4.5 - rooftop

12:34 AM

Luke was amazed at the stupidity of some of the people in this town.

He went to the tallest building he could find and ran around back, while dragging Skylar behind him of course, and easily got the door open without any struggle at all. It didn't take them long once they got inside to find another door leading to a staircase - that was also unlocked - that lead them all the way up to the roof.

"Have you done something like this before?" Skylar asked, turning around in a circle so she could get a full view of the stars above her.

"Huh?" Luke questioned, having spaced out for a moment. "Oh, yeah, the boys and I used to...sometimes, before things got really crazy."

Luke really regretted what he had become lately, because when he thought about it hard enough he honestly missed the boys more than anything. They all used to be so happy, traveling the world together as a band, but ever since Luke decided that he was better than everyone else, things became miserable for the other boys. They hardly ever got to have fun on their own anymore, because Calum, Michael, and Ashton were always too convened with Luke's whereabouts to go party themselves. Luke had never really thought about how his reckless behavior could affect his friends.

"Oh." Skylar nodded. She stopped spinning around and turned to face Luke, who had his hands buried deep in his pockets and was staring at the ground.

He was thinking, he'd been doing a lot of thinking ever since they were at the tattoo parlor. Mostly about Skylar, and how he was so scared that he was going to hurt her. As much as he hated it, he knew deep down that he would eventually. It may not be the next day, or the day after that, but there was going to come a time when Luke would fuck up again and hurt Skylar. It was honestly inevitable. That was Luke and that was how things had always been. He fucked up, and he ruined things for other people.

Skylar slowly made her way over to Luke and wrapped her arms around his waist from the side, burying her face into his chest. Luke tried to wrap his arms around her as well but instead he found himself bringing his hands up to his eyes again, because he was crying and wanted to get rid of the tears before Skylar noticed.

Luke just couldn't stop fucking crying.

"Do you know what time it is?" Skylar asked softy, startling Luke out of his thoughts.

He reached into the pocket of his jeans and pulled his phone out - which now had 9% battery left - and checked the time. "'Around 12:40." He mumbled.

"Alright." Skylar nodded. She was being too quiet for Luke, he didn't like it. He wanted her to start talking, and maybe distract him from how sad he was. He was acting like such a baby and he didn't like that either. He was Luke Hemmings, since when did Luke Hemmings go around crying over dumb shit?

"Here, let's sit down." Luke said, backing away from Skylar. He sat down on the rooftop and then waited for Skylar to join him before he decided to just lay down. It was easier to see the stars that way.

"Are you tired?" Skylar asked. She cuddled up next to Luke, and he lazily wrapped his arm around her shoulders so she could rest her head on Luke's chest. He was hardly even paying attention anymore, he was too consumed in all of his thoughts.

Luke was going to mess things up somehow and he couldn't get that out of his head. Even if he did continue things with Skylar after they got back home, he knew that things weren't going to run as smoothly as they were now. They were basically in their honeymoon phase right now, and that wasn't going to last forever. Luke wasn't what Skylar needed.

"Just a little." Luke said quietly,

"You know..." Skylar started, sitting forward a little. Luke realized that he was being rude by not paying much attention to her and sat up as well, ready to listen to whatever she had to say. "You said you would sing to me and you still haven't."

"Oh, I did, didn't I?" Luke chuckled, running a hand through his hair. It was flat against his forehead now from their little beach adventure earlier and bothering him because it kept getting in his eyes.

"Can you?" Skylar asked, pulling Luke's sweatshirt tighter around her. Luke was still freezing, but he didn't want to be rude and ask for his sweatshirt back.

"Maybe later?" Luke said, almost as a question. He really wasn't in the mood to sing right now, and that wasn't Skylar's fault, but he really hoped that she would stop bugging him about it. He wished that she would just accept that he didn't want to sing.

"You've been saying that all night." Skylar sighed.

"My throat's sore." Luke lied. He had told himself earlier that he would stop with all of the small lies to get him out of things, but he couldn't help himself. He did not want to sing.

He was cranky and sad and tired and kind of hungry, if he sang now he wouldn't even enjoy himself.

"You promised." Skylar mumbled, which made a lump form in Luke's throat. Of course he promised, that's what Luke did. He made promises that he couldn't keep.

"When we get back to the hotel." Luke assured her, though he knew that he would just make up another excuse once she asked again.

Luke was such an asshole.

"Are you alright, Luke?" Skylar asked softly, scooting closer to him. She must have noticed how weird he was acting. Luke honestly felt like he was having a panic attack, he was finding it hard to breath and he couldn't think straight.

What had he done? All day he'd been leading this perfectly innocent girl on just because he knew that she was going to play along with it. Luke wasn't going to be able to keep any of the promises he made, that wasn't him. That was crazy.

When they got back to Australia they'd probably meet up once, maybe twice if things seemed to work out well. But with Luke's fame and Skylar needing to get her life together there weren't many options for them to have a stable relationship. He was going to have to end things with her eventually or maybe it would even be the other way around, either way one of them - most likely both - would end up hurt.

Luke hated that he'd come to this realization, but he knew that this was how things were going to have to be.

"I'm fine." Luke nodded. He gave Skylar a soft smile and reached out to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear, like he always did. He really did love her, a lot, but he couldn't tell her. Not when he knew more than she did.

"Do you want to go back to the hotel now?" Skylar asked.

"No, no." Luke shook his head quickly, which startled Skylar.

The sooner they went back to the hotel, the sooner they went to sleep. And when they woke up in the morning they would have to go to the airport again and get on a plane, and Luke knew what was coming after that. No, he wanted to spend as much time with Skylar that he possibly could before they had to go home.

"We can go do something, right?" Luke asked urgently, like he was trying his hardest to get Skylar to listen to him. He knew she was tired and probably wanted to sleep as well, but Luke just couldn't let her. He wanted to make the most of this night.

"It's late, I don't know..." Skylar shrugged. "I don't think anything's open anyway. I thought you were tired?"

"I was tired, but not anymore." Luke said, grabbing Skylar's hands.

"I don't think there's anything left for us to do." Skylar let out a laugh as she stood up, and Luke went with her, still clutching her hands.

"Skybaby, there's always something!" Luke yelled, chuckling nervously. She was right, there wasn't anything to do and Luke was running out of ideas as well. This was it, this was the end for them.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Skylar questioned.

"Fine, I'm fine." Luke said. He looked down at the ground and then back to Skylar, then up at the stars again.

He was really panicking right now, and he didn't know how to stop it. He felt pathetic, he was Luke Hemmings, he wasn't supposed to panic about things as stupid as this.

"I just want to spend as much time with you tonight as I can." Luke spoke quickly, and then leaned in and unexpectedly kissed Skylar on the lips, which caught her off guard again.

"Hey, calm down. It's not like tonight is the last time we're ever going to see each other." Skylar laughed again and pulled away from Luke. She brought a hand to the back of his neck and let her fingers tangle themselves in the ends of his hair, and it felt so good to Luke, he never wanted her to stop. He didn't answer Skylar, he just came forward and kissed her again, because he didn't know what to tell her.

"Right?" Skylar whispered, pulling back for just a quick second to ask her question. Luke attached their lips again, not wanting to talk about this. He was so scared of losing her.

Eventually Luke nodded, his lips still on Skylar's, and he answered her. "Right."

He had never hated himself more.
