"I was given a name that doesn't feel like it's mine anymore"
"Last night, a girl, Gina Bryant flagged down a police car in St. Louis. She was wearing nothing, but a dirty nightgown and she was barefoot, and she told them that she had been kidnapped when she was 8" Garcia explains as she takes a seat at the conference table, Natalie widening her eyes as recalls Garcia saying she was taken when she was 8 but looks down at the picture in the file and notices she looks older than that.
"How old is she now? 19? 20?" Natalie questions, looking to Garcia, who confirms that Gina is actually 18 and a foster kid who disappeared 10 years ago.
"Ariel Castro 2.0 here" Maya says as she shakes her head in disgust before Garcia chuckles humorlessly, "Funny you say that because she told the police that she was held captive with this girl, Sheila Woods, who is now 15 years old and has been held captive for at least 7 years" Garcia says, and mentions that there is a third girl but they have no way to identify her because neither Gina or Sheila, who is sick in the hospital, knows her real name beside the one the captor gave them which is Violet.
"What about there captor? Did they say anything about him?" Reid wonders and Garcia shrugs her shoulders, "Only that his name was Tom and he's an old white dude" Garcia answers.
JJ goes on to ask about the house they've been being held captive in and Garcia puts the picture up on the television screen. The house they were living in was owned on paper by what would have been a 108-year-old woman if she were still alive, but everyone is assuming she's dead but the death was unreported.
Now they just have to figure out how to track down the unsub and save his longest-serving victim...
_____
At the hospital, Hotch, Reid, JJ and Natalie see the doctor talking with the mother of the sick girl, Sheila, then he comes over to offer his take on the situation. Sheila almost died because of a miscarriage that wasn't treated properly.
Also, she has whip marks all over her back just like Gina, who was also whipped, and has evidence of broken bones.
"I sure hope you catch the guy who did this" The doctor states and Natalie nods her head slowly, secretly hoping they do too.
JJ, Natalie and Reid hang out in Gina's room, waiting for her to wake up. She's shocked and alarmed to see them there, and why wouldn't she be, after the decade-long nightmare that's taken up more than half of her life.
"Hi, Gina. My names Jennifer. These are my friends Spencer and Natalie" JJ introduces, Natalie and Reid look down at Gina and give her a friendly wave, showing her that they can be trusted, and she doesn't have to fear them.
"Do you mind if we ask you a few questions? We're the with the FBI, the police" Natalie questions, talking in a calm low manner voice so she doesn't alarm Gina in any way.
______________
Maya, Derek and Rossi look out the basement window that Gina broke in order to get out and flag down help for her and the other girls that have been kidnapped. Maya sighs and turns back towards the basement, seeing that this is where the girls were forced to live due to the bunk beds, toys, and other girly items in the room that their kidnapper thought they would want.
Maya adjusts the surgical gloves on her hands and looks down at the bed on the floor where they found Sheila lying when the police arrived at the house. The bed was covered in blood from her miscarriage that wasn't properly cared for.
Meanwhile, Derek walks over to a small table that has plates, forks, and other kitchen items before Maya walks over and admires the walls filled with child drawings and decorations.
The girls had to make this horrid living space seem like home because they weren't sure if or when they'd get back to that. It was their only way to stay hopeful and sane through these years of captivity.
The three of them continue to search the basement and look over, seeing a part of the basement is cut off with a blanket covering the area. Rossi, Maya and Derek walk over to it and Rossi is the one to move the blanket out of the way and Maya furrows her eyebrows in shock as her and Derek are the first to step in after seeing an X-Shaped bondage wall they find in the next room that looks like it's used for torture.
______________
Reid, Natalie and JJ continue to talk with Gina and discover that she was abused at the foster home when she was 8, so she would often hang out in a park. It was there that Violet, the girl that the team has not found yet, found her and used a puppy to lure her into a van.
Then, that's where Gina suffered a decade of torture. She has no actionable information to offer yet and apologizes for not being able to remember where they went.
"Don't ever apologize for the things that happened to you. It's not your fault, okay?" Natalie reassures as Gina nods her head repeatedly while letting the tears stream down her face, letting her emotions run free after all these years.
Later, they get Gina in a wheelchair and wheel her around the hospital and gather more information. Gina states she never knew Violet's real name, but she does know that the other girls would sometimes get to go on multiple-day trips with the killer. They'd never say where they went, though, and she didn't get to go because she was too rebellious.
