Somewhere near the Austrian border
. ☾ .
As the engine of the motorbike roars into the dark night, Allie savors the ounce of tranquility that she has been awarded. Amongst the noise of the engine, she can still hear the wind that hurtles towards her and pushes her dark hair from her face. The trees around her disappear from her vision as fast as they came into it. But as soon as one goes, another one replaces it like clockwork. The road in front of her stretches onward, curving with the side of the hill that she is riding on.
If this is what freedom is, she craves it.
Into the night they ride, the little baby is fast asleep in her sidecar whilst Allie focuses on the long road ahead. Distance is all that matters now. Distance away from HYDRA, away from the fight and away from her past.
And Allie isn't going to stop for anything. Even if the road is being burnt down by a fire, she would bear the pain and drive through the scorching flames. No amount of agony will ever make her go back to HYDRA. At least not willingly.
She looks at the fuel gauge and frowns, the bike is running low but they should make it into the next town before they run out of fuel. But where is she going to get the money for fuel? They also need a place for the night while she figures out what the hell that she is going to do. And what the hell is she going to do about the baby?
Allie quickly averts her eyes to the sidecar and sees that the baby has fallen asleep, the little rise and fall of her chest indicating that she still, in fact, is alive. She then turns her gaze back to the road and lets out a sigh of relief when she sees that the closest town is only 5 kilometers away.
Before she even realizes, she has pulled up outside of a pub on the main street. She laboriously pulls herself off of the bike and stretches her stiff body. As she regains movement in her limbs, she looks around the small town and tries to note places that could offer the two of them some shelter, food or fuel. The dim light posts barely light up the street but from what she can see is that down the road there is a fairly ramshackled inn that would more than likely have room to spare for the night.
Through the darkness, the old wooden exterior of the inn is apparent. Small chips and dents showcase the weathering it has endured. A once beautiful and lively porch is now barely holding itself together as a result of the lack of resources available. The beige curtains had been drawn, covering the eyes of the outside world from peering in. 'It's good enough for the night,' she thinks to herself as she walks over and kneels by the baby.
Her bright blue-green eyes were open and a small frown played at her face. Despite all that the baby had gone through in the last 24 hours, her face glowed and as Allie leaned closer, a melodious laugh escaped her lips. A smile grew on Allie's own face as she reached her hand out to the baby and felt it's miniature fingers wrap around hers. How this baby is still alive after everything that happened today is a miracle. It is rewarding enough to Allie that she was able to help another innocent person escape the hands-off HYDRA but to see the purity and angelicness of this child is another blessing altogether.
Allie lifts her gaze up from the child and looks for a gas station so that she can fill up the motorbike for tomorrow but she spots nothing in this street. Instead, she finds a small gas can and some clear tubing by the side of a hardware store further up the street.
"You must have to be the luckiest charm I have ever had!" Allie laughs as she lifts the child out of the sidecar and holds it against her chest. She then slowly walks over to the hardware store and collects the two items before walking up to the closest car on the street. She checks that the street is empty before she drops the can and tubing by her side and then takes a seat herself on the curb.
She coos as she places the silent baby down onto the concrete and then turns her focus to the car. She twists the fuel tank open and the smell of petrol fills up the air around her. She then pulls the knife from her thigh and quickly cuts the tubing in half. She pushes the two tubes into the tank and places one of the tubes inside the gas can. She wipes the end of the other tubing against her HYDRA uniform, noting that she really should get rid of it.
She takes a deep breath and then pulls the tubing up to her lips and blows as hard as she can into it. For a few seconds, she is rewarded with nothing but then she slowly sees the fuel trickle down the tubing and into the gas can. Once she has run out of air, she quickly pulls the tubing away from her mouth and takes another deep breath before blowing into it again.
After a while, the gas can is full of stolen fuel and Allie hurridly screws the lid back on the black car. She throws the tubing into a nearby bin and then carries the baby and the can over to the motorbike. She fills the bike back up with fuel and checks the gauge which now shows that she should hopefully be able to drive a couple of hours tomorrow before she will need to fill the tank back up.
