Chapter 20.
"So this is the famous pool room?" I asked as Luke opened the door, both of us entering the room. It wasn't even that special, the pool room was really just a big room with a pool in it, nothing more.
"Yeah, I told you it's not that cool. But there's a diving board, if that counts for anything." Luke shrugged and pointed to the other side of the room. He turned to face me and smiled, his hand still clutching onto mine.
"I'm impressed." I laughed, causing Luke to roll his eyes at me. He ran a hand through his hair, shaking it out a little.
"You don't have to lie, Stel." Luke chuckled. He sat down at the edge of the pool and rolled up the bottom of his jeans, letting his feet dip in the water. I sat down next to him, doing the same.
I let my head rest on his shoulder as Luke wrapped an arm around me, neither one of us speaking. I wasn't exactly sure how to act at the moment, given the all events that had just happened all in one night. I was a bit shaky, from all the kissing and the crying and the alcohol. It made me laugh that I had expected this to be a simply party consisting of Luke and I hiding out in a bedroom and talking, when really so much more happened. Luke actually seemed to be just fine. But that's how he always was, he was good at pretending that he was okay when he really wasn't.
After a long time of us not saying anything, Luke spoke. "Can I ask you something?"
"Yeah." I nodded, taking my head off of Luke's shoulder so I could look at him. Things were a little awkward between us, or maybe they were more awkward for me than for Luke. By now I had realized that I had definite feelings for Luke, but even though I knew this, a small part of me still wanted to be with Ashton - even though he hurt me. I just had so many feelings happening at the same time and I wasn't sure how to handle them.
"What's going to happen with you and Ashton now?" Luke swallowed. "I mean, I don't know, Stel...I'm just wondering how you're feeling about all of this."
I answered slowly. "I'm not sure what will happen, actually."
"You're going to break up with him, right?" Luke asked. He removed his arm from around me and backed up a little.
"I-I don't know." I choked out. All of this talk about Ashton was making me feel like crying again, it had only been a couple hours since this had all happened.
"What do you mean you don't know? You know what he did, right?" Luke groaned, which only made me feel worse about all of this.
"Yes, but he was all worked up and drunk and-" I tried to gather my thoughts, still defending Ashton even though I knew I shouldn't try anymore.
"He wasn't that drunk." Luke interrupted. "He knew exactly what he was doing."
"I can at least give him a chance to explain himself! I'm not going to just dump him without warning!" I yelled.
"You can't be serious, Stel. Yes you can dump him without wanring, he slapped you!" Luke shouted, throwing his arms up in the air.
"I just need to-"
"You don't need to do anything!" Luke yelled, "He hurt you and that's not okay, that's not what boyfriends do!"
"Luke, stop yelling at me." I said quietly.
"You're seriously considering staying with him after he did that to do? How can you be so stupid?" Luke stood up, and I did as well.
"I just need some time to think about it, Luke!" I screamed, "I've been in love with this kid for the past three years, I think I need a little time!"
"Bullshit, Stel! You didn't really love him! You don't even know what love is, love isn't even a real thing!" Luke scoffed.
"Really? And how would you know that?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. I was getting so tired of this, I couldn't believe Luke was trying to start a fight over this right now, when I was clearly still upset.
"Look around, Stel! I've seen it happen, love never works out!" Luke licked his lips, preparing to elaborate more. "I thought my parents loved each other, right? But no, they didn't, because my dad left. He didn't love my mom anymore. And I thought that my brother loved me, because he's my brother, why wouldn't he? But he left too, he doesn't care about me or how my mom treats me, I haven't even seen him in two years!"
"Luke, you're being-" I tried to stop him from rambling on like this, but apparently he had something to say that I needed to hear.
"Let me finish!" Luke snapped. As he was speaking he had stepped closer and closer to me, so he was now only inches away from me. "I thought that maybe for a second I had loved my ex-girlfriend, but she obviously didn't love me back and she cheated on me because I just wasn't good enough."
Luke looked down at the ground and let a small laugh escape his lips before he looked back up at me. "I also thought that my own mother would maybe love me a little, but I guess she doesn't since she hits me whenever I do something wrong."
