Collateral

Cordelia Vasenya was not born to rule.
A shadow in her own life, she was taught to whittle her words until they cut sharp as a knife, to string pretty phrases together like pearls on a line, to find the delicate balance between deception and truth — between death and duty.
No, she was not born to rule — with scorching starlight in her veins, she was born to listen. To stand at her Queen-sister's side and to be there always, ever the dagger in the dark, her sworn protector; the shadow moon to her sister's eternal sun.
While Brienna waged battles of politics and power from her ivory throne, Cordelia ended them from within the malignant halls of the Atalian palace — putting an end to internal revolt and revolution before it ever had a chance to fester. A militant planet raised on war and blood for blood, she had never known any truth other than that of subtle violence and false peace; a power struggle between past and future, between the old gods and the new.
Despite the silver thread that bound her to a goddess forgotten by their world, Cordelia would always count herself beside her sister — and if that meant weaponizing the chasm of gentle light that sparked between her fingers and forsaking the traditions of their ancestors, then so be it.
Anakin Skywalker was not born to be quiet.
Since the moment the cosmic light of the universe erupted in his veins, he had been groomed for greatness. The salvation of the Jedi, they called him. The chosen one, they ordained him. He wished the burden wasn't so heavy — he wished the crown had been his choice.
The restless child of the prophecy, Anakin was lost and desperately searching for something to make him whole — to fill the cavity in his chest where his heart had once been, where the Jedi had carved it out. After ten years of searching, he believed he would never find it until he met the sharp-tongued and bright-eyed princess of Atala.
He doesn't understand her disdain, or why she tensed every time his lightsaber was in sight. She doesn't understand his sincere kindness, or why he seems bent on earning her friendship — all she knew for certain was that something in her sang to something in him, and whether it was as allies, enemies, or something more, they were destined to find each other.
But when war came, metal clad and dark veiled, Cordelia found herself pitted against everything she had once known — and questioning every twisted truth she had ever been told, every lie she had ignorantly believed.
Perhaps the Republic was worth saving, perhaps the Jedi were not as evil as she had been taught — perhaps the flutter in her chest whenever Anakin looked at her was not something to be feared, something to fight against.
Standing on the precipice of galaxy-wide destruction, the only solace they found was in each other. As war raged around them and more of their universe was drenched in blaster fire and broken bodies, Cordelia and Anakin found peace in each other — in an indestructible love that no war could taint.
Little did they know, a shadow moved within the darkness, twisting and pulling their threads of fate. Little did they know that their burning star-crossed hearts were not the result of hard-fought perseverance, but the cosmic design of fate — a cruel destiny a millennium in the making, a force that would see them succeed in their purpose, or die trying.
Two were destined to be one; as friends, as lovers, as enemies. With or without the other, they had a prophecy to fulfill.
Evil had cast its shadow over their galaxy, their home, their love — and as chaos, tragedy and grief darkened their lives, Cordelia and Anakin fought harder than ever to hold on to each other when the cacophonic tide of war threatened to tear them apart.
Until finally, they could not hold on any longer.
Lost and searching once more, everything has fallen apart as the dark shadow of the Empire rises from the ashes of their love. Lost and searching, desperate and dying, Cordelia knows what she must do, but sometimes the price of salvation is everything you are — and with her heart already given away long ago to a boy who can now barely remember her name, she has nothing left to bargain with.
All she can do now is resurrect what was once dead, trade a living life for a life lost, and pray the gods she had forsaken were with her.
