TO SAY THAT MELAINA ARRIVED ON EARTH AT THE PERFECT TIME WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT.
As she stepped out of the glimmering white portal, she was immediately hit in the face with a whirlwind of blackened dirt. A gale of wind slammed into her lithe body and almost sent her falling onto the sandy floor, unprepared for the sheer force of the blow. Dark hair whipping against her ivory skin so violently that she could barely see, not aided by the fact that a sandstorm also obscured her vision.
She barely managed to hear the strident sound of some kind of vehicle echoing into the air over her forced coughs, heaving to get the soil out of her lungs. Everything was so dark and loud, overwhelming her senses and leaving her completely discombobulated. A frightening turn of events compared to the glimmering oasis she just left behind.
Wiping at her irritated eyes with the pads of her hands, she forced her eyes open. Gazing out through the fog and finally managing to cast a glance at the world she now found herself on.
She saw that she was standing on Nevadan soil, a burning beige desert that would be charring blisters into her exposed feet if not were it for the silver moon that hung in the night sky. Enshrouding her in darkness, hiding her from the havoc that raged on only meters away from where she stood.
To her left, was a giant sinkhole. A plane of cracked and falling land that Melaina assumed used to be a building of some sort. Sinking into the earth with the force of Gaia, unforgiving and momentous as it brought down the tall structure that used to stand there with ease.
But to Melaina's right, were two cars that roared down the dark road that extended as far as her eyes could see. Engines echoing into the night as they chased after one another. And on the back of the leading car, was none other than the infamous Loki. Donning his typical emerald and onyx garments, clutching at a golden scepter as he rode off into the night.
Her eyes narrowed in anger as a mighty helicopter too flew in the air, joining the fight that she obviously managed to drop in on. Its rotating blades the reason for the harsh smog that hung in the air. She watched as the Nordic God extended the scepter upwards and fired a marvelous sapphire beam of pure power at the plane. Incinerating it instantly and sending it spiraling down into the desert plains. Shaking the earth as it made contact.
Still gazing on with piqued interest, she watched as an ebony skinned man pulled himself from the carnage, holding up his weapon and firing it at the retreating vehicle. Unable to make successful contact as they drove off into the desert.
Turning her head towards her target, she saw Loki's car fade into the distance. She almost gave into the urge that told her to follow after him, to descend on him like a Fury and take him back up to Olympus no matter how much he squealed.
But she knew that it would foolish of her to follow after him, especially given that she now knew he was actually causing problems on earth. That Hermes wasn't up to his usual trickster self and fabricating a lie just to be cynical. And he had also recruited some sort of team that were assisting in his plans, making her task that much more intricate.
But this battle gave Melaina an opportunity. Loki had made enemies, and as the saying went, thy enemy of my enemy is my friend. Leaving her with a perfect opening to converse with these Earthlings and use them to get to Loki and his brother Thor. To get the bothersome brothers and return them to their subpar planet and leave Earth be. And she would do exactly that, she would complete her mission by whatever means necessary.
She would not fail the Gods.
Portaling over to the man who stood amongst the carnage that used to be a helicopter, she watched as he spoke into some small device. Critically gazing over his harsh countenance, frowning as she noticed that one of his icily cold eyes was covered by a fabric eyepiece, an unusual look for such modern times. His dark attire slightly reflecting under the soft moonbeams, face completely stoic as his baritone voice sounded into the night.
"As of right now." He spoke, words dripping with disdain. "We are at war."
She heard inaudible voices echo from the device that he lowered away from his face. Eyes trained on the road that Loki escaped on with unmatched acrimony. Stony and silent, not noticing the women who silently sidled up behind him.
"And with whom may that be?"
At her words, Fury whirled around with his gun aimed at her forehead. Suprise and anger swirling with equal measure in his dark eyes. Well, Melaina assumed both of his eyes due to the leather eyepatch. A look she hadn't seen since the late 1600's worn by none other than pirates.
"Who the fuck do you think you are?" Fury snarled, cocking the gun threateningly.
Melaina smirked at his vehement scowl, raising her brow at him mockingly. Scoffing as she regarded his hardened features. "That's no way to talk to a God."
"Oh, so you're with that Loki then." He growled, taking a taunting step forward and holding the gun against her soft ivory skin. Unaware that his feeble actions would do her no harm.
"I think not." Her face contorted in repulsion. "That accusation itself is blasphemous, I'll have you know."
