The king's a premier, he moves only a square,
The queen most powerful and moves all about;
The bishop, rook, knight and castle are in pairs,
And they move up or down or across the board,
But the knight over a piece, can jump with flair.
Then comes the pawn, basic piece of the game,
Moves one step forward, but in a play rare,
Reaches the other end, not being out,
Turns the most powerful; Oh, what a dare!
