The air around us if frigid as we stroll down the same side street I had came down.
"Where do you live?" I question, waiting for some kind of magical portal that will transport me into his realm. Wherever that may be. And whatever that may be. I know almost nothing about the Sins and Virtues, and where they take residence. All I'm aware of is they have something to do with the Moon.
"I don't live anywhere in particular," he tells me, his arm tightening around where it is looped around mine. "Why settle for once place, when you can have them all."
My eyes can't help but roll at that statement. He's suddenly becoming more transparent being Greed. I should have known when I saw the lavish colour of gold mixed in within the thick darkness of the rest of his hair.
"You really suit your namesake, don't you."
He glances down at me, a glimmer in his eyes that insinuates only the darkest of intentions. "You make it seem like it's a bad thing."
It occurs to me in that moment, that as Greed, Cian has probably never experienced something that hasn't gone his way. When he meets Fate, he will soon realise that any plan he conjures from the back of his mind will mean nothing. However, right now, I don't think much has bothered this man in his life.
Perhaps Cian doesn't even see what being humble, or what sharing is like. When everything for you goes so easily, and you obtain everything and give nothing, you see no wrong in it.
"Well, you said you're taking me to your home, so where is it?" I question.
The deeper we walk down this street, the colder I get. Not because the cobblestone is beginning to deteriorate, and the buildings seem to be getting closer, but because his motive is unknown to me. Where is he taking me?
"Name a place you've always wanted to go to," he says. I'm forced to walk slow with him, as he keeps his steps leisurely. Clearly he couldn't care less.
So seeing an opportunity, and knowing it wouldn't arise again, I decide to snatch it.
"I just want to go home."
"To Fate?" he questions, his expression going sour. So does mine. As much as Fate loves hearing me call his estate home, I cannot say I have any emotional attachment to it. "You'll be returned to him soon enough. I first want to understand why he has such a hold on you that you don't seem to like so much."
"No, not to Fate's. And in reality, you're holding me hostage until Fate comes to retrieve me. Then you can deal with whatever is going on between you too," I tell him, my feet nearly slipping from the algae and age seeping in between the cracks of the copplestone.
"Smart aren't you," he says with a smile. It seems to be concealing something. "Alright, I'll take you to this home you speak of. Give me the name of your place, and you're there."
"Devotion Pack," I say quickly, before he can change his mind.
I feed him the address, hiding my excitement behind a wall of indifference. Cian seems like the type of immortal to steal away your pleasure for his own. Even if Fate comes and takes me away from my home, which I assume will be the case, since my father is still in his custody, I want to see my brother. Even for a little while.
"Very well then," Cian murmurs, before he comes to a complete halt in the middle of the street, right underneath a lamp. "Come closer. And don't give me that look. I'm doing you a favour, am I not?"
I frown. My hesitation, however, does not last long. I'm assuming he is using a transportation method similar to Fate. I'll grab onto a limb of his, and the ground from underneath me will disappear. And then - if he keeps his promise - I will be back home, with Zaid.
Clasping his hand, I let him pull me close.
"Anyone ever told you you smell delightful?" he asks, grinning down at me. It's an almost feline smile, full of curiosity and amusement.
It was only at the mention of that, that I notice his own scent. "As do you."
From the very nice suit jacket he wears, an addicting scent rises. I can hardly put my finger on it, as it creeps into my nose, reaching right into my head. It leaves me in a haze almost. Like the sweetest smell of vanilla and wildflowers has entwined together.
"You like that?" he purrs, that smile going nowhere. "It's a very special smell. It's allure only works on mortals. Or the youngest of immortals."
My heart almost stops at the mention of that. "Wait, what?"
"Just close your eyes, beautiful Zayla. You'll be home soon," he whispers in my ear.
I want to fight back, but every limb seems to collapse into him at the same time, losing all sense of feeling and control. Cian holds onto me tightly, cradling my neck so my head wouldn't lull back. His dark eyes are the last thing I see, before consciousness escapes me.
***
My eyes don't have time to open as my body lurches into sitting position.
I'm in a bed. Not my bed, but my brothers. I know simply by the smell. When I open my eyes, it's confirmed. I'm home again, in the safest place I know. And no one else is anywhere to be seen. Not Cian, not Fate. And not Zaid.