"If you aren't with Loki, then who the hell are you?" He questioned, curiosity hiding behind his acrimonious front. Barely visible to those who had not been around to help establish human nature all those years ago.
Melaina lips curled upwards at his question, like a viper ready to pounce. "My name is Melaina. I'm the Greek Goddess of Darkness and I have been sent to Earth by my brethren to deal with your little Asgardian problem."
"W—What? A Greek God?" He questioned, confusion overwhelming his features.
"Yes, you heard correctly." Melaina grinned. "The Olympians and Titans. Surely you know them?"
"That's impossible."
"Oh really?" She cocked an eyebrow mockingly. "Did you not just have an Asgardian God incinerate your helicopter with a sapphire weapon that's obviously not of this world?"
Scowling at her words, Fury bit back. "And why would you want to help us?"
"Because the Norse Gods think they are almighty and powerful, when in reality it has always been the Greeks that held the real power." She informed him, a shred of poorly concealed distaste tainting her tone. "Also because we are sworn to protect the Earthlings from outer worldly problems if deemed necessary."
Fury's brows furrowed conflictingly at her words, but he remained obstinate with holding the firearm to her head. "How do I know that you won't deal with Loki and plunge our world into a war of your own?"
"Um, Mr..." She trailed off, cocking her brow quizzically.
"Fury, Nick Fury." He spat the words like they were acid on his tongue. Face completely devoid of emotion.
"Well Mr. Fury, wars haven't been my thing for quite a long time. That is rather my cousin's area of expertise, Ares." She replied satirically. "But think about it Mr. Fury, have you wondered why you have never heard from the Greek Gods? I have been alive for as long as the planet you call Earth has existed. If we truly wanted to rule, we would have taken it many millennia ago."
Fury spent a moment processing her words, looking for gaps in her story. Trying to find any fragment of evidence to prove her lies. Fear, caution and dread entwining to create a motley of an emotion he could not describe if asked. Characterized by the constant feeling of teetering on the edge of a plank. Too scared to take the plunge into the murky water, afraid of the danger that lurked beneath. Unsure if Melaina was a shark of a dolphin. A beast prepared to kill or a creature willing to offer aid.
"Where did you even come from?" He asked after a minute of thinking.
"Olympus, a planet far far away." She replied before lifting a finger tentatively and pushing the gun away from her face with little resistance. Recognizing the slight softening of emotion in his dark eye. Not enough that he would immediately trust her and call her his best friend for life, but enough for her not to warrant a bullet in the brain.
Well, at least she hoped so.
"What are the terms of this agreement? You help fight Loki, then what?" He questioned, slipping the firearm back into its holster.
"Then I'll be on my merry way back home." She answered swiftly. "I'll help you fight Loki, I'll use my own powers to help beat the God that has brought war upon your planet and leave as soon as the task is done. And all I ask in return is that my God status is kept away from the press."
"And how, pray tell, am I supposed to do that?" He frowned exasperatedly.
"You seem to be a smart man, Mr. Fury. I'll leave that one up to you." She answered, patting his shoulder patronizingly before walking away. Leaving an angered Nicholas Fury in her wake.
"And where do you think you are going?" He bellowed to her retreating figure.
"Well, you do plan on getting out of here, correct?" She commented as Fury's brows sloped downwards in pure confusion. "Then you will be needing some transport since your helicopter is quite obviously of no use anymore."
Fury turned his gaze to the mangled mess that was his helicopter. Wincing as he took in the broken tail and burning engine, reluctantly having to agree that his way out of the Nevadan desert was definitely compromised and in some need of reevaluation.
"And what means of transport are you thinking of, Melaina?" He queried, turning back around with an expectant look on his face.
An arrogant smirk pulled at her roseate lips, emerald eyes glinting impishly as she flicked her wrist. Instantly a raging black flame began to glow by her side, radiating pure darkness as it flickered with catastrophic allure. Leaving Fury's mouth dropping open wide as he observed something he could only deem as magic occurring right before his very eyes.
"One of my own." She grinned. "Now tell me where I am taking us."
Fury, still rendered completely shocked at the sight before him, a Greek Goddess who claimed to be the Goddess of shadows descended on him immediately after his S.H.I.E.L.D base was blown up by an Asgardian God. A story that seemed unfathomable to even the most crazed, and yet he had to somehow come to terms with these strange turns of events. But at that moment, he had only managed utter one thing. And that was:
"Fucking hell."