Also, they're all named after flowers because the old lady had an extensive garden- one that they still planted flowers in for her...
______
A further search of the house turns up torture p*rn and a lot of carpentry tools. "This guy has to be some kind of sick twisted carpenter or handy man" Maya declares, not wanting to call this unsub anything but a deranged, disgusting sadist.
"Yeah, and check this out," Derek calls over to Maya and Rossi as he walks towards the man's closet and sees that clothes are in a specific color order and no pants, socks or shirts are anywhere out of place and don't even have a wrinkle in them, "could be OCD. I mean, his closet is just right. Clothes perfectly folded and his bed is so neat you can bounce a quarter off of it" Derek says as Maya scans her eyes towards the unsubs bed.
How could a guy so sick and twisted be so neat?
"If his home is like his life he won't like being on the run for much longer" Rossi announces that the unsub will soon fill powerless because he wants complete control over every aspect of his life. "That's why he took Violet with him" Maya realizes, knowing that Sheila was probably too sick to travel and he needed someone to control in the midst of an eventual crisis.
"You know, Violet was the oldest and helped with the abductions. She was probably his first victim" Derek says, putting clues together. "What about the old women... Clara Riggins. That lady didn't disappear out of thin air" Maya wonders as she looks between Rossi and Derek, who have the same skeptical look on their faces.
Maya then goes back to what they think is a his job, a carpenter. Perhaps that's how he found the old woman. Worked on her house, built a relationship with her, then waited for her to die and took over her home but never told authorities she was dead.
Maya furrows her eyebrows with curiosity and walks towards the windows barley pulling the curtain to look in the backyard of the home and sees a garden, "Didn't JJ say the unsub named the girls after flowers?" Maya asks as she turns back to Rossi and Derek, who share the same realization look and immediately rush out to the back yard, calling back up so the garden could be dug up.
Once they interpreted that the old lady is buried in the garden, they dig it up, and find the body immediately.
______________
Natalie exits the bathroom and bumps into Reid, causing him to drop the files. She notices a sketch falls out and immediately picks it up before one of the nurses' steps on it, ruining it. "Is this the sketch of the unsub?" Natalie asks, gently handing the photo back to Reid, who nods. "I hope so" Reid says as wrestles to place the papers neatly back inside the file, in their original order.
Natalie sighs stressfully and pushes a strand of her hair behind her ear and apologizes for bumping into him before bringing Reid up to the large counter in the hall and helping him place the paperwork in their file, immediately watching as their hands slide across each others a few times.
Reid's breath hitches as Natalie's hand rests on his. She slowly turns her head to look at him and a smile spreads across her lips, while both their hearts beat to the same rhythm and enjoy each others company. "We should probably go tell JJ" Reid says softly, his breath lightly the top of Natalie's forehead as she nods her head, silently agreeing with him.
"Right, right" Natalie says, slipping her hand away, wishing for just a few more minutes with him.
Reid clears his throat and brushes his hair out of his face before following Natalie towards Gina's room, where JJ is helping her how to work a TV remote. They call JJ over and show her the sketch before asking how Gina is doing. "It's a lot. She has no money, no family, a second grade education, not to mention a lifetime of PTSD to deal with" JJ says before multiple nurses and doctors rush past them, straight into Sheila's room.
"That's a lot of employees and that equipment is for when people are-" Natalie stammers over her words before Reid finishes her sentence, "When people are coding."
"What's coding?" Gina asks as she stands near the door, having heard everything they said. "Gina, you should go lay back down" Natalie says softly as JJ steps in the doorway, making sure Gina doesn't try to leave.
"Why? Is that Shiela's room?" Gina asks frantically as she tries her hardest to get a glimpse of what's going, but it's hard when 3 people are guarding her vision.
Gina sniffles in her tears and slides through Natalie and JJ, looking down the hall to Sheila's room, where her mother stands in the hallway with her hand over her mouth and tears in her eyes.
"No, no. Gina-" Natalie says as her and JJ gently grab her arms and hold her close, not wanting her to witness the possible death of Sheila when her only goal was to save them.
Suddenly, Sheila's mom begins shouting, her words sounding chocked and heartbroken. "Don't stop working on her! Please! No!" The women yell eagerly, roughly pushing the doctor, showing signs of anger, indicating that Sheila has passed away which only drives Gina over the edge.
"No! I have to help her! No! Sheila!" Gina cries out, JJ pulling her close to her and gently holding her head as she cries into her chest, mourning the death of her friend.
