Nandini:
My eyes fluttered open as the harsh rays of sun hit my lids.
An involuntary sigh escaped my lips as I found Anurag worked up as maa again brought up marriage topic. The whole family was on breakfast table and it wasn't long enough before maa again came up with his marriage. He tried numerous times to make her understand that he doesn't wish the same but maa seems to be on a complete different rail.
"Maa please." Anurag sighed tiredly. Bags under his eyes and scattered locks gave away exhausting night he must have had. I silently looked at Manik, who looked equally worried, and gently nudged him, gesturing him to help him out.
Taking a cue, he cleared his throat before speaking, "Maa, what's with you suddenly behind him for marriage?"
She looked at him unexpectedly, "What? He's 27. Both of you will turn 28 next week." She turned towards Anurag, "You don't want to marry?"
He hesitated, before catching a quick glance at us and then turning towards maa. He gently took her hands in his and caressed it softly, "I do maa. But with the person who is perfect for me. I don't want to rush things up." He tried explaining. We could see maa's face falling down and lips forming a small pout.
I chuckled at her tactics, "Maa," I softly said, tasking her attention. "Aap hi kehete hai na, good things take time. And I'm sure, the patience shall bless us with the sweetest fruit." I looked at Anurag, who's expressions gave away his feelings. "And if he isn't ready, forcing him won't be right."
The silence prevailed as my voice trailed off. Three of us looked at maa expectantly, who eventually smiled softly, "You are right." Collective sighs were heard as these words escaped her lips.
"Thank you ma'am." Anurag muttered softly, his shoulders visibly relaxed. Maa smiled and gently caressed his cheeks.
"Tu ek cheez humesha bhul jata hai, Anu." Anurag's eyebrows furrowed, "Maa hu teri."
"27 saal mein 27 hazaar baar bol chuke yeh aap maa." Anurag answered, confused by her statement. Maa glared at him before smacking his head.
"I meant, I am completely understanding why are you not getting married." All of our hands froze mid way, looking at her slowly.
"Mat...matlab?" He stuttered.
She simply shrugged off, "Mujhe kaam hai. Mein chalti." And she did walk off, leaving us confused.
"Did she come to know about Mannat?" I let out my query, and their gazes answered the question.
Goodness, how could I underestimate my own mother?
CBI officer se kam nahi hain.
"No, how is it possible." Anurag let out a nervous chuckle, which eventually dropped. "You think it's possible?"
We shrugged carelessly, continuing with our breakfast. My eyes traveled to Anurag's plate that had a very tiny amount of poha and he was filling his stomach with water. I sighed at the sight and moved to serve him more.
"Bhabhi-"
I interrupted him, "I told you, you are allowed to try as much as you want. Rest we will handle. Cutting down on food won't help you in any ways." I spoke softly, hands moving simultaneously to serve him.
"You spoke to Mannat?" Manik asked, sipping on his juice.
Anurag nodded, "She was worried about you bhabhi."
She must be. I walked off yesterday and took no efforts to call her. "I will speak to her today." I made a mental note.
"Let's get going? Nandini, we'll drop you. Come." My husband said, getting up from his seat.
"But how will I come back?" I asked him, seeing him picking my bag along with his and walking with his brother.
"What time your shift gets over?"
I gave it a thought, "By 7 PM." We came near his car.
"I'll pick you up then." He nonchalantly spoke, opening the passenger seat for me. I grinned at his words and immediately took a seat.
"I have no mood to see this romance. I'm going in my own car." Anurag muttered, turning towards the other side where his car was parked.
"Yeah as if I don't know why you need your own car." Manik yelled, chuckling while taking the driver's seat. I saw Anurag shaking his head in disbelief before getting into in own car.
"You tease him a lot." I commented, my eyes stuck to his arms that controlled steering wheel. My throat dried at the sight of his veins tracing those muscular arms, partially hidden beneath his white shirt.
"You have no idea how much he teased me during our marriage." He replied sulkily. I giggled at his look, shaking my head in dismay.
A part of me was still worried. I couldn't help but ask, "You think maa will stop pondering him for marriage?"
He sighed, eyes stuck to the road, "Yes. But I also know that she has doubts about his love life."
"You think?"
"Hmm hmm."
I went silent, my thoughts wandering from Anurag Mannat to the current situation. Will things fall in its place? She is my sister. Maa Papa shouldn't have any problem with her, will they?
His large hand gently locked around my petite ones, thumb caressing the dorsal side silently, "Everything will be okay."
I nodded, "It has to be."
We fell into comfortable silence, our hands still entangled with each other and gaze stuck to our respective sides. Eventually car came to a halt in front of my hospital. He gently nudged me, looking deeper into my eyes, "Don't think too much. Yeah? You need to focus on that high profile case of yours today."
I raised my brows, "You keep track of my patients?"
He narrowed his gaze, "You told me about it two weeks ago madam."
"Oh-" I went numb. "I thought..."
"How is it possible, that you speak and I don't pay attention? Hmm?" He whispered, caressing my cheek softly.
My heart warmed at his minute actions and delightful words. I leaned forward, gently pecking his lips, "Have a good day." I murmured against them before quickly withdrawing and stepping out.
