"What grow through what we go through"
-Dhiman-
"Ah!" Maya squeals happily as Derek wraps his arms around her and moves her on top of him, her legs are resting on either side of him as they both lie in bed together, the night sky shining through their curtains. Maya smiles as her hands rise up his chest and stop at his neck before her lips meet his, both of them moving together in unison as Derek slowly slides his hand down her back, Maya moaning softly into the kiss and Derek swallowing it with ease.
Suddenly, Maya and Derek's phone buzz on both night stands next to their bed and their lips pull away, both of them letting out an annoyed groan before Maya reaches over, grabbing her phone and seeing Hotch needs the team at the office immediately.
"It says immediately" Maya informs, setting her phone back before she rests back on top of Derek, looking down at him as he wraps his arm around her body. "10 more minutes?" Derek asks and a smirk form on Maya's lips, "You don't even have to ask."
_____
The team gathers in the conference room where Cruz and Hotch explain the newest case that they have to get working on immediately. The new unsub kidnaps American families on vacation, kills them, and dumps their bodies.
So far, he's killed two families and he's quickly starting to evolve so they have to be quick with finding this unsub.
_____
The two teams meet on the tarmac, "Just so you know, this Matt Simmons is a sight to see" JJ whispers into Maya's ear, Derek whipping his head in their direction since he heard JJ loud and clear. "She's unavailable" Derek warns as they walk up to the jet and see two people, they already met at the BAU, which is Lambert and Gary, and a third party joining them.
Derek smiles widely as he places his hand out, giving Matt Simmons a handshake as he greets him. After the brief handshake with Derek, Matt turns to JJ and gives her a welcoming hug before facing Maya. "I don't think I've met you before" Matt realizes as he puts out his hand, Maya slipping her hand into his and giving him a friendly shake as she introduces herself.
"Wait? Regan?" Matt questions to which Maya tilts her head slightly before she hears a car start to approach in the parking area where the jet is.
The team whip their heads in the direction of the car before they see a women step out and it isn't until the SUV door closes and when they get a good look at who it is.
"Natalie?" Maya questions as Natalie walks up to the two teams and quickly wrapping her arms around her sister Maya, surprised to see her. "I didn't think I'd see you" Natalie says, pulling away from the hug. "Me either" Maya adds.
"So, Morgan, you married yet?" Matt asks, changing the topic of conversation, and making Maya and Derek eye each other awkwardly as the question is asked. "Oh, I see" Matt notices and zips his mouth shut before both teams realize it's time to get on the jet and head straight to Barbados.
"Hey, is Reid here?" Natalie asks and Maya shakes her head, "Him and our new addition, Kate, went out to the houses that the families stayed at. I'm sure he'll be around later" Maya answers as she notices Natalie sigh sadly before walking onto the plane. Maya forms a smirk on her face, knowing why Natalie is feeling that way and proceeds to shake her head knowingly.
The team is now on the plane, and they wonder how the killer controls his victims. There were no drugs in their systems when they were killed just a day after being kidnapped. Could it have been Rohypnol?
_____
The teams arrive in Barbados, and meet the local head of security, Sterling K. Brown. Gary explains that Greg's team is there because they're experts at family annihilator cases- "Hey, I feel like I know you from somewhere" Sterling states, pointing behind Natalie and pointing straight to Maya, who was trying her hardest to go unnoticed.
"I've been to Barbados once and twice. Maybe, I just have one of those memorable faces" Maya sighs, stuffing her hands in the pocket of her jeans as the team goes back on task and enters the house where they'll be working at.
"You've been to Barbados?" Derek asks quietly as him and Maya walk behind the rest of the team as Sterling shows them around the house. "Long story, but yes" Maya answers honestly, not wanting to go into details so she tries to keep the answer short and sweet for the time being and remain calm, and not bringing a lot of attention to herself.
Meanwhile, the rest of the team talks about how ten thousand Americans are victimized abroad every year, but no one talks about it because they don't want to risk tourism dollars just to start up conversation after hearing that ambassador wants to keep an old case, that's now reopened, quiet from the rest of the world while the team solves it in secret.
"What about the van?" Natalie asks, bringing up a new topic of conversation so they stayed focus and on task. "Tags were stole. Registered to a rotting VW bus" Sterling answers, Natalie shaking her head in disbelief as she writes down every piece of information, she learns in a notepad that she brought with her.
"What about the driver? Are there a lot of Americans driving shuttles around here?" JJ wonders until it comes to her attention that half the service industry are expats who work here all winter long.
"Well, if he was able to kidnap a whole family, and more than one, he's been here long enough to know his way around the back roads. This is a big ruse that's not easy to pull off at night" Natalie adds as the team nods their head in agreement around her before they decide to spilt up.
