Chapter Thirty Six (FINAL CHAPTER)

----------------------

Dedication: Olaflover28 for suggesting the song 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' (the Glee version) reminds her of Sadie and Casey!

Recap:

I squeezed my eyes shut, gripping the railing as if I was about to fall.

"Hi Sadie."

The voice was deep, like it had been when he spoke to me in my room. Goose bumps scattered across my skin.

"Casey," I whispered brokenly.

"You didn't really think it was him, did you?"

I spun on my heel, feeling like my heart was ready to leap outside my chest at any moment, my eyes snapping open.

It wasn't Casey.

----------------------

"You..." I trailed off, staring with disbelief.

I felt my mind screaming as my thoughts raced. He had been cleared. His face...

"It's you...?" I hesitantly asked.

"Yep," Owen replied, a menacing smirk twisting onto his lips. "You've always thought you were too good for me, haven't you, Sadie?"

I gripped the railing, my head spinning. "This can't be right. Josh punched you. You should have a mark on your face."

"Who said I'm the only one involved?" Owen asked, his eyes now showing something I'd never seen before: cruelness.

"He's not even alive, is he?" I whispered, my words hardly audible, getting caught in the wind.

"Of course not, you fucking idiot," he snapped, his fists balling at his sides. "You killed him! You were his best friend, how could you not know someone is suicidal?"

Silent tears rolled down my cheeks as his words felt razor sharp, slicing me open with each syllable.

"You didn't even know him, or me, how could you say something like that?" I cried, my eyes burning. "You have no right to have a say on something you know nothing about."

"I know all about it."

"I had no idea Casey was going to do it. I promise. I had no suspicions..." I began wiping furiously at my cheeks.

"Of course not, you're just so innocent," Owen spat.

"You did all this, because you blame me?" I sobbed, my hand pressed hard against my chest. "You have messaged me, followed me, assaulted me, because you blame me?"

He shrugged.

"Wait..." I trailed off, things starting to click into place. "How do you know everything?"

"I told him," a new voice said.

I whipped my head to the left, to see Isaac approaching us. His steps were unhurried as he walked, a blank expression on his face. A dark, purple bruise gathered around the left side of his nose.

"Of course," I whispered. "You've always hated me, haven't you?"

"Yeah. I have." he agreed. "It's your fault my brother is dead."

"Why did you act like you liked me? That you cared about me?" I hiccupped, feeling breathless, dizzy and disorientated, all at once.

"You wouldn't suspect it was me then, would you?" he laughed humourlessly, taking another taunting step towards me. "And I wanted to get inside that head of yours and see if you had any idea he was going to do it. Or why."

"You need help, Isaac. You can't possibly think any of this is my fault. I was left behind, just like you were!"

"I was left in the dark. I was just his annoying, younger brother who was never allowed to know anything. You on the other hand, knew everything. You could have stopped it, but you didn't. You ruined my family."

How had I missed it? The angry outburst at the bowling alley, sending Amelia after me to teach me a lesson, telling me the wrong directions, so I ended up in Casey's room, when I discovered he was two-timing me...

"You're off screwing other guys, living your life, while I'm here, stuck in my own fucking misery." he sneered, finally showing some emotion through his stoic exterior.

"What's Josh got that I don't?" Owen suddenly piped up. "Why did you blow me off, again and again? Too good for someone like me?"

I let out a dry, humourless cackle. "For fuck sake Owen, this is a bit extreme for a crush."

"He only joined halfway," Isaac spoke for him. "It was me and only me, for a long time. But after you fucked Owen over, he came to me."

"What now, then, huh?" I shouted to them. "Are you going to kill me? Is that what you want?"

"No," Isaac said quietly, shaking his head. "You're going to jump."

I flinched, my back hitting the railing. My heart stuttered in my chest as I took in his words, the cold wind stinging my skin.

"What?"

"You're going to commit suicide, Sadie and I am not going to do a thing to stop you. Just like you didn't do anything to stop Casey."

A few weeks ago, I would have. I would have jumped with no hesitation, but now, after gaining the little strength that I have, I know what it's like to fight back. I know what it's like to be able to live and enjoy being around others. I've tasted the opportunity to move on and I'm not ready to let it go.

"You waited too long. When I was in hospital, I was ready. I wanted to die. Why didn't you get me to do it then?"

"Because I don't want you to want to commit suicide. I want you to now, after you've gotten better. After you've realised that maybe, life is living after all. Because now, it's going to make it that much worse for you." he bit out, his teeth gritted, his jaw clenched. "You're going to pay for the grief you've caused my family."

"You're messed up."

"We all are, Sadie."

"I'm not doing it," I bit back, glaring at him.

"Yes. You are."

"If you want me die, you're going to have to push me," I snapped.

His eyes blazed as he stared at me, contemplating his next move

"We could take her," Owen suggested, turning to Isaac.

"Take her where?" Isaac frowned and my eyes began searching for some kind of exit.

I doubt I can out-run the both of them, but if I can just get to my car...

Owen shrugged. "I don't know. Anywhere."

"Or we could just end her," Isaac sneered, his cold eyes latching onto mine. "Like she ended my brother."

