01. - AS I LAY DYING

un. — runaway!

The night was bleak and gloomy, icy winds plaguing the air on the strange night. Trees rustled in the breeze and the wind howled into the night, but not a trace of life could be found on that old road apart from the figure of a young girl.

Letha wrapped her coat tighter around her small, shivering frame, the weight of her bags making her journey slower. She flinched at every little noise as she walked along the deserted road that led out of Mystic Falls. It was a tough choice, but a necessary one. Everybody was lying to her, her family, her friends — who could she turn to?

She'd thought she'd gone mad when she noticed the first inky black line drawn on the inside of her right wrist. Then more started appearing, Letha hadn't understood what they had meant at the time but made sure to redraw the permanent marker every time it faded. It was only when the lines suddenly made a tally she started to figure out what was happening. Letha had been obsessed with Doctor Who for a few years and she could vaguely remember the creatures that they forgot every time they looked away, so to know that they'd looked at them, the characters would draw tally's on their bodies.

That was when she first noticed the blanks in her memories. The times when the idea that she'd been at home all night were in her brain, yet she couldn't recall what she'd been doing, or when her mind would simply be blank of the past few hours.

Then the notes started appearing. Her messy handwriting attached to random scraps of paper, warning her not to trust anyone, yet she could never recall writing them.

One note she received from herself sent chills down her spine and made her realise she needed to get out of town, 'can't trust anyone, not even Jeremy and Elena!!'

So, she bided her time, all smiles and laughter while she secretly started stashing her money and packing. Letha even managed to buy some vervain the note she received about it being hastily written, she wasn't sure what she was actually suppose to do with the plant, so she placed it in the little locket part of her anklet. Nobody had since tried to remove her memories and for that she was glad, she had no idea how she was suppose to act in what she assumed to be the trance like state she was being put in.

All she truly wanted was for her life to go back to normal.

Since that obviously wasn't going to happen in Mystic Falls, she waited until Elena, Jenna and Jeremy were off doing god knows what, and checked herself into a small inn on the other side of town. She dyed her hair a light caramel shade of brown, vastly different from the deep chocolate brown that she had shared with her siblings. Before waiting a few days to get the hell out of dodge.

Not wanting to risk being followed, she couldn't get a bus out of town, and she'd failed her drivers test horrendously (three times). So, she saw her only options being to walk out of town and perhaps hitchhike when she was far enough away.

She was starting to regret that plan.

It was dark and cold, the woods seemingly more eerie now she knew that something could be lurking out there. Her heart was pounding out of her chest and she found herself chanting in her head the billions of reasons on why she couldn't go back. They'd taken who she was and twisted it into some puppet, no more would she allow that.

Letha decided to be optimistic about her situation, she had enough money to tide her over for awhile (money from her job and what her parents had left her). So, she could start over wherever she wanted, New York, Atlanta, maybe even New Orleans. The choice was her's once again.

The purr of an engine had her stiffening with fear, though she willed her feet to press onwards, the crunching of gravel beneath her feet casting a much more sinister undertone now. She let a breath of relief leave her lungs as the car drove straight past her, only to freeze in fear as the car stopped a few meters ahead of her.

She remained rooted to the spot as the passenger door opened and a tall figure strode out from it, the driver casually getting out and leaning on the car in what she could only describe a boredom, "Letha?" Her fingers clenched around the straps of her backpack till her knuckles turned white as she recognised the voice of her sisters boyfriend, Stefan Salvatore, "What the hell? Everyone's been looking for you."

He started to get closer to her, his steps like thunder in her mind. Her fight or flight response kicked in and she found herself doing both, she aimed a rather hard punch at his nose that probably hurt her more than him, and then ran off into the darkened woodland, her airy voice calling out an apology, "Sorry!"

Letha batted the stray branches away from her face, flinching as one of them scratched her neck, the scarlet blood blooming to the surface and contrasting against the porcelain of her skin. She muttered a few 'ouches' tears brimming in her eyes. She'd literally been able to see the Mystic Falls sign, she was so close to freedom.

"And who might you be, love?" A startled scream escaped her lips as she bumped into the figure she'd seen next to the car. His cold arms wrapping around her waist as he steadied her, his pink lips pulled into a sinister smirk. The moonlight rained down his his roguish features, his blue eyes shining with untamed chaos and excitement.

Letha threw herself around him as though his touch had burned her, spinning around she came face to face with Stefan Salvatore. Except it didn't really seem like him, "Stefan?" He voice cracked ever so slightly. His leafy green eyes were surrounded by blackness, red veins crawling out from under them like a spider web. Her sisters boyfriends mouth was opened into a snarl, revealing two pearly white fangs extending from his teeth.

She was trapped between two monsters.

"I wouldn't run again, sweetheart. He enjoys the chase." The strange man whispered in her ear, his finger swiping at the small amount of blood on her neck, revealing a superficial wound. He covered her neck with her jacket, Stefan seemingly snapping out of his trance as he watched the man lick the blood off of his finger, "Who is she to you, Ripper? And I wouldn't try to lie."

"She's Letha Gilbert, Elena and Jeremy's sister."

The man spun her around, his hands tight on her shoulders, she made sure to avoid eye contact, her mind running a million miles a minute, "Well, well, well. You weren't planning on coming after me were you?"

She scrunched her eyebrows up, squinting at him, "Why would I be going after you?"

He searched her big brown eyes for any trace of a lie, a satisfied smile spreading across his face that very much reminded her of the grinch. Tears sprang in the corner of her eyes, maybe she would have been better off staying at home. Though how many people in town were just like Stefan? How many people in the world? "Well then, it seems that you are heading in the same direction as us. We'll give you a ride."

Before she could decline, he lifted her over his shoulder in a fireman's hold. Seemingly uncaring of her flailing limbs and the curses that left her mouth, "Klaus, just leave her here!" Strange name.

Stefan's voice rang out as he trailed behind them irritably, "Yes, what he said! I like walking, exercise, I really don't need a ride." She rambled on, pushing her thick mane of hair from her face.

The man ignored her placing her in the passenger seat, Stefan grumbling as he got in the back. When she reached for the door handle, she found the child locks had been placed on and pouted.

"Don't look so glum, love." The man — Klaus — put the car into gear and got driving again, "it's not like you have much to go back to anyway." Her brows furrowed in confusion, the car going past the leaving Mystic Falls sign, her old life left behind in the dust.

She had a feeling her life away from Mystic Falls wasn't going to be normal either.

AUTHORS NOTE!
First chapter is here! Whatcha guys think, I love hearing your feedback!

If you couldn't tell, Letha doesn't know that Jenna and John are dead and that Elena is 'dead'. I'm still decided on whether or not to have Klaus tell her yet, opinions?

Also kinda feeling like just keeping Jenna alive cause she's baby.
