chapter two
There was something about the serenity of night walks that pleased Jungkook. It was refreshing and pleasing. He loved the cold air against his face and how the wind tossed his dyed blonde hair about in the air.
He also enjoyed the sound of Lana Del Rey's voice through his earbuds, something about her voice soothed him and brought him the kind of peace no voice had ever brought him, regardless of how depressing her songs were.
It was passed eleven, his mother and little brother were already in bed. His father was working late again at the station. He'd tried to fall asleep but it wouldn't come, so he'd thrown on some thick clothes before slipping out of the house.
Despite how hard he tried to push it away, Hoseok's annoying voice overpowered the beautiful voice of Lana and Jungkook could hear the words he'd spoken to him that afternoon, "He's never going to like you, you know? In what universe does the popular guy ever fall in love with the nerd? I mean, I understand your own case. There's something very attractive about the impulsive, adventurous lifestyle of bad guys. But you, what does a nerd have to offer?"
It had taken all of him to not take advantage of his past knowledge in Taekwando. Hoseok was a conceited bully, yes. But when had he become the target? He'd steered clear of his unpleasant squad, made sure to not interfere in their ugly activities.
Offering Jin that pen had been a mistake, one he wished he could undo.
No one ever spoke to Jin unless he spoke first and that was on very rare occasions. Jin was always quiet. He stuck with his friends, Hoseok and Taehyung. They were the ones who did the talking.
But only a few days back, he'd been walking past Jin's seat when he heard him ask his friends for a pen. Taehyung had said he didn't even have for himself. Jungkook had an extra one. He grabbed it and stretched it out to Jin who stared at him, probably wondering what guts he had to come up to him.
His classmates had laughed that he'd been shunned by Jin. None of them would have done what he did because they knew better. They knew Jin was an asshole who looked down on everybody because his murderous, thieving thug of a father was wealthier and more influential than half the politicians in the state put together.
And he didn't care. Jungkook didn't give two shits about Jin but the issue was his friends. They assumed because he'd offered a pen, he was in love with Jin so they went about shouldering him in the hallway and throwing snide comments his way about how his 'goody two shoes ass' was not deserving of their narcissistic friend.
Jungkook hadn't cared. He knew their type and understood that if he reacted, he was only going to fuel their games. So, he'd taken each shove and each comment with a grain of salt, hoping they'd eventually get bored and leave him the hell alone.
But that was until a few moments ago when he'd gotten the text.
The dock was empty as Jungkook had expected.
It was never Jin's style to keep to time. Always fashionably late. Yes, fashionably. As conceited as he was, Jungkook wouldn't lie, the guy dressed better than most celebrities he saw on TV these day.
Jungkook tugged his sweater tighter around his body. It was so cold. He should have never agreed to meet by the docks. There were other safer places but Jin had asked to meet here where it was dark and empty. Where anything could happen to Jungkook and no one would ever find him. It was that eerie.
Jungkook's father was a top detective, he should have his father's instincts.
Waves crashed against the side of the dock, water splashing on the wood under his feet. It was a sign he was too close for comfort. Jungkook took a few steps back, and watched the darkened sea from where he stood. He rocked back and forth to keep himself warm because that was the only option he had.
He stood for another ten minutes, almost eager to turn and leave when a sudden burst of light cast behind him. He turned to see the familiar Bentley pull up and park at the side.
Was it too late to back out now? He wondered within himself, a shiver traveling the length of his back and it wasn't from the weather. He brought his hands from his pockets and flexed them. He could just start running until he was back to comfort but he could imagine the satisfaction it would bring Jin, to see someone cower and hide in fear.
Instead, he stood his ground.
Jin's expensive scent wafted through the wind towards Jungkook even before he got close. It was a powerful scent. "What do you want?" He asked irritably, approaching Jungkook, shoulders squared, head held high, long legs stepping boldly and majestically that Jungkook instantly felt intimidated by his presence.
Luckily, he hadn't come along with his puppets. Jungkook couldn't stand them.
"What do you mean what do I want?" Jungkook asked, confused.
"Nothing." He shrugged. "I just happened to have driven all the way here because I prefer staring meditatively into the ocean instead of doing something productive with my time," he said sarcastically, glaring at Jungkook.
Honestly, Jungkook was more affected by the length of his words than the content. That was the most he'd heard Jin speak. The longest he'd spoken to him.
"Are you kidding?"
He didn't respond, just stared at Jungkook. Probably deciding Jungkook's words weren't worthy of his response. At least, not yet. But Jungkook was going to get it out of him.
"I understand you get your power from putting other people down and treating them like they're not worthy to breathe the same air as you and your airhead friends. I get it. It's what you thrive on, instilling fear in people but a lot of us are more bothered by the important things in life like being at home doing homework. Why did you text me to meet you here?"
Jin's glare on Jungkook hardened. His already dark piercing eyes darkened. He looked scary. Like his-father-was-a-mafia-murderer-and-Jungkook-was-supposed-to-be-afraid-of-him scary.
He took a step towards Jungkook, eyes unblinking like a robot. His jaws were clenched and Jungkook spotted a flex in his slim cheek. "Is this a death wish?"
Jungkook was getting very irritated by the whole thing. He brought his phone from his pocket and scrolled to the message he'd gotten that evening. He turned the screen to Jin. "I should be asking you the same thing," He said, refusing to be intimidated by him.
For a long time, Jin's gaze remained on Jungkook, then with the littlest effort, they shifted slowly to the phone. Again, they shifted to Jungkook.
"Care to explain?" Jungkook asked.
"'Please meet me by the docks at 11pm. I need to talk to you. Jin.'" He said, scoffing a laugh. "You really believed that was from me." He shook his head, looking unimpressed as he eyed Jungkook from his head to his toes, then settled on his face. He tsked. "You're not as smart as I thought, Jungkook."
"You know my name," Jungkook said in realization, more to himself than to Jin.
He frowned, unimpressed. "You've been in my class for over 10 years. But because I know your name doesn't mean I'll text you to please meet me. What would I possibly have to discuss with the son of a policeman?"
"So, why are you here?" Jungkook gritted out. He was freezing his balls off, and this dude was here playing silly games with him.
"Aren't you afraid?" Jin asked, ignoring Jungkook's own question. Something must be amusing to him because he was smirking. "Being here at this time with me. Alone."
"Why would I be?" Jungkook asked, tilting his head a bit higher. "Are you planning to kill me?"
He shrugged, still smirking. Jungkook wanted to wipe his smugness off with a slap. "With my bare hands? You're not worth it."
"So, why am I here?" Jungkook asked.
"Cos you're gullible and stupid," he said, turned and started to walk away without as much as a dismissive remark. Not even a, "Now fuck off," as Jungkook expected from someone like him.
And Jungkook still didn't know what he was doing here. Was it a prank? Jin also seemed to have gotten a message like him. It meant someone else had done this. Brought them together at this time alone, knowing the enmity existing between their fathers, knowing the one existing between them.
So, who'd done it and why?
