"It's the unexpected that changes your life"

"A minute 23 for Maya and A minute 32 for JJ" Cruz states as Maya and JJ come to a stop after jogging. Maya breathes heavily as she bends down and takes a drink of water from the fountain.

"Helps when someone is chasing me" JJ declares as she tries catching her breath tiredly before Cruz takes a drink from the fountain after Maya was done.

"Still faster than you" Maya states as she gives JJ a high five before letting out an airy laugh. "We should do this every morning" Cruz states and Maya shakes her head, "Don't say it like that" Maya says as she leans her head back and wipes the sweat off of her forehead.

"Yeah, we really, uh, we really shouldn't meet like this. Any of us" JJ declares as she looks between Maya and Cruz. "We work together, JJ. I promise no one will think this is weird" Maya states crossing her arms over her chest as she talks with Cruz and JJ.

"She's right though cause, uh, we have to talk about some things" Cruz states as he leans closer to Maya and JJ.

"Want to grab breakfast?" Cruz asks and Maya sighs as she looks around at her surroundings. "Not really, no, I think I'm going to run home" Maya states honestly as she checks her phone in her back pocket.

"That's like 5 miles" Cruz states and Maya shrugs her shoulders. "I bet I can do it in 10 minutes" Maya says as she starts running in place until she runs off and begins her journey home.

Maya arrives at the BAU, freshly showered and dressed, her hair in a high slick back ponytail. "Good morning" Derek says as Maya enters the room and takes a seat next to him. "Hello" Maya greets before Garcia quickly gives the rundown of the recent case.

The incident happened in Baltimore and involved the stumbling guy having a dual lobotomy. The team talks a little about the history of the procedure, and how it was used to 'cure' people of mental disorders.

The guy has a neat little spike hole next to each eye, so the lobotomy was probably done with one of those old-fashioned spike and hammer kit.

"Excuse me, Agent Hotchner. Agent Cruz is here" One of the other agents says in the doorway and both JJ and Maya lift their head as Mateo Cruz walks through the door and immediately locks eyes with the two of them. Maya raises her eyebrows in shock as Hotch introduces him as the new Unit Section Chief.

Maya and JJ swiftly lock eyes before both liking down at the case file in front of them and pretend not to know him before he invites himself along to work the case with them as a way for everyone to get to know each other.

Maya and JJ take longer to gather their things and wait for the rest of the team to exit the conference room before they stand to their feet and look to Cruz in disbelief. "You're kidding, right?" Maya asks even though she already knows the answer.

"Yeah, you could've mentioned this" JJ declares, setting her things in her bag as Cruz claims that he only found out after arriving at work the same day.

"You just made everything so awkward" Maya sighs before her and JJ walk out the room side by side, not believing what they just saw.

During the drive, they talk a little about how they don't have any information about the victim, and about how Dahmer wanted to use acid lobotomies to create sex slaves.

In the other car, Derek, Rossi, Maya and JJ talk about Cruz, and both JJ and Maya claim they've never met him. They then look to each other as the car falls silent and both recall the same vague memories.

Derek and Maya then go to visit the victim in the hospital. "He's been in and out of consciousness. I've had to stabilize his head, given the extent of the injuries. He's sedated to help with the pain" The doctor informs as her walks in between Maya and Derek through the hallways of the hospital, taking them to see the victim.

"Don't those meds cause Amnesia?" Maya asks, looking over to the doctor who nods his head sadly but also shrugs his shoulders. "Sometimes, yes, but I don't have a choice" The doctor states and Maya nods her head understandingly.

"Do you think he understands what's happening?" Derek wonders while doctor hopes he doesn't because of how severe his injuries are.

They stop in front of the hospital room and both Maya and Derek show their badges to the cop in front of the door. The cop nods his head and lets them through. They walk in and see a nurse tending to the victim before both Maya and Derek step in front of him, introducing themselves by their name and occupation to let him know that he's safe now.

"Can you tell us your name?" Maya asks, analyzing the victim in front of her. The victim doesn't answer which Maya and Derek find weird. "I don't think he can talk" Maya states as Derek steps to the side of the patient beds and finds out he can communicate through blinks.

After finding that out, Derek goes right into the questions about whether he knows who the killer is. It's a no. But he does confirm it was a man who did this to him.