A car drove towards us. I began to scream, running for the car. It swerved, before speeding off.

"No!" I cried, running after it.

Two arms reefed me back, before forcefully shoving me to the ground.

"Nice try," Owen spat, glaring down at me.

"It's too public here," Isaac sighed.

"If you take me, I will scream," I warned, glowering at Isaac. "I will kick, and scream and fight you the entire time."

"Might be a bit hard if I cut your fucking tongue out of your head!" Isaac shouted into my face, before backhanding me.

A scream left me as I fell back, my head bouncing onto the cement floor beneath me. I groaned, clutching at my head.

"Fuck this, I'm doing it," Isaac snapped, dropping to his knees.

"Isaac, don't. We'll get caught," Owen insisted, grabbing his shoulder.

Suddenly, Isaac whirled around, pointing a knife in his direction. "Touch me again and I will kill you, too."

He had a crazed, possessed look in his eyes. Owen shrunk back, his lips parted.

"Don't use the knife on her, then," he said cautiously.

It was then, I realised how mentally scarred Isaac really was. The veins in his arms and neck were protruding. His hands were shaking as his eyes blazed with untamed fury. He glanced down to me, his upper lip twitching as he tried to regain control.

He was completely unhinged.

Isaac's long, sharp fingers bit into my arm as he dragged me to my feet. I whimpered at the pain, clenching my teeth together.

His hands went around my already sore throat and began to squeeze. I clawed at him, trying to get him off me. The hard metal dug into my back as I fought him, trying to keep my feet firmly planted on the concrete.

This was it. I'm going to die.

The more Isaac's fingers tightened around my throat, the more I thought my time was up. I let my eyes close, seeing Casey's face in my mind.

"Owen," I rasped, finding strength for one last attempt to save myself. "Help me!"

Owen's eyes were wide as he stared.

"Isaac, you're going to kill her. It's going to look like murder."

As I opened my eyes and stared into the dead eyes of Isaac, I knew he was gone. He was not with us anymore. He was lost in his own misery, anger and hate.

All of a sudden, loud, thundering footsteps could be heard, before Isaac was ripped off of me.

Josh.

He threw Isaac to the ground, pummelling his fists into his face. Two police officers were seconds behind him.

"Knife," I hoarsely whispered, pointing to Isaac.

The next officer grabbed a shocked Owen, ripping his arms painfully behind his back.

"I was trying to save her!" Owen cried out but the officer ignored him as he began to say his rights.

The other officer, reached for the knife swiftly, before tossing it away from all of us.

"Oh my God," I whispered, rubbing my sore neck, my eyes clinging to Josh. "How did you know where to find me?"

He wrapped his arms around me.

"When I realised you weren't at school, I rang the police. I wasn't taking any chances. They went to your house, to see if you were there, but your car was gone. Your back door lock is broken, by the way. I asked Marissa where you could have gone and she told me to come here. She said this was where Casey did it and where you tried to, that time. I told the police where I was heading and they followed me here. Thank God, it looked like we got here just in time. Was he trying to push you over?"

I began sobbing into his chest. "It was him. He's the one who did everything. He wanted me to jump."

Josh's arms constricted around me.

The second officer was saying Isaac's rights to him, but his attention wasn't on the officer. His eyes were on me, with a look of pure, undeniable hatred.

"Never liked this guy," Josh said, gesturing to Isaac. "But Owen? I didn't see that coming. I thought he was just a guy crushing on you."

I buried my face into his chest, unable to think properly and try to understand how Owen could do this to me. Not that I understand Isaac's twisted mind, but he kind of had a valid reason. Owen is just a pathetic coward, who doesn't know how to take no for an answer.

The first officer walked hesitantly over to me.

"Are you alright?"

I nodded weakly. "Thank you. You saved my life."

"No, he did," he said, pointing to Josh. "And that girl we spoke to. They figured out where you were."

Tears were falling down my face. I took a step back from Josh's safe, warm arms, to wipe my face.

"Ma'am, when you're ready, I'm going to need you to come with me."

I nodded limply as he gave me a tight-lipped smile.

After a few moments, I heard them walk away. Owen's head was hanging as he let the officer take him. Isaac, however, was struggling, sending looks of heated hatred over his shoulder at me. He began screaming, his words hitting me like a razor.

"You filthy, fucking whore!" he screamed, restlessly pulling his arms from the officer's hold. "I'll never be finished with you. You killed my brother. I will fucking end you!"

I sobbed as I watched the officer struggle with him as they got closer to the police wagon.

Josh's hand rubbed soothingly against my back as we watched them get into the car. I felt sick to my stomach.

I remember Isaac being the innocent kid of the family, always friendly, never getting into trouble.

I don't recognise what he has become.

Peering up through my wet eyelashes, I met Josh's eyes.

"Is it over?" I whispered brokenly.

"Yeah," he smiled, running his thumb down my cheek. "It's over."

I'm sorry, I really sucked at making this whole thing suspenseful and thought out... because this wasn't how I was going to end it originally. But yeah, even though I think it's really crappy, I hope you enjoyed reading the story!

There will be an epilogue coming soon!

Thanks for reading this story and coming on this journey with me <3
