trois. — eyes on the road!
"You're shitting me?" Letha spluttered our staring at Klaus in awe, "You actually met Vincent Van Gough!"
The sun shined down on her face through the windshield with an unrelenting ferocity, warming her skin as she gazed out the window, a sugary strawberry lace between her teeth. The trio had been on the road together for a few weeks now, and Letha could safely say that any lingering fear she had of the hybrid was gone. Logically she knew he could rip her throat out anytime he wanted, but he didn't seem like he wanted to. She understood what he meant by Stefan's 'mood' he was grumpy and sarcastic, the chip on his shoulder doing nothing to deter Letha's mood however.
She'd never once left Mystic Falls, this was a new chapter in her life and she was excited for it, even if it was starting out from the hinges of betrayal. Letha was glad that she'd ditched her old phone and got a new one, she was certain Elena had some sort of tracking on the thing.
Besides she'd left a note;
Leaving forever. Don't look for me, I know everything.
Sorry Jen x
Even when running away she didn't have the heart to be too mean. She felt immensely disappointed in her siblings. They were suppose to stick together through thick and thin, yet they lied and manipulated her for who knows how long. That's the thing — no one fights dirtier or more brutally than blood; only family knows it's own weaknesses, the exact placement of the heart. The tragedy is that one can still live with the force of hatred, feel infuriated that once you are born to another, that kinship lasts through life and death, immutable, unchanging, no matter how great the misdeed or betrayal. Blood cannot be denied, and perhaps that's why we fight tooth and claw, because we cannot—being only human—put asunder what God has joined together. They were unpredictable, Letha loved the freedom of the open road while also missing her home, yet what would they do if she came back? Make her forget again?
At this point she was more afraid of her family than she'd ever been of Klaus.
She suddenly realised that Klaus had in fact answered her question, Letha grinned an awkward smile back at him her cheeks heating to a cherry red as she noticed she'd completely zoned out. It was an unfortunate habit of hers.
Klaus took his eyes off the road for a moment to stare at the endearing girl he had met only two weeks ago. Letha Gilbert was a strange girl he'd come to find, optimistic and bubbly she didn't seem to let anything get her down on the outside, but he noticed the way she'd get lost in her own head at times — the way her eyes would become a swirl of melancholy when she thought no one was looking.
Speaking of her eyes he'd never seen any quite hers in his long thousand years on this planet. Her brown eyes were dark, rich, and decedent; they reminded him of freshly turned earth after rain, yet when the sunlight hit them — like right in this moment — suddenly they become brilliant and clear, like perfectly worn sea glass or water in a stream running over driftwood and stone.
How he wanted to paint those eyes.
The car suddenly drifted slightly into the next lane, the honking of another car snapping him out of his own daydreaming and making the young girl release a startled scream. Stefan reminded emotionless in the backseat as he typed away on his phone ( she thought he might have been tweeting about how much he hated Klaus ).
"Jesus shit!" Her hand rested over her heart as it beat like it was going to rip itself from her body any minute, "I know you guys are immortal and all, but I am not as durable."
The hybrid simply let out a boisterous laugh, a smirk adoring his pretty pink lips, "Don't worry, I'll protect you."
Stefan didn't even look up as his monotone voice came from the back seat, he worried about his girlfriends sister and how close she was getting to the hybrid, but there wasn't much he could do, "Do you guys want me to give you some space?"
Letha cleared her throat softly, her voice soft as usual — she was always used to being quiet after being in Elena's shadow her entire life, even her scream before was simply quiet, "There's a motel we can pull into a few miles up the road, you've been driving for ages now and we all need our rest," Klaus opened his mouth ready to argue, he was impatient to make his army, and was to stubborn to admit that even the original hybrid got tired sometimes, "besides Stefan is starting to stink back there — we could all do with a shower."
Stefan leaned closer to her seat an offended look on his face which she responded to with a small shrug, Letha offered him a strawberry lace and a sweet smile in repentance, the grumpy vampire leaning back in his seat as he ate his sweet quietly.
When they finally pulled into a motel, that looked like it had seen better days but was most certainly not as bad as some of the ones they had been to, the sun was setting and Letha was ready to crash.
The lady at the front dress was a rather stout woman, her eyes glaring at Letha with displeasure as she noticed her two male companions. Klaus glared back at her as he stepped up to the desk, his own glare much more intimidating, "We need two rooms, one with a double bed and the other with two double."
This woman seemed to have no self preservation skills drilled into her as she rolled her eyes at the hybrid, and rubbed at her smeared lipstick, "That'll be—,"
"—free." Klaus interrupted, his pupils dilating, and his voice sinister.
"It most certainly will not." Letha dug around her purse before pulling out her card and pushing past Klaus. She hated the idea of compulsion, the complete and utter control these creatures had over mere humans was worrying and Letha couldn't stand by and watch other people slowly lose their minds or jobs because they'd been compelled to do something they're boss wouldn't like.
The three got up to the rooms, Stefan having one for himself, the bloodlust was too much for him, he couldn't be trusted alone with Letha, and Klaus was too paranoid to leave the defenceless human on her own, he had many enemies this was the safest idea in his mind.
Throwing her bags down on the floor, Letha bellyflopped onto her bed. Not bothering to shower or change, her mind already lost to a world of dreams, showering could wait. Everything could wait when it came to sleep.
"Goodnight, love."
AUTHORS NOTE!
I want to actually build the relationship up between Klaus and Letha before we get to the season three stuff, since there's two months where Stefan and Klaus are together before they reach the Smokey Mountains.
What would you guys like to see Klaus and Letha do together?
Remember to vote, comment, and or share — I cannot stress enough how much it means to me!