Allie and the baby make their way over to the inn, walking along the cracked cobblestone pathway and onto the wooden porch of the lodge. She raps her knuckles on the door and anxiously waits for someone to answer.
Much to her relief, an older woman comes to the door and ushers them inside with a smile. "Komm herein, Komm herein! / Come in, Come in! " She says as she opens the wooden door for the two of them. As soon as they walk inside the lobby, they are greeted with the smell of a roast dinner and the warmth of a heater. Luxuries which neither of them has ever experienced.
"Suchen Sie heute ein Zimmer? / Are you looking for a room tonight? " The lady asks with a warm smile, causing her dark eyes to crinkle at the corners. Her short dark hair bobs as she makes her way behind the entrance desk which she can barely peer over due to her short height. The woman would seem to be in her late 40's or early 50's and she has a motherly aura surrounding her as she makes faces at the baby that is clinging to Allie's chest.
"Ja, tue ich, aber ich habe kein Geld! Ich brauche dringend einen Platz für heute Nacht, damit mein Baby und ich mich endlich richtig ausruhen können. /Yes, I am, but I have no money! I desperately need to find a place just for tonight so that my baby and I can finally rest properly! " Allie begs as she cradles the baby who is starting to make a fuss. The lady looks at the two with a frown, obviously not recognizing the HYDRA uniform or choosing not to speak about it.
"Ich habe ein Zimmer, das Sie für die Nacht nutzen könnten. Es ist aber nicht viel. / I do have a room that you could use for the night. But it is not much. " She says, still upholding her warm smile. Allie does not hold back the gleeful smile that is overtaking her own face and she grasps the lady's hand gently.
" Vielen Dank! Ich wieß nicht wie ich ihre großzügigkeit züruckzahlen kann!/ Thank you very much! I do not know how to repay your generosity!" She says gratefully. The woman places her own hand over Allie's and shakes her head at her.
"Es ist das Mindeste, was ich tun könnte! / It's the least I could do! " She responds as she begins to lead the two up to the room.

As Allie sits on the bed of her room, she contemplates what she is going to do next. She looks at the files spread out in front of her with a frown on her face as her eyes glaze over the words on the pages. If she got this information to the right people, HYDRA could be taken down for good. That could be a start in wiping away some of the red from her ledger. If she did get this to the right person, she could perhaps start to move on from all of the things that HYDRA have made her do.
But who could she trust with this information? Who would see the end of an era by completely destroying HYDRA rather than taking this information and replacing them? She is sure that Captain America would be the former but he does not make decisions on behalf of his country. Sure, Steve is high up in their ranks but this information would have to be passed by the top authorities, and powerful men only want to become more powerful.
The English and French government are struggling so they would be of little use. Paris is still completely controlled by nazi's and that's the capital of France! Which leaves just one other government, the American's.
If she doesn't give anyone these files and just burns them, they will be lost forever. She doesn't know if HYDRA has any copies of them but she is pretty sure that they don't which means that it will take them some time before they regain this information. But by doing that she is taking the easy route out. She would be making all of the prisoners who died at HYDRA's deaths in vain.
And what the hell does she do about the baby?
She looks over to the crib that the lady, whose name is Edith, set up for her and watches as she sleeps. Allie is almost certain that this is the baby of the woman that Schmidt shot in front of Allie. The woman who she had killed.
Guilt creeps its way up into Allie's thoughts and she can't help the frown that pulls at her lips. This baby deserves so much more than what she has been given, and most of that is Allie's fault. She has to make amends for making the child an orphan. There is no way that she can look after a kid, especially if she is to go to an American camp and hand herself over. She is going to have to give this baby over to an orphanage or leave her on someone's doorstep. But she doesn't want to hand the little girl over to just any random family. She wants to give her to someone that will actually look after her and love her like their own.
A gentle knock on the door breaks Allie from her thoughts and she quickly pushes all the files on the bed into her backpack before opening the door. Edith stands there with a plate of roast beef in her hands and a smile on her face.
"Hier ist ein Abendessen aufs Haus! / Here is a dinner on the house! " She speaks warmly as she hands the plate over to Allie.
