Asylum.
"Just be careful."
Athena looks at the eldest brother.
"The only thing that makes me more nervous than a pissed-off spirit is a pissed-off spirit of a psycho killer."
Athena nervously gulps. She follows her brothers. But the girl quickly stops, hearing wind blow past them. The siblings all turn around, seeing nothing.
They continue walking down the hall and enter another room. Athena looks at her homemade EMF in her hand. The sound of warbling is heard from the machine and it blinks red. Athena pulls her brows together. She lifts her head up, and sees the spirit of a woman. Her eye was missing and she was stumbling towards the girl.
"F-Fiddle..." Athena's voice gives out and she whimpers. "Guys?!"
Athena's back hits the wall behind her. "Help?!"
"Athy, get down!"
Athena crouches toward the ground and covers her head. Dean shoots the salt at the spirit and it dissipates. The girl takes her arms from over her head and pulls her brows together.
"Are you okay?" The brothers ask.
Athena nods her head, still stuck on the spirit "That was...weird." She huffs.
"Yeah, you're telling me." Dean grabs the duffel bag and starts toward the door.
Athena jigs after her brothers. "Uh—no, I mean it was weird that she didn't attack me."
"Well, it looked pretty aggro from where I was standing." Dean says.
"No, Athena's right." Sam agrees. "The spirit didn't hurt her. It didn't even try."
"So, if she didn't want to hurt me, then what did she want?" Athena looks at Sam.
Sounds of crying is heard in the room beside them. Athena looks into the door and her jaw goes slack. Dean enters the room first, his shotgun raised. Athena looks down at her EMF and doesn't see it glowing anymore.
Sam and Dean slowly approach bed that was in the corner on it's side.
"You've guys got it." Athena encourages from the other side of the room.
Sam grabs the bed and pulls it back, revealing a girl curled in the corner. She turns around with a gasp and looks at the brothers.
Athena raises her brows and walks toward Sam and Dean.
"It's all right. We're not going to hurt you." Dean softly reassures the blonde, he lowers the shotgun. "What's your name?"
The girl slowly stands up, "Katherine...Kat."
"Okay, I'm Dean. This is Sam and Athena."
Athena waves at the girl.
"What are you doing here?" Sam asks.
"Um...my boyfriend, Gavin—"
"Is he here?" Dean asks.
"S-Somewhere."
"He thought it would be fun, try and see some ghosts." Kat explains. "I thought it was all just...you know...pretend."
Athena cranes her neck forward. "Fun? Even if you think ghosts are pretend why would you come to an abandoned Asylum?" She looks around. "It's dirty, and...dark, scary, and dirty—I saw a dead rat!"
"Maybe we shouldn't insult the Asylum all these vengeful spirits died in, huh?" Dean pats the top of Athena's head.
The youngest Winchester's jaw goes slack. She didn't think about that.
"I-I wasn't insulting..." Athena tries to recover. She looks around with a strained smile on her lips. "I love the place!"
"Nice save." Sarcasm seeps through Sam's voice.
"I-I've seen things." Kat speaks, catching the sibling's attentions once again. "I heard Gavin scream, and—"
"All right, Kat, come on. Sam and Athena are gonna get you out of here. Then we're gonna find your boyfriend." Dean says.
"No, no." Kat disagrees. "I'm not gonna leave without Gavin. I'm coming with you."
"It's no joke." Dean says. "It's dangerous."
"That's why I've got to find him." Kat says.
"Young love." Athena sighs. "Never gets old."
"You're talking like you're an old lady—chill out." Sam huffs.
"All right, I guess we're gonna split up, then." Dean says.
Athena pulls her brows together, "I'm sorry? Do you not know where we are?" She motions around the building. "Why would we split up?"
"So, we can find Gavin quicker." Sam says, agreeing with Dean.
Athena nods her head. "Okay, you guys can do that and I will stay in this room." She sighs.
"Wrong."
Athena looks at her brothers, her mouth hanging open. "What?—"
"You're going with Sam." Dean says. "Kat's with me."
"I've got a bad feeling about this place." Athena says. "One of us is going to die."
Kat's eyes widen, "What?!"
"Athena!"
"What? I-I was joking!" Athena looks at the blonde. "I'm sorry, I was joking! I didn't think that was going to freak you out." She gives them a sheepish smile.
"You didn't think that was going to freak me out?" Kat raises her brows.
Athena presses her lips into a small smile.
"I'm sorry about her." Dean says. "She doesn't have any friends—"
"Hey!"