"Was he working alone?" Derek asks and the victim confirms the unsub was. "Do you know where he kept you?" Maya asks softly and he confirms he does know the place where he was kept. The victim then gets frustrated and wiggles his fingers, hoping that he can write down the information about where he was attacked.

Derek allows him to write and when the victim finishes writing, Derek shows the paper to Maya and Maya shakes her head sadly before Derek shows it to the victim. He wrote a bunch of scribbles meaning none of his writing is clear enough to read.

"The person who did this to you messed up your ability to talk, but we're going to get through it, all right?" Derek reassures before the victim placed his hand on his face and its obvious, he's confused, afraid and shocked just by the look in his eyes.

Derek decided to pull out his phone and show the victim what he looks like. Once the victim sees, he quickly closes his eyes, not wanting to see anymore.

Later, Maya and Derek let the victim rest and go grab a coffee and sit down in the chairs outside the room. "I couldn't imagine not being able to talk" Maya states before she takes a sip of her coffee. "Yeah, because you do a lot of that" Derek jokes and Maya scoffs before nudging his arm playfully, making then both laugh softly until the laughter dies down and they stopped to look at each other.

Maya's eyes sparkled with admiration while Derek's did the same. Maya smiled slightly before turning her head away from him, starting to get nervous with the amount of eye contact.

She took a sip of her coffee and stood to her feet. "I think we should get back to questioning" Maya declares as she looks down at Derek who clears his throat softly and stands to his feet before they both enter the victims' room and set their cups of coffee down before they begin questioning again.

Moments go by and Derek was getting answers but not enough information since the victim cannot talk. What they know so far is the unsub is working alone and there was more than one victim.

Maya watches in distraught as she can practically see the dark circles under the victim's eyes, knowing he's ready to hit snooze. "Derek, he's getting tired. We got to speed this up" Maya urges and Derek sighs defeatedly before going back to questioning.

They get more information and learn the other victim is a girl and is possibly still being held captive and the victim they are questioning now knows who the girl is.

Back at the station, the team is trying to figure out why the two victims haven't been missed yet. But they have no idea how long the killer held the two people. Garcia's had no luck in identifying the victim either, but she phoned Emily to ask if Interpol had any information about a lobotomy killer, and they did - in Germany.

When victim hears Derek mention Germany on the phone he freaks out and demands attention, but before they can get information about him, his doctor notices that the piece of metal in his eye. Assumed to be left over from the tool used for surgery-is actually a camera.

And the killer is possibly looking out his eye hole right now.

The team gets some background on the tech from Cruz and learns they're special cameras with lenses the size of a pinhead. They're not widely available, but a rich person could find them on the black market.

Also, the German victim had the operation, but was later shot in the head, because, the team guesses, he was just a test run to make sure the operation worked as planned.

Without any leads, other than the access to future technology the team thinks it's time for a profile. The unsub is smart and talented and may see himself in the victims. Also, he's spent time in Germany, because he killed someone there and has some connection to old-timey mental institutions.

"What did he say when you asked if there was a woman held with him?" JJ asks as she walks side by side with Maya and Derek. "Well, he didn't say a word. His brain is all scrambled" Maya informs as she rests her hands in her back pocket.

"Gosh, I can't imagine knowing what's going on and not being able to say anything" Derek cringes as he shakes his head in disbelief as him, JJ and Maya look through the window of the victim's room.

"I know he's only got minimal gestures, but did he give you any indication he knew her?" JJ asks, "He shut his eyes, the same way he did when he realized he was paralyzed" Derek answers while Maya leans up against the wall. "It's a sign. An emotional one but, a sign" JJ declares sadly before Rossi joins them wondering about the camera that's in the victim's eye.

"The doctor is checking the x-rays now to see if he can get it out" Derek answers and Maya looks to JJ before coming up with a conclusion, "If it's like a nano tech camera, I doubt they'll be able to remove it" Maya declares and Rossi and Derek look to her in confusion.

"Why?" They ask in unison before JJ states that it could be dangerous for the victim and the very least, he could lose his eye.

"Have you guys, like, seen this stuff before?" Derek asks, looking between JJ and Maya. "A little bit, yeah" Maya shrugs before JJ quietly clears her throat. "Not quite like this, but it's used for foreign counterintelligence" JJ declares while Derek wonders where the unsub could possibly get the camera.

"It's like back-alley Lasik" Maya states and Derek scoffs annoyingly as he looks back at the victim through the window.