"Ich danke dir sehr! Aber das isrt nicht nötig! / Thank you very much! But you did not have to!" Allie says graciously as she places the meal on the small bedside table. She can't believe how much this woman is doing for them, first letting them stay for free and then giving them food! If there were more people like this in the world, there would be no war.
" Es ist kein Problem! Wie findest du das Zimmer? / It wasn't a problem! How are you finding the room? " Edith asks as she walks over to the baby's crib and watches the girl sleep. Sure, this room wasn't as nice as the one that she had stayed at in New York but it is still so much nicer than her room at HYDRA. The bed has a comfortable mattress and there was enough space for her to walk around and there was enough space for her to place her clothes in if she had some.
"Ich könnte mir nichts Besseres wünschen! / I couldn't ask for anything better! " She responds as she walks on the wooden floor over to Edith. "Hast du ein eigenes Kind/ Do you have children of your own?" She asks as she looks down at the baby who is sound asleep.
"Das Leben hat mir dieses Vergnügen noch nicht gewährt. / Life has not granted me that pleasure yet. " She replies with a sad smile. "Aber hoffentlich eines Tages. / But hopefully one day." She continues.
"Es tut mir Leid! / I'm sorry! " Allie says awkwardly but Edith just waves her off. "Sie haben nichts zu bedauern! / You have nothing to be sorry for! "
"Wissen Sie, wo das Lager der Amerikaner ist? / Do you know where the American's camp is? " Allie questions as Edith turns to leave the room. Edith gives her a funny look but she answers anyway. " Es ist tatsächlich in der Nähe, vielleicht ein oder zwei Stunden nach Osten. / It's actually nearby, maybe an hour or two to the east. "
"Danke, gute Nacht! / Thank you, goodnight! " She says with a smile and Edith returns it before closing the door. Now Allie has a fair idea about what to do.
. ☾ .
It's 4 o'clock in the morning and if Allie wants to make it to the American base before all of the soldiers are up and ready to gun her down, she has to leave now. She hastily makes up the room that she slept in last night and places the nearly clean plate of food back on the bedside table. She quickly packs her bag back up, gathering the files and placing them back inside, and then puts the bag by the door.
She looks over to the peaceful baby and smiles. This is going to be the last time she sees her. At least she knows that she is going to be in a nice home with a seemingly lovely lady. She gently runs her fingers over her rosy little cheeks and can't help but let a bittersweet smile overcome her lips.
She didn't know the baby for long but she can't deny that it has been a welcome companion. She barely ever cried once they got away from the base and she didn't wake her up at all last night. Even though she doesn't talk she reminded Allie of how life can be beautiful. How people do deserve saving.
Allie quickly walks over to the small desk that is in the corner of the room and grabs a piece of paper and a pen. She hurridly scrawls out a message.
Liebe Edith, / Dear Edith,
Es tut mir so leid, dass ich Sie in dieser Position gelassen habe, aber ich kann mich nicht mehr um mein Baby kümmern und es hört sich an, als ob Sie eine großartige Mutter wären. / I am so sorry to leave you in this position but I can't look after my baby anymore and it sounds like you would be a great mother.
Wenn Sie sich nicht um sie kümmern können, geben Sie sie bitte einer geeigneten Familie, die sie wie Ihre eigene lieben wird. / If you can't look after her please give her to a suitable family that will love her like their own.
Sie heißt Colleen. / Her name is Colleen.
She finishes writing and wipes the single tear that has fallen from her eye. Maybe this Colleen will get a better chance at life than her mother did. She then places the note inside of Colleen's crib and stares at the baby one more time.
" Auf Wiedersehen meine Schönheit. / Goodbye, my beauty. " She whispers as she places a delicate kiss on her forehead. She then grabs her bag at the door before sneaking out of the room.
She silently makes her way down the stairs and out of the house. Thankfully, her motorbike is still parked on the other side of the road and she hurriedly makes her way over to it. She shoves her keys into the ignition and hears the familiar roar of the engine. She gets onto the bike and places the backpack on her back properly before leaning forward and placing her hands on the handlebar. Without a second thought, she pushes forward on the accelerator and feels the bike go barreling forward.
Once again, the town goes flying by, out of her vision as she rides away.
Goodbye, my beauty.