Dean looks at his sister and shrugs innocently, "What?"
☆
"Who are you?"
"I'm Athena and this is my little brother Sam." The girl nudges her elbow into Sam's arm.
Sam and Gavin look at the girl.
Athena clears her throat, "It's a...it was a joke—I was joking..." she looks at the ground.
Athena thought it was funny.
"We found your girlfriend." Sam says.
"Kat?"
"Do you have another girlfriend here we should worry about?" Athena snorts.
"Athy—"
"Sorry."
Sam helps Gavin onto his feet. "Is she alright?"
"She's worried about you." Sam informs the boy.
"Are you okay?" Athena asks, she holds up four fingers. "How many fingers am I holding up?"
"Five." Gavin answers.
"Oh." Athena winces. "The answers four. Congrats, you might have a concussion."
Gavin winces from the pain in his head. "I was running. I, uh, I think I fell."
"I feel you there." Athena sighs. "My advice...don't run."
"I usually don't run." Gavin says. "But, y'know my life was at risk."
Athena nods her head, "Oh, yeah—I get that."
"You were running from what?" Sam asks, trying to get back on track.
"There was—there was this girl." Gavin answers. "Her—her face...it was all messed up."
Athena raises her brows, "Wait—did this girl, did she try to hurt you?"
"What? No, she, uh..." Gavin trails off, feeling uncomfortable telling this to a child.
Sam cranes his neck forward, "She what?"
Gavin winces, "She kissed me."
Athena pulls her face back. "A ghost can do that?"
"She didn't hurt you physically thought, right?" Sam asks.
"Dude, she kissed me." Gavin scoffs. "I'm scarred for life."
"Could've been worse." Athena shrugs. "She could've ripped your tongue from your head—with her teeth." She laughs softly. "Can you imagine that?"
Athena looks at Gavin's disturbed expression and she presses her lips together. "I'm sorry."
"Do you remember anything else?" Athena asks the boy.
"She uh—actually she tried to whisper something in my ear." Gavin answers.
"What?"
"I don't know. I ran like hell." Gavin shrugs.
"You pulled a smooch and dash...except she smooched you—"
"Athena, what are you even talking about?—"
"Honestly? I do not know." Athena sticks her pinky in her ear. "But imma shut up now."
Sounds of screaming is heard down the hall. Gavin's eyes widen.
"That's Kat—That's Kat!" Gavin runs out of the room. Sam follows.
Athena sighs, "I thought we weren't gonna run anymore?" She jogs after Sam and Gavin.
The girl catches up to them and sees Dean trying to pry open a door.
"What's going on?"
"She's inside with one of them."
"Help me!" Kat cries.
"Kat!"
"Get me out of here!" Kat begs.
Athena stands at the door. "Miss Kat, it's not gonna hurt you!"
Kat continues to sob.
"Listen to me!" Athena's voice was loud but it was approachable and comforting. Kat inhales a deep breath and feels a wave of calmness wash over her.
"You have to face it." Athena says. "You have to calm down."
"She's got to what?" Dean looks at the youngest Winchester.
Kat feels her panic start to rise again. "I have to what?"
"The spirits aren't trying to hurt you." Athena states. "They're trying to communicate. You've got to face it."
"You face it!"
"I'm not the one trapped in the room!" Athena retorts. "And besides it's the only way you're gonna get out of there."
"No!"
"You just have to look at it. That's all." Athena's voice was more gentle. "You can do it."
Silence settles into the hall and the room. "I hope you're right about this." Dean says.
"Come on, Dean. You know this already." Athena huffs. "Of course I'm right."
The door slowly opens. Gavin exhales a breath of relief. "Kat."
The blonde steps out of the room and walks toward her boyfriend.
"137."
"Sorry?"
"It whispered in my ear '137'." Kat states.
The siblings exchange a look.
"Room number."
"So, if these spirits aren't trying to hurt anyone—"
"Then what are they trying to do?" Dean asks.
"Maybe that's what they've been trying to tell us." Sam says.
"I guess we'll find out." Dean replies. The siblings turn to the couple. "So, now, you guys ready to leave this place?"
"That's an understatement." Kat says.
"Okay. You get them out of here." Dean says. "Athena and I are gonna go find room 137."
☆
"Found something." Athena holds a hand up.
"Of course you did." Dean sighs. "I wanted to be the first to find something."
"Aw..." Athena clicks her tongue. "Maybe next time."
Dean stands beside Athena and looks into the book she found. The girl pulls her goggles over her head and Dean rolls his eyes.
