         Once a pogue, always a pogue. That's what they say, right? Even when you didn't start out that way?

The kids who live in the Cut are born to inherit the misfortune of the people who came before them, heirs and heiresses to a life spent sharing the weight and dreaming of the day when they don't have to. They, like their parents, work hard and make the best of what they've been given, reveling in summer days spent at the beach, pretending they're anybody but themselves for just a moment in time. And for those that happen to find themselves down on their luck, the Cut, and it's children alike, welcome them with open arms.

         The kids found on Figure Eight are a different story. Many don't trouble themselves with the problems of Pogues, or anyone else for that matter, because they have "more important" things to worry about. They're colder than the mansions they grow up in and likely just as lonely too.

         Murphy McAllister isn't a Pogue. Or, she didn't used to be, at least. At one point, she was one of those spoiled kids living a cushy life on Figure Eight, with no other worry than what outfit to wear or what after-school activity to partake in. She never ventured much farther than the end of her own polished community, and the dregs of the Cut were no exception. But a lot can change in a few years. One minute she's living a dream and the next, she's motherless, dirt-poor, and supporting a father unable to pick his drunk-ass off the floor.

Now, Murphy is stuck navigating a world she never thought she'd have to survive in—a world where her once-bright future is clouded by pain of the past, financial struggle, and a desperate need to belong somewhere. With no real family or future ahead, Murphy feels herself losing touch with who she's supposed to be. She a Pogue, by circumstance of course, but her heart still yearns for the privileges and comforts she once knew. Even if she knows deep down that life on Figure Eight is out of her reach now.

In the midst of this new, gritty life, she crosses paths with John B., Kiara, Pope, and JJ. They, too, are struggling to find their place in a world that seems to constantly push them down. But for all their differences, they share a common bond: a hunger for something more. As they get drawn into the mystery of the Royal Merchant wreck and the treasure that could change everything, Murphy finds herself torn between her old world—where the promise of a better life still lingers like a ghost—and the new world, where loyalty, friendship, and a sense of belonging are more valuable than anything money can buy.

But as secrets begin to surface, both about the treasure and her own past, Murphy must confront who she really is—and who she wants to be. Is she still the privileged girl from Figure Eight, or has she truly become one of the Pogues, with everything that means? And more importantly, does she have the strength to survive the coming storm that threatens to take everything from her again?

i think this is the fast i've ever created any fic ever, in the 10 years (crazy i know), i've been on this app, and i have to say i am pretty proud (except for the fact that there are probably a lot of spelling/grammar mistakes)

a shoutout to hazzawckd and tiishas for fueling my obx obsession again, even if inadvertently, bc i was def missing out.

this book will take place primarily in season 1, but will likely go into season 2 (maybe season 3-4, but i need to rewatch). it's been a while since i watched the show, so i am bound to get some information wrong, so if you see something, just ignore it 💖