"NANDINI!" He shouted, "Not fair yaar!" I laughed at his face before coming towards his side of window and leaning casually.
"Patience Mr. Malhotra." I winked.
He glared at me playfully, "I'll see you at night." I scoffed and turned to run away into the hospital.
"We'll see that patidev." I yelled, waving him a bye.
I entered hospital with a huge smile on my face, and to not miss, even huge grin dancing on my husband's face.

Mannat:
I was terrified was an understatement. The subtle sound of air conditioner working and paper printing rang louder in this haunting silence. My office welcomed an uncomfortable silence.
Tension seeped in deeper as I paced back and forth endlessly, my gaze swiping to my phone time and again. I yearned for a single call, message, any notification. I was not able to contact Anurag since morning. Nandini hasn't contacted me since yesterday. Although I did text jiju, but his text wasn't that helpful either.
One side, my phone was flooded with messages from the publishers. My other book was finally into the process of getting published when the first one has already crossed a global threshold. The feeling of success after continuous rejection was surreal indeed.
"Tensed, Miss. Murthy?" A voice from behind broke the chain of my thoughts. I turned to find Anurag standing there in his glory, leaning against the doorframe. His eyes never leaving mine as he walked towards me, locking the door behind.
"Anurag. Why aren't you responding to my texts? How is everything there? Nandu. How's she? She's still angry? Of course she must be. But did you ask her to call me? I know you would have but still. Is she too upset? Did jiju try to speak to her? She's okay right? Look I-" My words died when he pressed his lips against mine, shutting off my rant.
The air around went still. As if the world around has stopped and only thing I could see was him. The only thing I could feel was him. My consciousness evaporated in thin air when he gently pressed his lips against mine, hands slowly encircling my waist to erase the remaining distance.
I exhaled shakily, my eyes shutting almost instinctively when he started moving his lips against mine. I clutched my hands into a first as he leaned forward to further deepen the contact. He carelessly sucked over my lips while his hand caressing my waist over the cloth. His warmth breath against my skin and lips moving feverishly evoked something sinful.
He pulled back momentarily, "Respond sweetheart." And again crashed his lips with mine.
I obliged, reciprocating to his actions actively. My hand traveled to his locks, pulling him closer as I sucked over his lips. He tugged harshly over my lower lips while I took turn to his upper. We moved reverently before my back collided with table, our hands moving over each other.
He effortlessly picked me up and made me sit on the temple without breaking the contact. Our movements became desperate, unwilling to let go the final thread that had us in control. I almost moaned when he ran his tongue over the seam of my lower lips, before sucking and tugging over it.
Anurag caught my neck slowly before tilting for a better angle. He traced my lips against, asking for the entrance. I was stubborn enough to not let him in, and thus mirrored his actions by tracing my tongue over his sensitive skin. Both of us weren't ready to give up the control. He continually tugged over my skin before tracing them to sooth it, while I kissed him harder to suppress his actions. My movements froze when I felt his hand slipping under my kurti, reaching for the skin over my waist. He pinched over there, leaving me gasping. Taking it as a chance, he shoved his tongue inside my mouth. I moaned as our tongues collided, almost reaching out for each other.
He sucked endlessly over my mouth. The scene of his head moving so and so for his actions, his hands under my kurti and my hands tugging him closer made the moment even desperate.
We broke apart panting heavily, our foreheads resting against each other. "That was-" I started, my eyes reaching for his face.
He raised his brows, smirking gently, "That was?"
My cheeks warmed at his pondering, eyes shying away from his. He chuckled at my actions, before pulling me to his embrace. I inhaled his cologne, calming the fire inside me. His fingers danced over my nape while pressing periodic kisses over my temple.
I looked at him, my chin resting on his chest, "How's everything there?" I finally asked.
He sighed, "Everything is fine Minion. Trust me."
"But Nandu?"
"I told her, as you said." I nodded mindlessly, my eyes drifting to nowhere particular.
"But," He spoke again, before trailing off to run his eyes over my face. "I think maa has a doubt."
My eyes widened. I immediately parted away from his embrace, amusement rushing through my veins. "WHAT?" I screamed. "SHE KNOWS?"
He shook his head, "No, I meant, she might have an idea that I am seeing someone."
Nervousness creeped in quicker than I anticipated. "What now?"
"Now nothing." He shrugged. I passed him a pointed look, to which he exhaled, "Minion, maa won't have any problem with you. Alright? But I just don't want to go around and tell everyone that we are dating." I agreed with this. We didn't even know each other properly.
"Do you...like are you thinking of marriage?" I asked slowly, fidgeting with the loose end of my cloth.
"Eventually, yes." He answered truthfully. "But right now. No." Unknown relief washed over my face. He must have caught a look and thus chuckled at it.
I shook my head, "I meant, we don't even know each other properly. I don't want to...rush." I immediately murmured, trying to erase any form of doubt in his mind.
He just stared at me for a while, before a smile breaking over his lips. He pressed a gentle kiss over my forehead, before speaking, "I know. Calm down."
And I did.
Just a moment with him and everything suddenly seems okay. As if with him by my side, and we could face anything and everything together.