"I'm home," I breathe, a slow smile stretching across my face. I'm out of bed in a second. "Wait, I'm home."
Quickly, I toss the covers off my legs, and race to the window. This is unmistakably the Devotion Pack. The tense trees, the dull sky above them. This is home, and I couldn't be happier about it. For a moment, I even feel tears build up behind my eyes, but I shake my head. No time for that.
Wandering into the main room, I see Cian at the dining table, feet on it as he slouches back in the chair.
"This place sucks. You wanted to be brought back here?" he questions.
"This is where my brother and I lived before everything with Fate happened. Is he here?" I ask. I move around the house, yelling out for him. "Hey Zaid, I'm home...."
"This is depressing," Cian says with an eye roll. "No, there was no brother that you speak of when we arrived."
"He must be out, that's okay."
Cian sits up, looking curious. If I'm honest, I wish he wouldn't be here. It reminds me, however, that this won't last very long. Cian is here, trying to lure Fate in. He will be here any moment, ready to take me back to the life I was living before.
"I'm going to call Zaid," I exclaim, knowing I need to speed this along. "I still know his number."
"Right. And I'm going to entertain myself with...The nothingness that is a mortal home," Cian mutters. I ignore him, picking the phone up to dial in his number.
The moment I hear him pick up, I speak. "Zaid, it's me."
"Zayla?" he says frantically. My heart melts at the sound of that familiar voice. "Where are you?"
"Our old home. Get here quick okay. Fate isn't here but another immortal is. I just want to see you before I get taken away again," I tell him quickly. My eyes are closed as I clutch the phone. I only have to hope Cian doesn't do anything to hurt Zaid. I don't know what business he would have with an Alpha.
"It's so good to hear your voice again," he breathes, distracted, before he shakes out of it. "Okay, uh, I'll be there in a few minutes okay? Don't go anywhere."
Reluctantly, I put the phone down as he hangs up. I just have to pray he gets here before Fate shows up.
I turn around to see Cian walking toward the door. "Where are you going?"
"Outside to see if anything is different," he says, reaching the door. "Although, I highly doubt it."
He opens the door, however, on the other side of it is not what either of us expected. Fate. He stands there, eyebrow raised as he leans against the doorframe. Of course he would be there, ready to make a scene without having to try.
He walks into the room, brushing past Cian as if he doesn't exist. "Now which one of you didn't invite me to the party?'
"That was quick," I mutter under my breath.
"Ah, Fate. Finally gracing us with your presence. Why don't you step in and let me explain to you why Zayla decided to be sent here rather than back with you," Cian offers. Much to my surprise, he doesn't even acknowledge Cian with his gaze, instead concentrating on me, which can't be a good thing.
"Step back Cian, I'm not here for you," Fate says, dismissing him.
Cian backs up closer to me, suddenly realising Fate's intentions. "You send this innocent angel to visit me on your behalf, because you're what? Scared?"
"If you're looking for attention, you're looking at the wrong place," Fate says blatantly, finally looking at Cian. It was only for a second, though. Then that dark gaze I've been worried about seeing trains on me. "Zayla, we need to go."
I was going to say something, but Cian cuts me off. "Come on Fate, we have some things to talk about."
"Soon, Cian," Fate says patiently, although I see it wearing thin. "Right now, I think I need to get Zayla home."
When I thought the situation couldn't get any worse, I see Zaid at the doorway, walking through with more confidence than he should have right now. Especially with this many immortals in one room.
"Zayla?" he says, walking toward me, before he notices the blue haired immortal right before him. "Fate? Holy..."
"Zaid!"
Cian arm comes out to catch me before I can rush toward my brother. "I wouldn't do that if I were you, Angel."
"Don't call me that, pig," I snap, struggling against him.
"Wait up there, Alpha," Fate mutters, doing the same to Zaid as Cian had done to me. However, Zaid pushes away from him. Fate may not move an inch, but I can tell by his expression that he is bothered by this retaliation.
"Don't touch me. You don't get to steal my sister away and act like that," Zaid snaps.
Fate rolls his eyes. "This isn't the time to be a hero, Zaid."
"I'll kill you."
All of a sudden, the loud sounds seemed to build up in my ears, turning into nothing but a ringing sound that I grimace against. But it only worsens, until I'm crouching on the floor, and perhaps I'm also screaming.
And then everything around us explodes.