"They aren't prescription goggles, y'know?"
Athena pulls her brows together, "Yes they are."
Dean raises his brows, "How did you?—"
"It's me, Dean." Athena sighs. "I can do anything."
Dean frowns and nods his head, agreeing with the girl.
"Oh, gross!" Athena points at the picture of the needle. "This doctor was a monster."
"All work and no play makes Dr. Elliott a very dull boy." Dean winces at the picture.
"Fucking psycho."
Athena grabs her bag and unzips it. She pulls the mason jar out of the bag and holds it out. Dean looks at the jar with a few dollars in it.
"What?! You have to give me a pass on that!" Dean huffs.
"I will do no such thing, big brother." Athena shakes her head. "You make a fair point. But you could've made that point without the swear so..."
Athena shakes the jar. Dean hangs his head low. He digs in his pockets and drops a dollar into the jar. Athena smiles, "Pleasure doing business with you."
"Yeah, yeah—whatever." Dean mushes her face. "Lets show Sam what we found."
Athena and Dean walk through the Asylum and round the corner, where Sam, Gavin, and Kat were supposed to be.
Athena takes a step forward and looks around the corner. Her eyes make contact with the blonde aiming the shotgun towards them. Dean's eyes widen, he grabs the back of Athena's bag and pulls her back as the bullet hits the wall near their faces.
Athena lets out a cry and Dean wraps his arms around the girl. "Fiddlesticks!" Dean shouts.
"You said Fiddlesticks." Athena says. Dean pulls Athena out of the protective embrace. He scans her face, looking for any cuts.
"Are you okay? You didn't get hurt?"
Athena shakes her head. "No, just...dust." She looks at the dust in her hair.
Dean exhales a breath of relief. He pats at her hair, knocking the dust out of it.
"I hope you know by now that it's us!" Dean raises his voice.
"Sorry! Sorry!" Kat repeatedly apologizes.
Athena and Dean cautiously step around the corner and walk towards the couple.
"What are you still doing here?" Athena asks.
"Where's Sam?" Athena and Dean chorus.
"He went to the basement. You called him." Gavin answers.
Athena pulls her brows together.
"I didn't call him." Dean states.
"His cellphone rang. He said it was you." Kat says.
Athena and Dean exchange a look.
"Basement, huh?" Dean exhales. "Okay, Athy. Watch after them. I'm gonna go find Sam."
Athena nods her head. "Be careful."
"Always." Dena shrugs and he starts to jog away.
"No, not always." Athena scratches her brow. "That's why I said be careful."
Athena turns to the couple. "Hi."
"Hi." Kat waves timidly. "I'm sorry, for the whole...almost shooting you thing."
"Yeah, not the first time and certainly won't be the last." Athena shrugs. "My dad almost shot me once."
Silence settles between the three and Athena raises her brows. "And if you needed clarification...that one wasn't a joke."
"Oh...I'm sorry." Gavin rubs his arm.
Athena rocks back and forth on her heels.
Kat shifts uncomfortably. "Yeah, me too."
You made things weird again. Stupid.
"I made things weird." Athena sighs.
"No, no—you didn't make things weird." Gavin sputters. "Right, Kat?"
"Gavin, she totally did—"
"See, I knew it!" Athena whines.
"No, Kat's kidding—she's a kidder."
Kat raises her brows, noticing Gavin's glare. "Yes...I am a kidder and I was kidding about you making things weird. Because you didn't make things weird, Athena."
Athena squints her eyes, "Liar."
Kat pulls her face back. "She just...she called me a liar."
"Yeah, I'm sorry. It's a thing I do." Athena sighs. She looks at her dinosaur watch. "I'm gonna go check on Sam and Dean.
Athena turns on her heel and starts to walk away.
"Whoa, whoa—wait!"
Athena stops and turns to the couple.
"Dean told you to stay here." Kat says.
"I know. But they probably—not probably but most definitely, will need my help." Athena shrugs. "So, I'm going."
"All by yourself?" Gavin raises his brows.
Athena cranes her neck forward, "Do you two want to join?"
"Please?"
Athena presses her lips into a comforting smile and motions for them to follow. "Come on."
Kat and Gavin jog after the girl. Athena goes back to walking through the building with the couple.
☆
The first thing Athena heard was a crash. "Oh, no..."
Athena runs toward the sound and enters the room. "Holy shit!—"
"Language!" Athena hisses. The girl sees Sam standing over Dean who was on the ground, groaning.
