chapter forty-seven; The League's Best Team
" Your judgments skewed because you're a horrible quidditch player. "
MADELINE THOUGHT IT safe to assume when Lily Evans proposed the idea of butterbeer, that it would be them and them alone. But, when Madeline happily trotted out of the castle to find the redhead, she instead found Lily Evans chatting with James and Sirius.
"Didn't realize this was a group activity," Madeline announced, her pace slowing the closer she got.
Sure, James and Sirius had made up. But there were still a million questions in her mind; would James being around change how Sirius acted? Did James really forgive and forget? Were they back to being best mates or was it still walking on eggshells?
"Hope that's okay," Lily said as she pulled Madeline into a hug of greeting, "James wouldn't quit asking where I was going and once he heard the plan. . ."
"It's okay, yeah," Madeline assured, hugging Lily back, "Bit nervous."
"Oh, it'll be fine," The redhead said, lowering her voice, "If either of 'em get out of line, they'll have me to deal with."
Madeline smiled as she pulled away, snickering quietly with Lily as Sirius approached them. He looked between the duo with confusion written across his face, but laced his fingers with Madeline's nonetheless.
The walk to the Three Broomsticks was fine, James at some point had wrapped an arm around Lily and the two were strolling along happily as Madeline and Sirius boisterously made their way through Hogsmeade, their clasped hands swinging between them happily. James swore he'd never seen Madeline as happy as she was then, nearly hopping in each step, she and Sirius had begun humming a tune unfamiliar to his ears and nearly outright danced to their own pitchy melody.
"Kai got recruited for Puddlemere United," Madeline said after the four had settled into a booth.
"He deserves that," Lily smiled genuinely.
"Yeah, yeah, that's great and all, but the Chudley Cannons are still better."
"The Chudley Cannons are a horrible team," Madeline told James with a scoff, "They bloody changed their motto from 'We shall conquer' to 'Let's all just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best', if that doesn't say enough, you're clearly not listening."
"I'm a loyal fan, Maddie."
"To a shit team, James."
"You know," Lily said, propping her chin on her fist as the twins continued to bicker, "I assumed if anything, you and James would get caught up and Maddie and I would have to pass time."
"You clearly haven't been around them enough," Sirius said with a lopsided smile, "They'll argue about anything for hours— forget we're even here."
"Oh, wonderful."
"No, James, Puddlemere isn't my team, Ballycastle is, but Puddlemere's still better than Chudley!"
"Ballycastle— you're joking."
"At least they play well!"
"Your judgments skewed because you're a horrible quidditch player."
"I was the captain when Ravenclaw won the house cup!"
ϟ
"Oh, hello."
Remus Lupin had every right to be confused. He'd been out of the loop for a while, not knowing about any reconciliation until it nearly ran him over in the hallway. Lily Evans and Madeline Potter laughing brightly, with James Potter and Sirius Black on either side of them, arms full of miscellaneous sweets.
"Rem!"
The way Madeline shattered the tension between three best friends who no longer knew where they stood should be considered a professional art and or sport. Remus smiled as Madeline engulfed him in a hug, while James and Sirius could do nothing but laugh at her eagerness.
"I've been a bit of a shit friend, haven't I?" Madeline sighed, letting go of the boy and shoving her heavy hair back, "Everything's just been so busy, not that there's a reasonable excuse for—"
"Mads, it's okay," Remus cut her off quietly, "We have nearly every class together, I'm not wounded we haven't seen each other outside of that."
"You should be," She said seriously, making the boy smile once again.
"Uh, hi," Sirius cleared his throat after Madeline had fallen silent, "We owe you a bit of an explanation, huh?"
"You could say that," Remus nodded, "You've clearly left me in the dark."
"We're all alright now!" James announced happily, "Took a bit of chatting, but we—" He gestured between himself, his sister, and his best friend, "Are alright!"
"Right," Remus said quietly.
"What's wrong, Rem?"
"Nothing," Remus assured Madeline, "I've got a paper due, so I should go finish it."
"Oh, do you want—"
Sirius was cut off as Remus briskly made his way past the group. He sent Madeline a pitiful frown, making her lips curve downward as well.
"What did you do?"
"Why do you assume I did something?!" James questioned Lily offendedly.
"James."
"Okay, fine!" James sighed, "When I found out he knew I said some things I shouldn't have, but I'd never say them now."
"Go apologize."
"But, Lils—"
"James!"
James Fleamont Potter was known for bravery, but somehow the intertwined voices of Lily Evans and Madeline Potter shrunk him down to a child being reprimanded for bad behavior. He didn't dare argue, turning on his heel and taking after Remus quickly.
"So—"
"You should go, too."
"What, why?" Sirius asked worriedly, his brows knitted tightly, making the girls snicker slightly. "Oi!"
"Because Remus deserves to have all his friends back," Madeline said, shrugging gently, "Trust me."
Sirius sighed in defeat, pressing a kiss to Madeline's cheek before jogging off after his closest friends.
"They took our sweets."
"I've realized that after sending Sirius off."
"Merlin's Beard, we can never win."
Neither Madeline nor Lily were quite sure what transpired on that day in the late spring of 1978. They didn't know where the Marauders went or what was said between them, all they were aware of was the four boys were back together by the following morning.
Granted, James had somehow earned a cut on his cheekbone and Sirius had a huge bruise on the back of his arm, but they were together. They were happy and chatting and being rowdy as per usual and let out obnoxious cheers as Lily and Madeline joined them and nothing else seemed to matter aside from James' hogging of the butter and Madeline's refusal to pass him another piece of toast.
