SYNOPSIS:

𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐄 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐓 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐀𝐍 𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐘 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄. She was not born into wealth, never worthy of the French aristocracy. No, she lived amongst the so many poor souls that lined the streets of Paris, struggling to gather enough food to sustain their already emaciated bodies. She was one of the many bodies huddled along the streets of the city, with empty blue eyes and hollowed cheeks. An orphan.

But so many years living on the streets taught her many valuable tricks, skills that kept her alive. She learned how to pickpocket, how to keep herself sustained on only the bare minimum of necessities. How to not let the fact she was friendless, parentless, and haunted consume her. She became her own best friend (a fact that was very sad to many), she became her own protector. Her own savior.

But then the First World War erupted.

Celeste knew not of the cruelties of war, how it slaughtered the finest of men at the very devil's command. How it left men missing both body parts and fractions of their very minds. How it corrupted society to its very core and devastated civilization worse than any natural disaster would dare.

If she had known all that then maybe she wouldn't have enlisted to be a nurse in the war. Maybe then her past would have been different, maybe it would have been better, or perhaps even worse.

Celeste was sent to the Battle of Verdun, one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

The sheer amount of waxy corpses that Celest saw would have rivaled the number of souls in hell. All caked in a macabre mixture of crimson blood and layers of mud. The number of missing limbs that had at first, sent an onslaught of nausea erupting from her stomach, did not bother her anymore. She became part of a well-oiled machine, cleaning wounds and suturing abrasions. Offering any trivial amount of comfort that she could to the men who had battled demons worthy of Satan.

But despite the hellfire of carnage that burned around her, Celeste had found her own slice of heaven amongst the war in the name of Harry O'Brien.

Celeste had been treating Harry for concussion in the very early days of the battle when she discerned he was different. When she had been slapped in the face with the realization that he was not like any soldier she had treated. Their relationship had blossomed quickly, offering them both a heavenly reprieve from the war that raged around them. Giving Celeste a slight glimpse into the fantasy that she had yearned after for so long.

But then one day Harry disappeared, never to be seen again. Celeste had only been told they were shipped off to the Somme hours after their departure, leaving her once again, heartbroken and alone. Living in a world that constantly snuffed out the only light she had managed to capture. She waited months for any correspondence from Harry, each day feeling herself die a little more at his lack of response.

And as soon as the war came to its conclusion, she went looking for Harry, scouring every place that he could potentially be until she found proof of his life. Or even a corpse to confirm his death.

So she had set out for Birmingham, looking for the man that had Harry's Seargent Major. A man that went by the name of Tommy Shelby.

A man that she would come to realize, was a lot more dangerous than what met the eye.

QUOTES:

Are you Mr. Thomas Shelby?

For you, I can be whoever you desire.

It's not a good idea to look at Tommy Shelby the wrong way.

I've seen the devil, Tommy. And he scares me more than you do.

I can't have good things, Celeste. I fuck them up until they are as broken as me.

It's okay, Tommy. I'd rather be broken with you than whole alone.

NOTES:

Celeste's name and character can be changed if you want

Celeste does not take the place of Grace, even though I thoroughly despised Grace, she is important to the plot and needs to stay

Is a slowish burn, so they don't get together straight away but at a natural pace

Celeste is very strong and intelligent despite not having a lot when she was younger.

She is also illiterate

The ending of the story is up to you