Later, Garcia checks small construction companies that have a blue van, and finds someone who resembles the unsub, Michael Clark Thompson. Gina quickly identifies him based on the photo.
Time for a massive manhunt to begin...
______________
Maya, Derek and Rossi stand before a group detectives and police officers, in front of the house where the girls were held captive, as they give the profile about the kidnapper, Michael Clark Thompson. They give some sort of back sorry on him and state that his mother died in childbirth, so he grew up with his father Nate, who was married and divorced 5 times.
Each of his fathers exes filed for divorce because of cruelty, adultery, or sometimes both. Apparently his father had predilection for prostitutes and was even arrested once for having assaulted one.
Michael Clark Thompson saw all of this as he grew and began to do what he seen his father doing. Because kids do what they see and would explain Michaels extreme misogynistic tendencies, along with his violent streak.
They go on and explain that Michael is smart. He was able to capture 3 girls and hold them for a number of years. But he's also manipulative. For years, those girls never tried to escape because they were under his hold, in an endless trance and was also able to control the women who owned the house Maya, Derek and Rossi are standing in front of now.
As the profile goes on, and Rossi begins to speak, he is cut off when a radio alert comes in that the van has been spotted. All of the cops immediately stop listening and run for their cars, along with Maya, Derek and Rossi, who hop in their black SUV towards the location.
The black SUV and two police cars arrive at the location of the van and see it still as statue. Maya carefully opens her door and places her hand on her gun as she exits the car, along with Derek, Rossi and the fellow officers who decided to tag along for the arrest. Derek and Maya are the first to arrive at the van and sees Michael having a nap in the front seat of the van.
Maya kicks her foot on the door, creating a loud bang. "Michael Clark Thompson, FBI!" Derek shouts as him and Maya point their guns from the drivers side of the car, and Rossi stays on the passenger side, showing Michael he has no where to go.
"Show us your hands, now!" Rossi shouts and Michael throws his hands out the window and carefully opens the door to the van before getting out of the car. The car slowly opens and Michael proceeds to get out, but when he steps out of the car he immediately makes a run for it and Maya and Derek holster their guns and look at each other in disbelief as they watch Michael, who hasn't even gotten that far, run.
Derek is about to run towards Michael, but Maya stops him and grabs a hefty stick off of the ground and throws it in Michaels direction, hitting him directly in the back before he can make it over the steep heel. Michael groans and slides down the hill, groaning from the pain in his back. Rossi chuckles as Maya and Derek walk towards Michael and look down at him as if he's the stupidest person they've ever met.
Maya then kicks Michael over on his stomach and allows Derek to handcuff him way tighter than they should be. "Ow, that hurts!" Michael shouts and Maya kicks him in the stomach, making him catch his breath and groan in pain.
"Aw, did that hurt?" Maya says before she spits on the grass near Michael's head and helps Derek lift him to his feet.
Meanwhile, Rossi and the police officers open the door to the back of the van and find Violet huddled in the corner, her breathing shaky and fear spread throughout her eyes.
_____
The team gathers together for an update and JJ explains that her and Natalie have been trying to talk to Violet, but it's been hard to get through to her since she's so eager to leave and see Michael. JJ points out that Violet is super-insistent that there's somewhere that she has to be but won't explain where.
Natalie then jumps to a conclusion, that Violet probably had a child out there somewhere and that's why she's so eager to leave with her "Dad" Michael so she can see them because he's the only person, who knows the exact location.
The team goes to talk to Michael and he states that wants a deal to reveal the location of the two other girls he's taken to a secret location. The deal is he be given minimum security for his sentence, and he wants to talk to Amelia, or as he calls her Violet.
And what choice do they have, but to go along with it?
The US attorney makes the deal, and the team walks Michael over to talk to Violet. During the conversation between Michael and Amelia she realizes what a monster he is and remembers her parents, so she attacks him, and Michael says that the deal is off.
On the upside, Amelia remembers a store they would stop at to get supplies for the torture dungeon, and it's incredibly close to it. If she can just get some details about it they'll be able to find the girls before it's too late.
Assuming that Michael is using the same 'take over a dead old person's house' scheme twice, they look for anyone who lives near a grocery store and Garcia was able to find a match just a few miles away from the store.
The team rush to the house, and it turns out the girls are fine. One of them was badly dehydrated since they hadn't gotten their supplies on time, but other than that, the girls will be okay. All of them will be with time...
Case Closed.
