Chapter 5
[AN] Warning: A really boring chapter.
The Prince ran out the hall quickly, chasing after the mysterious girl. It was just a simple question about the keychain, so why did she run away, if she wasn't hiding anything? Whatever it was, it just made him more suspicious.
Kris followed the steady footsteps. But suddenly she was gone, as if she had just disappeared into thin air.
"Damn it!" he yelled in frustration. How could he lose his target in his castle, his home? That only made the young Prince more curious. The girl seemed to know the castle very well. It was obvious that she had been in the castle often. No matter though, he needed to find her.
Amelia's heart jumped like crazy as she watched Kris through the half opened door. Luckily, the Prince hadn't noticed her while passing by. Silently, she thanked god that she had remembered a shortcut. Good that she used to play in the castle so much that she knew it like her own house. After so many years, it still felt like home.
After making sure that Kris had left, Amelia breathed out in relief, turning around to lean against the door. Just then, her eyes widened in shock and her hands started to shiver. She felt a cold flash through her body and in the same second she froze, as tears fell down her cheeks. She was in the royal library.
"Mommy?" the young Amelia called, looking around as she walked through the hallway. It was getting late and Kris had to leave for his riding lesson. The little girl was alone in the giant castle.
"Mommy, where are you?" she shouted again. She had been looking for her mother for over an hour and she was still nowhere to find. Amelia's small legs were getting tired and she was hungry. She just wanted to find her mother and get home. Then, her mother would cook something delicious and they would wait for her father and she would tell him how much fun she had today or how 'mean' Kris was. Just like every day. But all that never happened. From that day on, nothing was ever the same again.
Amelia discovered people standing before the library, everybody trying to look inside. Everyone was shocked and was talking about some poor woman.
"Mommy?" the young girl called, causing everybody to look at her. It suddenly became too silent. No one said a word. Then, everyone's expression changed from shock to sadness. Amelia came closer and dropped the teddy bear in her arms when she saw it. Her mom was lying on the cold floor, unmoving and covered in blood. Her face was pale and her eyes were closed.
Why was she sleeping on the floor? It's cold there.
Kris stopped as he heard someone's crying coming from the library. Carefully, he stepped closer and looked though the half opened door. Because of the bright moonlight and because the person was standing with his back to him, Kris couldn't tell who it was, only that it was a beautiful figure of a young woman. Her crying was quiet, but still he could hear the pain. Never had he heard someone crying like that, as if she was in so much pain that she wasn't able to cry out loud. The Prince didn't know what to do. Should he talk to the girl? Should he go away and leave her alone? Maybe he should ask the poor girl what was wrong.
Just as Kris opened the door, stepping in, the girl turned around. Within a second the Prince recognized the person in front of him. It was the same girl from the ball, the one he had been looking for the whole night. His hand formed a fist and he felt his face got hotter. Only the sight of that girl could get him mad.
Kris came closer to her, grabbing her wrist to make sure he wouldn't lose her again. The Prince's cold touch made the girl flinch and step back.
"Prince Kris," she said nervously.
"Do you know how long I've been running around, looking for you?" he asked angrily.
The girl kept silent.
"Are you playing with the Prince? Do you think it's fun?" Kris yelled angrily, tightened his grip, causing the girl to whine in pain.
"Kris, you're hurting me," the mysterious girl stuttered.
"Please let me go," she said again with a brittle voice, trying to free herself from the Prince, but that only made Kris angrier.
"What? Do you want to escape again? Are you kidding me?" Kris raised his voice, slammed the younger girl against the bookshelf roughly, causing some books to fall down.
"What do you want from me?"
Kris pulled the girl close to him, forcing her to look straight into his eyes.
"You are not going anywhere until I get what I want," Kris said furiously, causing the girl to shiver. Tears threatened to fall down.
"Kris, you can't treat a lady like this," A woman's voice caused the Prince to let go of Amelia's wrist immediately.
"Mother," He said nervously, while Amelia just stood there, unmoving. It had been years since the last time she had seen the Queen.
"Mommy!" The little Amelia yelled loudly and ran as fast as she could to her mother who was still lying on the cold floor, unmoving. There was so much blood on the floor, her mom's blood. Just when she had almost reached the room, a woman pulled her into an embrace and covered her eyes with her hand.
"No, Amy, don't look," she said. It was the Queen. It was Kris' mother.
Even though she was the Queen of the Kingdom, she was still really friendly. She was also a good friend of Amelia's mom. She had always been very kind to Amelia and she had always cared for her, especially that day, when Amelia found her mother, dead, murdered in the library. The Queen had taken the little girl into her arms, letting her cry on her shoulder until she got tired from the crying and fell asleep. She had brought her home personally and had waited until her dad came home, because she didn't want the little girl to be home alone on that horrible day.
Amelia still remembered how the Queen hugged her tightly, repeated over and over again that everything was going to be all right. The Queen reminded her of her own mother so much that it hurt.
"Your Majesty," Amelia said. She didn't want to cry, but she couldn't control herself. She felt too weak before her, as if she had turned into the little Amy again.
"Are you all right? Please excuse my silly boy. I'm sure he didn't mean to hurt you," the Queen said as she wiped Amelia's tears gently. She hadn't changed at all, as if she wasn't getting older. She was a beautiful woman, just like her mom.
"I'm fine. May I please go home now?" Amelia asked quietly. Then, she turned to Kris, asking with begging eyes. "Please?"
The Prince only looked away, giving her no answer. The Queen answered calmly but determinedly.
"Of course you can. Just let me get you some guards, it's late already."
"Thank you, but I'm all right. I can take care of myself," the girl replied.
"As you wish, but please be careful, it's dark outside" the Queen said in a motherly tone that Amelia missed so much. She faked a smile and bowed, before leaving the room.
"Mother, it wasn't what it looked like, believe me." As soon as Amelia left, Kris explained.
"Really? Then tell me how I should interpret the situation early, Kris. Because it looked like you were going to assault that poor girl." she said calmly, but Kris could still hear from her voice that she was mad.
"It was a misunderstanding, really," the Prince replied nervously.
"You know you could have everyone, but not in that way. Do you hear me? I'm not allowing my son to do such things. It does not suit a Prince," the Queen said.
"Mother, I promise, it wasn't what it looks like."
"You know I wouldn't lie to you," Kris added. With that she pulled him into her warm embrace, stroking his hair gently.
"I know."
The Prince accompanied his mother to her chamber. Before he left, the Queen asked for the name of the girl earlier.
"I don't know, mother. I had never met her before," Kris answered and with that he told her good night.
The Queen sat down on the bed. It had been a long day... a long week.
"That's weird. I'd almost have said that the poor girl was Amelia. She looked exactly like Helena," she murmured.
Kris arrived at his own bedroom and found his best friend, Liam, waiting for him.
"You're still here?"
"Did you catch her?" Liam asked back.
"Yes," answered Kris tiredly. Tonight was too much for him. He just wanted to go to bed now.
"So where is she?" Liam questioned again.
"I have no idea," said the Prince, confusing his friend.
"What?"
"I caught her and then I lost her again," Kris explained shortly. "Whatever," he said, "You have to help me find that girl."
"And how? I don't know her name. I don't even know how she looks like," Liam said in frustration.
"But I do," replied the Prince.
"Good, you know what she looks like, but you're the Prince. You can't ride on your horse through the whole Kingdom, looking for a girl," the knight said.
"Who said I can't? Don't worry. I have a plan," the Prince said with a smirk on his face.
