling, a plain surface amidst the chaos.
"okay so i think we can rest for a while and then head out at night-"
"no. i'm staying here forever" i object, causing her to scoff.
"we can't stay inside the whole weekend"
i turn over, facing her. "says who?"
"me" she grins. "we should explore this town"
i groan. "whatever you say"

"hello, again! enjoying your stay?"
i grin back at the clerk, squinting my eyes. "well, we've only been here 30 minutes"
she maintains her gaze, wearing an expectant smile, prompting me to respond.
"yes, we're enjoying it" i nod.
"great! so, anything you need?"
"yes, actually" i start. "do you know any good places to eat around here?"
"oh, are you having dinner alone?" she suddenly inquires, her emerald eyes meeting my gaze.
i shrug. "yeah, sadies tired. figured i'd just bring something back for her"
she nods, tilting her head slightly. "there's a really good diner down the road, 'the whistle stop cafe' it's got the best apple pie in town"
she hums, pressing her palms on the counter and leaning towards me. "but i have to say, it's not as inviting as the company you'd find here"
caught off guard, i chuckle nervously.
"uhm, thanks for the recommendation" i grin. "i'll definitely check it out"
i turn around, heading for the doors.
a slight smile tugs at my lips as i reflect on what just happened. i can't wait to tell sadie.

i whack sadie with a pillow, chuckling as she stirs awake with a groan, making a half-hearted attempt to snatch the pillow from my hands.
"stop, you monster"
i cease my torment, allowing her to sit up beside me with a long yawn. "what time is it?"
"8PM" i nod.
she rubs her eyes, groaning once more as she feels her temperature with her hand.
i reach out to touch her forehead, frowning. "i brought medicine, have it after you eat"
i place the paper bag in front of her and observe as she tears it open, mumbling a "thanks"
"so..." a smile grazes my lips. "i think the clerk was flirting with me"
the redhead furrows her brows, slightly chuckling. "oh yeah?"
i nod. "i think so"
she remains silent for a while, before clearing her throat. "we passed a club coming here"
"a club?"
"yeah, like a night club"
i chew on my lower lip. "with a bar?"
"you don't have to drink. we can just go check it out tonight. if it's too much, we'll come back"
"okay" i shrug, the idea not being too opposing.
a content grin laces her expression as her gaze remains on me. "okay"
"hi finn" i grin, arranging my phone against a stack of sadies books. i'm not sure why she packed so many, we're just here for the weekend.
"hi!" his voice bursts through the device speakers. "having fun?"
"well, so far we've slept through most of the day and fayes been rizzed up by the motel clerk" sadie grins. "so, yeah! we are"
"should i be concerned?" finn deadpans.
"yes" i nod.
"anyways, come back soon. kiki and poppy miss you"
sadie gasps. "oh my god! can i see them?"
"here's one of the fuckers" finn turns the camera around, revealing kiki chewing on a pair of socks.
"those are mine" i groan while sadie awes.
"i know" his grin can be heard through the phone.
"where's poppy?" sadie whines.
"oh, kiki ate her" he casually states.
i chuckle as sadie smacks my shoulder, shooting me a glare. "not funny"
"hey, i didn't say it" i huff, rolling my eyes.
"oh!" i grin. "finn, you have to see this"
i grab my phone, my legs rushing over to the antique table holding old records.
a loud gasp erupts from my phone, nearly breaking the speakers. i chuckle as he yells out a tangled jumble of stuttering words.
"i know right!" i excitedly agree with his nonsensical comments.
he takes a deep breath in, then out. following a moment of silence, he calmly speaks up.
"steal them. bring everything. bye"
the call abruptly ends with a resounding click, leaving a lingering silence on the line.
