ANDREA SIGHED as she locked her phone, leaning her head against the window. The sun beating down her as she was deep in thought, her eyes glossy from the conversation she just had with her father. It was something they always do on this day March 15, was a day they both hated, a day full of hurt and angry laid within it.
The brunette sniffled as she rubbed her eyes before standing up and wiping her hands on her pants. Running a hand through her hair, she made her way out of the room and into the living room where Calum and her had decided the piano would go when they first moved in together.
Placing herself down, her fingers brushed against the keys gently. Andrea glanced around the room for a brief moment before taking a deep breath and pressing the keys down to the same melody she would play on this day.
"No time for goodbyes, didn't get to apologize pieces of a clock that lies broken," she sang, a lump formed in her throat as she tried to hold back the tears that tried to escape, "if I could take us back, if I could just do that, and write in every empty space."
Her eyes began to water as she remember all the moments with her mother, sitting down at the piano they held in the Marjorie household, singing with her mother before going to bed, "the words I love you in replace then maybe time would not erase me."
Andrea took in a shaky breath as she glanced up, wishing that life would've been different. A smile ghosted her lips at all the memories they had shared together. Learning how to play the guitar, her first day of high school and how proud her mother was of her.
"If you could only know I never let you go and the words I most regret are the ones I never meant to leave."
A tear fell down her cheek as she remember the last memories of her. Andrea was just fifteen, moments before the two of them had a misunderstanding. The brunette girl stood in the kitchen as she watched her mother's face dropped, her eyes knitted together in anger.
Andrea rolling her eyes at her mothers words before Mariah broke and she had fully yelled at her daughter. Andrea didn't understand why she was angry than but now thinking back to it, she understood why.
Mariah was loosing her battle with cancer and Andrea had no clue about it.
So, the moment where Andrea was about to walk out of the house, Mariah had called out to her to stay, just for that night. But instead Andrea said a few hurtful words before running out of the house.
And then in the early morning when Andrea had gotten back home was when she saw the flashing lights of the ambulance in front of her house. Causing her to drop her things and bolting into the house, watching as the paramedics wheel her mother out.
And that was when Andrea broke. Her screams echoed through the house as Heath rushed over towards his daughter and wrapped his arms around, cradling her head in his chest, whispering sweet things into her ear to help her calm down.
The two sat like that for a while, not moving a inch unless it was to go to the toilet. Andrea felt awful and she wished that she could replay that day over and over again, wishing that she would've just stay and not walk out without saying goodbye.
Her last words to her mother haunted her, she wished she could can't it all back. But it was too late for that. Mariah was gone, her 16 months fight against cancer took her.
Heath had made it his mission to let his daughter know that it wasn't her fault, to let her know that Mariah knew she didn't mean what she had said. Leaving behind a couple letters for her daughter to read when she was ready too. One saying goodbye the other one for her wedding day.
Mariah knew she wouldn't have made it that far even after Heath had told her otherwise but she knew, she knew.
Andrea would reread the letter, smiling at the handwriting. The handwriting that recalled all the memories of Andrea going to her mother and asking to write a note so she didn't have to do p.e or explain why she was late to school that day.
Even though Mariah had said in the letter that she knew Andrea didn't mean the words she had said that day. Andrea wanted to go back and unsay them, wanting to stay rather walk out.
Andrea sighed, dropping her hands from the piano. Getting up, she wiped aways the tears that had escaped when the door open. Revealing Calum and Maggie, the blonde rolled her eyes at the sight of the brunette.
A smile ghosted Calum's lips, letting go of Maggie's hand. He made his way over towards her, the Maori boy sent her a small smile before awkwardly wrapping his arms around her waist.
Andrea took a minute before wrapped her arms around his shoulders, taking a second to breath his sent in before snuggling closer towards him. It take all her strength not to break down.
The brunette quickly remembered that Maggie was there, she awkwardly pushed Calum off. Sending him a small smile before clearing her throat, "I should probably go," she mumbled, running a hand through her hair as she made her way over towards the door, opening it, "I'll see you when I get home."
"Andy," Calum called out, gigs eyebrows knitted together in worry, he turned towards the blonde, pressing a kiss on her temple, "I gotta go after her," he informed her before rushing out after the brunette. "Andrea!" He called out once again, making the brunette stop.
Her back was turned towards him, a few tears had escape, her shoulders began to tremble. It didn't take long before the Maori boys arms wrapped around her frame, "come on," he mumbled, pushing her towards the end of the hallway, "I'm taking you somewhere."