"We should just shut his eyes. Shows over" Derek declares, "Or we could play his game" Rossi concludes.

Derek then gets the victim to blink at the word board and find out his name is Sam Carter and is a grad student at John Hopkins. They continue this process and find out that the woman being held in captivity as they speak is Dani.

Maya writes a sign saying 'we know who you are' up to Sam's eye, hoping to bluff the killer and play along with his sick game.

Garcia then gets a call from Kevin and finds out the killer is broadcasting the eye footage over the web in order to make some kind of a point. Which gives them a second direction to track him from but tough because Maya and Derek are both in the footage.

Now that they know the killer is broadcasting footage of Derek and Maya everywhere around the world, they have Sam shut his eyes, killing the signal.

The team finds out he was injecting the new camera, which he immediately starts broadcasting from as well, showing the entire internet what he looks like. The killer makes them watch as he brings in the lobotomy tools, and the team is on the ball enough to notice the weird glass bricks in the ceiling, suggesting that they're in a basement somewhere.

They also notice that there are six locks on the door so it's obvious the killer doesn't plan on getting away with his crime, so it makes sense that he'd want to go out on his own terms.

Alex and Reid try to figure out what could possibly motivate the killer, since his acts don't seem to have a sexual component, but the unsub just inject things into bodies and stabbing with needles. Nothing sexual there.

They make the jump that it could be some kind of a familial connection, because who would deserve this kind of punishment other than a family member...

Searching through Sam's phone records reveals Dana, who is from Germany, and whose father owns a warehouse near where one of the possible signal sources. They see Dana being put into the van and go through her family history. Her brother, Anton, is a delinquent with a history of violent outbursts.

Maya decided to leave the hospital and go with the team. The team gets to the alley and finds Dana, but the killer is already gone.

Hotch splits the team up into teams to search the building and has Maya and Cruz join him. They search the building, and Hotch and Maya find the killer downstairs in the torture room, just waiting for the authorities to arrive.

"Show us your hands" Maya demands while Anton smiles mischievously, "I'd like to ask you something" Anton insist but Hotch states it doesn't work like that and orders him to raise his hands and Anton does as he's told.

"Aren't you supposed to ask me why I do what I do?" Anton wonders and Maya shakes her head slowly as she grips her gun tightly. "I don't care, really, and I already know so it's no point in asking" Maya shrugs and Anton tilts his head to the side curiously.

"And what is that, sweetheart?" Anton asks making Maya chuckles softly before she swiftly places her gun in her holster.

"Your patient, but you take risks. It's why you didn't care if we saw you. I heard about the man you practiced on in Berlin and I've wondered why you hadn't practiced on his eyes but it's because you did your own and all of this is being recorded... right now... as we speak" Maya rants as she slowly steps towards Anton, shaking him she's not afraid.

"You want everyone to know what it's like to be you, but I assure none of them want to be a sicko, a loner or the second choice. You think they'll feel sorry for you and understand your pain? They won't" Maya confirms, seeing Anton's facial expressions tighten as she continues speaking.

"And right now you're wondering why I am walking towards you with no care in the world... it's because we already shut down the broadcast and if you don't believe me, see for yourself" Maya says as she motions to Anton's tablet in front of him.

He shrugs, and says it doesn't matter, because people saw the rest of the footage and besides, he was really trying to get back at his sister and father, and, you know, mission accomplished.

Anton is led away in handcuffs, and Cruz congratulates Maya on her brilliant bluff. "I guess they needed you here more" Cruz states before he walks away, leaving Maya to her thoughts before she left the warehouse as well.

Case Closed.

Back at the BAU, Maya and JJ are about to leave. "I can't believe he took this job" Maya declares as she and JJ wait for the elevator to open. "They called and I accepted" Cruz states as he comes up next to Maya who stands next to JJ. Maya sighs, "Even though you know we work here" Maya states as she looks over at Cruz who puts his head down, looking at the ground.

"Listen, that case could stay open for another couple years-" Cruz states before Maya interrupts him, "Yeah, I know. Just tell us why you took the job" Maya demands, wanting to stop the small talk.

"I was just told to drive out to Quantico immediately. No questions asked. This isn't about you or Jennifer" Cruz reassures right when the elevator opens.

Maya nods as she steps in, JJ walking in after her. "That's all I needed to know" Maya states before the elevator door shuts, leaving Maya and JJ in silence and little did they know, also in danger...