I wasn't sure if Luke was quite finished yet so I stayed silent, afraid that he would yell at me if I interrupted again. I felt extremely bad for Luke, but I knew that he didn't want me to, he never wanted me to feel sorry for him. That's not why he was telling me this, he was telling me to prove a point. He just had to be rude about it to get his point across.
"I'm sorry that you feel that way." I said finally, after waiting too long for Luke to say anything.
"Don't." Luke groaned. "Stel, I've told you probably a million times, when I tell you these things I don't expect you to feel sorry for me."
I rolled my eyes. "You were right, Luke."
"About what?" He asked, glancing up at me. He seemed much calmer than he was a few minutes ago, but as I had learned with Luke I could never tell exactly how he was feeling from the outside.
"I don't know why I put up with you, you're just an asshole." I turned away from Luke, ready to leave, but he grabbed onto my wrist and pulled me back.
"Jesus, Stel. I'm the asshole? That's exactly why I broke your boyfriends nose for slapping you, right? And that's why I gave you my jacket even though it's, like, 5 degrees outside - and I still feel cold - because I'm such an asshole." Luke yelled, "I'm so sorry for being so rude and doing those things to you."
"You're being ridiculous right now." I pried Luke's hand off of me and crossed my arms over my chest once again.
"You didn't even say thank you for me helping you." Luke laughed.
"Sorry, I was too busy kissing you to say anything." I scoffed, not event knowing how I should be feeling right now. Even when Luke was acting like this I still wanted to be with him.
"Really, so it's my fault?" Luke asked. He took a step closer to me.
"It's always your fault." I smirked.
"Are you sure? Because I think you've provoked it a couple times." Luke argued. He was smiling now, despite the fact that we were fighting.
"I don't think-" But I was cut off by Luke grabbing my face in his hands and smashing his lips against mine. I wrapped my arms around his neck, instantly forgetting everything that had just happened and losing myself to the feeling of Luke's lips on mine. Luke began backing up, still kissing me, until I felt us reach the edge of the pool.
"What are you doing?" I asked as Luke slowly took of his own shirt, and then mine, leaving me in only my bra and jeans. I already knew what was going on by now, so I didn't know why I even asked.
"Have you ever kissed someone underwater?" He asked, between kissing me.
Before I had a chance to answer he pulled me back, both of us falling into the pool. I came up for air right away and we separated for a minute, but Luke soon found me again and pulled me underwater. The water wasn't that deep, but it was deep enough to the point where I wasn't able to stand. Luke was, of course, he was probably the tallest person I had ever met. He pressed his lips to mine once more, creating a strange sensation since we were completely submerged underwater.
Kissing Luke underwater was harder than I'd thought it would be, even though I didn't have time to put much thought into it at all. I was used to being short of breath from kissing Luke like this, with such intensity, but being underwater put that on a whole other level. It was hard to notice anything other than how I felt like my lungs were going to burst at any second. I guess Luke felt the same way, because a few seconds later he released me and swam up to the surface, letting me do the same.
"That was, um, interesting." Luke laughed, swimming closer to me. He rested his hands on my hips and pulled me into him.
"That's one way to put it." I shrugged. Luke leaned in again, letting his lips find mine. He backed us up against the pool wall, so we were able to stay comfortably still.
Luke brushed my hair out of my face, then moved his hands down my body, feeling every inch of it. His lips and tongue worked against mine, the faint taste of all the alcohol he had drank still there. I ran my hands down the front of Luke, letting my fingers gently brush over his toned body, which honestly surprised me because I didn't think Luke was one of work out. That only made Luke kiss me harder, pressing his body even closer to mine. Kissing never felt this good, not even with Ashton.
"I'm still upset with you, you know." I mumbled, with Luke still kissing me. He moved his lips down, attaching them to my neck and sucking gently on it.
"What can I," Luke paused, kissing me again, "do to make it up to you?"
"How am I supposed to know?" I laughed, kissing Luke on the lips once more before separating.
"Maybe you should just let me off the hook for this one." Luke smirked, "Besides, I'm being kind of romantic right now, isn't that enough?"
"How are you being romantic?" I pushed Luke away from me a little, despite how hard he was trying to stay where he was.
"We're kissing in a pool, it's like kissing in the rain but not as cliché." Luke chuckled, flipping his hair off of his forehead.