Andrea shook her head, "what about Maggie?"
"She'll understand," Calum reassured, rubbing her shoulder, "I have to make sure you're okay."
Andrea sighed, shaking her head as Calum director then towards his car and placing the brunette girl in the passenger seat before hopping into the drivers seat and driving off.
...
CALUM'S CAR PULLED UP near the lookout point, Andrea's eyebrows knitted in confusion as she glanced around the area, titling her head at the Maori boy, "you brought me here to kill me, didn't ya?" She joked, opening the car door, "thought after all these years."
Calum chuckled, shaking his head at the brunette, "shut up," he mumbled, making his way over towards the front of the car.
Andrea slowly made her way over towards him, pulling down the selves of her jacket awkwardly as she stood beside him. Who know after all these years of being friends, they felt like strangers in this moment. The brunette glanced over at him and send him a shy smile as she hopped onto the hood, her eyes travelled around the area.
Calum's eyes land in her, never once leaving her face, the corner of his lips turned upwards. The brunette turned her attention towards the Maori boy, "why'd you bring me here?" She questioned.
"Andrea?" He questioned, raising his eyebrows at her attempt to start any kind of conversation. It wasn't just Andrea that felt the awkwardness that surround the both of them.
Andrea shrugged her shoulders, "I just mean you could've gotta In & Out and I would've been fine."
Calum shook his head, hopping on the hood beside her, "you're not fine," he stated, Andrea's eyebrows knitted together as she listen to him continue, "I'm your best friend, nibbles. You can't hide."
The brunette sighed as a lump in her throat formed as she stared out in front of her, "it doesn't get better," she admitted, "I miss her."
"I miss her too," Calum mumbled, glancing over at the brunette, "and I know that the both of you liked to watch the sunset together."
Andrea's lips twitched upwards as she glanced over at him, their eyes meeting and for a second the two of the felt something, "is that why you brought me out here?"
"That and the fact it looks exactly like the lookout we always walked past on the way to school," Calum told her, a smile ghosted his lips. His eyes softened as he traced all her facial features. And he knew in that moment was that his feeling for her, never left. Calum was still madly in love with the girl in front of him but he couldn't. He had a girlfriend that he loves. Or did he?
The Maori boy dropped his smile, moving his attention towards the sunset. Taking in a deep breath as he tried to shake those thoughts away.
Andrea nodded, adverting her eyes away, "thank you," she mumbled, "thank you for being an amazing best friend."
And there was that word again. The two of them love to use. Best friends. Two words that made their hearts ping of hurt even if they were both in a relationship with others. And they both knew it wasn't right to feel that way for the other but it wasn't their fault, they don't get to choose who they love.
Their hearts do that. Even if it wasn't meant to be.
It seems as if they would always miss each other. When the other was single, the other one would be in a relationship or if they were both single, they were afraid to make the first move. Scared that if they did, their friendship they've had since they were 4 would've just be gone. Just like that.
And they didn't wanna risk losing the best thing in their life.
Calum almost did. And he didn't wanna risk it. Not again.
"So," Calum spoke, causing the brunette to glanced back over at him, "has the album going?"
"Great," Andrea nodded, running a hand through her hair, "just in a couple songs recorded and I'm done."
"Got a single yet?"
Andrea shook her head, sighing as she glanced back at the sunset, "not yet."
"What about the one you record with Luke and that?"
"Didn't really like it," Andrea admitted, her lips pressing into a thin line.
"You'll get here," Calum reassured, nudging her shoulder with his, "I believe in you."
Andrea's lips twitched upwards as she let out a giggle at the action, causing the Maori boy's heart to flutter at the sound, "what about the new album?"
Calum shrugged, "we're getting there," he took a deep breath, "hey, we should write another sing together."
Andrea nodded, "just like old time?"
"Just like old times," Calum repeated as their eyes met, "we could start next week?"
Andrea sighed as she ran a hand through her hair, shaking her head, "can't. I'm going to the UK with Harry next week."
"How long?" He questioned, his shoulder sagging a bit.
"Couple weeks," Andrea informed him, "and then I go back to set."
Calum nodded, his lips pressing into a thin line as he glanced back towards the sunset, "maybe next time."
"Maybe next time," She repeated, nodding as she glanced back over at the sunset. Letting her head rest in the Maori boy's shoulder.
Calum glanced down at her, a smile ghosted his lips at the sight before glancing back at the sunset in front of them, "we keep missing each other," he whispered to himself, hoping the brunette didn't hear him.