"Sam. We've gotta burn Ellicott's bones, and all this will be over, and you'll be back to normal." Dean says through his pain.
Athena pulls her brows together.
"I am normal." Sam growls. "I'm just telling the truth for the first time."
"I mean, why are we even here?" Sam asks. "Because you're following dad's orders like a good, little soldier?"
Dean slightly lifts up his head and sees Athena slowly inching into the room with Kat and Gavin peaking into the room.
"Cause you always do what he says without question?" Sam exhales a chuckle of disbelief. "Are you that desperate for his approval?"
"This isn't you talking, Sam." Dean huffs.
"That's the difference between you and me. I have a mind if my own." Sam scoffs. "I'm not pathetic like you or Athy."
Athena stops in her tracks and looks at her brother.
"Shut up." Dean growls.
"Don't act like it's not true." Sam laughs. "You two are still under the old man's spell and it's bullshit."
"So, what are you gonna do, huh? Are you gonna kill me?" Dean questions.
"You know what? I am sick of doing what you tell me to do." Sam seethes. "We're no closer to finding dad today than we were six months ago."
"Well, then here..." Dena reaches in his jacket pocket. "...let me make it easier for you." He pulls his gun out.
"Come on. Take it." Dean holds the gun out towards Sam. "Real bullets are gonna work a hell of a lot better than rock salt. Take it—"
Sam snatched the gun from Dean's hand. He drops the shot gun and aims the Beretta at Dean's head.
"You hate me that much?" Dean manages to get out. "You think you can kill your own brother? Then go ahead. Pull the trigger."
Sam pulls the trigger, but the gun clicks. He pulls the trigger again.
"SNEAK ATTACK!"
Athena swings the pole into Sam's side and he stumbles to the side with a groan.
"Sorry!" Athena cries out. She wraps her arms around Sam's neck. "I'm sorry!"
Dean quickly sits up and punches Sam in the face. Athena releases Sam and he falls to the ground, unconscious.
"Sorry, Sammy." Dean exhales sharply.
Athena looks from her unconscious brother to her brother in pain.
"Are you okay?" Athena pulls her brows together.
Dean inhales a breath and winces. "Fine..." he waves a hand. "...lets fine that dick head's bones."
"Swear jar."
"Oh, come on..." Dean wheezes.
Athena steps into the secret room and her mouth hangs open. "I can't believe he got away with this..." she presses her lips into a firm line. "...he hurt so many people."
"Yeah, and we're not gonna let him do that, anymore." Dean gives Athena a pat on her shoulder.
Athena nods her head, her eyes catch sight of a white cabinet that was closed shut. "Huh...suspicious."
She walks over to the cabinet with Dean. Athena crouches down and so does Dean. They each grab one of the doors to the cabinet.
Simultaneously, the siblings pull the doors open, and are greeted with the stench of death. Athena's eyes water from the sight of the body and her stomach turns. The girl slaps a hand over her nose.
Dean coughs and waves a hand. "Oh, that's just gross." He grimaces.
"I'm gonna be sick." Athena crawls away from the body. "I'm sure you can finish this..." she dry heaves.
"Please, don't do that." Dean groans. He starts to toss salt onto Ellicott's body. "If you vomit—I'm gonna vomit, all right?"
"I-I'll try not to—"
Athena hurls. Dean gags and looks off to the side. "Today can't get any worse—"
Suddenly the table is shoved into Dean's side and he slams into the ground. Athena wipes her mouth. "Okay, I think I'm going to be okay..." she turns around and sees the spirit pressing his hands against Dean's temples.
"Don't be afraid." Dr. Ellicott cooes. "I'm going to help you."
Athena stands up and curls her shaky hands into fists. "L-Leave him alone!"
Her eyes fall onto the duffel bag. She sprints over to the bag and grabs the lighter. Athena flickers the lighter on and tosses it onto the body, erupting it into flames.
Athena snaps her eyes over to the spirit and watches it turn to stone. Dr. Ellicott's body falls to the ground and it shatters into pieces.
Athena looks at Dean, her eyes then shift to Sam who slowly stirs awake.
"You're not gonna try and kill me, are you?" Dean asks.
"No..."
"Good. Cause that would be awkward." Dean sighs.
Dean looks at his little sister, who was staring at Dr. Ellicott's body. "Great job, Athy."
The girl pulls her brows together. "Really?" She looks at him.
Dean blinks. "Yeah, really really."
A small smile forms on the girl's lips and she chuckles. "Oh...thank you."