With Derek, JJ, and Matt heading to the abduction site, Hotch advises Maya to stay at the house with Natalie, him and the other team. "Maya... I feel like I know you" Sterling continues, not giving up on the fact he's heard and seen Maya before.
"Are you sure I can't go to the abduction site?" Maya asks, looking to Hotch before Sterling widens his eyes.
"Maya Regan. Joseph Perez. You two were like two peas in a damn pod" Sterling announces, making Maya's body tense up at the sound of his name. "You killed 3 people when you were here. Most of them doctors and you did it because Joseph Perez asked you too. I was here working on that case. We tried to find you, but you guys were gone and slipped right underneath our noses" Sterling states as he starts to walk towards Maya.
"I haven't done the best things in the past, but obviously those are put behind me now. So, I'd suggest you not bring it up ever again" Maya warns as Sterling scoffs in shock, "I suggest you watch who you're talking to" Sterling adds as he takes a step towards Maya, Derek swiftly intervening in between the two.
"And I suggest you take a step back" Derek warn, looking Sterling up and down as he backs away slowly.
"Maya, go with JJ, Matt and Morgan to the abduction site. We need to keep our heads focused on this case" Hotch adds, switching Maya's placement which Maya was secretly hoping for.
_____
Later, Matt, Maya, JJ, and Derek go to the airport and take a look around the abduction site. "There's plenty of hidden cameras, but no sign of the unsub inside" Derek notices as Maya adds that the family couldn't have been targeted specifically because the weather might've affected the family's chance on getting on shuttle earlier like they wanted, so the killer must have been there every night.
"This bastard could've been searching for his next victims. He's been here way before last night. This new family just happened to be the right one" Matt states as Derek nods his head, followed by a stressful sigh, "We need look at the security cameras that go all the way back to the first of April..."
The team gets info about the torture and finds that the fathers were probably whipped with a belt, which convinces them that he's not trying to replace the father, but rather trying to avenge abuse. So why kill the rest of the family?
The team tries to explain this in the profiling, announcing that he's mad at his own father for abusing him, so he murders the families in front of the father because... reasons. Also, they learn that Americans murdering people abroad to be super-talented and hard to catch, because it takes a huge number of skills to be able to blend in and work in a foreign country.
Garcia and Monty finally come up with a decent lead-every day the killer is there he uses a different license plate on his truck. Where is he getting all of them?
Then, in the family's house, where Reid and Kate still are, Reid thinks that the fact that the violence escalated in the Florida murder because the killer wanted to make a statement by punishing Americans on American soil.
Could his own abuse have happened in America?
_____
Later, Maya has just exited the bathroom and is immediately met by Natalie. "Oh, hey" Maya greets as she shuts the bathroom door behind her. "Did you really kill those three people Sterling was talking about?" Natalie asks as Maya sighs, slightly annoyed at the question, but realizes Natalie only knows so much about Maya's past and she just wants to know her sister now since she didn't get to know her years ago.
"Uh, yeah, I did. It wasn't my proudest moment, but I did kill those doctors. I was a hit woman, and I did for money and power. I did it for Jo-" Maya chokes up on her words, not being able to finish her sentence. "I've done things in my life that I regret and that's one of them" Maya explains, Natalie nodding her head as she talks.
"I have a tough past, Nat. I worked with a criminal and did bad things. I can't change what I've done or who I was, but I can change who I am to today and who I become tomorrow and that's all that matters."
"I was just going to say you sounded pretty bad ass in my opinion" Natalie states, creating a comforting and sisterly love atmosphere which Naya couldn't be anymore happy with.
_____
Looking at the map of Florida, the team tries to figure out how the killer could have gotten both salt and fresh water into the victim's lungs and they notice there's a combination of fresh and sea water in the lungs, suggesting that he was drowned in the Everglades, meaning that the killer loaded the family on to a boat, drove it all the way down to the everglades, drowned the father, then drove all the way back up to Orlando to dump the bodies in a field.
"What? Why on earth would he have done that? That's so much extra body moving for no reason" Natalie voices as she looks at the map from her seat. "I agree. You've already got them on a boat. The ocean is right there. This isn't a complicated, murderer" Maya adds as she steps next to JJ and stares at the map.
"This guy must have a really big boat and a lot of time on his hands."
_____
Over at the embassy, Lambert explains that the killer would likely be working just outside the legal jurisdiction of Barbadian waters, so that he wouldn't be able to be prosecuted for the crimes he committed there. JJ thinks that sounds like madness, but Lambert assures her that boats at sea are only bound by the law of the country whose flag they're flying, and he'd have picked one that doesn't have the resources to track him down and prosecute him.
The team finds the killer's van parked at a marina near the airport, and since it has a full tank of gas, they figure he must have filled it up the night of the murders.
Then Garcia calls with the information that most of the license plates were stolen from the same gas station, which is also near the airport.