"You're such a dork!" I laughed, splashing water at Luke.
"Stop it, you're a dork!" Luke covered his eyes, backing away from me even more. He splashed me too, before ducking underwater to protect himself. I pushed myself up onto the ledge and sat on it, waiting for Luke to one up for air. He came up seconds later, launching himself at me and splashing me again.
"Come on, get back in the water." Luke laughed. He grabbed hold of my hands and tried dragging me back into the pool.
"I still don't understand how you do this." I shook my head, still amazed at Luke's ability to change moods completely so quickly.
"Let's talk about it later, I don't want to start another fight." Luke said, as he successfully pulled me back into the pool. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, holding me close up against his him as he spun around in the water.
"I'm sorry for calling you an asshole." I laughed softly. I still found it amusing that whenever Luke and I got in a fight we were always so quick to forgive each other. It defeated the awkward stage of us not being sure if we were friends - or whatever we were - or not.
"You don't need to apologize, it's kind of true." Luke muttered, his lips leaving a small trail of kisses along my shoulder. "But, I'm sorry for yelling at you."
"It's okay, I deserved it, I was being stupid." I sighed, realzing that Luke was just telling the truth.
"Don't say that, you don't deserve to have anyone yell at you." Luke laughed. He turned me around, again moving a piece of hair away from my face. That was one of my favorite little habits of his, the way that he always felt the need to move my hair away from my face. Hair being in my eyes never really bothered me, and I found it cute that it obviously annoyed Luke.
"Stop saying things like that, that I don't deserve bad things to happen to me. I'm a person, luke, obviously bad things are going to happen." I rolled my eyes. Luke responded by leaning forward once again and kissing me on the lips.
"Not if I can stop them, Stel." Luke whispered.
"You're really cheesy, you know that?" I joked, hiding the fact that Luke's comment gave me butterflies. The fact that Luke had this idea that he needed to protect me always made me feel so special, especially because sometimes he needed more protecting than I did.
"You're beautiful, you know that?" Luke smiled.
"That's exactly what I mean!" I laughed, pushing Luke away from me and climbing out of the pool. i picked up my shirt that was still laying on the ground and used it to dry myself off a little, even though it wasn't much help at all, Luke followed me, picking up his own shirt and doing the same.
"So, uh, if Ashton asks-" Luke began to speak, but this time I cut him off.
"I'm breaking up with Ashton." I said quickly, almost not believing that the words were coming out of my mouth. It seemed weird that I was just decided to break up with him now, since I had been feeling off about our relationship the whole time, but I guess I just needed a literal slap in the face to make me realize what I was missing out on.
"Oh, good." Luke laughed nervously, "Now I can stop feeling so guilty about taking your shirt off. I've been freaking out about that for 20 minutes."
"Yeah, well you kind of talked some sense into me and I realized that he isn't the right guy for me." I chuckled, choosing to ignore Luke's last comment.
We silently made our way up to Luke's room, after deciding that we weren't going to sleep in the treehouse since it was so cold outside and I refused to go out there. We made sure not to make any noise so Luke's mom wouldn't wake up, both of us scared that if she caught us we would get in trouble. We made it uptairs, thankfully not getting caught at all even though I was scared that we would because Luke wouldn't stop trying to tickle me.
Once we were safely inside Luke's room, we changed clothes, with Luke letting me borrow a pair of sweatpants and an old t-shirt. It was funny, we seemed to have a little routine down, even though we had only done this a couple times before. I liked the way Luke and I were able to do things like that, as if we had been close with each other for years when in reality we'd only met a couple months before.
"Stel," Luke whispered. We were laying in his bed now, both of us staring up at the ceiling.
"What?" I asked, slightly annoyed as I had just been drifting off to sleep.
"I was afraid to say this before, but you have really nice boobs." Luke laughed, which made me roll over and slap him hard on the chest.
"It was a compliment, Stel, don't get upset." Luke said. He continued to laugh quietly at himself until we both fell asleep.
lol I had this idea for the end of the chapter but then I had no idea how to actually end it so here's Luke talking about boobs omg I hope you all like this because I thought it was pretty cute okay bye I love you all
SORRY FOR SPELLING MISTAKES I'M TOO LAZY TO GO BACK AND CHECK IT OVER
