Chapter Twenty Four
--------------------------
Dedication: Profashionall for the amazing cover! Thank you!
Recap:
Shaking my head, my thoughts whirling in my mind restlessly, I wandered towards my house. As I entered, I continued to rub my finger over my pulsing lips.
"What the hell was that?" My mother asked, her voice venomous. "Please don't tell me I just saw what I think I did."
I blinked at her, as she stood there, her hands on her hips.
Well, shit.
--------------------------
"How could you be so stupid?"
"Define stupid in this situation."
"You've been down this road before, Sadie," my mother said in a low, eerily calm voice. "It almost destroyed you. Don't do this again."
"Why, you think Isaac is going to kill himself to?" I pressed, my upper lip curling as my hands balled into fists at my side. "Do you think I drive people to want to do that?"
"Of course not-"
"Then why the hell would you make it out that if I decide to be with Isaac, his fate will be sealed like his brother's?"
"I'm just saying-"
"You're my mother. You should support me and ask me questions and protect me. Not make me feel even worse about the decision I've made."
"Just let me-"
"Save it," I snapped, holding my hand up in a stop signal. "I've heard enough."
Turning on my heel, I stomped towards the front door and slammed it hard behind me. I threw myself into Casey's car and peeled from my driveway as fast as I could. My hands were shaking as I gripped the steering wheel.
I drove through town and angled my car so that it was facing the river. I let out a slight sob as I leant forward, the last 24 hours catching up to me.
Owen.
Marissa.
Isaac.
My mother.
It was all too much.
Closing my eyes, I pressed my forehead firmly against the steering wheel and thought back to a time where it was so much simpler.
"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
"When I grow up?" I snickered, watching Casey's hand play with my fingers.
"Yeah," he said, rolling his eyes. "You know what I mean."
"Umm... I would love to be a singer."
"I love you, but you can't sing for shit," he stated honestly. "Let's be realistic here."
"Hey!"
"The truth hurts," he shrugged.
"I like to write." I stated simply. "I think becoming a published author would be cool."
"I like your stories," he murmured, his thumb caressing my palm, making jolts of electricity spike through my veins. "Especially when I'm in them."
"You're always in them," I laughed.
"Of course. I make an awesome protagonist."
"Look at you, using smart words," I said to him, sticking my tongue out.
"Oi!" a voice suddenly exclaimed. Isaac busted through the door, his hair dripping wet. He had his wet suit on, unzipped down to his waist. He sat heavily at the end of the bed, his hair spraying water droplets onto my legs. "Check out this pic Hennessy got."
I stretched my neck to see as Isaac tilted his phone to us. It was a photo of him surfing. An impressive one, at that.
"That looks awesome," I grinned. "Hennessy takes good photos."
"Profile pic worthy or?" he questioned seriously.
"You're such a loser." Casey said sadly.
We both ignored him.
"Definitely," I agreed. "Definitely profile pic worthy, I mean. You're not a loser."
"Thank you Sadie," Isaac said to me, sending a pointed look in his brother's direction. "You're too nice to be with this guy."
"So they say."
"Who says?" Casey asked with a frown.
No one, of course. I was nothing, compared to Casey. Everyone loved and adored him. I was just "that annoying chick that's around him all the time".
Isaac smirked, before pushing from the bed.
"Movie night in my room with popcorn, if anyone wants to join," Isaac announced as he began to leave the room. "And by anyone, I mean Sadie. You can sleep in my room, if you want."
I rolled my eyes. "Tempting offer."
"Beat it," Casey dismissed, leaning back into his pillows.
Isaac sent me a wink, before he left.
"He is so in love with you," he muttered. "It's gross."
Just not the Williams' brother I want.
"He is not," I laughed. "It's just a joke, Case. He does it to stir you up."
"Doesn't work," he muttered.
"Sure it doesn't."
"Where were we?" he asked. "Oh yeah. Writer, hey?"
"Hmm." I nodded. "Haven't thought too much into it. Might take a writing class at university."
"I think you are an excellent writer."
"Thanks," I grinned. "What do you want to do?"
"I want to study medicine."
"Not this again."
"I'm serious," he said, his eyes opening. "I want to do something that helps people. Paramedic, doctor... something."
"Well, if you want to put in the time and work, go for it." I replied, not completely convinced he could stay focused on one topic for the amount of time needed to complete a degree. Especially medicine. "It's a rewarding career."
"Oh yeah."
I let my eyes drift close as I lent back into him. His skin felt warm against mine. I loved touching him. I craved it. I couldn't get enough of being close to him. Even close, was not quite close enough.
"You know what?"
"What?" I asked him, half dozing off.
"No matter what I end up doing, I know I'll be okay."
"Yeah?"
"Because you'll be there right beside me."
A sleepy smile spread across my face. I tugged at his hand, so that our fingers entwined. I let myself fall to sleep.
Which was easy, because I was in his arms.
My phone vibrating on my leg jolted me from my trance. I slowly shifted back into my seat and let out a groan, my body having cramped being in that position for so long.
I withdrew my phone, dread accumulating in my veins. Who would it be? My mother, Marissa? There was no one I wanted to talk to right now.
Not even Isaac.
With a sigh, I unlocked my phone. My stomach clenched and I felt the colour drain from my face.
Casey: I thought you were better than this.
I sat there, completely frozen.
My heart began to race. My grip tightened on my phone as I stared down at it, a wave of nausea rolling over me.
Casey: My own brother?
I felt sick. He knew. Of course he knew. He knew everything.
My head was spinning. I felt faint as I stared down at my phone, waiting for the final text, that was going to break me.
Casey: Now it's my turn.
I swallowed uneasily, my throat becoming unusually dry.
Casey: It's my turn to NEVER forgive you.
-------------------
Hey guys! Just an update: I have been offered a full-time position at a new job, which is obviously going to take up A LOT of my time. However, writing is a massive passion of mine so I will try to write as often as I can. I apologise in advance if updates are not as regular as they used to be.
What do you think of the argument between Sadie and her mum? Who's side are you on?
And what do you think about Casey's opinion on the situation?
