"Clawd was totally in the doghouse with Draculaura. And now I was about to find out that he had a lot to live up to."
The soft hum of the fluorescent lights echoed in the tiled girls' bathroom as Draculaura stood by the sinks her friends gathered around her, offering support in their own ways. Cleon, after checking to ensure the coast was clear, leaned casually against the counter, his tall frame giving the room an unexpected sense of safety.
Frankie and Zeraphine were at Draculaura's side, rubbing gentle circles on her back as she sniffled. Her mascara, luckily waterproof, remained intact despite her teary breakdown.
"Aw, maybe I'm hoping for too much," Draculaura said, her voice shaky but soft. "It's just that Valentine's Day brings back so many memories for me." She offered a bittersweet smile. "But you ghouls all know that story."
Frankie tilted her head curiously, glancing between the others. Before she could speak, Cleon let out a low groan. "Yes," he said, rubbing his temples as if bracing for impact.
Next to him, Clawdeen crossed her arms and nodded. "Heard it a thousand times," she muttered, her voice dripping with sibling exasperation.
Zeraphine, however, sighed dramatically, her snakes twitching as she interjected with her own flair. "If I hear it one more time, I'm gonna write it down, publish it, and retire on the royalties." She clasped her hands together, adding with mock seriousness, "It'll be a bestseller titled 'The Tale That Never Dies'—literally.'"
Frankie stifled a giggle but turned to Draculaura, her expression earnest. "I haven't. I want to hear it," she said, her enthusiasm genuine.
Zeraphine's eyes widened in horror as she shook her head at Frankie, mouthing a desperate, "No."
Draculaura, seemingly energized by the offer, hesitated for a moment. "Oh, I don't really want to get into it now," she said, a glimmer of coy reluctance in her tone.
Frankie smiled, shrugging. "Oh, okay. Never mind."
Zeraphine exhaled a loud sigh of relief, even giving a playful thumbs-up behind Draculaura's back.
But just as the tension eased, Draculaura's face lit up with glee, her fangs glinting in the fluorescent light. "Well, fine, if you're gonna twist my arm!"
The room was instantly filled with groans.
"Here we go," Cleon muttered, rolling his eyes good-naturedly.
"It is the most romantic story ever told!" Draculaura began, clasping her hands dramatically to her heart. "And it all started 400 years ago at my old school. Like, vampire old."
As Draculaura launched into her tale, Zeraphine leaned closer to Cleon, whispering in a stage voice, "I told you we should've just stayed in study hall." Cleon chuckled quietly, his eyes twinkling with amusement as Draculaura began weaving her legendary tale once again.

The ancient castle loomed high atop the jagged cliff, its towering spires piercing the velvety darkness of the night. Moonlight spilled across the stone walls, illuminating the intricate carvings and casting long, dramatic shadows. The castle's many stained-glass windows glowed faintly, reflecting the silvery light of the crescent moon that hung high in the inky sky.
Inside, the hallways bustled with life. Vampire students, their laughter echoing off the cold stone walls, chattered animatedly as they milled about, their elegant cloaks and modern attire blending seamlessly with the castle's gothic charm. The air buzzed with excitement, their otherworldly beauty and grace unmistakable.
Suddenly, the atmosphere shifted as a figure entered the grand hallway. Heads turned instinctively, conversations faltering as the mysterious presence commanded attention. The figure strode confidently, each step deliberate, the sound of polished boots clicking against the floor.
Clad in a sleek, tailored coat that billowed slightly with their movements, the figure wore dark sunglasses that seemed almost defiant under the dim interior lighting. Their smirk was subtle yet self-assured, as if they were privy to a secret the rest of the room could only dream of knowing.
Trailing behind them were three cloud-like forms, ethereal and shimmering faintly, each taking on the semblance of a face. The faces hovered with eerie grace, their expressions fluid and ever-shifting—smiling one moment, whispering the next. They exuded an otherworldly aura, their translucent edges fading into the shadows like mist on the wind. The figure moved through the hallway without hesitation, the air around them heavy with intrigue.
"His name was Valentine."
Valentine strolled through the bustling hallway, his every step exuding a magnetic charm that seemed almost tangible. His perfectly tousled hair glinted under the dim light, and his crimson-lined cape flowed effortlessly behind him like liquid silk. A confident smile graced his lips, sharp fangs just barely peeking through, adding to the allure of his presence.
As he passed a group of vampire girls, their conversation fell silent, replaced by breathless gasps. One by one, their knees buckled, and they swooned dramatically, falling into their lockers.
"And he was the most romantic monster ever."
As Valentine strutted confidently through the hallway, his sharp gaze fell upon a vampire girl leaning casually against her locker. Unlike the others who had swooned at his mere presence, this one seemed entirely unimpressed. She arched an elegant brow, her arms crossed, exuding an air of disinterest that only fuelled Valentine's need to win her over.
Intrigued, Valentine paused before her, tilting his sunglasses down just enough to reveal his piercing, glowing eyes. The soft crimson light radiating from them was hypnotic, a signature charm he rarely had to employ. The girl's initially defiant gaze faltered as her eyes mirrored his glow, a subtle but unmistakable shimmer of red overtaking her irises. Her posture relaxed, her lips parting slightly as the enchantment worked its way into her mind, shifting her aloof demeanour into one of quiet adoration.
"Every ghoul in school was fangs over heels for him."
