Chapter 18

Kaya woke in her nightmare, treating it like any other by not really caring too much, but instantly was curious by what was happening.

She remained in the same position as she had when she was on her bed, instead of standing. There was solid ground beneath her, and a bright red shone off of them. She stood up and looked around in slight fear. The red light she had seen was actually many lasers encompassing her in a box. She couldn't see anything past them. She tried to use a Gaster Blaster to get rid of some of them, but nothing happened.

What's going on? she wondered, looking down at her still-human hands. Why can't I use my magic?

A ring from her phone scared the hell out of her, and she scrambled in order to answer it. The scare seemed to be enough to change her into her skeletal form, though.

"H-hello?" she asked hesitantly. There was nothing besides static coming through. "O-k, well, this isn't creepy at all. Hanging up now," she said, ending the call with whoever had called her.

Ok, so. A mysterious place, a mysterious call, now for my mysterious killer. She stopped that train of thought with humor. I've been watching too many of Alphys' creepy animes.

"Alright," she said to the darkness. "Come on out. It's obvious already that I can't do anything to get out, which is also my attacks. Ow," she added in a whisper, having accidently leaned on the lasers by habit. She rubbed her arm, and checked her HP. The shock from the lasers had almost depleted it. Shit! What are those lasers made of?!

She waited a moment for whoever trapped her there to appear, but no one did. Hmm, she thought, her eyes staring out into the darkness through the gaps in between the lasers. Where is my 'mysterious killer' at? I can sense them, but-

"My, my," a voice said from the darkness, making Kaya jump backwards, her tail stuck straight up in the air. She glanced behind her, realized how close she was to dying, and stood closer to the middle. "Aren't you as non-expectant as always."

"What- wait!" She realized who she had sensed and ducked when she saw a bright light racing towards her. The beam, as the light turned out to be, cleared the lasers and she stood up straight again. "Grandpa Gaster!?" she shouted out into the darkness. Off in the distance, she could see something, but she wasn't sure yet as of that moment. Oh, it's a Gaster Blaster, she thought and raced toward it, doging the blasts from other Gaster Blasters and teleported out of the way of bones that erupted from the ground.

She neared the stationary blaster without getting hit by anything, which was good since her HP had been almost depleted earlier. It didn't try to fire at her, and it looked different from the rest that were. Is that... Dad's!? But, how? He's never showed up in a nightmare before, except when I'm viewing a run. And if this was one where my family members turned on me, then why isn't it attacking?

Focus, Kaya! She heard in her head and her white guardian wolf, Lyra, appeared, running beside her.

Right, sorry, she responded in her mind. But this is all confusing.

We'll get to the bottom of this strange reality, Lyra snarled.

Wait, reality? Kaya asked as she climbed onto the back of her furry friend. The fur was so soft and warm and long.

I'll explain later. First, let's take care of your grandfather.

Fine, but I expect a detailed explanation.

They reached her father's blaster and ran into an invisible wall. Kaya crashed onto the floor, her HP lowering slightly, and took half a moment to regain back onto her feet. "What," she wondered as she put her skeletal hands up against the wall. "is this?" She pounded her fists against it, but nothing happened. "Still call this a reality?" she asked her guardian out loud.

Yes, I'm sure because this is Gaster's reality, Lyra answered, coming up beside her. He can manipulate it however he wants. We can't change it.

"Alright, Gaster," Kaya shouted, her eyes dark, and turned around, Lyra guarding her back. "What do you want?"

She watched as her grandfather appeared before her. She didn't look up at him.

"Oh, what do I want, dear child?" he repeated and started teasing with her. "Who can tell. There is so much I want, how can I say it in as little words possible?"

"One!" She hissed, darting her head up to look him in the eyes, or eye sockets if you will. "I am not stupid! I'll understand whatever you say. Two! There is no need to procrastinate. If so, then what are you forestalling? And three!" Tears came to her eye sockets, her magical eye flaring its purple light. "How dare you lie to me?! Do you know the hassle I've been through since I've learned about you? Most likely it will be a yes," she said, answering for him. "You've also lied that you would never harm me. So why attack me now? I'm not my fullest; I'm exhausted from Uncle Papyrus' spar, which was my idea in the first place," she added in a mumble. "And now, because of you, I may never be able to regain any sleep!"

"One," Gaster said in response. "Of course you're not stupid. Sans is my smartest son and I would expect his children to be so as well. Two, it's none of your concern. Of no one's concern. Like I said, I can't interact with the real world, and anything made here can't go out into that world. And three, I never lied, nor have I promised anything. So there is no lying happening between us, just our own secrets." Lyra growled, placing herself between Gaster and Kaya. "Looks like your pet is done listening to us speak. So I suppose-"

"Lyra's not a pet!" Kaya shouted while her guardian growled in her mind, I'm not some lowly pet!, obviously taken aback by his choice of words. How dare he compare me to a dog?!

"What is this creature, then?" Gaster asked, a slight smile on his face as if he enjoyed making others angry.

"Lyra is my wolf guardian. Have you never seen her, seeing how you didn't lie about not knowing me?"

"W-well," he stammered, caught off guard. "No, she has never appeared to me before." Kaya knew he was lying, and she caught him red-handed. "Only now. Different codes work for different realities, after all."

"Obviously, or how else would those, ah, whatchamacallits, exist?" she teased.

"They are called alternate universes, you numb-skull." She could tell she was starting to get him mad. If she had to be honest, fighting was better than talking up to someone about twice her size. Because then, at least, things seemed to be more even.

"Oh, yeah. I guess I forgot what AUs were called for a moment."

"Kaya?" they all heard from up above and all around.

"What, who?" Kaya wondered aloud. Her grandfathet looked just as confused as she did.

"Sis?" It was closer, louder, and could be pinpointed, but it was a lower pitch this time. Two voices?

Your brothers? Lyra wondered. But, how'd they get here?

"Sarisk? Cypress?" She ran toward the source of the voices, hopping onto her guardian's back in order to go faster.

How big is this void? She wondered. Staring ahead, she could see a bright light gray light glowing in the distance. Lyra started going faster, both of their tails flying out behind them, but she stopped suddenly, and Kaya almost went flying off. Why'd you stop? she asked furiously. We're so close to them!

There's another wall. Gaster doesn't want us to either get lost or to go towards them.

By now, her brothers had spotted her, and indeed, they were quite real for they certainly acted like it.

"What happened?!" Cypress asked, in his furious mood. "Who hurt you?!"

"Where are we?" came Sarisk's quieter question.

"I'll explain where we are in a bit," Kaya replied, getting off her guardian and kneeling down to her little brother's height. She placed her hand against the invisible boundary, and her brother did the same. She stood up straight after a moment, Sarisk's large, dark, shining, worried, blue eyes watching her.

Cypress pounded against the wall, trying to somehow break the law of physics and break the wall. Then again, the law of physics doesn't quite match up in Gaster's reality, the Void.

"You can't break it," Kaya said after a moment of pounding had gone on. "I've already tried and it didn't work."

"Then why didn't you tell me before I started hitting it harder?!" her twin argued. "Owww." He cradled his hand, gingerly shaking it out.

"Well, this is a pleasant surprise," Gaster's voice said behind them.
