Chapter 12: Empty hallways

I stood in a sea of blood, bodies scattered across the floor and one which lied at my feet. I dropped the bloody knife in my hand and looked at each one getting flashes of memories of how they died, how I killed them. I don't know how it happened.
I remember walking inside the room, men and women began to yell and holler about where the general was. Some were secretaries, others were assistance, honest workers, and council members of defense, they ordered us bomb the cities. "Look let me explain." I said. But they wouldn't listen, I was trying to make their lives better and they wouldn't listen. "HEY!" I hollered. They all went silent. "The general is in captivity."
"By who?" One asked.
"By the revolution. People who seek to end the virus." I explained.
"That's bullshit, the virus can't be cured."
"No my dear man it can't." I paced around the room before turning back to them. "But that will only apply if it meant we were talking about the same virus."
"What?" They seemed confused.
"You see before the world went to hell before the cities were build the government was already infected, the virus had already consumed them. The only difference between what lies outside these walls and them is that they know exactly how to fool you." I explained. "The revolution wants nothing more then to stop being played as fools, to end the infiltration of the infected, and most of all to survive as equals..." I turned to one of the council members. "Not as monsters." I pulled out a gun from my back pocket and shot him in the face. Everyone screamed.

"GIVE ME THE GIRL! CORRUPTION IS INEVITABLE KATIE!!!" The man roared. "YOU MUST ACCEPT YOUR FAITH!" His foot steps echoed like a elephants and the sound was too close for comfort.
Alex's father pulled me around the corner and I could see a ladder up ahead. "Come on we'll be safe once we can get above ground, he won't be able to fit."
"Of course he..." I turned around and seen the man was larger and bigger then before. He had black veins coming from his left eye which was completely black. The veins crawled to his left hand too.
"Rachel run faster, don't look back it will only slow you down." Alex's dad said. I turned forward and ran for my life.

I watched as the man's body fell to the floor. Blood stained the floor, everyone went to a panic and as turned my body and I aimed the gun at at the next council member I realized something...no matter what I tell them nothing would change, nothing could undo the hypnosis that the corrupted has put on their minds. The revolution needed people loyal to the cause, someone that can be trusted. Not only was these people untrustworthy but they were liabilities and needed to be knocked down.
I had no choice so one by one I began to gun them down, killing every person in the room. They banged and rushed at the door to escape but it wouldn't budge, it wouldn't open, and there was no way out...there was only bullets only an act of rebellion, only a way to end the madness.
In order to save humanity, we must tear it down and rebuild. I read in a book about a priest who killed church goers in order to free them from their sins. He quoted something that stuck by me without a real reason why.
In death we are whole again. In death there is no corruption only purity.
For us to prosper I would have to purify the corrupted and save us from destruction. From the future where we tear eachother apart because that is the path we currently walk, but I say...it's time for a new course.
One girl left, she clawed at the door and screamed. "LET ME OUT!"
I was out of bullets so I pulled a knife out of my back pocket, walked up to her and stabbed her in the chest. "Don't worry." I whispered in her ear. "In death we are whole again." The life left from her eyes and I picked up her body and dragged it to the center of the room.

Alex quickly climbed the ladder and Michelle helped him up. His dad looked at me, "Hurry your next."
I turned around and seen the man storming closer. "What about you?"
"I'll be fine corrupted don't go after corrupted. Just go!" I was trying to process what he just said but my heart was beating faster then my head and I climbed up the ladder. I looked back down and seen him behind me until suddenly the man tackled him, taking half of the ladder with him and causing the ladder to shake furiously.
I fell off and the hinges to the rest of the ladder broke and nearly fell in top of me. I crawled back and stood up. "Mommy!
"I'm okay Michelle, stay right there okay." I called. I looked over and seen Alex's dad fighting the corrupted but he was different. His eyes were red, corrupted and he was fast...Then I put all the pieces together, he was a corrupted...but how?
"Run! Take the kids and run!" He yelled. I froze, unable to imagine yet alone fathom that the whole time he had been corrupted it made no sense. Corrupted have no humanity, No sense of logic only killing. I needed answers. I looked down at my feet and picked up the piece of ladder, and ran up to the man. I swung it hitting him in the bend of his knee causing him to fall and then again at his head. "Rachel! Rachel stop!" I didn't realize I was hitting him so much and immediately dropped the ladder and stepped back. Alex's dad grabbed my arm. "Come on we gotta find another way around." He took me to the kids and caught them as they jumped down.
Michelle hugged me and looked at the man, "Is he dead?"
I looked at the man, "I really hope so."
"Come on we need to keep moving."
I looked at him and walked up to him. "What are you?" I asked demandingly.
"This isn't the time for that." He sighed, "Right now you just gotta trust me."
"Trust you?" I exclaimed, "A corrupted?"
"My daddy is not a corrupted!" Alex yelled.
"I seen your eyes, the way you moved it wasn't human!" I said.
"Everyone just calm down." Suddenly I heard a moan from behind me. "He's waking up, We have to go like now!" I followed him past the man and down the hall.

That day the hallways were empty, only littered with silence and blood and the lingerance of the corrupted souls.
I could hear my own thoughts for once, screaming, yelling in agony...in fear of nothing more then what I've become. What changed me...how have I changed? When did my hands stain with blood and how do I make it stop? So many questions...so many lies without a answer.
Finally I heard the door was kicked open. The elites rushed in with guns and armor, along with medics. I seen my wife standing at the doorway...she was the last person I wanted to see this. I could see her face...the look of disgust, of hatred. She would never be able to forgive me, who would. Humanity only sees what's in front of them, only the bad...
The elites kicked away my gun and knife and grabbed me off the floor. They put handcuffs on my wrist and escorted me out. "Yes we have the suspect in custody, were bringing him back now." I walked past my wife as we walked through the door. She watched me, and I remembered how strong our love used to be.
Then suddenly I seen her mouth something. Tell them... I spotted tears in her eyes before the elites pushed me forward and down the hall.

We walked through what used to be a city into a deserted plan with nothing but dust and a few green patches here and there it was hard to imagine that there was once a whole society here.
Katie jumped around happily much like Abigail, full of energy and shining despite the world. It made me sad, I tried to ignore it for so long How I felt about her death...about losing someone so important to me. I cut myself off from my emotions but I felt obligated to keep her safe, protect her. Something I couldn't do for Abigail...
Suddenly there was a sound in the distance and all at once cars came out of nowhere and surrounded us. Driving around and kicking up dirt, I grabbed Katie and held her tightly as they began to slide to a stop. Men in masks hopped out of the 4 trucks with guns.
"What's going on?" Katie asked. I heard the fear in her voice.
"Everything is going to be fine just stay close." I said.
The men walked up to us. There was one with red highlights on his mask which seemed to be like the leader. He gestured for his men to stop, "Hey you two, where are you from?" He asked. "You don't seem like fallen."
"Fallen?" I questioned.
"It doesn't matter." The guy turned and hopped on the truck. "Grab them and take them with us. Call in that we have some new prisoners."
The men grabbed us and pushed us into the truck. I didn't get it, why were there people here? The city was on lockdown. I heard Katie screaming.