Before Valentine could fully revel in the success of his latest charm, his attention was suddenly diverted. From across the hallway, he caught sight of Draculaura, and for the briefest moment, time seemed to slow.
She stood there, her radiant beauty practically glowing under the dim lights of the castle. Her pink-tinted skin seemed to shimmer with an ethereal glow, and her deep, expressive eyes locked onto his with a curious mixture of boldness and mystery. Her dark hair cascaded in soft waves down her back, a few strands catching the light in just the right way, making her appear almost otherworldly.
Valentine was momentarily stunned, his usual confident stride faltering. There was something about her presence, something that captivated him in a way no other had before. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been so taken by someone—her beauty was unlike anything he had ever encountered.
"But he chose me."
"We met at the Mock of Witch Trail."
Draculaura sat at a desk, her usual confident yet playful smile on her face, as she twirled a small witch hat atop her head. She was the picture of charm, her elegance contrasting perfectly with the playful innocence she radiated. Around her, the classroom was unusually quiet, the attention of every creature in the room fixed on Valentine.
Valentine stood at the front, his usual swagger softened by an almost poetic air. His voice was smooth, dripping with admiration as he addressed the class, "For no creature as fair as this, with eyes as bright as a full moon, with skin as soft as a ghost's kisses, and a heart as pure as snow, can possibly be a witch."
As he spoke, the three cloud-like figures floated up above him, swirling in the air in perfect harmony, their presence almost magical. In unison, they chimed in with a soft, melodic voice, "Not guilty."
The class was silent for a moment, the words hanging in the air like the lingering scent of something sweet and rare. Even the teacher, usually a stoic figure, seemed overwhelmed by the beauty of Valentine's words. He wiped a small tear from the corner of his eye, his voice trembling as he spoke, "That is so beautiful. You both get A's."
"He was amazing in every way. He wrote me the most exquisite poetry. And every moment we spent together was something out of a fairytale. And for my birthday he gave me the greatest gift I've ever received. He created a holiday just for me! Valentine's Day!"
Draculaura wandered through the transformed school halls, her eyes sparkling as they took in the elaborate decorations. Banners in shades of crimson and midnight black cascaded from the ceilings, and enchanted candles floated above, casting a soft, ethereal glow. Roses, both black and red, lined the walls, their petals shimmering faintly as if kissed by moonlight. The whole scene was breathtaking, and Draculaura couldn't help but feel a rush of awe and excitement.
Valentine appeared beside her, his confident stride as smooth as ever. He watched her for a moment, his lips curling into a charming smile at the sight of her wonder. "Happy Birthday, darlin'," he drawled, his voice low and velvety. His words made her turn to him, her smile lighting up the space between them.
"You have the biggest heart," Valentine continued, stepping closer, his gaze locking with hers. "Almost full of love." He smiled smugly as he lowered his glasses looking at Draculaura who was enchanted of the day, "Tonight, I shall make it mine, forever."
"But that night, my family had to flee, due to a misunderstanding with the locals."
"And I never saw him again," Draculaura finished, her voice tinged with sadness. Her friends reacted in a mix of emotions: Frankie shed a few tears, a gentle sniffle escaping her as she dabbed at her cheek. Clawdeen, meanwhile, was yawning conspicuously, clearly unimpressed by the tale. Cleon had slumped over against the wall, fast asleep, while Zeraphine, perched nearby, was distracted by one of her snakes playfully nuzzling her cheek.
"That was so sad." A tear rolled down Frankie's bolt, causing a small, sudden jolt of electricity that startled Cleon awake with a gasp. "I wasn't asleep, Mr. Rotter!" he blurted, looking around in panic before realizing where he was. His wide eyes settled on the group, and he muttered sheepishly, "Oh."
Zeraphine chuckled softly at her boyfriend's disorientation, the sound light and warm, making Cleon grin despite himself. Draculaura looked down, her fingers twisting nervously. "He was my first love, and he was everything I ever wanted," she said, her voice breaking slightly.
Cleon, now fully awake, raised a sceptical brow and replied bluntly, "You only knew him for a week."
Draculaura's face fell as she looked at the floor, her voice barely above a whisper. "It was supposed to be forever."
Clawdeen crossed her arms and gave an exaggerated shrug. "He seems pretty self-obsessed to me."
Zeraphine nodded in agreement, her snakes lightly hissing their concurrence. "I mean, I agree. He gave you a holiday, but he named it after himself. Isn't that a little... narcissistic?" she said, her tone playful yet pointed.
Draculaura waved off their comments with a dramatic sigh. "Whatever, it doesn't matter. What we had is all buried in the past. I'm with Clawd now. And he's just... different," she added, her words laced with uncertainty.
Zeraphine stepped forward, her movements graceful yet determined. Gently, she placed a hand under Draculaura's chin, lifting her head to meet her gaze. "Yes, he may be different and not as 'romantic' as Valentine," Zeraphine began, her tone soft yet filled with conviction. "But he's trying. Trying for you. He adores you and would do anything to make you happy. And as you said, Valentine was like a fantasy... but Clawd? He's real."
Her words seemed to reach Draculaura, who offered a faint smile in return. Cleon watched the moment unfold, his chest warming at the way Zeraphine's kindness shone through. "She's amazing," he thought, his grin widening.
Draculaura sighed deeply, a little of her sorrow lifting. "I'd better go get ready for my driver's test." With that, she turned and began walking off, her friends trailing after her.