Garcia can't find any unsolved cases 'involving water' that the killer might have been attached to. So, she tries looking for 'solved' cases where the killer wasn't prosecuted for some reason. When they review the security footage of the unsub at the gas station, Gary notices that the killer taps his forehead when he's saying someone is stupid, which is something that only Dutch people do and blue and orange are the colors of their national soccer team.
Now, the team knows they're looking for a Dutch guy now, which should hurry things along. And it does. Garcia finds a guy, Jerry Tidwell, who murdered his family while they were on vacation in Florida. His Dutch father brutally beat him but didn't do anything to his American second wife and his half-siblings. So, he killed all of them in a rage...
Now that they've got the guy's name, they locate his boat and fly out to arrest him.
_____
Maya and Derek are the first off, the boat and immediately hear screaming so they rush up the stairs, onto the dock, where they see Tidwell with a gun and he's holding it to the daughters' head while the mother and father are tied up on some railings.
"Drop the gun, now!" Derek shouts as the rest of the team gather off the boat and proceed to point their weapons in Tidwell's direction. "You have nowhere to go so let the girl go and surrender" Natalie urges as Maya looks around at the family, there's only 3 of them.
"Where's the boy?" Maya asks as the mother sobs uncontrollably, "He threw him overboard, please get my son!" The mother cries out and Maya widens her eyes as she holsters her gun and rushes to the side of the boat.
"No! No! Don't move, he deserves to die. These people deserved it!" Tidwell shouts as his gun is now pointed in Maya's direction, putting the team on edge. "Drop the gun, now!" JJ shouts, her grip tightening on her gun before a shot ring out and Maya shrieks before she unwillingly falls into the water, due to the force of the shot.
"Maya! Maya!" Derek shouts as he rushes to the side of the boat, wanting to catch her but she was already going down and splashed into the water. The daughter sniffles in tears before she bangs the back of her head against Tidwell's, causing him to stumble back.
"Get down!" JJ shouts and the daughter falls to the floor, allowing JJ to shoot Tidwell multiple times, killing him instantly.
"Where is she?" Natalie asks as she holsters her gun and rushes to the side of the boat with Derek, who quickly takes off his gear.
Meanwhile, Gary and JJ untie the father and mother, allowing them to reunite with their daughter.
Suddenly, groaning is heard in the distance and the team turns around, following the noise which is at the back of the boat. They see the little boy lying on the boat, coughing up water while Maya is bent over the edge, her lower body in the water while her upper body is out of it.
"Derek, right here" Hotch calls out and Derek stops what he's doing as him and the family of, currently 3 rushes to the back of the boat as well, seeing Maya and the little boy.
Derek rushes to them and helps the little boy to his feet before his parents and sister ran to him, happy to see him alive. "Maya..." JJ says softly as she helps Derek emerge Maya out of the water.
"Are you okay?" Derek asks as he holds Maya's face, seeing if there is any damage.
"It hit my- my vest" Maya breathes out as she places her hand on the bullet that went from Tidwell's gun right into the side of her vest. Derek lets out a breath of relief before he pushes Maya's soaking wet hair out of her face and stares down at her, admiring her bravery and loving every minute she's in his arms.
Case Closed...
~~
The same night, Natalie just exited the gas station after grabbing a couple snacks before she heads to New York to visit Olivia, who is still staying with her grandma, making new friends at her school and living a normal kid life like Natalie hoped she would. Natalie continues walking to her car when she notices that it's just her car and a black van in the parking lot.
She doesn't see anyone leave the black car and remembers she saw that van when she first pulled in. Natalie clears her throat and continues her journey to her car and when she gets there, she starts to put gas in her car since she paid for it inside the store.
As she waits, she hears the car door of the black van open. She tries not to look and keeps her eyes fixated on the gas pump, not wanting to engage in any unwanted conversation. But the longer Natalie stops their waiting, the more anxious and the bad feeling in her gut got.
The gas was done, and Natalie quickly pulled out the gas pump from her car and placed it back it it's place but when she turned around, she felt a white cloth covering her face. She widened her eyes and see a man standing in front of her, holding his hand to the back of her head so she had no kind of escape.
The man had a mask on, a scary mask, the type of mask you would see at a circus or on Halloween.
Natalie waved her hands frantically and tried to hit the man, but the more she moved around, the more tired she got until her eyes started to flutter close. She tried fighting the urge to fall asleep, but she couldn't. She was being drugged and kidnap and there was nothing she could about it.
After Natalie fell limp, the man held her body in his arms bridal style and stared up at the camera that was placed right above him. He tilted his head tauntingly before he started walking away, straight towards his black van where he forcefully place Natalie in the back and drove away without a care in the world.
One case down... another one opened...
"Why do we know, but act like we don't?"
